Following the 2004 election, exit polls and pundits suggested that moral values were a determining factor in voting for president. Subsequent analyses have suggested that this initial interpretation may have been overstated and that moral issues-such as gay marriage and abortion in particular-were less consequential for presidential voting than the economy, terrorism, and the Iraq war. Using data from the 2004 NES, I confirm these findings that moral issues were generally not consequential but I show that moral values not only mattered, they were among the most important predictors of presidential voting in 2004 save party identification. The results of this study confirm the initial interpretation that the 2004 presidential election hinged, in part, on moral values voting. ..PAT.-Unpublished Manuscript [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
