Adolescent political participation and belief in the institutional legitimacy have been widely used as predictors of long-term prosocial behaviors within the field of political science. However, this topic has not been extensively examined within sociology or criminology. This study attempts to rectify gaps within criminology as well as extend related works in political science by addressing how political institutional legitimacy and civic participation are related to delinquency. Previous studies suggest that there is an inverse relationship between political beliefs and participation and antisocial behavior. The findings of the current study indicate a strong relationship between delinquency and faith in American political institutions. The relationships, however, vary in direction by type of political measure suggesting partial support for existing political science research. This study critiques the educational program policies based on existing research. Further policy implications of the current findings are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
