Introduction: Fall Risk Appraisal (FRA), a process that integrates perceived and objective fall risk measures, serves as a crucial component for understanding the incongruence between fear of falling (FOF) and physiological fall risk in older adults. Despite its importance, scant research has been undertaken to investigate how habitual physical activity (PA) levels, quantified in Monitor-Independent Movement Summary (MIMS), vary across FRA categories. MIMS is a deviceindependent acceleration summary metric that helps standardize data analysis across studies by accounting for discrepancies in raw data among researchgrade and consumer devices. Objective: This cross-sectional study explores the associations between MIMS (volume and intensity) and FRA in a sample of older adults in the United States. Methods: We assessed FOF (Short Falls Efficacy Scale-International), physiological fall risk (balance: BTrackS Balance, leg strength: 30-s sit-tostand test) and 7-day free-living PA (ActiGraph GT9X) in 178 communitydwelling older adults. PA volume was summarized as average daily MIMS (MIMS/day). PA intensity was calculated as peak 30-min MIMS (average of highest 30 non-consecutive MIMS minutes/day), representing a PA index of higher-intensity epochs. FRA categorized participants into following four groups: Rational (low FOF-low physiological fall risk), Irrational (high FOF-low physiological fall risk), Incongruent (low FOF-high physiological fall risk) and Congruent (high FOF-high physiological fall risk). Results: Compared to rational group, average MIMS/day and peak 30-min MIMS were, respectively, 15.8% (p = .025) and 14.0% (p = .004) lower in irrational group, and 16.6% (p = .013) and 17.5% (p < .001) lower in congruent group. No significant differences were detected between incongruent and rational groups. Multiple regression analyses showed that, after adjusting for age, gender, and BMI (reference: rational), only irrational FRA was significantly associated with lower PA volume (β = −1,452.8 MIMS/day, p = .034); whereas irrational and congruent FRAs were significantly associated with lower “peak PA intensity” (irrational: β = −5.40 MIMS/day, p = .007; congruent: β = −5.43 MIMS/day, p = .004). Conclusion: These findings highlight that FOF is a significant barrier for older adults to participate in high-intensity PA, regardless of their balance and strength. Therefore, PA programs for older adults should develop tailored intervention strategies (cognitive reframing, balance and strength exercises, or both) based on an individual’s FOF and physiological fall risk. Background: Certain types of cancer and treatment increase the risk of falls among cancer patients, particularly patients with hematologic cancer undergoing bone marrow transplant (BMT). Nurses are integral to preventing falls and maintaining patient safety. Understanding patients undergoing BMT fall risk factors may help nurses identify high fall risk patients and develop fall prevention interventions. Purpose: This systematic review aims to identify risk factors for falls among hospitalized adult patients receiving BMT treatment. Methods: Guided by the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta‐Analyses, a systematic review of the literature was conducted by searching databases PubMed and CINAHL. Study quality was evaluated using the Crowe Critical Appraisal Tool form (v1.4). Findings: An initial search yielded 829 articles; six were included for final review after removing duplicates and screening for inclusion criteria: specific to patients undergoing BMT, measure fall outcome, in hospital, and original research. The identified risk factors include age of 65 and older, leukemia diagnosis, days of diarrhea, incontinence of urine or stool, increased pulse rate, muscle weakness, hypnotic, anxiolytic medication, recent steroid use, allogenic transplant, and post‐engraftment period. Conclusions: Risk factors for falls among patients undergoing BMT are multifactorial and are related to muscle weakness, medication administration, pulse rate, type of transplant, age, engraftment period, and bathroom use. Implications for nursing: Nurses providing care to patients undergoing BMT need to assess and increase nurse surveillance on allogeneic transplant patients, specifically those on anxiolytic, hypnotic, and steroid medications. Nurses providing care to patients undergoing BMT should implement more fall prevention strategies in patients undergoing BMT who develop diarrhea and urine or stool incontinence. Identifying specific patients undergoing BMT fall risk factors and applying multifaceted individualized fall prevention strategies has the potential to improve allogeneic transplant patient care and prevent fall‐related complications. Purpose: Dog walking is a popular daily activity, yet information regarding its injury burden is limited. This study describes the epidemiology of injuries related to leash-dependent dog walking among adults presenting to US emergency departments from 2001 to 2020. Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed using the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System database to identify adults (≥18 yr) presenting to US emergency departments with leash-dependent dog walking-related injuries between 2001 and 2020. Outcomes included annual estimates of injury incidence, injury characteristics, and risk factors for sustaining a fracture or traumatic brain injury (TBI). Weighted estimates and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were generated using National Electronic Injury Surveillance System sample weights. Results: Between 2001 and 2020, an estimated 422,659 adults presented to US emergency departments with injuries related to leash-dependent dog walking. The annual incidence increased more than fourfold during this period (n = 7282 vs n = 32,306, P < 0.001). Most patients were women (75%) and adults age 40 to 64 yr (47%), with a mean age of 53 ± 0.5 yr. Patients commonly injured their upper extremity (51%) and were injured while falling when pulled or tripped by the leash (55%). The three most common injuries were linger fracture (6.9%), TBI (5.6%), and shoulder sprain/strain (5.1%). On multivariate analysis, fracture risk among dog walkers was higher in adults age ≥65 yr (odds ratio [OR], 2.1; 95% CI, 1.8-2.5) and women (OR, 1.5; 95% CI, 1.3-1.7). Risk of TBI was also elevated among older dog walkers (OR, 1.6; 95% CI, 1.3-2.0). Conclusions: Dog walking is associated with a considerable and rising injury burden. Aim: Describe the 3- and 6-month outcomes and perceptions of older adults who participated in a HOP-UP-PT clinical trial. Methods: A questionnaire was administered to HOP-UP-PT participants to garner frequency of self-reported falls, healthcare utilization, perceptions of interventions, and fiscal considerations 3- and 6- months after program completion. Results: 76 total respondents, mean age 77 (SD = 7) years and 75% female. A fall was reported by 12% and 16%, additional therapy needs by 16% and 17%, and hospitalization by 3% and 6% at the 3- and 6-month encounters, respectively. Respondents agreed or strongly agreed to positive benefits of the HOP-UP-PT interventions as follows: exercise (71%, 69%), wearable activity monitor (59%, 59%), automated blood pressure monitor (78%, 87%), and improved nutrition (48%, 41%). Respondents were willing to contribute 10% of program cost and 93% supported insurers covering the cost gap. Objectives: To describe the prevalence of bathroom modifications, clutter, and tripping hazards in the homes of US older adults and to examine changes after an incident fall. Methods: We used data from the 2015--2017 National Health and Aging Trends Study (n = 7499). Outcomes were the prevalence of bathroom modifications, clutter, and tripping hazards and changes after incident fall. Results: In 2015, 26.5% of community-dwelling older adults had clutter or tripping hazards in the home, and 69.3% had at least one bathroom modification. Compared to nonfallers, older adults with multiple falls were significantly more likely to modify the bathroom. The magnitude of hazard reduction was similar after multiple falls but was not statistically significant. Discussion: Bathroom modifications are common and increase after multiple falls. A single incident fall does not appear to lead to home environment changes to reduce fall risk. Targeting home hazards may be an opportunity to reduce fall risk. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: The purpose of this study was to examine self-reported falls and fall risk factors in people with type 2 diabetes mellitus aged under 65 years. Methods: This study was a cross-sectional analysis of 64 participants at a primary care facility in the western United States of America. The following fall risk factors were examined for differences between groups (fallers vs. non-fallers): age, body mass index, depression, fear of falling, neuropathy, number of medications, sedentary behavior, and visual co-morbidities. Multivariate logistic regression was used to determine relationships with self-reported falls (yes/no recent fall as defined by the participant). Results: Forty-five percent of participants reported a recent fall. The following fall risk factors produced significant differences between fallers and non-fallers: depression scores (p =.01), fear of falling (p <.01), and number of medications currently being taken (p =.04). Through multivariate logistic regression, the fear of falling score (p <.01) was the only significant relationship with self-reported falls in the model that included age, body mass index, depression, fear of falling, neuropathy, number of medications, sedentary behavior, and visual co-morbidities. Conclusion: Psychological fall risk factors such as fear of falling are factors that should be considered early on in a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes mellitus because they may have an effect on falls, as evidenced in this sample of adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus aged under 65 years. Computerized dynamic posturography (CDP) provides multisensory assessment of balance. Consensus is lacking regarding CDP utility and coverage determinations vary. To inform best practices and policy, this cross-sectional study quantifies provider use of CDP among Medicare beneficiaries over time (2012-2017), by geographic region (hospital referral region [HRR]), and specialty. We observed 195,267 beneficiaries underwent 212,847 CDP tests totaling $15,780,001 in payments. Number of CDPs billed per 100,000 beneficiaries varied 534-fold across HRRs. Over 6 years, CDP use grew by 84% despite stagnant reimbursement. More utilization was attributable to primary care clinicians than specialties focused on care for dizziness and balance disorders. The observed growth and variation illustrate the potential for policy and provider preferences to drive unexpected practice patterns and underscore the need to engage a broad network of providers to develop optimal guidelines for use. • The STEADI is an evidenced-based, multi-factorial resource to assist