The article reports on the decision of Sergeant 1st Class Hershel L. Mayfield, 37-year-old war veteran of the Alabama National Guard's 158th Maintenance Company. to extend for two years in the military service in the U.S. Mayfield says that his decision aims to inspire the next generation and influence them to do the same for the country. He started his career as an infantryman in the active-component Army and has been deployed in Vietnam in 1969, Kosovo in 1996 and in Mosul, Iraq.

The article focuses on the plans of Palestine to take unilateral declaration of independence using the case of Kosovo when the peace talks led by the U.S. failed. It says that secretary-general Mustafa Barghouti announces that the country will likely establishment an independent state from Israel and calls for all countries to support and recognize it. According to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, the parties can reach an agreement that ends the conflict.
