Objective: This review provides guidance and ideas for researchers through a comprehensive and comparative analysis of the present state, trends, and hotspots in the pediatric fracture literature over the past 6 years. Methods: We used Citespace 6.1.R6 software to explore the country/region distribution, institutions, journals, keyword analysis, and co-cited references of the literature from Web of Science core database. Results: There are 6472 pieces of pediatric fracture–related literature, including 2962 from 2017 to 2019 and 3510 from 2020 to 2022. The country with the most papers is the United States, and US institutions and journals also have a pivotal position in this field. Research hotspots for pediatric fractures in 2017–2019: The topic with the most attention is bone mineral density leading to related bone diseases. Treatment for pediatric fractures, including supracondylar humeral fractures, Monteggia fractures, forearm fractures, knee fractures, and ankle fractures in children, is another topic of greater interest. Brain injuries and dental injuries in children due to abuse and trauma are also concerning issues. Research hotspots for pediatric fractures in 2020–2022: comparison with 2017–2019 revealed a relative decrease regarding ankle-related epiphyseal injuries, but there is a higher focus on the epidemiology of fractures in children, risk factors, and reasons for childhood trauma. We have confirmed through literature co-citations that the literature of high interest is also in these aspects. Conclusion: Researchers and clinicians can quickly learn about topics of interest through authoritative journals and highly cited literature and rapidly master the current status and frontiers of the field through study, providing ideas for future work. Leakage detectability is a key consideration in evaluating the effectiveness of a measurement, monitoring and verification (MMV) plan for a geologic carbon storage (GCS) project. While studies have shown that surface-based, geophysical monitoring methods may be sensitive enough to detect CO 2 leakage, these methods are an indirect indicator of leakage. A drawback to relying on direct geochemical monitoring is that by the time a significant leak is confirmed, it may be too late to mitigate or remediate the environmental impacts. In this study, we combine information from geophysical and geochemical monitoring methods to provide an integrated diagnosis of leakage events. The detectability for various monitoring parameters (pH, TDS, alkalinity, Ca, Cl, Na, and pressure) collected from monitoring wells are evaluated by leakage detection probability, using simulated wellbore-leakage/plume-migration events and monitoring scenarios for a hypothetical GCS operation at the Kimberlina site in California, USA. The NUFT code is used to model these events, by coupling wellbore-leakage simulations to 3-dimensional reactive, multi-phase, flow and transport simulations of brine and CO 2 leakage-plume migration in aquifers overlying the GCS reservoir. Wellbore leakage in legacy wells located 1.4, 3.4 and 6.8 km from the CO 2 injector is evaluated for a range of (1) wellbore bottom-hole pressure and CO 2 saturation determined by GCS simulations, (2) regional groundwater gradient in the aquifers, and (3) wellbore permeability. Simulated leakage-induced changes in seven monitoring parameters at different depths are used to calculate the corresponding detection probabilities, based on the background distribution data and selected monitoring-technology detection thresholds. The responses for these monitoring parameters are tested and combined to enhance the overall detectability. The results indicate the leakage signals are more easily detected at shallower depths where buoyant CO 2 has migrated and flashed from supercritical to gas phase, causing a large increase in CO 2 volume. While the results suggest pH monitoring is more responsive to the simulated leakage events than TDS monitoring at shallower depths, TDS changes may be more readily observed at greater depths. The addition of carbonate alkalinity can confirm CO 2 leakage detection and help distinguish CO 2 leakage from other contamination sources. Direct pressure change measurements are very sensitive to leakage, but the rapid and broad propagation of the pressure response hinders using such measurements to easily locate the origin of leakage. Combining measurements could greatly improve the confidence of leakage diagnosis. High bottom-hole CO 2 saturation, such as that for a leaky well close to the injector (˜1.4 km), high regional groundwater gradient, and high wellbore permeabilities all increase the leakage plume size, and thus the leakage detectability. Our analysis suggests pressure monitoring is a valuable indicator of leakage events at early stages, while pH, TDS and carbonate alkalinity monitoring can directly diagnose leakage impacts by providing more detailed information in the groundwater receptor. Finally, an example Bayesian belief network model is presented for evaluating the effect of risk reduction options in terms of joint monitoring detection probability using the associated simulation scenarios. Evidence of the association between global cognitive function and mortality is much, but whether specific cognitive function is related to mortality is unclear. To address the paucity of knowledge on younger populations in the US, we analyzed the association between specific cognitive function and mortality in young and middle-aged adults. We analyzed data from 5,144 men and women between 20 and 59 years of age in the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (1988–94) with mortality follow-up evaluation through 2006. Cognitive function tests, including assessments of executive function/processing speed (symbol digit substitution) and learning recall/short-term memory (serial digit learning), were performed. All-cause mortality was the outcome of interest. After adjusting for multiple variables, total mortality was significantly higher in males with poorer executive function/processing speed (hazard ratio (HR) 2.02; 95% confidence interval 1.36 to 