Plants are able to adapt to changing environments and thus survive droughts. However, most land surface models produce unrealistically low ecosystem resiliency to droughts, degrading the credibility of the model‐predicted ecohydrological responses to climate change. We aim to enhance the Noah‐MP modeled ecosystem resilience to droughts with an explicit representation of plant water storage supplied by dynamic root water uptake through hydrotropic root growth to meet the transpiration demand. The new model represents plant stomatal water stress factor as a function of the plant water storage and relates the rate of root water uptake to the profile of model‐predicted root surface area. Through optimization of major leaf, root, and soil parameters, the new model improves the prediction of leaf area index, ecosystem productivity, evapotranspiration, and terrestrial water storage variations over most basins in the contiguous United States. Sensitivity experiments suggest that both dynamic root water uptake and groundwater capillary rise extend the plants' "memory" of antecedent rainfall. The modeled plants enhance their efficiency to use antecedent rain water stored in shallow soils mainly through more efficient root water uptake over the U.S. Southwest drylands while use that stored in deep soils and aquifers with the aid of groundwater capillary rise in the Central United States. Future plant hydraulic models should not ignore soil water retention model uncertainties and the soil macropore effects on soil water potential and infiltration. However, the plants represented in current computer models do not well survive droughts for lacking a representation of adaptation mechanisms. This study develops explicit representations of plant water storage and plant water availability, which are enhanced by root water uptake that is linked to the predicted vertical distribution of fine root biomass in response to soil water content. The new model enhances ecosystem productivity and transpiration under droughts in most large river basins in the contiguous United States. Virtual experiments reveal two "pumping" mechanisms for plants under droughts to use antecedent rain water. The plants tend to more efficiently use antecedent rain water stored in shallow soils through more efficient root water uptake over the U.S. Southwest drylands and that stored in deeper soils or aquifers with the aid of groundwater capillary rise in the Central U.S. basins. Soil water pressure becomes critically important for pushing the soil water into plant tissues and up to the leaves in the new model. Therefore, uncertainties in soil water retention models and the effects of soil macropores on soil water potential and infiltration should be well treated in future models. This study applies work motivation theories from the organizational sciences and a cultural variable to a comparative analysis of daily newspaper journalists in Taiwan and the US. The journalists were compared on measures of job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and turnover intentions. 'Culture' was measured by a collectivism tendency index. Regression analyses revealed the sharpest cultural differences for job satisfaction and theoretic predictors of it. Similarities between the journalists were found for commitment and intentions of quitting (turnover). This study's findings add to and advance research of journalists' work motivation. Abstract: Background: The Solanum species herbs have been used to treat cancer for centuries; however, the underlying mechanisms and effectiveness in vivo remain unclear. Objectives: SR-T100, extracted from the Solanum incanum, contains solamargine alkaloid as the main active ingredient. Here, we investigated the apoptosis-inducing effects of SR-T100 for targeting squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) in vitro and in vivo. Methods: We elucidated the mechanism by which SR-T100 induces apoptosis of human SCCs (A431, SCC4, SCC9, and SCC25) cells. The efficacy and safety issues were addressed regarding topical treatment of SR-T100 on UVB-induced cutaneous SCC of hairless mice and actinic keratoses (AKs) of human. Results: SR-T100 induces apoptosis in human SCCs cell lines by up-regulating the expressions of tumor necrosis factor receptors (TNFRs) and Fas, and downstream adaptors FADD/TRADD of the TNF-α and Fas ligand signaling cascades. SR-T100 also triggered the mitochondrial apoptotic pathway, as up-regulated cytochrome c and Bax, down-regulated Bcl-XL. Animal experiments showed that all papillomas (35/35) and 27 of 30 UVB-induced microinvasive SCCs in hairless mice disappeared within 10 weeks after once-daily application of topical SR-T100. Furthermore, 13 patients, who suffered with 14 AKs, were treated with once-daily topical SR-T100 gel and 10 AKs cured after 16 weeks, showing negligible discomforts. Conclusion: Our studies indicate that SR-T100 induces apoptosis of SCC cells via death receptors and the mitochondrial death pathway. The high efficacy of SR-T100 in our preclinical trial suggests that SR-T100 is a highly promising herb for AKs and related disorders. