The fungus Colletotrichum orbiculare causes watermelon anthracnose and is an important pathogen of watermelon in the United States, causing a significant impact on yield and quality of the produce. The application of fungicides as preventative and post-occurrence control measures is currently being deployed by growers. Further study of the genetic and molecular basis of anthracnose resistance will help in guiding future watermelon breeding strategies. Several conserved virulence factors (effectors) in C. orbiculare have been reported to interact with the host, at times impairing the host immune machinery. A single dominant gene conferring race 1 anthracnose resistance was reported independently on two watermelon germplasm. The recent advances in genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics could facilitate a better understanding of the interaction between C. orbiculare effectors and host resistance genes in the already sequenced watermelon genome. In this review, we encompass and discuss (i) the history of watermelon anthracnose, taxonomy, morphology, and diversity in races of C. orbiculare; (ii) the epidemiology of the anthracnose disease and host resistance; (iii) the genetics behind the pathogenesis; and (iv) the current advances in breeding and molecular efforts to elucidate anthracnose resistance. In this article I argue that the subject-object distinction, operative in Continental Europe during the late-1700s and early-1800s, led to the religion-secular distinction in higher education in the United States. Many scholars believe the origins of the shifting nature of the religion-secular distinction resided with some form of influence that students from the United States encountered while they pursued advanced academic work in Germany. These scholars studied this influence at an institutional or organizational level. An intellectual approach to history would assess the metaphysical currents of idealism that proved to be the primary influence that students from the United States encountered during their time in Germany. While idealism would never fully take hold in the United States, it gave shape and direction to the emerging movement of pragmatism. As a result, the separation of subject and object, under the guise of pragmatism, is reified in the religion-secular distinction in the academy in the United States. Once religion becomes the object of a subject, the subject's sense of self-dependence forces the religion-secular distinction. However, the religion-secular distinction proves to be a transitory relationship. Inevitably, the underlying issue proves to be that only the secular can serve as the sustainable object of its subject.

The dialectical tension between the sacred and the secular has fostered fascinating historical discussions concerning the Catholic university in the United States. Scholars such as James Turner and Philip Gleason have offered a host of narratives that provide a context for other scholars seeking to philosophically define the aspirations that will shape the future of the Catholic university. Mark Roche's The Intellectual Appeal of Catholicism and The Idea of a Catholic University is an insightful example of such an effort. While the future of the Catholic university is invariably strengthened by these efforts, one cannot help but wonder how such aspirations might change if assumptions concerning the relationship shared by the sacred and the secular were to be challenged. For example, scholars such as Timothy Fitzgerald question whether the ability of the secular to forge its own identity apart from the sacred is not only at the heart of modernity but also at the heart of the dilemma facing Catholic colleges and universities. Perhaps time will tell whether the secular will subsume the sacred or whether the sacred will once again establish an identity beyond the dialectical tension it currently shares with the secular. Invariably, the future aspirations of Catholic colleges and universities in the United States, and potentially even Catholic colleges and universities in other countries, hang in the balance.

This article explores the significance that environments play in terms of the learning process. In the United States, the legacy of John Dewey's intellectual efforts left a theoretical understanding that views the architectural composition of learning environments as instrumental mediums which house the educational process. This understanding of learning environments is precipitated by a separation of human agents as subjects and their environments as objects. By contrast, Martin Heidegger's theory of ontology, and its reconfiguration of the subject and object relationship, lends itself to an understanding of the architectural composition of learning environments as dwellings.

