Describing the distribution of aquatic habitats and the health of biological communities can be costly and time-consuming; therefore, simple, inexpensive methods to scale observations of aquatic biota to watersheds that lack data would be useful. In this study, we explored the potential of a simple "hydrogeomorphic" model to predict the effects of acid deposition on macroinvertebrate, fish, and diatom communities in 28 sub-watersheds of the 176-km² Neversink River basin in the Catskill Mountains of New York State. The empirical model was originally developed to predict stream-water acid neutralizing capacity (ANC) using the watershed slope and drainage density. Because ANC is known to be strongly related to aquatic biological communities in the Neversink, we speculated that the model might correlate well with biotic indicators of ANC response. The hydrogeomorphic model was strongly correlated to several measures of macroinvertebrate and fish community richness and density, but less strongly correlated to diatom acid tolerance. The model was also strongly correlated to biological communities in 18 sub-watersheds independent of the model development, with the linear correlation capturing the strongly acidic nature of small upland watersheds (< 1 km²). Overall, we demonstrated the applicability of geospatial data sets and a simple hydrogeomorphic model for estimating aquatic biological communities in areas with stream-water acidification, allowing estimates where no direct field observations are available. Similar modeling approaches have the potential to complement or refine expensive and timeconsuming measurements of aquatic biota populations and to aid in regional assessments of aquatic health. This study was a statistical evaluation of the prevalence of infiltration excess runoff (i.e., Hortonian flow) for undeveloped areas within New York City (NYC) watersheds. Identifying the hydrological processes generating runoff is central to developing watershed management strategies for protecting water quality. Fifteen-minute rainfall data from East Sidney, N.Y. (1971-2002) were used as maximum observed intensities. Maximum exceedance analyses were performed on a monthly basis to investigate seasonal rainfall intensity trends. Hortonian flow was assumed to occur whenever the rainfall intensity exceeded the soil permeability. Soil permeabilities were obtained from the U.S. Natural Resource Conservation Service soil survey. Results show that Hortonian flow is unlikely to occur anywhere for events smaller than the 3-year 15-min event. Only for the summer months, May-August, is Hortonian flow expected for 15-min intensities of <10-year magnitude. However, the summer results are overpredicted by this analysis because these months typically have the driest soil conditions and thus the highest infiltration capacity. The TOPMODEL framework was used to derive expressions that account for saturated and unsaturated flow through shallow soil on a hillslope. The resulting equations were the basis for a shallow-soil TOPMODEL (STOPMODEL). The common TOPMODEL theory implicitly assumes a water table below the entire watershed and this does not conceptually apply to systems hydrologically controlled by shallow interflow of perched groundwater. STOPMODEL provides an approach for extending TOPMODEL's conceptualization to apply to shallow, interflow-driven watersheds by using soil moisture deficit instead of water table depth as the state variable. Deriving STOPMODEL by using a hydraulic conductivity function that changes exponentially with soil moisture content results in equations that look very similar to those commonly associated with TOPMODEL. This alternative way of conceptualizing TOPMODEL makes the modelling approach available to researchers, planners, and engineers who work in areas where TOPMODEL was previously believed to be unsuited, such as the New York City Watershed in the Catskills region of New York State. Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in surface water influences the global carbon cycle, ecosystem productivity, and water quality in potable water supply systems. Few physically based watershed models can simulate carbon cycling and predict DOC in surface waters under the influence of natural and anthropogenic drivers. In this work we transform the SWAT-Carbon (C) model to simulate DOC from variable source runoff areas in a humid forested watershed in the northeastern United States. Remotely sensed data were used to parameterize and simulate forest growth and evapotranspiration. The calibrated model accurately simulated streamflow and DOC flux at six sites across the watershed compared to measured data. The DOC predictions across sites showed model sensitivity to soil properties, particularly soil depth and available water capacity. The spatial distribution of DOC export across the watershed followed the pattern of surface runoff from variable source areas. Model sensitivity of DOC flux showed greater sensitivity to changes in precipitation than temperature. The overall good performance of the model makes it a valuable tool for watershed-scale modeling of DOC to understand the influence of climate and watershed management towards developing mitigation strategies. Abstract: High suspended sediment loads and the resulting turbidity can impact the use of surface waters for water supply and other designated uses. Changes in fluvial sediment loads influence material fluxes, aquatic geochemistry, water quality, channel morphology, and aquatic habitats. Therefore, quantifying spatial and temporal patterns in sediment loads is important both for understanding and predicting soil erosion and sediment transport processes as well as watershed-scale management of sediment and associated pollutants. A case study from the 891km2 Cannonsville watershed, one of the major watersheds in the New York City water supply system is presented. The objective of this study was to apply Soil and Water Assessment Tool-Water Balance (SWAT-WB), a physically based semi-distributed model to identify suspended sediment generating source areas under current conditions and to simulate potential climate change impacts on soil erosion and suspended sediment yield in the study watershed for a set of future climate scenarios representative of the period 2081–2100. Future scenarios developed using nine global climate model (GCM) simulations indicate a sharp increase in the annual rates of soil erosion although a similar result in sediment yield at the watershed outlet was not evident. Future climate related changes in soil erosion and sediment yield appeared more significant in the winter due to a shift in the timing of snowmelt and also due to a decrease in the proportion of precipitation received as snow. Although an increase in future summer precipitation was predicted, soil erosion and sediment yield appeared to decrease owing to an increase in soil moisture deficit and a decrease in water yield due to increased evapotranspiration. Summary: This study uses an instrumented (trenched) 0.5ha hillslope in the southern tier of New York State, USA, to provide new data and insights on how variable source areas and associated flow pathways form and combine to connect rainfall with downstream water flows across a hillslope. Measurements of water fluxes in the trench, upslope water table dynamics, surface and bedrock topography, and isotopic and geochemical tracers have been combined for a four-dimensional (space–time) characterization of subsurface storm flow responses. During events with dry antecedent conditions infiltrating rainwater was found to percolate through a prevailing fragipan layer to deeper soil layers, with much (33–71%) of the total discharge of the hillslope originating from deeper water flow below the fragipan. During storm events with wet antecedent conditions and large rainfall amounts, shallow lateral flow of event and pre-event water above the fragipan occurred and was one magnitude greater than the deeper water flow contribution. Spatial surface and subsurface water quality observations indicate that water from a distance of up to 56m contributed runoff from the hillslope during storm events. In addition, mobilization of total dissolved phosphorus (TDP) with subsurface flow played a greater role than with overland or near-surface flow. During all events TDP loads were highest in the total discharge during peak flows (8–11.5kgha−1 d−1), except during the largest storm event, when TDP concentrations were highly diluted. These results have implications for strategies to protect streams and other downstream water recipients from waterborne nutrient and pollutant loading. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