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Background: Preliminary evidence demonstrates that visit-to-visit systolic blood pressure (SBP) variability is a prognostic factor of TBI. However, literature regarding the impact of initial blood pressure management on the outcomes of TBI patients is limited. We aimed to further validate the clinical significance of BPV on the prognostic outcomes of patients with TBI., Methods: We performed the analysis by using individual patient-level data acquired from the eICU-CRD, which collected 200,859 ICU admissions of 139,367 patients in 2014 and 2015 from 208 US hospitals. Adult patients with traumatic intraparenchymal hemorrhage or contusion were included. The primary outcome was in-hospital mortality and the secondary outcome was discharge-home rate. Blood pressure variability (BPV) was calculated according to standard criteria: at least six measurements were taken in the first 24 h (hyperacute group) and 36 over days 2-7 (acute group). We estimated the associations between BPV and outcomes with logistic and proportional odds regression models. The key parameter for BPV was standard deviation (SD) of SBP, categorized into quintiles. We also calculated the average real variability (ARV), as well as maximum, minimum, and mean SBP for comparison in our analysis., Results: We studied 1486 patients in the hyperacute group and 857 in the acute group. SD of SBP had a significant association with the in-hospital mortality for both the hyperacute group (highest quintile adjusted OR 2.28 95% CI 1.18-4.42; p trend <0.001) and the acute group (highest quintile adjusted OR 2.17, 95% CI 1.08-4.36; p trend <0.001). The strongest predictors of primary outcome were SD of SBP in the hyperacute phase and minimum SBP in the acute phase. Associations were similar for the discharge-home rate (for the hyperacute group, highest quintile adjusted OR 0.58, 95% CI 0.37-0.89; p trend <0.001; for the acute group OR 0.55, 95% CI 0.32-0.95; p trend <0.001)., Conclusion: Systolic BPV seems to predict a poor outcome in patients with TBI. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are widely existing organic pollutants in the environment, and their persistence in the environment makes us have to pay continuous attention to their health effects. However, since the American Heart Association updated its definition of hypertension in 2017, few studies have explored the relationship. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between PAH exposure and hypertension after the updated definition of hypertension and explore whether body mass index (BMI) moderates this relationship. A total of 6332 adult participants from the 2009-2016 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) were examined. Multiple logistic regression and restricted cubic splines were used to analyze the association between urinary polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon metabolites and hypertension, and the dose-response relationship. Weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression was applied to blood pressure to reveal multiple exposure effects and the relative weights of each PAH. The prevalence of hypertension in the study population was 48.52%. There was a positive dose-response relationship between high exposure to 1-hydroxynaphthalene, 2&3-hydroxyphenanthrene, and the risk of hypertension. Naphthalene metabolites accounted for the most significant proportion of systolic blood pressure, and phenanthrene metabolites accounted for the most significant proportion of diastolic blood pressure. Obese individuals with high PAH exposure were at greater risk for hypertension than individuals with low PAH exposure and normal BMI. Higher prevalence rate and stronger association of metabolites with outcomes were obtained in the general population of the USA under the new guideline. High levels of exposure to PAHs were positively associated with the risk of hypertension, and these effects were modified by BMI., (© 2022. Arenaviruses are one of the largest families of human hemorrhagic fever viruses and are known to infect both mammals and snakes. Arenaviruses package a large (L) and small (S) genome segment in their virions. For segmented RNA viruses like these, novel genotypes can be generated through mutation, recombination, and reassortment. Although it is believed that an ancient recombination event led to the emergence of a new lineage of mammalian arenaviruses, neither recombination nor reassortment has been definitively documented in natural arenavirus infections. Here, we used metagenomic sequencing to survey the viral diversity present in captive arenavirus-infected snakes. From 48 infected animals, we determined the complete or near complete sequence of 210 genome segments that grouped into 23 L and 11 S genotypes. The majority of snakes were multiply infected, with up to 4 distinct S and 11 distinct L segment genotypes in individual animals. This S/L imbalance was typical: in all cases intrahost L segment genotypes outnumbered S genotypes, and a particular S segment genotype dominated in individual animals and at a population level. We corroborated sequencing results by qRT-PCR and virus isolation, and isolates replicated as ensembles in culture. Numerous instances of recombination and reassortment were detected, including recombinant segments with unusual organizations featuring 2 intergenic regions and superfluous content, which were capable of stable replication and transmission despite their atypical structures. Overall, this represents intrahost diversity of an extent and form that goes well beyond what has been observed for arenaviruses or for viruses in general. This diversity can be plausibly attributed to the captive intermingling of sub-clinically infected wild-caught snakes. Thus, beyond providing a unique opportunity to study arenavirus evolution and adaptation, these findings allow the investigation of unintended anthropogenic impacts on viral ecology, diversity, and disease potential.
