Simple Summary: Cotton leafroll dwarf virus (CLRDV) is capable of causing yield loss in cotton. Eight species of aphids have been reported to feed on cotton, but Aphis gossypii is the only known CLRDV vector in the United States (U.S.). Little is known about their distribution, abundance, and seasonal dynamics in the southern U.S. The epidemiological value of understanding this prompted a two-year study to monitor the populations of aphids that infest cotton fields throughout the southern U.S., where CLRDV has been reported. Aphis gossypii and Protaphis middletonii were the most abundant aphid species collected. Aphis craccivora, Macrosiphum euphorbiae, Myzus persicae, Rhopalosiphum rufiabdominale, and Smynthurodes betae were also detected in this study; however, their populations remained consistently low throughout the collection period. Results from this study presented novel information regarding the seasonal variation of the species and populations of aphids associated with cotton in the region. These seven have not been studied in cotton, but due to their potential epidemiological importance, an understanding of the intra- and inter-annual variations of these species is needed. In 2020 and 2021, aphids were monitored from North Carolina to Texas using pan traps around cotton fields. All of the species known to infest cotton, excluding A. fabae, were detected in this study. Protaphis middletonii and A. gossypii were the most abundant species identified. The five other species of aphids captured were consistently low throughout the study and, with the exception of R. rufiabdominale, were not detected at all locations. The identification of alternate hosts that can act as virus inoculum sources and vector reservoirs in the landscape is critical to understanding virus epidemics. Cotton leafroll dwarf virus (CLRDV) is a serious pathogen in cotton production and is transmitted by the cotton/melon aphid, Aphis gossypii, in a persistent, circulative, and non-propagative manner. CLRDV was first reported in the United States in Alabama in 2017, and thereafter in several cotton-producing states. CLRDV has since established itself in the southeastern United States. The role of alternate hosts in CLRDV establishment is not clear. Fourteen common plant species in the landscape, including crops, weeds, and ornamentals (cotton, hollyhock, marshmallow, country mallow, abutilon, arrowleaf sida, okra, hibiscus, squash, chickpea, evening primrose, henbit, Palmer amaranth, and prickly sida) were tested as potential alternate hosts of CLRDV along with an experimental host (Nicotiana benthamiana) via aphid-mediated transmission assays. CLRDV was detected following inoculation in hibiscus, okra, N. benthamiana, Palmer amaranth, and prickly sida by RT-PCR, but not in the others. CLRDV accumulation determined by RT-qPCR was the highest in N. benthamiana compared with cotton and other hosts. However, aphids feeding on CLRDV-infected prickly sida, hibiscus, and okra alone were able to acquire CLRDV and back-transmit it to non-infected cotton seedlings. Additionally, some of the alternate CLRDV hosts supported aphid development on par with cotton. However, in a few instances, aphid fitness was reduced when compared with cotton. Overall, this study demonstrated that plant hosts in the agricultural landscape can serve as CLRDV inoculum sources and as aphid reservoirs and could possibly play a role in the reoccurring epidemics of CLRDV in the southeastern United States. BACKGROUND Over the past two decades, neonicotinoid seed treatments have become the primary method to manage tobacco thrips, Frankliniella fusca Hinds, on seedling cotton. Because this insect is highly polyphagous and the window of insecticide exposure is short, neonicotinoid resistance was expected to pose a minimal risk. However, reports of higher than expected F. fusca seedling damage in seed-treated cotton fields throughout the Mid-South and Southeast US production regions suggested neonicotinoid resistance had developed. To document this change, F. fusca populations from 86 different locations in the eastern United States were assayed in 2014 and 2015 for imidacloprid and thiamethoxam resistance to determine the extent of the issue in the region. RESULTS Approximately 57 and 65% of the F. fusca populations surveyed had reduced imidacloprid and thiamethoxam sensitivity respectively. Survivorship in diagnostic bioassays was significantly different at both the state and regional scales. Multiple-dose bioassays conducted on 37 of the populations documented up to 55- and 39-fold resistance ratios for imidacloprid and thiamethoxam respectively. CONCLUSION Estimates of neonicotinoid resistance indicate an emerging issue for management of F. fusca in the eastern United States. Cotton, Gossypium hirsutum L., boils from 17 field locations in northeastern North Carolina and southeastern Virginia, having 20% or greater internal boll damage, were studied to determine the relationship between external feeding symptoms and internal damage caused by stink bug (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) feeding. In 2006 and 2007, two cohorts of 100 boils each were sampled at all field locations. The first cohort was removed as boils reached approximately quarter size in diameter (2.4 cm) External and internal symptoms of stink bug feeding were assessed and tabulated. Concurrent to when the first cohort was collected, a second cohort of quarter-size-diameter boils was identified, tagged, examined in situ for external feeding symptoms (sunken lesions), and harvested at the black seed coat stage. Harvested boils were assessed for internal damage and locks were categorized (undamaged, minor damage, or major damage), dried, and ginned. Lint samples from each damage category were submitted for high volume instrument and advanced fiber information system quality analyses. Significant, moderately strong Pearson correlation coefficients existed between number of external stink bug feeding lesions and internal damage. Pearson correlation of total external lesions with total internal damage was stronger than any correlation among the other single components compared. Predictability plots indicated a rapid increase in relationship strength when relating external stink bug lesions to internal damage as the number of external lesions increased, Approximately 90% predictability of internal damage was achieved with four (2006) or six (2007) external lesions per boll. The impact of natural enemies on cotton aphid, Aphis gossypii Clover (Hemiptera: Aphididae), populations in cotton, Gossypium hirsutum L., production systems in the southeastern United States was evaluated over 3 yr in irrigated commercial cotton fields. Fungal epizootics caused by the entomopathogen Neozygites fresenii (Nowakowski) Batko reduced aphid numbers to sub-threshold levels in 1999, 2000, and 2001 and occurred consistently in early to mid-July in all 3 yr. Scymnus spp. were the most abundant aphidophagous predators, although other coccinellid species and generalist predators such as spiders, fire