The HEALthy Brain and Child Development (HBCD) Study, a multi-site prospective longitudinal cohort study, will examine human brain, cognitive, behavioral, social, and emotional development beginning prenatally and planned through early childhood. Study success depends on the engagement and inclusion of diverse populations of pregnant participants and their children across the United States, including those at high and low risk for prenatal substance use. The Communications, Engagement, and Dissemination (CED) Committee is responsible for the development and implementation of a strategy to promote awareness about the study, encourage participation, and engage HBCD families, community partners, and collaborators. Initial work involved developing versatile recruitment and awareness materials with a consistent and inclusive message that reduces stigma and negative bias towards marginalized populations, including people with substance use and other mental health conditions. These efforts were shaped by an integrated product development workflow and early engagement with HBCD partners to address challenges. Ongoing work includes the expansion of HBCD outreach through newsletters and social media platforms with an emphasis on protecting participant privacy. The human brain undergoes rapid development during the first years of life. Beginning in utero, a wide array of biological, social, and environmental factors can have lasting impacts on brain structure and function. To understand how prenatal and early life experiences alter neurodevelopmental trajectories and shape health outcomes, several NIH Institutes, Centers, and Offices collaborated to support and launch the HEALthy Brain and Child Development (HBCD) Study. The HBCD Study is a multi-site prospective longitudinal cohort study, that will examine human brain, cognitive, behavioral, social, and emotional development beginning prenatally and planned through early childhood. Influenced by the success of the ongoing Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development SM Study (ABCD Study®) and in partnership with the NIH Helping to End Addiction Long-term® Initiative, or NIH HEAL Initiative®, the HBCD Study aims to establish a diverse cohort of over 7000 pregnant participants to understand how early life experiences, including prenatal exposure to addictive substances and adverse social environments as well as their interactions with an individual's genes, can affect neurodevelopmental trajectories and outcomes. FDA's Menu Labeling Final Rule requires covered establishments provide calorie information on menus or menu boards, among other requirements. This study describes correlates of noticing and using menu calorie information in a nationally representative sample of U.S. adults before implementation of the Final Rule in May 2018. Data from the 2018 National Cancer Institute Health Information National Trends Survey was used to assess noticing menu calorie information, using menu calorie information to change menu ordering behavior, and knowledge of daily calorie needs. Regression analysis of weighted data tested associations between individual characteristics and noticing and using menu calorie information. Nearly half of adults (44%) reported noticing menu calorie information. Women, younger individuals, those who seek health information, individuals with a BMI ≥ 30, and those with higher education or higher income were more likely to report noticing menu calorie information. Among adults who reported noticing menu calorie information, three-quarters responded by ordering less (e.g., fewer calories), which equates to about one-third of the population. About 36% of women and 42% of men lacked calorie knowledge. Men with, versus without, calorie knowledge were twice as likely to report noticing menu calorie information (adjusted OR 2.23 95% CI 1.51, 3.29). Findings suggest behavioral response to menu calorie information varies and most individuals who notice the information respond by ordering less in ways that could reduce caloric intake. Future analyses could compare noticing and using menu calorie information before and after menu labeling implementation to assess the effect of policy on population behaviors., (Published by Elsevier Inc.)

Introduction: The advent of universal health care coverage in the United States and the use of electronic health records can make the medical record a disease surveillance tool. The objective of our study was to identify criteria that accurately categorize acute coronary and heart failure events by using electronic health record data exclusively so that the medical record can be used for surveillance without manual record review., Methods: We serially compared 3 computer algorithms to manual record review. The first 2 algorithms relied on ICD-9-CM (International Classification of Diseases, 9th Revision, Clinical Modification) codes, troponin levels, electrocardiogram (ECG) data, and echocardiograph data. The third algorithm relied on a detailed coding system, Intelligent Medical Objects, Inc., (IMO) interface terminology, troponin levels, and echocardiograph data., Results: Cohen's κ for the initial algorithm was 0.47 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.41-0.54). Cohen's κ was 0.61 (95% CI, 0.55-0.68) for the second algorithm. Cohen's κ for the third algorithm was 0.99 (95% CI, 0.98-1.00)., Conclusion: Electronic medical record data are sufficient to categorize coronary heart disease and heart failure events without manual record review. However, only moderate agreement with medical record review can be achieved when the classification is based on 4-digit ICD-9-CM codes because ICD-9-CM 410.9 includes myocardial infarction with elevation of the ST segment on ECG (STEMI) and myocardial infarction without elevation of the ST segment on ECG (nSTEMI). Nearly perfect agreement can be achieved using IMO interface terminology, a more detailed coding system that tracks to ICD9, ICD10 (International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision, Clinical Modification), and SnoMED-CT (Systematized Nomenclature of Medicine - Clinical Terms).

In 2006, the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP) charged the Task Force on Residency Equivalency to define the professional experience expected of a clinically mature practitioner that would meet or exceed the knowledge and skills of an accredited postgraduate year one residency-trained pharmacist. In this commentary, the Task Force discusses both the qualitative and quantitative components of documentation by means of a residency equivalency portfolio. The potential roles of academia, pharmacy professional organizations, and employers and the possible barriers to an equivalency process are addressed. This commentary lays the foundation for establishing a residency equivalency process that could promote the growth and development of existing and future residency programs and allow qualified practitioners to demonstrate their capabilities. The ACCP implores invested stakeholders to take an active part in this collaborative effort as the profession transitions toward residency training as a prerequisite for all pharmacists providing direct patient care by 2020.