primary care clinicians with preventing falls and associated costs in older adults. • Results indicate that the algorithm demonstrated weaknesses with identifying fallers. • Results indicate that the algorithm performed better in community vs. retirement facility dwellers. • Results suggest that it is important to conduct more than one mobility or balance screening test. • Results indicate that elevated STEADI risk classifications were not linked to advancing age. The CDC developed the STEADI toolkit to assist providers with incorporating fall risk screening, assessment of modifiable risk factors, and implementing evidence-based treatment strategies. The purpose of this study was two-fold: analyze the STEADI algorithm for strengths/weaknesses based upon inferential data and provide recommendations for additional research and possible limitations of the STEADI toolkit from a physical therapy perspective. This investigation employed a quantitative, cross-sectional cohort design collating data from community-dwelling and retirement-facility seniors (n = 77) from two regions of the U.S. Data is reported based upon descriptive statistics, correlation, and validity of the STEADI algorithm, its subcomponent tests, and self-reported fall data. All participants completed the Stay Independent Brochure (SIB) and the algorithm's mobility, balance, and lower extremity strength tests regardless of risk categorization. Sensitivity of the STEADI with discriminating fallers and predicting future falls was better among community-dwellers (73–80%) versus the retirement facility-dwellers (56–62%). The STEADI demonstrated high false negative rates among those categorized as low risk as 57% community-dwellers and 24% facility-dwellers fell in the prior 12 months and several fell within 6 months following participation. Results suggest that it is important to conduct more than one mobility or balance screening test, and indicate that elevated STEADI risk classification was not associated with advancing age. Outcomes from this study suggest that cut-off scores and the selection of functional fall screening tests, as well as the relative weights and scoring of items on the SIB/3KQ be reevaluated to maximize discriminate and predictive validity of the algorithm. This study identifies risk and protective factors for falls among older, community-dwelling African Americans. Drawing upon the biopsychosocial perspective, we conducted a series of sex- and age-adjusted multinomial logistic regression analyses to identify the correlates of fall events among older African Americans. Our sample consisted of 1,442 community-dwelling African Americans aged 65 and older, participating in the 2010-2012 rounds of the Health and Retirement Study. Biophysical characteristics associated with greater relative risk of experiencing single and/or multiple falls included greater functional limitations, poorer self-rated health, poorer self-rated vision, chronic illnesses (high blood pressure, diabetes, cancer, lung disease, heart problems, stroke, and arthritis), greater chronic illness comorbidity, older age, and female sex. Physical activity was negatively associated with recurrent falls. Among the examined psychosocial characteristics, greater depressive symptoms were associated with greater relative risk of experiencing single and multiple fall events. Background Falls are among the most common potentially preventable adverse events. Current pediatric falls risk assessment methods have poor precision and accuracy. Objective To evaluate an inpatient pediatric fall risk assessment index, known as the Little Schmidy, and describe characteristics of pediatric falls. Design Retrospective case control and descriptive study. The dataset included 114 reported falls and 151,678 Little Schmidy scores documented in medical records during the 5-year study period (2007–2011). Setting Pediatric medical and surgical inpatient units of an academic medical center in the western United States. Participants Pediatric hospital inpatients <25 years of age. Methods Nurses used the 5-item, 7-point Little Schmidy to assess fall risk each day and night shift throughout the patient’s hospitalization. Conditional fixed-effects logistic regressions were used to examine predictive relationships between Little Schmidy scores (at admission, highest prior to fall, and just prior to fall) and the patient’s fall status (fell or not). The sensitivity and specificity of different cut-off scores were explored. Associations between Little Schmidy scores and patient and hospitalization factors were examined using multilevel mixed-effects logistic regression and multilevel mixed-effects ordinal logistic regression. Results Little Schmidy scores were significantly associated with pediatric falls (p < 0.005). Maximal performance was achieved with a 4-item, 4-point, Little Schmidy index (LS4) using a cut-off score of 1 to indicate fall risk with sensitivity of 79% and specificity of 49%. Patients with an LS4 score ≥1 were 4 times more likely to fall before the next assessment than patients with a score of 0. LS4 scores indicative of fall risk were associated with age ≥5 years, neurological diagnosis, multiple hospitalizations, and night shift, but not with sex, length of hospital stay, or hospital unit. Of the 114 reported falls, 64% involved a male patient, nearly one third (32%) involved adolescents (13–17 years), most resulted in no (59%) or mild (36%) injury, and most (54%) were related to diagnosis or clinical characteristics. For 60% of the falls, fall precautions had been