To evaluate the relationship between infant age of egg introduction and malnutrition‐related growth outcomes in the United States, we analysed secondary data of 1716 mother–child dyads in the Infant Feeding Practices Study II and its Year 6 Follow‐Up Study. Malnutrition‐related growth outcomes included body mass index z‐score (BMIZ), obesity (weight‐for‐height z‐score [WHZ] ≥3 or BMIZ ≥ 2), WHZ, wasting (WHZ < −2), height‐for‐age z‐score (HAZ), and stunting (HAZ < –2). Infant age at egg introduction was analysed as a continuous variable. We used generalised estimating equations to estimate the mean difference in continuous outcomes and relative risk [RR]) for binary outcomes, adjusting for related maternal and child confounders. We also explored interactions with child sex, maternal race/ethnicity, maternal educational level, ever breastfeeding, and formula feeding. In the total sample, a later infant age at egg introduction was associated with a lower mean difference in HAZ (confounder‐adjusted mean difference = −0.08, 95% confidence interval [CI]: −0.12 to −0.03 per month) and a higher risk of stunting (confounder‐adjusted RR = 1.17, 95% CI: 1.03–1.33 per month) at 6 years. The associations between infant age at egg introduction and 12‐month growth outcomes differed by child sex. Among females but not among males, later introduction of eggs was associated with a lower mean WHZ (−0.06 [−0.12 to 0.00] per month) at 12 months. Later egg introduction during infancy was associated with a lower mean HAZ and a higher risk of stunting in 6‐year‐old children. Besides this, it was associated with a lower WHZ among females at 12 months. Indigenous students are severely underrepresented in higher education, and in STEM disciplines in particular. There is a lack of research critiquing the hegemonic culture of STEM programs in the United States that may present challenges to students pursuing these degrees from Indigenous communities. Using Tribal Critical Race Theory and Native Student Identity Development Theory, I examine the ways in which STEM programs throughout the United States harms and excludes Indigenous students, and seek to uncover ways that we can build Engineering departments which are more inclusive of varying worldviews, with a particular emphasis on Indigenous epistemologies. Specifically, I offer Place-Based education as a particular liberatory praxis in education which is conducive to Indigenous paradigms and has transformative potential within STEM disciplines. The value of utilizing a multigene pharmacogenetic panel to tailor pharmacotherapy is contingent on the prevalence of prescribed medications with an actionable pharmacogenetic association. The Clinical Pharmacogenetics Implementation Consortium (CPIC) has categorized over 35 gene‐drug pairs as "level A," for which there is sufficiently strong evidence to recommend that genetic information be used to guide drug prescribing. The opportunity to use genetic information to tailor pharmacotherapy among adult patients was determined by elucidating the exposure to CPIC level A drugs among 11 Implementing Genomics In Practice Network (IGNITE)‐affiliated health systems across the US. Inpatient and/or outpatient electronic‐prescribing data were collected between January 1, 2011 and December 31, 2016 for patients ≥ 18 years of age who had at least one medical encounter that was eligible for drug prescribing in a calendar year. A median of ~ 7.2 million adult patients was available for assessment of drug prescribing per year. From 2011 to 2016, the annual estimated prevalence of exposure to at least one CPIC level A drug prescribed to unique patients ranged between 15,719 (95% confidence interval (CI): 15,658–15,781) in 2011 to 17,335 (CI: 17,283–17,386) in 2016 per 100,000 patients. The estimated annual exposure to at least 2 drugs was above 7,200 per 100,000 patients in most years of the study, reaching an apex of 7,660 (CI: 7,632–7,687) per 100,000 patients in 2014. An estimated 4,748 per 100,000 prescribing events were potentially eligible for a genotype‐guided intervention. Results from this study show that a significant portion of adults treated at medical institutions across the United States is exposed to medications for which genetic information, if available, should be used to guide prescribing. A central theme for conservation is understanding how animals differentially use, and are affected by change in, the landscapes they inhabit. However, it has been challenging to develop conservation schemes for habitat‐specific behaviors.Here we use behavioral change point analysis to identify behavioral states of golden eagles (Aquilachrysaetos) in the Sonoran and Mojave Deserts of the southwestern United States, and we identify, for each behavioral state, conservation‐relevant habitat associations.We modeled behavior using 186,859 GPS points from 48 eagles and identified 2,851 distinct segments comprising four behavioral states. Altitude above ground level (AGL) best differentiated behavioral states, with two clusters of short‐distance movement behaviors characterized by low AGL (state 1 AGL = 14 m (median); state 2 AGL = 11 m) and two associated with longer‐distance movement behaviors and characterized by higher AGL (state 3 AGL = 108 m; state 4 AGL = 450 m).Behaviors such as perching and low‐altitude hunting were associated with short‐distance movements in updraft‐poor environments, at higher elevations, and over steeper and more north‐facing terrain. In contrast, medium‐distance movements such as hunting and transiting were over gentle and south‐facing slopes. Long‐distance transiting occurred over the desert habitats that generate the best updraft.This information can guide management of this species, and our approach provides a template for behavior‐specific habitat associations for other species of management concern. In recent years, colleges and universities in the United States have considered allowing concealed firearms on their campuses. Yet, substantive research on why a minority of students' desire to arm themselves is scarce. Addressing this gap in the literature, this study examines 30 interviews with chapter presidents of a national student gun rights organization. Using racialized narratives, participants express intense feelings of vulnerability on campus and in the larger society. Extending Feagin's theory of systemic racism to gun politics, I argue respondents' belief that they must be armed to co-exist with people of color reproduces racial inequality and poses a potential threat to students, faculty, and staff of color. Background Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is a rapidly emerging virus causing the ongoing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic with no known effective