This study evaluates the U.S. role in world production and trade of pistachios and identifies major factors affecting export demand for U.S. pistachios. We incorporate 21 major markets accounting for 78 percent of total U.S. pistachio exports. The impacts of market conditions and the effects of food safety shocks are investigated. The results indicate U.S. pistachio producers should take advantage of their advanced technology and reputation for higher food safety standards to enhance international market share. Necessary ingredients for a successful marketing strategy include compliance with marketing order regulations, improved food safety, and product diversification. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A dynamic gradually switching Almost Ideal Demand System (AIDS) model was developed and estimated to assess the effectiveness of non-price export promotions for U.S. poultry meat products in six major international markets. Results suggest that about 75% of the effect of promotion occurs after the first year. The marginal rates of return on investment from non-price promotion of U.S. poultry products in Singapore and the rest of the world are estimated to be $5.76 and $16.06, respectively, for the short run, and $30.39 and $61.93, respectively, for the long run. The study suggests that the export market of Japan for U.S. poultry meat products may have reached maturity as indicated by very small marginal rates of return. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

The growing openness of the U.S. economy has caused world supply and demand conditions to have significant farm-level impacts, emphasizing the important macro-economic linkages between capital, goods and factor markets in agriculture. This study considers the linkage from the international grain market to the U.S. farm income in the post-war period, 1949- 85. This linkage suggests that export demand may also have played an important role affecting land and other input prices through the derived demand relationship. Given the complicated transmission mechanism linking world markets to local farm revenues and land values, empirical support for the derived demand relationship and capitalization formula is unlikely to be clear-cut. If export demand has affected farm income and assets at significant levels over time, it stands to reason that policies which increase grain exports will continue to have a derivative impact on the farm economy over time. If farm revenues in major grain-producing states are associated with export demand to the extent reported, then government payments alone are unlikely to support the farm balance sheet for long.

The purpose of this article is to examine the stability property of the estimated export demand equation and also the empirical importance of exchange rate uncertainty on the demand for exports. The paper studies the export demand function for the United States using data provided by Moreno (1991). It concludes that his export demand equation is inherently unstable.