implemented prior to the fall. Conclusions The revised 4-item Little Schmidy, the LS4, predicts pediatric falls when administered every day and night shift, but identifies most patients (65%) as being at risk for fall. Strategies for improving the accuracy and efficiency of the assessments are proposed. Objectives:This study aims to examine the relationship between middle-aged and older adults’ depressive symptomology and anti-depressant use and the frequency of falls within the previous 12 months, controlling for sociodemographic variables, health indicators, and health behaviors. Method:From the 2010 National Social Life, Health, and Aging Project, 2338 cases were examined. Falls were categorized into a binary variable, comparing zero falls with one or more falls. An unadjusted model was run to examine the relationship between independent and dependent variables. Potential covariates were added into the model, and backward elimination was used among independent variables with a univariateP< 0.05 to identify the covariates with the strongest association with falls. This final adjusted binary logistic regression model was then used to examine the relationship between falls and the independent variables. Results:In the adjusted model, anti-depressant use was positively associated with falls (P= 0.001), as was being female (P< 0.001), having diabetes (P= 0.018), and having increased limitations in daily activities (P< 0.001). The relationship between depressive symptomology and anti-depressant prescription was also significantly associated with falls (P= 0.006). Conclusion:While findings confirm that a relationship between depressive symptomology and anti-depressant use are associated with falls among middle-aged and older adults, additional studies are needed that simultaneously examine the influence of these two risk factors. Falls are common in nursing homes (NHs) and may result in serious injury to the resident as well as legal and regulatory liability for the NH. Some of these falls and injuries might be avoided if attending physicians were involved in risk reduction. I developed a communication tool to solicit from attending physicians specific risks for patients most likely to experience a fall and injury, and to consider strategies to reduce those risks. The communication tool addresses medications, osteopenia, vitamin D deficiency, vision, hearing, gait/balance/peripheral sensation, injury mitigation, altered mental status, restraints, and philosophy of treatment. An important component of implementation is to ensure full participation by the attending physician. Hospital nurses often experience challenges when teaching older adults about fall prevention strategies. The goal of this project was to provide evidence-based training to hospital nurses to facilitate patient engagement with fall prevention measures. Methods: An "Adapted" Motivational Interviewing (MI) for fall prevention (AMIFP) training in acute care was developed and introduced to nurses as part of a Veterans Affairs-Nursing Academic Partnership (VANAP) initiative. Pre/post surveys were completed by 61 nurses (71% response rate) at an acute care hospital in the United States. Results: After the single AMIFP training, nurses reported having increased knowledge about patient engagement related to fall prevention. Moreover, feelings of confidence related to using some MI skills for fall prevention increased after training. Conclusion: Even a brief AMIFP training for nurses can have a positive impact on improving hospital nurses' knowledge and attitudes to engage patients in fall prevention education. Abstract: Falls are one of the major causes of mortality and morbidity in older adults. Every year, an estimated 30–40% of patients over the age of 65 will fall at least once. Falls lead to moderate to severe injuries, fear of falling, loss of independence and death in a third of those patients. The direct costs alone from fall related injuries are a staggering 0.1% of all healthcare expenditures in the United States and up to 1.5% of healthcare costs in European countries. This figure does not include the indirect costs of loss of income both to the patient and caregiver, the intangible losses of mobility, confidence, and functional independence. Numerous studies have attempted to define the risk factors for falls in older adults. The present review provides a brief summary and update of the relevant literature, summarizing demographic and modifiable risk factors. The major risk factors identified are impaired balance and gait, polypharmacy, and history of previous falls. Other risk factors include advancing age, female gender, visual impairments, cognitive decline especially attention and executive dysfunction, and environmental factors. Introduction: Fall risk is a major contributor to fracture risk; implementing fall reduction programmes remains a challenge for health professionals and policymakers. Materials and methods: We aimed to (1) ascertain whether the care received by 54 older adults after an emergency department (ED) fall presentation met internationally recommended 'Guideline Care', and (2) prospectively evaluate this cohort's 6-month change in fall risk profile. Participants were men and women aged 70 years or older who were discharged back into the community after presenting to an urban university tertiary-care hospital emergency department with a fall-related complaint. American Geriatric Society (AGS) guideline care was documented by post-presentation emergency department chart examination, daily patient diary