- Abstract
Schools have the potential to foster healthy behaviors among youths through sound health and physical education programs. Teacher candidates who are being certified through teacher preparation programs should take a course on basic wellness and exercise principles, in order to prepare themselves to teach those principles to all school faculty members. This way, everyone will be able to make a contribution toward and participate in the battle against obesity. This article describes how studying areas such as nutrition, exercise safety, physical-activity program design, and health-related fitness, as well as exemplifying a lifestyle of wellness and exercise, can help future teachers to positively influence youths to become more physically active. - Abstract
At the conclusion of many courses on race and racism, students, having learned, some for the first time, about the existence, origins, and complex dimensions of racial domination in America, are left pondering their next steps. "What is to be done?" many ask. "And what, exactly, is it that we want?" Important as they are, these questions too often are given insufficient attention, usually addressed at the end of the semester, sometimes only on the final day of class. And students inquiring about the most effective ways to strive toward racial justice are at a loss to find a single comprehensive source that provides them with basic analytical guidance about the goals one should work toward (the ends) or the strategies one should employ to achieve those goals (the means). We believe that students would benefit greatly from such a source, and we attempt to offer one here. To effectively address racial domination, we argue, one must have not only an idea of the means with which to struggle on behalf of a reconstructed racial order, but also an idea of the ends for which one is struggling. Accordingly, in the first major section of this article, we specify three ends: (1) a society where racial domination is addressed intelligently; (2) a society that embraces racial justice in all its arenas; and (3) a society that values and practices multiculturalism--offering a glimpse of what a society without racial domination might look like. In the following section, we specify the means--emphasizing four levels or sites of change having to do with: (1) ourselves; (2) our inner circle; (3) our institutions; and (4) our nation--offering some guidance as to how we each can do our part to bring forth a more racially just society. Although we believe this article will provide guidance for advanced scholars and instructors, we have composed it primarily with a broader audience in mind.

POLITICAL movements ,ECOSYSTEMS ,NATURE ,FEDERAL laws - Abstract
The Rights of Nature Movement, a global political movement that seeks to expand the legal rights traditionally granted to humans and corporations to natural entities like lakes, rivers, and ecosystems, is becoming more mainstream. In the United States, the movement has had successes in passing local ordinances that grant lakes and rivers the right to exist and ilourish. The most high-profile of these victories for the movement was the Lake Erie Bill of Rights. an ordinance that passed in Toledo, Ohio. in February of 2019. This Note explores the Rights of Nature Movement in the United States. The ordinances that have been enacted by various local governments generally establish the right of a river or lake to exist and flourish, and some ordinances strip corporations of their rights under state and federal law. While some saw the Lake Erie Bill of Rights ordinance as a big victory for the movement, a federal district court invalidated the ordinance in February of 2020. This Note analyzes that district court case and uses it as a foil to explore the weaknesses of the movement. This Note argues that the movement should stop focusing on local governments. and instead seek more nuanced policies at the state level, including a guardianship scheme for entities like lakes and rivers. Classroom success and academic integration are essential indicators of academic success (Tinto, 2012). Since students with disabilities, compared to students without disabilities, often face additional transitional academic issues when entering college, Ball State University developed a Faculty Mentorship Program (FMP) for students with disabilities to facilitate their academic integration. This practice brief presents a study of a nine-year longitudinal analysis of 32,409 students in three groups: students with disabilities participating in a FMP, students with disabilities not participating in the FMP, and students without disabilities. Three academic success outcomes were tracked; one-year retention, and four- and six-year graduation rates. The article also provides a thorough discussion of the portability of the program with suggestions for implementation on other campuses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Using a national sample of 7,533 U.S. adolescents in grades 6-10, this study compares the social-ecological correlates of face-to-face and cyberbullying victimization. Results indicate that younger age, male sex, hours spent on social media, family socioeconomic status (SES; individual context), parental monitoring (family context), positive feelings about school, and perceived peer support in school (school context) were negatively associated with both forms of victimization. European American race, Hispanic/Latino race (individual), and family satisfaction (family context) were all significantly associated with less face-to-face victimization only, and school pressure (school context) was significantly associated with more face-to-face bullying. Peer groups accepted by parents (family context) were related to less cyberbullying victimization, and calling/texting friends were related to more cyberbullying victimization. Research and practice implications are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

At the height of the national housing crisis, there exists but a handful of sociological studies on eviction. Even before the crisis, thousands of Americans were forcibly removed from their homes each yearâa traumatic experience linked to homelessness, job loss, and suicide. With the sharp deterioration of the housing market, the dearth of sociological research on evictions no longer marks a mere scholarly lacuna but increasingly hampers the informed design of suitable policy interventions. This study aims to fill that gap. Employing ethnographic methods to study tenants and landlords living and working in inner-city Milwaukee, it explores some of the dynamics and consequences of eviction, thereby providing a unique glimpse into the structures and practices of poor neighborhoods and the intricate workings of the low-cost housing market. A thorough analysis of evictionâits antecedents, consequences, and social ramificationsânot only advances the sociological understanding of inequality, it also provides policy-relevant insights into the central role of housing with respect to urban poverty. ..PAT.-Unpublished Manuscript [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