2.99) and poorer recall/short-term memory (HR 1.47; 95% confidence interval 1.02 to 2.12). After adjusting for multiple variables, the mortality risk did not significantly increase among the females in these two cognitive tests groups. In this sample of the US population, poorer executive function/processing speed and poorer learning recall/short-term memory were significantly associated with increased mortality rates, especially in males. Background. Although the link between hyperuricemia and metabolic syndrome had been recognized, the association of the dyslipidemia among individuals with hyperuricemia remains not comprehensively assessed. Methods. Using NHANES III study, we examined the relation between serum lipid profiles and different serum uric acid levels, including serum total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL cholesterol, apolipoprotein-B, lipoprotein (a), apolipoprotein AI, ratio of triglycerides to HDL cholesterol, and ratio of apolipoprotein-B to AI. Results. After adjusting for potential confounders, average differences (95% confidence interval) comparing the top to the bottom (reference) serum uric acid were 0.29 (0.19, 0.39) mmol/L for total cholesterol, 0.33 (0.26, 0.41) mmol/L for triglycerides, 0.14 (0.01, 0.27) mmol/L for LDL cholesterol, −0.08 (−0.11, −0.05) mmol/L for HDL, and 0.09 (0.05, 0.12) g/L for serum apolipoprotein-B. Notably, ratios of triglycerides to HDL cholesterol and apolipoprotein-B to AI were also linearly associated with uric acid levels (P for trend < 0.001). Conclusions. This study suggested that serum LDL cholesterol, triglycerides, total cholesterol, apolipoprotein-B levels, ratio of triglycerides to HDL cholesterol, and ratio of apolipoprotein-B to AI are strongly associated with serum uric acid levels, whereas serum HDL cholesterol levels are significantly inversely associated. In the clinical practice, the more comprehensive strategic management to deal with dyslipidemia and hyperuricemia deserves further investigation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Although the link between impaired lung function and cardiovascular events and type 2 diabetes mellitus has been recognized, the association between impaired lung function and metabolic syndrome has not been comprehensively assessed in the United States (U.S.) population. The aim of our study was to explore the association between impaired lung function and metabolic syndrome in a nationally representative sample of men and women. This cross-sectional population-based study included 8602 participants aged 20–65 years in the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III). We examined the relationship between the different features of metabolic syndrome and lung function, including forced vital capacity (FVC) and forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1). After adjusting for potential confounders such as age, body mass index, inflammatory factors, medical condition, and smoking status, participants with more components of metabolic syndrome had lower predicted values of FVC and FEV1 (p for trend <0.001 for both). Impaired pulmonary function was also associated with individual components of metabolic syndrome, such as abdominal obesity, high blood pressure, high triglycerides, and low high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol (p<0.05 for all parameters). These results from a nationally representative sample of US adults suggest that a greater number of features of metabolic syndrome is strongly associated with poorer FVC and FEV1. In clinical practice, more comprehensive management strategies to address subjects with metabolic syndrome and impaired lung function need to be developed and investigated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the late 1990s, image processing was first applied to steel bridge coating assessment in the United States. Yet, there has not been any robust method that could solve nonuniform illumination problems to date. In this regard, this paper aims to develop an approach that handles nonuniform illumination in rust image recognition. The proposed approach also contributes to rust intensity recognition and process automation. This paper adopts the a*b* color configuration (of the L*a*b* color space) which is shown to be the best coordinate system for rust recognition by the proposed method. Different rust colors are regarded as relating to different degrees of rust intensity. Due to the difficulty of defining light rust colors, the adaptive-network-based fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) is used as the framework for the box-and-ellipse-based ANFIS (BE-ANFIS). Illumination adjustment is used to overcome the nonuniform illumination problem. The proposed BE-ANFIS is trained using 120 rust images of the size of 256×256 pixels. The performance of BE-ANFIS is compared to the fuzzy C-means (FCM) method, one of the most popular image recognition methods, and the adaptive ellipse approach (AEA) which is the writers’ previous approach. Based on testing 35 rust images, the results show that BE-ANFIS can better recognize rust intensity (i.e., distinguishing light and dark rusts) than FCM and AEA. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article reports on the worldwide impact triggered by the financial crisis in the U.S. credit markets. The use of off-balance-sheet financing vehicles by financial institutions is one factor that contributed to the crisis. Off-balance-sheet vehicles enable financial institutions to provide liquidity to the credit markets indirectly, without incurring similar capital-adequacy constraints as on-balance-sheet assets.

The article focuses on Statement of Financial Accounting Standards No. 159 (SFAS 159) issued by the U.S. Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) which will take effect after November 15, 2007. SFAS 159 is titled "The Fair Value Option for Financial Assets and Financial Liabilities, Including an Amendment of FASB Statement No. 115." It provides companies with the option to report financial instruments at a fair value and aims to lessen the volatility in reported earnings.