prophylaxis. We investigated whether hydroxychloroquine could prevent SARS-CoV-2 in healthcare workers at high risk of exposure. Methods We conducted a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial of healthcare workers with ongoing exposure to persons with SARS-CoV-2, including those working in emergency departments, intensive care units, COVID-19 hospital wards, and first responders. Participants across the United States and in the Canadian province of Manitoba were randomized to hydroxychloroquine loading dose then 400 mg once or twice weekly for 12 weeks. The primary endpoint was confirmed or probable COVID-19–compatible illness. We measured hydroxychloroquine whole-blood concentrations. Results We enrolled 1483 healthcare workers, of whom 79% reported performing aerosol-generating procedures. The incidence of COVID-19 (laboratory-confirmed or symptomatic compatible illness) was 0.27 events/person-year with once-weekly and 0.28 events/person-year with twice-weekly hydroxychloroquine compared with 0.38 events/person-year with placebo. For once-weekly hydroxychloroquine prophylaxis, the hazard ratio was.72 (95% CI,.44–1.16; P =.18) and for twice-weekly was.74 (95% CI,.46–1.19; P =.22) compared with placebo. Median hydroxychloroquine concentrations in whole blood were 98 ng/mL (IQR, 82–120) with once-weekly and 200 ng/mL (IQR, 159–258) with twice-weekly dosing. Hydroxychloroquine concentrations did not differ between participants who developed COVID-19–compatible illness (154 ng/mL) versus participants without COVID-19 (133 ng/mL; P =.08). Conclusions Pre-exposure prophylaxis with hydroxychloroquine once or twice weekly did not significantly reduce laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 or COVID-19–compatible illness among healthcare workers. Introduction: Within the Military Health System (MHS), facilities have struggled to meet minimum recommended volume thresholds for certain procedures. Understanding variations in complication rates and cost can help policymakers tailor policy to target improvement. Our objective was to quantify the variation in bariatric surgery complication rates and costs across a sample of military hospitals.Materials and Methods: We study a retrospective cohort of 38 military surgeons practicing in 21 military treatment facilities from 2007 to 2014 who performed 1,277 bariatric surgeries. Data from the Centralized Credentials and Quality Assurance System, which provides education and training characteristics of physicians, were linked to patient encounter data from the MHS Data Repository. Physicians were included if they performed at least five bariatric surgeries over the study period. Patients were included if they had a diagnosis of obesity (body mass index > 30) and underwent a bariatric weight loss surgery. We calculated and summarized inpatient costs and complication rates across both surgeons and facilities using multivariable mixed-effects linear or logistic models. We used these models to calculate adjusted complication rates and average costs across both providers and hospitals to characterize variation in bariatric outcomes within the MHS. This study was considered exempt by the Uniformed Services University Institutional Review Board.Results: We find evidence of large variations in both complication rates and costs per admission. Overall, we found a 15.5% complication rate across the sample. When comparing averages across facilities, we find large variation in complications (49.4% coefficient of variation [CV]) and procedure costs (25.9% CV). Controlling for patient comorbidities, BMI, and year attenuates much of the variation (12.6% CV complications, 4.4% CV cost), but cannot completely explain differences across facilities. Our model suggests that complications cost 32% more than complication-free surgeries on average suggesting that quality improvement efforts could potentially yield large savings.Conclusions: We find large variations in complication rates even after controlling for patient health. Furthermore, surgical complications are a significant determinant of cost. Policymakers should target efforts to improve surgical quality across facilities and physicians. Real-world evidence (RWE) provides a potential rich source of additional information to the body of data available from randomized clinical trials (RCTs), but there is a need to understand the strengths and limitations of RWE before it can be applied to clinical practice. To gain insight into current thinking in clinical decision making and utility of different data sources, a representative sampling of US cardiologists selected from the current, active Fellows of the American College of Cardiology (ACC) were surveyed to evaluate their perceptions of findings from RCTs and RWE studies and their application in clinical practice. The survey was conducted online via the ACC web portal between 12 July and 11 August 2017. Of the 548 active ACC Fellows invited as panel members, 173 completed the survey (32% response), most of whom were board certified in general cardiology (n = 119, 69%) or interventional cardiology (n = 40, 23%). The survey results indicated a wide range of familiarity with and utilization of RWE amongst cardiologists. Most cardiologists were familiar with RWE and considered RWE in clinical practice at least some of the time. However, a significant minority of survey respondents had rarely or never applied RWE learnings in their clinical practice, and many did not feel confident in the results of RWE other than registry data. These survey findings suggest that additional education on how to assess and interpret RWE could help physicians to integrate data and learnings from RCTs and RWE to best guide clinical decision making. Purpose: The use of patient-reported outcome (PRO) measures in clinical practice is increasing. Following the creation of a 'User's Guide to Implementing PRO Assessment in Clinical Practice' by the International Society for Quality of Life Research (ISOQOL), volunteers from ISOQOL sought to create a Companion Guide to assist health care providers with the scientific and practical considerations involved in implementing and using PRO measures in clinical care by using information from real-world case studies. This paper summarizes the key issues presented in the Companion Guide.Methods: Ten respondents, who were members of the ISOQOL's CP-SIG and worked in various clinical areas, participated in a survey or telephone interview. Participants were from Canada (n = 2), Denmark (n = 1), England (n = 2), Holland (n = 1), and the United States (n = 4).Results: Based on the information provided by respondents, a Companion Guide was produced, organized according to the nine questions presented in the User's Guide. An