This article investigates the relationship between American political culture and grassroots environmentalism in the 1970s. To do so, it examines how the white working class residents of Love Canal, New York, claimed health and a healthy environment as rights of citizenship. To date, the Canal has remained a sore spot for environmental scholarship; this article demonstrates how the analytic difficulties posed by the Canal stem from the crosscurrents of American political culture in the late 1970s. Canal residents put their local experience into several larger frames of reference: the rights and responsibilities of citizenship, the plight of Cuban and Vietnamese refugees, and a culture of skepticism toward government and medical authority. Residents' use of these frameworks illustrates two broader points about American political culture in the late 1970s. First, the claim to health as a right rather than a privilege, articulated by health radicals throughout the 1960s, had by the late 1970s been decoupled from its origins in left-liberal struggles. Second, the crosscurrents of localism, nativism, racism, and anti-authoritarianism characteristic of the reactionary populism of urban working-class whites could, quite logically for their proponents, co-exist with rights-based claims to health and a healthy environment. Love Canal demands that we embed our narratives about the development of environmental politics--environmental justice in particular--within a broader story about deregulation, the rise of the New Right, and the political and economic marginalization of the working class in the United States. Simple Summary: The American Simmental Association has an ongoing project assessing carcass composition and quality. Typically, when animals for mating are selected on maternal traits, there is a concomitant reduction in carcass value as many maternal traits are antagonistic to carcass traits. Analysis of the current data showed the correlation between hot carcass weight and calving ease direct to be lower than previously reported. This shows that multi-trait selection reduced the problem that arose when selecting for carcass traits or maternal traits individually. USDA quality and yield grade are primary driving forces for carcass value in the United States. Carcass improvements can be achieved by making selection decisions based on the results of genetic evaluations in the form of expected progeny differences (EPD), real-time ultrasound imaging, and physical evaluation of candidate breeding animals. In an effort to advance their ability to accurately predict the breeding value of potential sires for carcass traits, the American Simmental Association launched the Carcass Merit Program as a means to collect progeny sire group carcass information. All records were extracted from the American Simmental Association database. Progeny data were organized by sire family and progeny performance phenotypes were constructed. Sire genotypes were filtered, and a multi-locus mixed linear model was used to perform an association analysis on the genotype data, while correcting for cryptic relatedness and pedigree structure. Three chromosomes were found to have genome-wide significance and this conservative approach identified putative QTL in those regions. Three hundred ninety-three novel regions were identified across all traits, as well as 290 novel positional candidate genes. Rhabdomyosarcoma is the most common soft-tissue sarcoma in children and adolescents and accounts for 3% of all pediatric tumors. Subtypes include alveolar, spindle cell, embryonal, mixed-type, pleomorphic, and rhabdomyosarcoma with ganglionic differentiation. The National Cancer Institute's Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database was queried for patients diagnosed with any type of rhabdomyosarcoma between 1973 and 2014. Patient demographics, tumor characteristics, and incidence were studied with χ 2 analysis. Survival was modeled with Kaplan-Meier survival curves and Cox proportional hazards models were used to assess the effect of age and gender on survival. Pleomorphic subtype had higher grade and larger sized tumors compared to other subtypes (p < 0.05). Pleomorphic and alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma had the worst overall survival with a 26.6% and 28.9% 5-year survival, respectively. Embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma had the highest 5-year survival rate (73.9%). Tumor size was negatively correlated with survival months, indicating patients with larger tumors had shorter survival times (p < 0.05). Presence of higher-grade tumors and metastatic disease at presentation were negatively correlated with survival months (p < 0.05). No significant differences in the survival were found between gender or race between all of the subtypes (p > 0.05). This study highlights key differences in the demographic and survival rates of the different types of rhabdomyosarcoma that can be used for more tailored patient counseling. We also demonstrate that large, population-level databases provide sufficient data that can be used in the analysis of rare tumors. © 2019 Orthopaedic Research Society. Background: Snow blowers represent a highly preventable and increasingly common mechanism of hand injury. This study examines current safety features and their impact on decreasing the incidence of snow blower-related injuries., Methods: The National Electronic Injury Surveillance System was queried to look for injuries related to the use of snow throwers or blowers between 2001 and 2016. From all of the injuries related to snow blowers, we collected information on identifying characteristics, location of injury, and type of injury (i.e., avulsion). Chi-squared tests were used for categorical variable comparisons, and Student t tests were used for continuous variable comparisons. Data analysis was performed using SAS statistical software, version 9.3 (SAS Institute, Inc., Cary, NC). The Consumer Product Safety Commission's provided SAS algorithm was used to calculate all national injury estimates and variances. Statistical significance was determined based on P < 0.05., Results: Within the study period, there were 3,550 reported injuries. The extrapolated national incidence was 92,799, with an average annual incidence of 5,800 or 1.9 injuries per 100,000 US population per year. The most commonly injured body part was the finger followed by the hand. Most common types of injuries were fractures, lacerations, and amputations., Conclusions: The incidence of snow blower injuries increased from 2001 to 2016. Unlike with other power tools, Consumer Product Safety Commission-mandated guidelines for safer operation and improvements in equipment have not been successful in producing a decrease in the incidence of snow blower injuries to the upper extremity. Based on this, further equipment modifications are necessary and should be aimed at preventing operators from placing their hand into the exit chute while the machine is still running. Physicians should take an active role in their practice as well as in their professional societies to educate and counsel patients to prevent further injury.