of falls submitted monthly, patient interview and physician reconciliation where needed. Both at study entry and at a 6-month followup, we measured participants physiological characteristics by Lord's Physiological Profile Assessment (PPA), functional status, balance confidence, depression, physical activity and other factors. Results: We found that only 2 of 54 (3.7%) of the fallers who presented to the ED received care consistent with AGS Guidelines. Baseline physiological fall risk scores classified the study population at a 1.7 SD higher risk than a 65-year-old comparison group, and during the 6-month followup period the mean fall-risk score increased significantly (i.e. greater risk of falls) (1.7±1.6 versus 2.2±1.6, p=0.000; 29.5% greater risk of falls). Also, functional ability [100 (15) versus 95 (25), p=0.002], balance confidence [82.5 (44.4) versus 71.3 (58.7), p=0.000] and depression [0 (2) versus 0 (3), p=0.000] all worsened over 6 months. Within 6 months of the index ED visit, five participants had suffered six fall-related fractures. Discussion: We conclude that this group of community-dwelling fallers, who presented for ED care with a clinical profile suggesting a high risk of further falls and fracture, did not receive Guideline care and worsened in their fall risk profile by 29.5%. Cannabis is one of the most common drugs in the United States and is the third most prevalent substance consumed by adults aged 50 years and older. Normal aging is associated with physiological changes that make older adults vulnerable to impaired function and geriatric conditions (e.g., falls, cognitive impairment). However, the impact of medical cannabis use on fall risk in older adults remains unexplored. The purpose of this study was to investigate if cannabis use in older adults influences fall risk, cognitive function, and motor function. It was hypothesized that older chronic cannabis users would perform worse than non-users on gait, balance, and cognitive tests. Sixteen older adults, split into cannabis Users and age- and sex-matched Non-Users groups (n = 8/group), participated in the study. The results indicate a higher fall risk, worse one leg standing balance performance, and slower gait speed in Users vs. Non-Users. No significant differences in cognitive function were found. Thus, chronic cannabis use was purported to exacerbate the poorer balance control and slower gait velocity associated with normal aging. Future mechanistic (e.g., neuroimaging) investigations of the short- and long-term effects of using a variety of cannabis products (e.g., THC/CBD ratios, routes of administration) on cognitive function, motor function, and fall incidence in older adults are suggested. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Stopping Elderly Accidents, Deaths & Injuries (STEADI) toolkit is a national effort to prevent falls among older adults. Studies have been conducted on implementation of the STEADI, but no studies have investigated older adults' adherence to or perceptions of fall prevention recommendations delineated within the STEADI algorithm. Semistructured interviews were conducted with a purposive sample of older adults 6 months after attending a falls risk assessment. Seventy-nine percent accurately recalled their fall risk, 57% followed one or more recommendations, and 32% did not recall at least one recommendation correctly. The most common recommendation recalled and adhered to was exercise. No participants recalled or adhered to recommendations including medication review, taking time changing positions, vision check, podiatrist visit, or physical therapy. Thirty-two percent fell. Of these, 55.6% did not follow any recommendations. Interview transcripts were analyzed using comparative methodology following the tenets of thematic analysis. Three themes emerged: participating in fall prevention, barriers to following recommendations, and providers can encourage people to prevent falls. An unexpected facilitator to participation in fall prevention efforts emerged-older adults' perception that they were positively influencing society by participating in research and working with students and the university. This finding provides an opportunity for providers of health education to address the growing public health issue of falls among older adults while also creating opportunities for students to engage in community service and interdisciplinary service learning.

The high number of patient falls occurring within acute care hospitals throughout the United States has led to increased patient impairment and contributed to rising healthcare costs. The Morse Fall Risk Scale is a commonly used assessment tool for prediction of a patient's potential for experiencing a fall while in a healthcare facility. This retrospective study reviewed the use of the Morse Fall Risk Scale in a 300+ bed acute care hospital setting to determine adequacy for patient fall predictions over a four-month period. Use of multivariate regressions and Chi-Square test statistics revealed the Morse Fall Risk Scale was a predictor of patients' fall risk in this setting with other significant predictors of fall risk potential including male gender and diagnosis (neurologic, cardiac, general medical/surgical conditions). Patients experiencing a fall had a statistically significant longer hospital stay. Occupational therapy practitioners play an important role on the interdisciplinary team by providing a comprehensive fall assessment, developing fall prevention programs, and providing discharge recommendations.