LACUNAE in law ,FIRE fighters ,THEORY of knowledge ,SOCIAL sciences - Abstract
Despite the recent proliferation of research on high-risk organizations, investigating the root causes of organizational breakdown, mistake, and misconduct, social scientists still know very little about the ways high-risk organizations motivate workers to participate in life-threatening activity. This article responds to this significant lacuna by analyzing how the United States Forest Service trains firefighters to conceptualize risk and death. Drawing on intimate ethnographic research and content analyses of official documents (especially fatality reports), it describes the process by which firefighters come tacitly to accept (though not without resistance) the common sense of their host organization and to develop a specific disposition towards risk-taking, what I call the 'illusio of self-determinacy,' through which they view firefighting as an activity void of danger. Firefighters quickly learn to classify fallen crewmembers as the incompetent dead; thus, although one might reasonably assume that the death of a firefighter poses a threat to a firefighter's illusio of self-determinacy, the reverse is actually the case. ..PAT.-Unpublished Manuscript [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This mixed method study examines the perceptions of both elementary and secondary principals in two northeastern states regarding the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) National Model, state-specific models of School Counseling and the role of the school counselor. One state surveyed has mandatory administrative training of the ASCA National Model and a state-specific model of school counseling while the other does not have such state mandates or an implemented model of school counseling. A fifteen-question survey was sent to four hundred ninety-eight school administrators. Results indicate little difference in knowledge of the ASCA National Model between principals in both states. The results of the study and a plan to impact principal perceptions in support of the ASCA National Model are presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The author offers opinions on the overall topic of the articles published in this issue, an examination of U.S. imperialism as a cause and effect of the Spanish-American War. As the first large U.S. intervention abroad, this period is instructive in the study of other American foreign military actions. The public debate of that time and the prevailing political and social attitudes are echoed again and again, including the discourse over the U.S. presence in Afghanistan and Iraq in the 21st century. The author sees the period of 1989-1905 as a cautionary tale for the U.S.

Jar tests were conducted on six source waters from softening plants throughout the United States to evaluate the extent of softening, natural organic matter (NOM) removal, and reduction in disinfection by-product (DBP) formation achieved by varying lime doses. Results demonstrated the effect of source water characteristics, e.g., specific ultraviolet absorbance (SUVA), bromide, and total organic carbon (TOC) on the potential for softening to remove NOM and reduce DBP formation. The source water exhibiting the lowest SUVA value had the lowest degree of NOM removal, and the source water with the highest bromide concentration showed substantial formation of bromine-substituted DBPs. These results confirmed previous observations that enhanced softening improves removal of dissolved organic carbon, decreases SUVA values, and decreases formation of dissolved organic halogen. The research also showed that both calcium carbonate and magnesium hydroxide are responsible for NOM removal in softening. With the exception of Lake Austin (Texas) source water, the waters studied would require softening to the point of magnesium hydroxide precipitation to meet required TOC removals and (in some cases) to meet the maximum contaminant level for total trihalomethanes and the sum of five haloacetic acids with lime softening alone. Rationale and Objectives: Diagnostic ultrasound examinations may be performed after-hours by physicians if technologists are not available or cases are complex. Our experience suggested there is wide variability in how ultrasound coverage is provided after-hours, which motivated us to conduct a formal survey of teaching programs around the country. Methods: Four hundred five members of the Association of Program Directors in Radiology were contacted by e-mail and sent a link to a five-part questionnaire posted on the Web. Respondents were asked whether ultrasound cases after-hours are performed in their institutions by radiology residents, technologists on the premises after-hours, technologists on-call, or some combination. Data on the type of program, number of beds in the primary hospital, number of residents in the program, and geographic location of the program were recorded. Responses were automatically written to a data file stored on a Web server and the imported into an Excel spreadsheet for data analysis. A χ
2 analysis was performed to assess associations among the variables and statistical significance. Results: A total of 79 programs responded to the survey. Of those, 32% provided coverage with ultrasound technologists on call, 24% by ultrasound technologists on the premises, 13% provided combination coverage, and 10% provided coverage solely with residents on call. There was no association among number of residents in the program, location of the program, or type of program (university, community, or affiliated) and type of coverage provided. Conclusion: There is wide variability in methods for providing coverage of after-hours ultrasound cases. However, on-site or on-call coverage of emergency cases by technologists did not appear to depend significantly on program location, program type, or program size. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]- Published

- Abstract
Background: Self-referred imaging is one of the latest health care services to be marketed directly to consumers. Most aspects of these services are unregulated, and little is known about the messages in advertising used to attract potential consumers. We conducted a detailed analysis of print advertisements and informational brochures for self-referred imaging with respect to themes, content, accuracy, and emotional valence., Methods: Forty print advertisements from US newspapers around the country and 20 informational brochures were analyzed by 2 independent raters according to 7 major themes: health care technology; emotion, empowerment, and assurance; incentives; limited supporting evidence; popular appeal; statistics; and images. The Fisher exact test was used to identify significant differences in information content., Results: Both the advertisements and the brochures emphasized health care and technology information and provided assurances of good health and incentives to self-refer. These materials also encouraged consumers to seek further information from company resources; virtually none referred to noncomplying sources of information or to the risks of having a scan. Images of people commonly portrayed European Americans. We found statistical differences between newspaper advertisements and mailed brochures for references to "prevalence of disease" (P<.001), "death" (P<.003), and "radiation" (P<.001). Statements lacking clear scientific evidence were identified in 38% of the advertisements (n = 15) and 25% of the brochures (n = 5)., Conclusions: Direct-to-consumer marketing of self-referred imaging services, in both print advertisements and informational brochures, fails to provide prospective consumers with comprehensive balanced information vital to informed autonomous decision making. Professional guidelines and oversight for advertising and promotion of these services are needed.
