In this article, the global research status and future trends of cadastre were evaluated by using bibliometric analysis. This study is based on the analysis of research topics, scientific production, collaboration among countries and authors, and most cited papers on cadastre research which obtained from database of Scopus during the time period from 1958 to 2018. A total of 4220 papers were published in 128 different journals and most of them were original articles (2906, 68.8%) followed by conference paper (966, 22.9%). It found that Germany was the most productive country with 218 papers and 5.2% of total literature followed by United States and Australia. University of Melbourne was found to publish the highest number of documents with 85 papers and to cover 4.2% of the total literature followed by Delft University of Technology. Most used five keywords were "cadastre", "GIS", "surveying", "mapping" and "land use" (n = 945, 791, 300, 296 and 294 times, respectively). The top two authors who contributed most were Williamson, I.P. (69 articles), Van Oosterom P. (40 articles). The top-cited publication was "Analysis of land-cover transitions based on seventeenth and eighteenth century cadastral maps and aerial photographs" written by Cousins, in Landscape Ecology in 2001. The Department of the Interior (DOI), through the Minerals Management Service (MMS), has the primary responsibility to manage the ocean energy and mineral resources on the U.S. Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) as well as the mineral revenues generated from the OCS and from onshore federal and American Indian lands to enhance public and trust benefits, promote responsible use, and realize fair value. The MMS has collected and disbursed more than $200 billion (€137 billion) since the bureau was created in 1982. Collections and disbursements averaged approximately $13 billion (€9 billion) annually over the last five years. In Fiscal Year 2008, the MMS disbursed more than $23.4 billion (€16 billion). Since its origin, MMS has been providing essential offshore geospatial data and information necessary to determine, describe, and map the submerged lands of the U.S. The Mapping and Boundary Branch (MBB) determines the offshore boundaries associated with the leasing program and provides maps and GIS data of the MMS Offshore Leasing Programs. The U.S., unlike most developed countries, does not have a public federal or state property rights infrastructure. In a paper written in 2002 rifled "What Do Americans Pay for Not Having a Public Land Registration System?" Bengt Kjellson estimated the costs of this weakness in the U.S. economy at $20 billion annually (Kjellson 2002). In the new context of the mortgage crisis in the U.S. and the economic crisis it has triggered worldwide, we can reformulate the question this way: "What have Americans (and maybe the rest of the world) paid for not having a public property rights infrastructure?" In effect, we believe that a good property rights infrastructure could have mitigated the effect of the land market crisis and thereby avoided the loss of many hundreds or even thousands of billion dollars. This paper indicates that the lack of a sound property rights infrastructure in the U.S. has contributed to the collapse of its land market. Of course, this is not the only cause of the mortgage crisis. The negligence of the government to control the banking system and the fact that banks have been too loose in their loan controls is obvious. But in crisis times, good, reliable, and accessible information available on time is of critical importance. When this information is missing or hard to obtain with- out any guarantee of reliability, the crisis will act as a storm traveling over warm waters to become a hurricane. This is precisely what happened last year in the U.S. In his Inaugural Address, U.S. President Barack Obama said, "Starting today, we must pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and begin again the work of remaking America" (Obama 2009).
