Abstract: Besides being pushed by technical development and pulled by the demand for hi-tech products, technology is also often influenced greatly by the sudden impacts from other external environments. As shown by the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks (2001), Bali bombings (2002, 2005), Madrid bombings (2004), and London bombings (2005), some technologies have been fundamentally affected by terrorism, especially those concerning globalization, infrastructure, corporations, education, and individuals. Using system dynamics (SD) methodology, our paper first examines the causes of terrorism and why the United States was chosen as the target for the 9/11 terror attacks. The concept of SD helps analysts realize the variation of a complicated system and perceive how an internal feedback loop within a system impacts the whole system''s behavior. After suffering the 9/11 attacks, the American-led coalition carefully considered how to study and develop effective methods for anti-terrorism strategies. These anti-terrorism efforts will have a major impact on technology development, and many opportunities and challenges are likely to arise from such development. Based on the qualitative analytic approach of causal loops, this article explores in detail the opportunities and challenges for technology development prompted by terrorism. The contribution of our study lies in appropriately analyzing links between terrorism and technology development in order to explain the present relevant technology situation and to initiate a discussion of future technology development trends. Like many large US metropolitan areas, the San Francisco Bay Area has experienced rapid suburban employment growth since 1980, much of it concentrated in sub-centres. This paper shows that, contrary to the co-location hypothesis, employment decentralisation has not been associated with shorter average commute distances or durations in the Bay Area. Combining statistics on shifts in modal splits and average vehicle occupancy levels reveals that parallelling the region's sub-centring trend has been a substantial increase in average commute vehicle miles travelled (VMT) per employee between 1980 and 1990. The largest increases occurred in the fastest-growing and most remote suburban centres. Using decomposition analysis, we found that increasing commute distances contributed the most to rising commute VMT per employee, and the distance factor had proportionately the greatest effect on rising commute VMT rates in the most peripheral work centres. Since shifts in commute VMT per employee are thought to be strongly associated with transport externalities, we conclude that the social and environmental implications of the Bay Area's regional growth trends deserve more public policy attention than given to date. Background: Among hypertensive cohorts across different nations, the relationship between the triglyceride-glucose index (TyG) and its conjunction with obesity metrics in relation to cardiovascular disease (CVD) incidence and mortality remains to be elucidated., Methods: This study enrolled 9,283, 164,357, and 5,334 hypertensives from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), UK Biobank (UKBB), and Shanghai Pudong cohort. The related outcomes for CVD were defined by multivariate Cox proportional hazards models, Generalized Additive Models and Mendelian randomization analysis. Mediation analysis explored the mediating role of inflammatory markers in the above relationships., Results: Five measures of insulin resistance were linked to CVD and related death in a U-shaped pattern, with the highest group having different risk increases. Higher glucose triglyceride-waist height ratio (TyG-WHTR) was linked to higher all-cause mortality (UKBB: HR 1.21, 95%CI 1.16-1.26, NHANES: HR 1.17, 95%CI 1.00-1.36), CVD mortality (UKBB: HR 1.36, 95%CI 1.23-1.49, NHANES: HR 1.32, 95%CI 1.00-1.72) risks. In the China Pudong cohort, higher triglyceride/high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (TG/HDL_C) ratio was associated with higher risks of CVD and stroke (HR 1.31, 95%CI 1.00-1.73 and 1.67, 1.06-2.63). Inflammation markers like systemic inflammatory response index (SIRI) and C-reactive protein (CRP) partially explained these links, with CRP having a stronger effect. Genetically predicted TyG was also linked to stroke (OR 1.26, 95%CI 1.10-1.45) risk., Conclusions: An elevated TyG index and its related indices are significantly correlated with an increased risk of CVD and related mortality across three national cohorts. These indices are anticipated to serve as valid predictors of incident CVD and mortality in individuals with hypertension., Competing Interests: Declarations. Background: Urinary incontinence (UI) is closely related to obesity. The aim of this study is to evaluate the association of a novel anthropometric indicator weight-adjusted-waist index (WWI) with UI., Methods: This cross-sectional study used the data from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2001-2018. Weighted multivariable logistic regression was used to evaluate the relationship between WWI and three types of UI [stress UI (SUI), urgency UI (UUI), and mixed UI (MUI)]. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and Delong et al.'s test were utilized for comparison of the predictive capability for UI between WWI and body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC)., Results: A total of 41,614 participants were included in this study, of whom 23.57% had SUI, 19.24% had UUI, and 9.43% had MUI. In the fully adjusted model, WWI was positively associated with three types of UI [SUI: odds ratio (OR) = 1.19, 95%Confidence interval (CI) 1.13-1.25; UUI: OR = 1.18, 95%CI 1.13-1.24; MUI: OR = 1.19, 95%CI 1.11-1.27, all p < 0.001]. Compared to the lowest WWI interval, the positive correlation between WWI and UI still existed in the highest WWI group after converting WWI to a categorical variable by quartiles (SUI: OR = 1.52, 95%CI 1.35-1.71, p < 0.001; UUI: OR = 1.50, 95%CI 1.33-1.69, p < 0.001; MUI: OR = 1.55, 95%CI 1.32-1.83, p < 0.001). WWI had a stronger prediction for three types of UI than BMI and WC (all p < 0.001)., Conclusion: A higher WWI was linked with an increased likelihood of three types of UI (SUI, UUI, and MUI) in the United State population. Compared to BMI and WC, WWI had a stronger predictive power for UI. WWI may be a better adiposity parameter for evaluating UI., (© 2024. The Author(s).)