additional section for key take-home messages was also provided. This guide provides examples of issues and considerations related to the implementation of PRO measures in clinical practice.Conclusions: Respondents provided insight into their experiences and emphasized that PRO initiatives were likely to be more successful if there is purposeful, designed integration into clinical practice, meaningful substantive engagement with all stakeholders and access to necessary organizational resources. The ability to leverage existing technology as well as realistic and stakeholder consensus-driven expectations for planning and timing were also key to the successful implementation of PRO measures. State vocational rehabilitation (VR) agencies are well positioned to assist youth aged 16 to 24 years with disabilities who are transitioning from school to work. Using Rehabilitation Services Administration (RSA)-911 records matched to Social Security Administration (SSA) administrative records, this article adds to the knowledge about state VR agency provision of services to youth with disabilities and differences in outcomes based on SSA benefit receipt status. Although agencies' statistics varied widely, almost one in six SSA beneficiaries who sought VR services had at least 1 month of benefit suspension due to work within 48 months of their VR applications, and about one in 10 VR applicants without SSA benefits at the time of their VR application received SSA benefits within 48 months. SSA beneficiaries received services from VR agencies at the same level as non-SSA beneficiaries, but the levels at which they were employed when they closed from services were lower. The results have two main policy implications. First, the level of resources to which agencies have access may be important in influencing the outcomes we measured. Second, agency differences in the proportion of SSA beneficiaries who eventually had benefit suspension due to work point to the potential for additional gains by agencies in this area. Introduction: Recent implementation of the Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH) in military primary care has gained significant traction and attention from leadership and policy makers. The study objective was to measure the rate of change in appointment availability before and after primary care clinics were certified as a medical home. Access to care is one core tenet of the medical home and appointment availability is an important indicator of access.Materials and Methods: This was a retrospective, longitudinal observational study involving 21 U.S. Navy primary care clinics from 2011 to 2014. Appointment availability, as measured by third next available appointment, was constructed for 21 primary care clinics over a 29-month time period (14 months precertification, certification month, 14 months postcertification). A mixed-effects model with linear splines was applied where third next available appointment was the dependent variable. Main interest independent variables include time (precertification and postcertification). Remaining independent variables include categories pertaining to clinic characteristics, ancillary services, and nonemergent primary care treatable emergency department visits.Results: Appointment availability improved slightly postcertification. Although there were statistically significant differences in appointment availability pre- and postcertification, the differences were so small that patients may not actually experience noticeable improvements.Conclusion: Although slight improvements in appointment availability following medical home certification exist, adoption of the medical home model in the military setting may not have all the potential outcomes expected on the basis of prior findings in civilian settings. This study demonstrated that improvements in appointment availability following medical home certification exist, but are quite small. Patients, as a result, are unlikely to notice any improvements. Additional research should test other expected benefits of PCMH in military settings. At that point, military policy makers can decide which aspects of PCMH practices merit sustaining. Background: We sought to determine the incidence of and risk factors for late-onset atrial fibrillation (LOAF) in patients with preserved ejection fractions undergoing mitral valve repairMethods: We included patients undergoing isolated mitral valve repair (MVR) for degenerative disease between 1997-2014 at our institution with EF ≥60%. Patients who had AF preoperatively were excluded from the final analysis. Our primary outcome, LOAF, was defined as AF occurring after discharge following MVR (≥9 days).Results: 223 patients were included in the study with a mean follow-up of 4.8 ± 4.6 years. A total of 25 patients developed LOAF, and freedom from LOAF was 93.9% at one year, and 87.3% at five years. Patients developing LOAF were of similar mean age (58 vs. 63 years in controls, p = 0.08) and had similar preoperative comorbidities, but did show a trend toward larger left atrial diameter (5.1 vs. 4.7 cm, p = 0.11). After risk adjustment with Cox regression analysis, only increasing left atrial size was associated with LOAF (HR 1.63, p = 0.04). On follow-up, 29 patients (10.8%) developed moderate or greater mitral regurgitation at a mean of 2.2 years. Using a mixed-effects model, we were unable to detect an association between recurrent mitral regurgitation following MVR and LOAF (OR 1.36, p = 0.42).Conclusions: LOAF occurs in about 13% of preserved ejection fraction patients undergoing MVR by five years. Increasing left atrial diameter is an independent predictor of LOAF. Recovery from the Great Depression began in March 1933, simultaneous to Franklin Roosevelt's inauguration. However, the pace of that recovery between that date and the Second World War was extremely uneven with some dramatic starts and stops. Between March and July 1933, manufacturing production rose 78%, production of durable goods was up 199%, total industrial production rose 57%, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 71%. Then the economy contracted sharply again beginning in August 1933–the July 1933 level of industrial production was not reached again until August 1935. This paper addresses two questions. An essay is presented which addresses Virginia's capital punishment (CP) laws, convicted criminal Joseph Michael "Joe" Giarratano, and the history of the U.S. Supreme Court. The 1980 Virginia Supreme Court double homicide case Commonwealth of Virginia v. Joseph Michael Giarratano is examined, along with Giarratano’s mental illness and a judge's decision to reduce Giarratano’s sentence to life in prison and remove him from death row. A factual innocence claim is assessed.

