Feeding preference experiments were conducted to determine the feeding habits of Abedus herberti (Heteroptera, Belostomatidae) and Thermonectus marmoratus (Coleoptera, Dytiscidae), two large insects in Sycamore Creek, an intermittent Sonoran desert stream, Arizona, U.S.A. Numbers of live versus dead prey consumed were tested between and across three prey sizes. Five prey species were offered simultaneously (5 live and 5 dead specimens) in each size class. We found that A. herberti preferred live prey of small and medium size, but it chose mainly dead prey in the large size class. These results fitted the model of size-selective predation (Zaret, 1980). Size dependent predators selected prey of increased size, according to their visibility, but only up to where difficulty in handling and probability of escape affect successful consumption. Snails were the most preferred prey of A. herberti. By contrast, T. marmoratus consumed only dead prey of all sizes, but it preferred soft organisms with thin cuticle, such as immature larvae of some mayflies, beetles, dragonflies or fishes. Background: Motivations for joining and maintaining surgical society memberships include networking, educational, and social opportunities. We hypothesized surgeons have membership lapses despite these benefits. We aimed to assess society members motivations for joining, satisfaction with membership, any lapses and if so, reasons for these lapses., Methods: A survey was sent via email to members of the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS), and the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract (SSAT), using society directories., Results: The majority (60%) of respondents felt satisfied with membership. However, 68% reported a lapse in membership. The most common reason for lapse was cost, followed closely by time constraints., Conclusion: Despite a high rate of member satisfaction, a majority of respondents had allowed a membership to lapse, with cost and time constraints being the most common reasons. The United States is currently experiencing an opioid epidemic, as drug overdose deaths have become a leading cause of death. According to the Centers for Disease Control, in 2017, opioids were responsible for 47,000 deaths, which involved both illicit and prescription opioids. A multifaceted public health approach that utilizes public health authorities, health care providers, local hospitals, and affected communities is required to effectively reduce opioid-related morbidity and mortality. The authors of this paper developed an inpatient program on the dual-diagnosis unit at Gracie Square Psychiatric Hospital in New York to target the opioid crisis. The purpose of this program was to train patients and their families on how to respond to an opioid overdose and administer naloxone spray. The paper describes the implementation of this program.

Background: The rate of contralateral prophylactic mastectomy (CPM) for unilateral breast cancer has increased over the past decade, particularly for young women. This study investigates the impact of race and socioeconomic status (SES) on use of CPM., Study Design: Using the National Cancer Data Base (NCDB), we selected 1,781,409 stage 0 to II unilateral breast cancer patients between 1998 and 2011. Trends in use of CPM by race and SES were analyzed using chi-square tests and logistic regression models., Results: For women of all ages, rates of CPM increased, from 1.9% in 1998 to 10.2% in 2011 (p < 0.001), with higher rates in women ≤45 years old, rising from 3.7% in 1998 to 26.2% in 2011 (p < 0.001). Among young women, white women had the greatest increase in CPM from 4.3% in 1998 to 30.2% in 2011 (p < 0.001). In 2011, CPM rates were 30.2% for white, 18.5% for Hispanic, 16.5% for black, and 15.2% for Asian patients (p < 0.001). The gap in CPM use between white and minority patients persisted in every SES classification, geographic region, and facility type. On multivariate analysis, minority women were 50% less likely to undergo CPM than white women were., Conclusions: Young, white, breast cancer patients are twice as likely to undergo CPM compared with women in other racial groups, even after accounting for pathologic, patient, and facility factors. Variations in shared decision-making processes between women of different backgrounds may contribute to these trends, supporting the need for future studies investigating decision-making processes and decisional aids., (Copyright © 2015 American College of Surgeons.
