The present paper examines the current state of the U.S. automotive industry, comparing the dichotomous strategies and developmental trajectories of U.S. firms (Ford, GM, and Chrysler) and foreign transplants (e.g., Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Mazda, Subaru). First, we will examine change in the distribution of U.S. production and production facilities over time, demonstrating production growth among transplants, with brief mention of U.S. firms' expansion into China. Second, we describe the implications of such production shifts for employment in the assembly and parts sectors, and in high-value sectors such as engineering and research. Finally, we discuss labor contracts, with specific attention to unionization, wages, job responsibilities, and benefits offerings. We conclude with implications for the American automotive industry and a brief discussion of current corporate strategy. ..PAT.-Unpublished Manuscript [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