Despite empirical progress in documenting and classifying various interrogation techniques, very little is known about how police are trained in interrogation methods, how frequently they use various techniques, and whether they employ techniques differentially with adult versus juvenile suspects. This study reports the nature and extent of formal (e.g., Reid Technique. PEACE, HUMINT) and informal interrogation training as well as self-reported technique usage in a diverse national sample {N = 340) of experienced American police officers. Officers were trained in a variety of different techniques ranging from comparatively benign pre-interrogation strategies (e.g.. building rapport, observing body language or speech patterns) to more psychologically coercive techniques (e.g., blaming the victim, discouraging denials). Over half the sample reported being trained to use psychologically coercive techniques with both adults and juveniles. The majority (91%) receive informal, "on the job" interrogation training. Technique usage patterns indicate a spectrum of psychological intensity where information-gathering approaches were used most frequently and high-pressure tactics less frequently. Reid-trained officers (56%) were significantly more likely than officers without Reid training to use pre-interrogation and manipulation techniques. Across all analyses and techniques, usage patterns were identical for adult and juvenile suspects, suggesting that police interrogate youth in the same manner as adults. Overall, results suggest that training in specific interrogation methods is strongly associated with usage. Findings underscore the need for more law enforcement interrogation training in general, especially with juvenile suspects, and highlight the value of training as an avenue for reducing interrogation-induced miscarriages of justice. Genes for watermelon [Citrullus lanatus (Thunb.) Matsumura & Nakai] fruit traits have been identified since the 1930s. We conducted a study of fruit traits including fruit stripe width, stripe color, rind color, fruit shape, and blossom end shape (concave vs. convex). Ten watermelon cultivars (inbred lines) were used as parents. Several new genes or alleles were discovered. A series of alleles at the g locus is proposed to explain the inheritance of fruit rind pattern: G (medium or dark solid green), gW (wide stripe), gM (medium stripe), gN (narrow stripe), and g (solid light green or gray). The dominance series is G > gW > gM > gN > g. Another series of alleles at the ob locus is proposed for the fruit shape: allele ObE for elongate fruit, which is the most dominant; allele ObR (not the same as the o gene for round) for the round fruit; and allele ob for oblong fruit, which is the most recessive. Gene csm is proposed for the clear stripe margin in the cultivar Red-N-Sweet and is recessive to the blurred stripe margin (Csm) in 'Crimson Sweet', 'Allsweet', and 'Tendersweet Orange Flesh'. Critical loads (CLs) and target loads (TLs) of atmospheric deposition of sulfur (S) and nitrogen (N) specify the thresholds of air pollution above which damage to ecosystems is expected to occur and are used to inform environmental regulation and natural resource management. Model estimates of CL and TL can vary for a given location, and these differences can be important for characterization of ecosystem effects from elevated S and N deposition. Moreover, TLs are used to evaluate associated timeframes of ecosystem recovery. We compared published CLs and TLs based on soil acidity criteria derived from steady-state versus dynamic models for terrestrial ecosystems. We examined the magnitude of differences in the CL/TL results from the two types of models for the same regions in the Eastern U.S. Results showed that CLs/TLs from dynamic models (or from steady state modeling using soil base cation weathering estimates from dynamic models) generally produce a broader range of values of acid-sensitivity, including lower CLs/TLs, as compared with a steady-state approach. Applications of dynamic biogeochemical models capable of developing CLs/TLs are relatively data intensive and typically limited to locations where measured soil and soil solution (or nearby stream water) chemistry are available for model parameterization, calibration, and testing. We recommend that CLs/TLs derived from dynamic models be used, where data permit, as they are likely more accurate and allow for evaluation of time-dependent phenomena and period needed for recovery. However, CLs derived from steady-state models remain a useful tool for understanding broad spatial patterns in soil acid-sensitivity throughout the U.S. Future work should focus on the development of more reliable model input parameters, particularly soil base cation weathering, and the extent to which CLs and TLs at a given location may vary and be altered with anticipated future climate change. The latest U.S. economic recession, commonly referred to as the Great Recession, has had a far-reaching impact, but its effects may be disproportionately experienced by working-age people with disabilities, given their already tenuous attachment to the labor force. We used data from the Current Population Survey both to describe the experiences of working-age people with disabilities during 2006–2012 (a period beginning before and ending after the Great Recession) and to compare the experiences of this population with those of working-age people without disabilities. We found few significant differences in the characteristics of people with disabilities before and after the Great Recession. The employment rate of people with disabilities was low both before and after the recession, though the decline in employment among people with disabilities was somewhat greater than for people without disabilities. The employment declines observed during this period for people with disabilities reflect a long-term downward trend that has persisted for decades, raising concerns that people with disabilities are permanently exiting the labor force. Job loss after the recession was particularly concentrated among people with disabilities in blue-collar and goods-producing jobs. People with and without disabilities experienced similar increases in poverty. Ongoing surveillance of the characteristics and employment of people with disabilities is needed to identify trends and develop policies to promote their independence and economic security. The article examines the challenges in balancing the use of force for self-defense and mission accomplishment by forces called upon to intervene in a civil conflict and how rules of engagement are used to address those challenges. It provides an overview of rules of engagement from a U.S. perspective, describes the purpose, development and uses of rules of engagement by U.S. military forces. It also examines the U.S. interventions in Lebanon in 1982-1983 and Somalia from 1992-1994.

