Objective: Recent years have witnessed an increase in articles describing factors influencing medical student recruitment in neurosurgery, such as undergraduate preparation, impact of research experience, and selection into residency programs. In this study, we provide a comprehensive review of the literature addressing the relationship of medical students within neurosurgery., Methods: A search of the literature was conducted on the PubMed/MEDLINE database to October 2018 to screen for studies on medical student interest and recruitment in neurosurgery. Articles were screened for eligibility and reviewed for inclusion and their findings critically discussed., Results: Sixty-nine articles were included. Most research on the relationship of medical students with neurosurgery was conducted in the United States and United Kingdom. Data analysis was categorized into 2 groups: educational and noneducational factors. Eight areas of interest were identified: baseline undergraduate education, early research involvement, attitude toward neuroscience, mentoring, existence of a gender gap, residency program requirements, availability of educational resources, and networking opportunities., Conclusions: Our study bridges the gap of fragmented knowledge on medical student involvement in neurosurgery with the aim of optimizing existing approaches. We suggest that medical institutions outside the United States and United Kingdom should implement university-based interest groups to stimulate student interest, with reinforced participation of faculty for leading educational initiatives and collaborative research. Objectives: Most research addressing needs and concerns of young patients with breast cancer (≤40 years) is retrospective. The HOHO European protocol is a prospective multicenter cohort study of young women with newly diagnosed breast cancer, about fertility, psychosocial and quality of life concerns. Here we report the baseline data and focus on predictors of fertility concerns., Materials and Methods: Patient surveys and medical record review were used. The baseline survey included sociodemographic, medical and treatment data as well as questions on fertility concerns and preservation strategies. Subscales from the CAncer Rehabilitation Evaluation System-Short Form (CARES-SF) were administered to measure specific quality of life aspects. Uni- and multivariable modeling were used to investigate predictors of greater fertility concern., Results: Among 297 eligible respondents, 67% discussed fertility issues before starting therapy, 64% were concerned about becoming infertile after treatment, and 15% decided not to follow prescribed therapies. Fifty-four percent of women wished future children before diagnosis; of these, 71% still desired biologic children afterwards. In multivariable analysis, not having children was the only patient characteristic significantly associated with fertility concerns at diagnosis. Twenty-seven percent used fertility preservation strategies. Women who received chemotherapy reported greater physical (p = 0.021) and sexual difficulties (p = 0.039) than women who did not. Women who were married or had a partner reported less psychosocial problems than single women (p = 0.039)., Conclusions: Young women with newly diagnosed breast cancer have several concerns, including, but not limited to, fertility. A wealth of information is currently known about the epidemiology, etiology, and evaluation of drug and alcohol use across the life span. Despite this corpus of knowledge, much has yet to be learned. Many factors conspire to slow the pace of future advances in the field of substance use including the need for long-term longitudinal studies of often hard-to-reach subjects who are reporting rare and episodic behaviors. One promising option that might help move the field forward is integrative data analysis (IDA). IDA is a principled set of methodologies and statistical techniques that allow for the fitting of statistical models to data that have been pooled across multiple, independent samples. IDA offers a myriad of potential advantages including increased power, greater coverage of rare behaviors, more rigorous psychometric assessment of theoretical constructs, accelerated developmental time period under study, and enhanced reproducibility. However, IDA is not without limitations and may not be useful in a given application for a variety of reasons. The goal of this article is to describe the advantages and limitations of IDA in the study of individual development over time, particularly as it relates to trajectories of substance use. An empirical example of the measurement of polysubstance use is presented and this article concludes with recommendations for practice.
