Cultural identity of peoples and individuals has been threatened by the continuous migrations, mainly from under-developed to developed countries. Therefore, it is an issue of current importance that has been approached from different fields of study. However, the study of this phenomenon from the linguistic perspective is insufficient, even when language is one of the vital pillars of identity. The use of language in the Cuban-American literature is a way of representing the cultural hybridism of Cuban immigrants in the United States. Hence, the objective of this research is to propose a cultural-linguistic model of analysis of bilingualism in the discourse of Cuban-American authors as a representation of cultural identity, illustrated through the analysis of bilingualism in Next Year in Cuba, a representative Cuban-American literary work. The hermeneutic-dialectic approach has been present throughout this research which has permitted the transit from observation, comprehension, explanation, and interpretation. Through this model it has been possible to demonstrate that bilingualism is a feature of linguistic identity that expresses the bicultural identity of immigrants of Cuban origin in the United States. Using mixed methodology, the authors examined facilitators to psychological thriving—or positive changes after adversity—in the context of ethnic discrimination among Latina/o adults. Several themes emerged from qualitative interviews (n = 10), including proving others wrong, ethnic identity, and community involvement. Quantitative analyses (n = 97) indicated that U.S. identity moderated the relationship between ethnic microaggressions and thriving such that high levels of U.S. identity were associated with lower thriving. Implications and future directions are discussed. In the twenty-first century's first decade, Pentecostal Christian congregations are now a significant cultural force in Haiti and its diaspora. Those who self-identify as Pannkotis (Pentecostal) comprise a striking variety--from independent "heavenly armies" to mainline congregations closely modeled after those in the United States. As Haitian Pentecostals face ongoing socioeconomic strife, they engage in exuberant praise and worship while deploying an arsenal of musical "weapons" to fight for survival, defend their theological turf, and articulate who they are and hope to become. Foregrounding the interplay of positionality and faith, I argue that embodied musical practice is, for two distinct Pentecostal groups, something of a two-edged sword: It slices through oppressive spiritual barriers to attack a common "satanic" enemy, but it also guards the social and theological walls separating them. This paradox of Pentecostal music making--its spiritually amalgamative but socially divisive potential--lies at the heart of my discussion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

U.S. Latino youth create drawings inside and outside of school that express bicultural identities and feature iconography that has migrated from Mesoamerican countries. This ethnography describes these drawings as a subaltern form of visual literacy, and finds that they afford knowledgeable viewers entrance into discourses about being young and Latino. These subaltern visual literacy practices transculturated and migrated with mestizos who integrated the iconography into their visual environments and injected their visual literacy practices into the social fabric of their communities in the United States. This study explores these social practices and situates them in the historical context of the contact zone of Mesoamerican pictographic and European alphabetic literacies beginning with the Conquest.