Markets during the New Deal operated under a number of different institutional regimes, which were marked by executive orders, the passage of various pieces of legislation, and Supreme Court rulings on their constitutionality. Specifically, we break the New Deal period into the following six regimes: the Hundred Days, the President's Reemployment Agreement, the National Recovery Administration Codes of Fair Competition, the Schechter era, the National Labor Relations Act, and the Fair Labor Standards Act. Under these various regimes industrial markets were subject to different regulations relating to hourly wage rates, hours of work, the nature of competition, and unionization. Vector Autoregressive (VAR) regressions are run using a monthly panel of employment, weekly hours worked, wage rates, prices, and output for 11 major industries. We find that key policy and legal changes were associated with large and statistically significant movements in economic variables. Furthermore, changes in institutional regimes impacted different types of industries unevenly. For example, low-wage industries saw the largest increases in wages, and drops in output, after the mandated wage increases in 1933. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Interdisciplinary field study courses at 2-year colleges can provide an opportunity to enhance student learning. We present here an 11-day interdisciplinary field-study course designed for nonscience majors at a 2-year college. Using a theoretical learning framework that emphasizes cognitive and metacognitive gains, the field study curriculum is designed to incorporate both geology and biology topics illustrating the cross-discipline nature of science education. The course allows students to travel to classic geologic locales that provide a means of science immersion in a more active learning and inquirybased atmosphere. Students are encouraged to ask questions about nature, formulate hypotheses for answering those questions, and evaluate conclusions. Additionally, the course provides an opportunity for students to refine observation and inquiry skills beyond a set of laboratory exercises and classroom lectures. One of the biggest challenges when conducting a national-scale assessment of lakes, such as the 2007 US National Lake Assessment (NLA), is finding enough reference lakes to set appropriate expectations for the assessed sites. In the NLA, a random design was used to select lakes for sampling to make unbiased estimates of regional condition. However, such an approach was unlikely to yield enough minimally impacted lakes to use as reference sites, especially in disturbed regions. We developed a 3-stage process to select candidate reference lakes to augment the NLA probability sample in the northeastern USA (Northeast). Screening included a water-chemistry database filter, landuse evaluation, and analysis of aerial photographs. In the Northeast, we assembled a database of 2109 lakes .4 ha in surface area, of which 369 passed the water-chemistry screen. Of these, 220 failed the watershed landuse screen and 60 failed the aerial photograph screen, leaving a set of 89 optimal candidate reference lakes. Twenty of these lakes were sampled as potential reference lakes in the NLA. Based on a wide variety of indicators, NLA field measurements indicated that almost all (85-100%) of the chosen candidate reference lakes had leastdisturbed water chemistry, although somewhat fewer had least disturbed physical habitat (74-79%) and biology (68-78%). Nevertheless, our 3-stage screening process was an efficient method for identification of good candidates for reference-lake sampling. The reference-lake selection process used in our study can be done in the office and relatively inexpensively. As such, it is very useful for large-scale regional or national studies encompassing areas too large to census. Genetic diversity within species provides the raw material for adaptation and evolution. Just as regions of high species diversity are conservation targets, identifying regions containing high genetic diversity and divergence within and among populations may be important to protect future evolutionary potential. When multiple co-distributed species show spatial overlap in high genetic diversity and divergence, these regions can be considered evolutionary hotspots. We mapped spatial population genetic structure for 17 animal species across the Mojave Desert, USA. We analyzed these in concurrence and located 10 regions of high genetic diversity, divergence or both among species. These were mainly concentrated along the western and southern boundaries where ecotones between mountain, grassland and desert habitat are prevalent, and along the Colorado River. We evaluated the extent to which these hotspots overlapped protected lands and utility-scale renewable energy development projects of the Bureau of Land Management. While 30-40% of the total hotspot area was categorized as protected, between 3-7% overlapped with proposed renewable energy project footprints, and up to 17% overlapped with project footprints combined with transmission