Breast cancer is the most common neoplasm in the world among women. The age-specific incidences and onset ages vary widely between Asian and Western countries/regions. Invasive breast cancer cases among women from 1997 to 2011 were abstracted from the International Agency for Research on Cancer and the Taiwan Cancer Registry. Age-period-cohort analysis was performed to examine the trends. The cohort effect was prominent in South Korea, Taiwan, Japan, and Thailand, possibly related to the timing of westernization. The risk of breast cancer initially rose with the birth cohorts in Hong Kong and India (both former British colonies), peaked, and then declined in recent birth cohorts. Unlike other Asian countries/regions, virtually no birth cohort effect was identified in the Philippines (a Spanish colony in 1565 and the first Asian country to adopt Western cultural aspects). Moreover, an at-most negligible birth cohort effect was identified for all ethnic groups (including Asian immigrants) in the United States. This global study identified birth cohort effects in most Asian countries/regions but virtually no impact in Western countries/regions. Internet-based applications (apps) are rapidly developing in the e-Health era to assess the dietary intake of essential macro-and micro-nutrients for precision nutrition. We, therefore, validated the accuracy of an internet-based app against the Nutrition Data System for Research (NDSR), assessing these essential nutrients among various social-ethnic diet types. The agreement between the two measures using intraclass correlation coefficients was good (0.85) for total calories, but moderate for caloric ranges outside of <1000 (0.75) and >2000 (0.57); and good (>0.75) for most macro- (average: 0.85) and micro-nutrients (average: 0.83) except cobalamin (0.73) and calcium (0.51). The app underestimated nutrients that are associated with protein and fat (protein: −5.82%, fat: −12.78%, vitamin B12: −13.59%, methionine: −8.76%, zinc: −12.49%), while overestimated nutrients that are associated with carbohydrate (fiber: 6.7%, B9: 9.06%). Using artificial intelligence analytics, we confirmed the factors that could contribute to the differences between the two measures for various essential nutrients, and they included caloric ranges; the differences between the two measures for carbohydrates, protein, and fat; and diet types. For total calories, as an example, the source factors that contributed to the differences between the two measures included caloric range (<1000 versus others), fat, and protein; for cobalamin: protein, American, and Japanese diets; and for folate: caloric range (<1000 versus others), carbohydrate, and Italian diet. In the e-Health era, the internet-based app has the capacity to enhance precision nutrition. By identifying and integrating the effects of potential contributing factors in the algorithm of output readings, the accuracy of new app measures could be improved.

Oral cancer is the fourth most common cancer among men in Taiwan. The age-standardized incidence rate of oral cancer among men in Taiwan has increased since 1980 and became six times greater in 2014. To enable effective public health planning for oral cancer, research on the projection of oral cancer burden is essential. We conducted an age-period-cohort analysis on the incidence of oral cancer among men in Taiwan from 1997 to 2017 and extrapolated the trend to 2025. We found that the period trends for young adults aged between 25 and 44 have already peaked before 2017; the younger, the earlier, and then the trends declined. The cohort trends have peaked roughly at the 1972 birth cohort and then declined for all ages. Despite the increasing trend in the age-standardized incidence rate for oral cancer among men in Taiwan from 1997 to 2017, we forecast a peak attained, an imminent decline after 2017, and a decrease of 8.4% in age-standardized incidence rate from 2017 to 2025. The findings of this study contribute to developing efficient and comprehensive strategies for oral cancer prevention and control., (© 2022. Background/purpose: The emergence of Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase (KPC)-producing strains is a challenge for clinicians. The characteristics and virulence of variants of KPC-producing K. pneumoniae isolates were evaluated., Methods: Five clinical isolates-three KPC subtypes from Taiwan (KPC2-TW, KPC3-TW, and KPC17-TW) and two clinical strains from the United States (US; KPC2-US, KPC3-US)-were included. Virulent traits and capsular serotypes were analyzed by Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). Serum killing, neutrophil phagocytosis, and mice lethargy studies were performed to evaluate virulence., Results: Multilocus sequence typing (MLST) demonstrated that KPC2-TW and KPC17-TW belonged to sequence type (ST)11, and KPC2-US, KPC3-US, and KPC3-TW to ST258. KPC3-TW expressed capsular serotype K1, whereas the others were non-K1/K2/K5 isolates. MLST analysis indicated that ST11 strains were serum resistant, whereas ST258 isolates were serum sensitive. ST11 isolates exhibited significantly higher 15-minute phagocytic rates than ST258 isolates (70.28 ± 16.68% vs. 34.88 ± 10.52%, p < 0.001). The capsular serotype K1 strain was more resistant to neutrophil phagocytosis than non-K1/K2/K5 isolates (27.1 ± 10.23% vs. 54.46 ± 20.94%, p = 0.050). All KPC-producing strain variants from Taiwan and the US demonstrated less virulence in a mouse lethality study, where the LD50 ranged from approximately 10(6) colony-forming units (CFU) to >10(7) CFU. Immunological responses were not significantly correlated with KPC subtype; however, responses were associated with MLST and capsular serotype., Conclusion: Production of KPC itself was not associated with increased virulence despite different variants of KPC.