ants, heteropterans, and neuropterans also were present. Studies using arthropod exclusion cages demonstrated little impact of predators orparasitoids on aphid populations before fungal epizootics. Arthropod natural enemies were most abundant after epizootics and may have suppressed aphid populations late in the season. Seed cotton yield, and lint quality were not affected by aphicide applications in any year of the study. Drought can substantially limit yield in cotton, and water loss in any crop is closely associated with plant growth, but studies addressing the effects of growth management on drought sensitivity are limited in cotton. We tested the hypothesis that aggressive plant growth management would decrease cotton sensitivity to drought during flowering and boll development. Cotton was grown at a field site near Tifton, GA during the 2021 and 2022 growing seasons. Treatments included mepiquat chloride (MC) strategies (aggressive and untreated) and two water availability treatments (well-watered and drought-stressed). At approximately 2 weeks after first flower, water was withheld from the drought-stressed treatment for a three-week period, and well-watered plots were kept irrigated using a regionally accepted water balance approach. Measurements throughout the season included heights, nodes, length of the fourth internode below the plant terminal, nodes above white flower (NAWF), and soil moisture. End-of-season measurements included lint yield, fiber quality, and yield component assessments. MC treatment significantly affected plant height, mainstem node number, 4th internode length, and cutout date. Soil moisture was significantly reduced during the drought stress period. Aggressive MC treated plots showed less drought-induced yield reduction than untreated in response to drought, but did not reach the same lint yield, boll density, or uniformity as well-watered, untreated plots. Aggressive MC treatment produced greater seed surface area, seed number boll-1, and boll mass. Aggressive MC management may prevent drought-induced yield reductions but penalize yield under well-watered conditions. Among the potential components driving yield, boll number per unit land area was the most important contributor. Our findings highlight the potential for aggressive MC management to mitigate drought risk, but future efforts should evaluate this possibility in a broader range of cultivars adapted for production in the southeastern United States and with the inclusion of a moderate MC treatment. • Aggressive mepiquat chloride treatment can mitigate drought risk but also penalize yield in a well-watered environment. • Aggressive mepiquat chloride treatment produced greater seed surface area, seed number boll-1, and boll mass. • Boll density was primarily associated with lint yield. • Only fiber uniformity and strength were impacted by aggressive mepiquat chloride treatment. Cotton leafroll dwarf virus (CLRDV) is an emerging virus in cotton production in Georgia and several other Southeastern states in the USA. To better understand the genetic diversity of the virus population, the near complete genome sequences of six isolates from Georgia and one from Alabama were determined. The isolates sequenced were 5,866 nucleotides with seven open reading frames (ORFs). The isolates from Georgia were >94% identical with other isolates from the USA and South America. In the silencing suppressor protein (P0), at amino acid position 72, the isolates from Georgia and Alabama had a valine (V), similar to resistant-breaking 'atypical' genotypes in South America, while the Texas isolate had isoleucine (I), similar to the more aggressive 'typical' genotypes of CLRDV. At position 120, arginine (R) is unique to Georgia and China isolates, but absent in Alabama, Texas and South American isolates. Ten potential recombinant events were detected in the isolates sequenced. Background: Thrips (order Thysanoptera) infestations of cotton seedlings result in plant injury, increasing the detrimental consequences of other challenges to production agriculture, such as abiotic stress or infestation by other pests. Using Frankliniella fusca as a thrips species of focus, we empirically developed a composite model of thrips phenology and cotton seedling susceptibility to predict site-specific infestation risk so that monitoring and other resources can be allocated efficiently, to optimize the timing of thrips control measures to maximize effectiveness, and to inform stakeholders about the dynamics of thrips infestation and cotton seedling injury at a time when thrips are evolving resistance to commonly-used pesticides., Results: A mixture distribution model of thrips infestation potential, fit to data describing F. fusca adult dispersal in time, proved best for predicting infestations of F. fusca on cotton seedlings. Thrips generations occurring each year as a function of weather are represented as a probability distribution. A model of cotton seedling growth was also developed to predict susceptibility as a function of weather. Combining these two models resulted in a model of seedling injury, which was validated and developed for implementation as a software tool., Conclusions: Experimental validation of the implemented model demonstrated the utility of its output in predicting infestation risk. Whereas, most cancer research data come from high-profile academic centers, little is known about the outcomes of cancer care in rural communities. We summarize the experience of building a multi-institution partnership to develop a cancer outcomes research infrastructure in Southwest Georgia (SWGA), a primarily rural 33-county area with over 700,000 residents. The partnership includes eight institutions: the Emory University in Atlanta, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Georgia Comprehensive Center Registry (the Registry), the Southwest Georgia Cancer Coalition (the Coalition), and the four community cancer centers located within the SWGA region. The practical application of the partnership model, its organizational structure, and lessons learned are presented using two specific examples: a study evaluating treatment decisions and quality of life among prostate cancer patients, and a study of treatment discontinuation among prostate, breast, lung, and colorectal cancer patients. Our partnership model allowed us to (1) use the Coalition as a link between Atlanta-based researchers and local community; (2) collaborate with the area cancer centers on day-to-day study activities; (3) involve the Registry personnel and resources to identify eligible cancer cases and to perform data collection; and (4) raise community awareness and sense of study ownership through media announcements organized by the Coalition. All of the above activities were performed in consultation with the funding institution (CDC) and its project directors who oversee several other studies addressing similar research questions throughout the country. Our partnership model may provide a useful framework for cancer outcomes research projects in rural communities.