corridors. Overlap of evolutionary hotspots with renewable energy development mainly occurred in 6 of the 10 identified hotspots. Resulting GIS-based maps can be incorporated into ongoing landscape planning efforts and highlight specific regions where further investigation of impacts to population persistence and genetic connectivity may be warranted. Watermelon [Citrullus lanatus (Thunb.) Matsum. & Nakai] production in the United States has, in the past few years, incurred significant losses to races 1W and 2WU.S. powdery mildew (Podosphaera xanthii) infection. We report the mode of inheritance, gene action, and heritability of race 2WU.S. resistance in two populations derived from a cross involving the resistant genotype PI 189225 and the susceptible 'Charleston Gray' and PI 269677. Parents, F1, F2, BC1P1, and BC1P2 plants were inoculated and evaluated for leaf and stem resistance in two replicated greenhouse experiments. Segregation patterns revealed that only leaf resistance rating in Charleston Gray × PI 189225 fit the model for single gene inheritance. Generation mean analysis established only additive gene action for leaf resistance while for stem resistance, additive, dominance, and epistatic effects were important. Narrow-sense heritability estimates were higher for stem (0.81) than for leaf (0.58) resistance. Lack of dominance and epistatic effects combined with high heritability indicated high probability of success in selecting for leaf resistance in early generations. Stem resistance had a higher additive effect, lower dominance, and moderate heritability, but progress toward resistance should be possible. In population PI 269677 × PI 189225, epistatic effects combined with low heritability (0.20) and presence of duplicate epistasis may result in slower progress from selection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Changes in the work week drove a larger portion of changes in total labor input during the Great Depression of the 1930s than during other decades. Work-sharing policies appear to be responsible. Herbert Hoover created various work-sharing committees--led by key industrialists--which pushed for shorter work weeks. And Franklin Roosevelt's President's Reemployment Agreement called for sharp cuts in weekly work hours. Spreading available work amongst more people was the goal. During these periods between 50 and 90 percent of declines in labor input were accommodated by falling hours. In recent decades employers have instead relied on layoffs to achieve the same end. Many engineers and hydrologists use the curve number method to estimate runoff from ungaged watersheds; however, the method does not explicitly account for the influence of season or forest cutting on runoff. This study of observed rainfall and runoff for small, forested watersheds that span the Appalachian Mountains of the eastern United States showed that curve numbers calibrated for the growing season tended to be smaller than for the dormant season. Forest cutting tended to increase curve numbers. However, the increase in water yield following forest cutting on these watersheds only lasted 1 year to 11 years, thereby limiting the precision of the curve numbers estimated for these brief hydrologic effect periods. Engineers and hydrologists use the curve number method to estimate runoff from rainfall for different land use and soil conditions; however, large uncertainties occur for estimates from forested watersheds. This investigation evaluates the accuracy and consistency of the method using rainfall-runoff series from 10 small forested-mountainous watersheds in the eastern United States, eight annual maximum series from New Hampshire, West Virginia, and North Carolina, and two partial duration series from Georgia. These series are the basis to compare tabulated curve numbers with values estimated using five methods. For nine of 10 watersheds, tabulated curve numbers do not accurately estimate runoff. One source of the large uncertainty is a consistent decrease in storm-event curve numbers with increasing rainfall. A calibrated constant curve number is suitable for only two of 10 watersheds; the others require a variable watershed curve number associated with different magnitude rainfalls or probabilities of occurrence. Paired watersheds provide consistent curve numbers, indicating that regional values for forested-mountainous watersheds (locally calibrated and adjusted for storm frequency) may be feasible. The article discusses the U.S. labor market between the U.S. Supreme Court rulings "A.L.A. Schechter Poultry Corp. v. United States" in 1935 and "National Labor Relations Board v. Jones & Laughlin Steel" in 1937. The 1935 case ended with the U.S. National Industrial Recovery Act (NIRA) of 1933 being declared unconstitutional, and the 1937 case upheld the constitutionality of the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA), also known as the Wagner Act. The authors argue that economic growth during the period between these two cases reflected a relative absence of government intervention in the labor market to promote higher wages and stronger labor unions.