Background: Injurious falls among older adults are both common and costly. The prevalence of falls is known to increase with age and with use of fall-risk drugs/potentially inappropriate medications (FRD/PIM). Little is known about the joint effects of these two risk factors., Methods: Data for 2013-2015 were obtained from the Truven Health MarketScan® Medicare database comprising utilization and eligibility (enrollment) data for approximately 4 million enrollees annually. A case-control design was used to compare enrollees aged 65-99 years diagnosed with > 1 fall event (n = 110,625) with enrollees without falls (n = 1,567,412). An exploratory analysis of joint age-FRD/PIM effects on fall risks was based on number needed to harm (NNH) calculations for each FRD/PIM therapy class count (compared with 0 FRD/PIMs), stratified by age group. Logistic regression analyses adjusted for demographics, comorbidities, and fracture history, measured in the 1 year prior to the fall date (cases) or a randomly assigned date (controls)., Results: For each FRD/PIM class count, NNH values decreased with older age (e.g., for 1 FRD/PIM class: from NNH = 333 for ages 65-74 years to NNH = 83 for ages 90-99 years; for 2 FRD/PIM classes: from NNH = 91 for ages 65-74 years to NNH = 38 for ages 90-99 years). NNH decreased to < 15 patients at > 6 classes for age 65-74 years, > 5 classes for age 75-84 years, and > 4 classes for age 85-99 years. Adjusted odds of falling were increased for age-FRD/PIM combinations with smaller NNH values: adjusted odds ratio (AOR) = 1.127 (95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.098-1.156) for NNH = 83-91; AOR = 1.427 (95% CI = 1.398-1.456) for NNH = 17-48; AOR = 1.983 (1.9034-2.032) for NNH < 15., Conclusion: FRD/PIM use and age appear to have joint effects on fall risk. Older adults at high risk, indicated by small NNH, may be appropriate for fall prevention initiatives, and clinicians may wish to consider decreasing the number of FRD/PIMs utilized by these patients.

Background: Readmission among Medicare recipients is a leading driver of healthcare expenditure. To date, most predictive tools are too coarse for direct clinical application. Our objective in this study is to determine if a pre-existing tool to identify patients at increased risk for inpatient falls, the Hendrich Fall Risk Score, could be used to accurately identify Medicare patients at increased risk for readmission following arthroplasty, regardless of whether the readmission was due to a fall., Methods: This study is a retrospective cohort study. We identified 2437 Medicare patients who underwent a primary elective total joint arthroplasty (TJA) of the hip or knee for osteoarthritis between 2011 and 2014. The Hendrich Fall Risk score was recorded for each patient preoperatively and postoperatively. Our main outcome measure was hospital readmission within 30 days of discharge., Results: Of 2437 eligible TJA recipients, there were 226 (9.3%) patients who had a score ≥6. These patients were more likely to have an unplanned readmission (unadjusted odds ratio 2.84, 95% confidence interval 1.70-4.76, P < .0001), were more likely to have a length of stay >3 days (49.6% vs 36.6%, P = .0001), and were less likely to be sent home after discharge (20.8% vs 35.8%, P < .0001). The effect of a score ≥6 on readmission remained significant (adjusted odds ratio 2.44, 95% confidence interval 1.44-4.13, P = .0009) after controlling for age, paralysis, and the presence of a major psychiatric disorder., Conclusion: Increased Hendrich fall risk score after TJA is strongly associated with unplanned readmission. Background: A seven-item cancer-specific fall risk tool (Cleveland Clinic Capone-Albert [CC-CA] Fall Risk Score) was shown to have a strong concordance index for predicting falls; however, validation of the model is needed., Objectives: The aims of this study were to validate that the CC-CA Fall Risk Score, made up of six factors, predicts falls in patients with cancer and to determine if the CC-CA Fall Risk Score performs better than the Morse Fall Tool., Methods: Using a prospective, comparative methodology, data were collected from electronic health records of patients hospitalized for cancer care in four hospitals. Risk factors from each tool were recorded, when applicable. Multivariable models were created to predict the probability of a fall. A concordance index for each fall tool was calculated., Findings: The CC-CA Fall Risk Score provided higher discrimination than the Morse Fall Tool in predicting fall events in patients hospitalized for cancer management.
