Narcissus (Narcissus albidus) imported from the United States exhibited leaf chlorosis during post-entry quarantine. We employed next-generation sequencing (NGS) on symptomatic leaf samples and detected vallota mosaic virus (ValMV), belonging to the genus Potyvirus, family Potyviridae, as the viral agent. Sanger sequencing of PCR products and rapid amplification of cDNA ends based on NGS contigs revealed that ValMV is 9,451 nucleotides (nt) in length, excluding the poly(A) tail. Nucleotide and amino acid (aa) sequences of the coat protein region had over 98% identity to previously reported ValMV isolates. In each of the 10 regions encoding mature proteins, however, the sequence identity to other potyviruses was 49.5-71.9% nt and 18.3-78.9% aa, values that are below the species demarcation thresholds for the family Potyviridae. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that our ValMV isolate is most closely related to known ValMV isolates and is grouped with other potyviruses. Taken together, our results indicate that the newly isolated ValMV belongs to a distinct species in the genus Potyvirus. Background: Research is lacking for understanding the health disparities in cancer survivorship in the lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) population in the United States. Self-reported health status is used as a predictor of health disparities., Methods: This secondary data analysis study used 2018 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System data to analyze cancer survivorship characteristics by sexual orientation and sex through the use of logistic regressions., Results: Overall, 17,656,329 US cancer survivors were included in this study after weighting, with percentage estimates of 1.52% for gays/lesbians and 1.41% for bisexuals. LGB participants were younger and more ethnically diverse. Significantly, bisexuals had current smoking (32.3% vs 13.6%) and binge drinking rates (17.1% vs 9.1%) twice those of heterosexuals; 16.6% of bisexuals versus 4.1% of heterosexuals reported no health insurance coverage (P < .0001). After adjustments for socioeconomic, health-related behavioral risk, and health care access factors, bisexual females reported poorer general health (odds ratio [OR], 1.33; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.31-1.36) as well as mental health (OR, 2.43; 95% CI, 2.39-2.46) than their heterosexual peers (P < .0001). Bisexual males were 5.14 times more likely to be told that they had depressive disorders than their heterosexual counterparts (95% CI, 5.05-5.23), whereas bisexual females were 3.23 times more likely for the same outcome (95% CI, 3.18-3.28). All LGB groups reported significantly more inadequate sleep than their heterosexual counterparts (especially lesbians: OR, 2.14; 95% CI, 2.10-2.18)., Conclusions: This study indicates that LGB cancer survivors have worse survivorship than their heterosexual peers with heterogeneity in subgroups. Future studies should use larger sample sizes, further investigate disparities, and promote survivorship in LGB populations., Lay Summary: It has been observed that lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) cancer survivors may face challenges in cancer survivorship that are not as prevalent in the heterosexual community. This cross-sectional study has found that LGB cancer survivors, especially bisexuals, have overall poorer physical and mental health, are more likely to be told that they have depressive disorders, and have worse sleep quality in comparison with their heterosexual counterparts. Background: Use of neoadjuvant therapy for elderly patients with pancreatic cancer has been debatable. With FOLFIRINOX (folinic acid, 5-fluorouracil, irinotecan, oxaliplatin) or gemcitabine plus nab-paclitaxel (GnP) showing tremendous effects in improving the overall survival of patients with borderline resectable and locally advanced pancreatic cancer, there is no definitive consensus regarding the use of this regimen in the elderly., Methods: This study evaluated the eligibility of elderly patients with borderline resectable or locally advanced pancreatic cancer for neoadjuvant therapy. Patients registered in the database of pancreatic cancer at the University of Colorado Cancer Center, who underwent neoadjuvant treatment between January 2011 and March 2019, were separated into three age groups (less than 70, 70-74, 75 or more years) and respective treatment outcomes were compared., Results: The study included 246 patients with pancreatic cancer who underwent neoadjuvant treatment, of whom 154 and 71 received chemotherapy with FOLFIRINOX and GnP respectively. Among these 225 patients, 155 were younger than 70 years, 36 were aged 70-74 years, and 34 were aged 75 years or older. Patients under 70 years old received FOLFIRINOX most frequently (124 