Accurate estimates of demographic parameters are critical to the management of wildlife populations, including management programs focused on controlling the spread of zoonotic diseases. Rabies managers in the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) have applied a simple raccoon ( Procyon lotor) abundance index (RAI) based on cumulative catch of unique raccoons per unit area to determine vaccine-bait distribution densities. This approach was designed to allow for both the collection of biological samples and to index raccoon abundance to determine bait densities for oral rabies programs. However, post-baiting surveillance data indicate that, on average, only 30% of raccoons sampled have vaccine induced rabies antibody titers, suggesting that bait densities may not be well calibrated to raccoon densities. We trapped raccoons using both capture-mark-recapture (CMR) and the standard RAI to evaluate the accuracy of the current index-based methodology for estimating raccoon density. We then developed a resource selection function from spatial data collected from radio-collared raccoons to standardize trap placement within the existing RAI protocol, and evaluated the performance of this modified RAI approach relative to CMR for estimating raccoon population size. Both abundance and density estimates derived using the RAI consistently underestimated raccoon population sizes compared with CMR methods. Similarly, although the use of resource selection models to inform trap placement appeared to improve the accuracy of the RAI, the effectiveness of this method was inconsistent because of an inability to account for variance in detection probabilities. Despite the logistical advantages of using indices to estimate population parameters to determine vaccine bait distribution densities, our results suggest that adjustments may be necessary to more accurately quantify raccoon abundance, which should improve the effectiveness of rabies management in the United States. Downy mildew, a foliar disease caused by the oomycete Pseudoperonospora cubensis (Berk. and Curt.) Rostov. is one of the most destructive diseases of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.). Moderately resistant cultivars are available, but yield losses are high without the use of fungicides. Higher levels of resistance are needed to reduce the need for fungicides. The objective of this study was to identify new sources of resistance to downy mildew among Plant Introduction accessions from the U.S. National Plant Germplasm System, elite cultivars, and breeding lines of cucumber. A total of 1300 cultigens were tested in Clinton, NC, and Skierniewice, Poland, in 2005 to 2007 under natural field epidemics. The most resistant and susceptible cultigens were further evaluated in replicated experiments in North Carolina and India in 2007 to 2009. Fungicide experiments were run in 2008 and 2009 to identify tolerance, involving weekly applications to one of two sets of material at a location. Results from the retest study confirmed the results of the initial screening. The most resistant cultigens over all environments were PI 605996, PI 330628, and PI 197088. Cultigens have been found that significantly outperform checks in all resistance traits. High yielding and tolerant cultigens have also been identified that could be used in developing improved cultivars. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Approximately 775,000 hip and knee arthroplasties are performed yearly in the United States, with a dramatic increase expected. Patients having hip and knee arthroplasties are at high risk of developing a venous thromboembolism. The American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP) and the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS) have updated guidelines, which outline new prophylactic strategies. Factor Xa inhibitor rivaroxaban has a new recommendation by ACCP and is gradually being adopted by the joint arthroplasty community as an effective oral agent. Other more well-known agents including warfarin, low-molecularweight heparin, aspirin, and fondaparinux continue to be options for prophylaxis. While the goal of prophylaxis continues to be the prevention of venous thromboemboli and pulmonary emboli, it is important to consider the increased bleeding risk associated with their use. The most recent ACCP and AAOS guidelines give clinicians a greater autonomy in choosing a prophylactic agent with greater emphasis placed on dialogue between the surgeon and patient as to the choice of prophylaxis. Abstract: Many low-income consumers face a limited budget for food purchases. The United States Department of Agriculture developed the Thrifty Food Plan to address this problem of consuming a healthy diet given a budget constraint. This dietary optimization program uses common food choices to build a suitable diet. In this article, the United States Department of Agriculture data sets are used to test the feasibility of consuming a Paleolithic diet given a limited budget. The Paleolithic diet is described as the diet that humans are genetically adapted to, containing only the preagricultural food groups of meat, seafood, fruits, vegetables, and nuts. Constraints were applied to the diet optimization model to restrict grains, dairy, and certain other food categories. Constraints were also applied for macronutrients, micronutrients, and long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids. The results show that it is possible to consume a Paleolithic diet given the constraints. However, the diet does fall short of meeting the daily recommended intakes for certain micronutrients. A 9.3% increase in income is needed to consume a Paleolithic diet that meets all daily recommended intakes except for calcium. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is developing high-tolerance, radiation-hardened electronics for missions in and beyond Low Earth orbit. Ferroelectric-based electronics are highly viable candidates for these electronics because of their inherent radiation-hardened property. Since standard memory devices are prone to damage caused by radiation, ferroelectric memory may provide the needed radiation-tolerance. To test the effectiveness of ferroelectric random access memory (FRAM) in Low Earth orbit, a 512 K Ramtron FRAM will be flown on a Low Earth orbit satellite that will be launched by NASA.
