This essay makes the case for the 1968 community newspaper Black Newark as an archival site that provides an alternative account of the growth of the Black Power movement in the city of Newark. The issues written about in this radical publication are an abundant resource for historians and researchers of New Jersey culture and Black cultural production in the United States. This essay contests the fact that no books devoted to the history of the Black press in the United States or surveys of African American newspapers make mention of Black Newark. It is the aim of this essay to examine both the 1968 edition of Black Newark and the later 1972-1974 edition of Black New Ark with the express goal of including the publications in the archive of both the history of Newark, New Jersey, and the Black press in the United States. The year of 2017 marked the centennial of Denmark's sale of the former Danish West Indies to the United States of America, today the US Virgin Islands (USVI). The colonial archives figured prominently during the year-long commemorations in Denmark, as the Danish National Archives digitized and publicly released the colonial records of the islands of St. Croix, St. Thomas and St. John. Drawing on cultural theories as well as debates in archival science, this article proposes the notion of 'archival encounter' to centre the ethical-epistemological challenges of digitization and to emphasize the intersected problematics raised by the encounter between the colonial, the archival and the digital. The article begins by revisiting the history of these archives in order to situate the digitization of these records within debates on provenance, custody and access. It then introduces some of the debates taking place within the field of Atlantic slavery, as well as feminist and critical race theories, to argue that the digitization of the USVI records recasts questions about the limitations and possibilities of colonial archives. Furthermore, the article contends that digitality and datafication are indebted to colonial histories of quantification that structure the technological encounter with the colonial archive. Finally, the article builds on these theorizations to amplify recent calls for a feminist ethics of care in archival praxis. Drawing on postcolonial critiques, the article problematizes and situates the notion of care within the colonial and non-innocent histories in which it is embedded, in order to align ethics of care with a critical reorientation of digital colonial archives. Marshalling a postcolonial feminist critique of care as a framework for thinking, the article suggests, can help us to realign archival encounters in ways that that more pointedly confront the colonial legacies of our present. This article tells the story of the Harvard Commission on Western History (1912–1920) and its principal collector, Thomas P. Martin, a graduate student of Frederick Jackson Turner. Martin attempted to parlay his western background into donations to Harvard Library's western history collection, but many westerners objected to sharing their archival material with an elite eastern institution. Martin's correspondence reveals how western collectors viewed and imagined the U.S. East, suggesting an East of the imagination as rich in potential for study as the imagined West. The article discusses the history and development of the Dismas House Records in St. Louis, Missouri. According to the article, the Dismas House was the first halfway house for ex-prisoners in the U.S. and was developed by Catholic priest Dismas Clark in the mid-20th century. The article states that the Dismas House Records contain biographical material on Clark's early life and focuses upon the Dismas House between 1959 to 1978. The article also discusses the role of Russian Jewish immigrant Morris Shenker in the development of Dismas House. The article examines the notoriety Clark and Dismas House gained following the release of the motion picture "The Hoodlum Priest" in 1961.

The article presents information about the George Meany Memorial Archives, for which a new building was dedicated on the campus of the George Meany Center for Labor Studies in Silver Spring, Maryland, ending the formative years of the Archives and creating a national center for the study of the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO). The Meany Archives serves as the official archives of the AFL-CIO and has defined as its collecting scope the records of the federation and its predecessor organizations, the constitutional trade and industrial departments, affiliated institutes and selected personal papers of AFL-CIO officers and staff. It is the plan of the Archives to eventually become a national clearing house for information about labor-related archival collections through participation in the Chadwick-Healey Inc. micropublication "The National Inventory of Documentary Sources in the United States" and through cooperation with the "Labor Archives Roundtable of the Society of American Archivists."

The year 1989 marks the 20th anniversary of the founding of the Southern Labor Archives in Atlanta, Georgia. In 1982, 1984, and 1986 the Southern Labor Archives sponsored the Southern Labor Studies Conference. In 1984 the Conference was held in Arlington, Texas, in cooperation with the Southwestern Labor Studies Association. In 1985 the Southern Labor Archives received support from the Georgia Humanities Council to create a traveling exhibit on the history of textile workers, nationally, regionally, and in two particular mill towns in Georgia. The Southern Labor Archives also helped the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers celebrate its centennial in 1988. The American Library Association honored the Southern Labor Archives in 1988 by giving it the John Sessions Memorial Award for outstanding service to the labor community. The Archives will soon be sponsoring, with the Bill Usery Labor Management Relations Foundation and the U.S. Department of Labor, a major conference on the past, present, and future of the U.S. labor policy.

The article focuses on the creation of an electronic record for the documents of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights (USCCR) publications as done by the Thurgood Marshall Law Library. The record has been implemented in conjunction with the library's strategic plan to enhance its civil rights collection in support of the School of Law's teaching and research mission, and has been available on the USCCR Web site. Its publications have been available over the Internet as page image presentations in portable document format, wherein each item has been linked to the appropriate bibliographic record in the catalog.