of 155 versus 18 of 36 aged 70-74 years, and 12 of 34 aged 75 years or more; P < 0.001). Resectability was similar among the three groups (60.0, 58.3, and 55.9 per cent respectively; P = 0.919). Trends towards shorter survival were observed in the elderly (median overall survival time 23.6, 18.0, and 17.6 months for patients aged less than 70, 70-74, and 75 or more years respectively; P = 0.090). After adjusting for co-variables, age was not a significant predictive factor., Conclusion: The safety and efficacy of multiagent chemotherapy in patients aged 75 years or over were similar to those in younger patients. In the United States, through nation-wide discussions, the procedures for handling allegations of research misconduct are now well established. Procedures are geared toward carefully treating both complainants and respondents fairly in accordance with the US framework. Other countries, which have their own cultural and legal framework, also need fair and legally compatible procedures for conducting investigations of allegations of research misconduct. Given the rapid growth of international collaboration in research, it is desirable to have a global standard, or common ground, for misconduct investigations. Institutions need clear guidance on important subjects such as what information should be included in the investigation reports, how the investigation committee should be organized once research misconduct allegation has been received, how to conduct the investigation, how the data and information obtained should be taken as evidence for vs. against misconduct, and what policies the investigation committee should follow. We explore these issues from the viewpoint of members of committees investigating accusations of research misconduct (hereafter referred to as "investigation committees") as well as persons overseeing the committees in Japan. We hope to engender productive discussions among experts in misconduct investigations, leading to a formulation of international standards for such investigation.

The prognostic significance of FLT3-tyrosine kinase domain (TKD) mutations remains unknown. To investigate the prognostic impact of FLT3-TKD, 676 de novo acute myeloid leukemia (AML), we retrospectively analyzed cases and conducted a review of the literature. Of the 676 de novo AML cases, 34 (5.0%) were FLT3-TKD-positive; both FLT3-TKD and FLT3-ITD were noted in only two cases (0.3%). Although no significant differences in relapse-free survival (RFS) were noted, FLT3-TKD-positive cases showed better prognoses than FLT3-ITD-positive cases (FLT3-TKD versus FLT3-ITD, p = 0.152). For overall survival (OS), although FLT3-TKD-positive cases showed prognoses similar to those for FLT3-WT cases, their prognoses were significantly better than those of FLT3-ITD-positive cases (FLT3-TKD versus FLT3-ITD, p = 0.032). Moreover, the 5-year OS for FLT3-TKD-positive cases was 46.1%, indicating that this as an intermediate prognosis group. Although no reports from Asia have indicated a frequency of FLT3-TKD-positive cases > 10%, several reports from Europe and the United States have indicated frequencies > 10%. This suggests the possibility that FLT3-TKD-positive cases are less common in Asia than in Europe and the United States. We anticipate that in the future, the appearance of targeting agents, such as FLT3 inhibitors, will improve the prognosis of FLT3-TKD-positive AML relative to that of FLT3-WT AML.

This study aimed to analyze the oncology "drug lag" (i.e., the delay in time required for the approval of oncology drugs) in Japan compared with that in the United States of America (US) or the European Union (EU) and to identify the factors associated with this lag. Using publicly available information, we collected data on 42 approvals of 30 oncology drugs in Japan, the US, and the EU that included dates of drug development initiation, submission, review, and approval. Lags in each step of the process were then examined and compared among the three regions. We found that median submission and approval lag times between Japan and the US were 20.0 and 29.9 months, respectively, while those between Japan and the EU were 14.9 and 21.3 months, respectively. The median review periods for Japan, the US, and the EU were 14.3, 6.0, and 13.2 months, respectively, and the median lag in initiation of oncology drug development between Japan and the US/EU was 38.9 months. The proportion of approvals for which Japanese Phase I registration trials started after corresponding approvals in the US were 39% compared with 47% for the EU. Multivariate analysis suggests that delays in the initiation of drug development and the extended length of the regulatory review period in Japan may contribute to the longer oncology drug lag observed in Japan compared with that of the US or EU.
