Bacterial Panicle Blight (BPB), caused by Burkholderia glumae, is a bacterial disease in rice (Oryza sativa) that reduces rice yield and quality for producers and consequently creates higher market prices for consumers. BPB is caused by the simultaneous occurrence of high daily minimum temperatures (~22°C) and relative humidity (~77%), which may increase under the current scenario of global warming. This study hypothesized that the economic damage from warming may cause an increase in economic losses, though at a decreasing rate per degree. Thus, this study estimates the yield losses associated with BPB occurrences at the county level in the Mid-South United States (US) for annual rice production in 2003–2013 and under +1–3°C warming scenarios using daily weather information with appropriate thresholds. From the estimated losses, the total production potential of a BPB-resistant rice was quantified using a spatial equilibrium trade model to further estimate market welfare changes with the counterfactual scenario that all US county-level rice production were BPB resistant. Results from the study indicate that the alleviation of BPB would represent a $69 million USD increase in consumer surplus in the US and a concomitant increase in rice production that would feed an additional 1.46 million people annually assuming a global average consumption of 54 Kg per person. Under the 1°C warming scenario, BPB occurrences and production losses would cause price increases for rice and subsequently result in a $112 million USD annual decrease in consumer surplus in the US and a loss of production equivalent to feeding 2.17 million people. Under a 3°C warming scenario, production losses due to BPB cause an annual reduction of $204 million USD in consumer surplus in the US, and a loss in production sufficient to feed 3.98 million people a year. As global warming intensifies, BPB could become a more common and formidable rice disease to combat, and breeding for BPB resistance would be the primary line-of-defense as currently no effective chemical options are available. The results of this study inform agriculturalists, policymakers, and economists about the value of BPB-resistance in the international rice market and also help support efforts to focus future breeding toward climate change impact resilience. Energy use in buildings has great variability. In order to design and operate low energy buildings as well as to establish building energy codes and standards and effective energy policy, it is crucial to understand and quantify key factors influencing building energy performance. This study investigates air-conditioning (AC) energy use of four office buildings in four locations: Beijing, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Berkeley. Building simulation was employed to quantify the influences of key factors, including climate, building envelope and occupant behavior. Through simulation of various combinations of the three influencing elements, it is found that climate can lead to AC cooling consumption differences by almost two times, while occupant behavior resulted in the greatest differences (of up to three times) in AC cooling consumption. The influence of occupant behavior on AC energy consumption is not homogeneous. Under similar climates, when the occupant behavior in the building differed, the optimized building envelope design also differed. Terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) has become a powerful data acquisition technique for high-resolution high-accuracy topographic and morphological studies. Conventional static TLS surveys require setting up numerous reflectors (tie points) in the field for point clouds registration and georeferencing. To reduce surveying time and simplify field operational tasks, we have developed a rapid TLS surveying method that requires only one reflector in the field. The method allows direct georeferencing of point clouds from individual scans to an East–North–Height (ENH) coordinate system tied to a stable geodetic reference frame. TLS datasets collected at a segment of the beach–dune–wetland area in Freeport, Texas, USA are used to evaluate the performance of the rapid surveying method by comparing with kinematic GPS measurements. The rapid surveying method uses two GPS units mounted on the scanner and a reflector for calculating the northing angle of the scanner's own coordinate system (SOCS). The Online Positioning User Service (OPUS) is recommended for GPS data processing. According to this study, OPUS Rapid-Static (OPUS-RS) solutions retain 1–2 cm root mean square (RMS) accuracy in the horizontal directions and 2–3 cm accuracy in the vertical direction for static observational sessions of approximately 30 min in the coastal region of Texas, USA. The rapid TLS surveys can achieve an elevation accuracy (RMS) of approximately 3–5 cm for georeferenced points and 2–3 cm for digital elevation models (DEMs). The elevation errors superimposed into the TLS surveying points roughly fit a normal distribution. The proposed TLS surveying method is particularly useful for morphological mapping over time in coastal regions, where strong wind and soft sand prohibit reflectors from remaining strictly stable for a long period. The theories and results presented in this paper are beneficial to researchers who frequently utilize TLS datasets in their research, but do not have opportunities to be involved in field data acquisition. • Direct normal irradiance (DNI) is computed by a physics-based solution of the gross solar radiation in the circumsolar region. • The new DNI model is coupled with a numerical weather prediction model to forecast day-ahead DNI over the contiguous United States. • The significant bias in the conventional forecasting models has been remarkably reduced. Direct normal irradiance (DNI) is often interpreted differently in ground measurements and forecasts using numerical weather prediction (NWP) models, leading to substantial bias in DNI forecasting especially under cloudy-sky conditions. To mitigate the bias, we use the Fast All-sky Radiation Model for Solar applications with DNI (FARMS-DNI) to conduct physics-based simulations of solar radiation in the circumsolar region. The DNI is quantified using the sum of the radiation along the sun direction and the scattered radiation within the circumsolar region. FARMS-DNI is coupled with the Weather Research and Forecasting model with solar extensions (WRF-Solar) to predict day-ahead DNI in 9-km pixels over an extended domain covering the contiguous United States. The DNI forecasts for the entire year of 2018 are validated using surface-based observations at the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) and Surface Radiation Budget Network (SURFRAD) sites and a satellite-based solar radiation product developed by the procedure of the National Solar Radiation Data Base (NSRDB). The results show that the WRF-Solar coupled with the conventional Beer-Bouguer-Lambert law underestimes the overall DNI forecasts by 30%-60%, which is a joint effect of the uncertainties in computing the circumsolar radiation and forecasting cloud properties. Brominated flame retardants (BFRs) are environmental pollutants linked to health risks, including increased platelet (PLT) levels that may elevate the risk of thrombosis and cardiovascular diseases. This study examined the association between BFR exposure and PLT levels among 5831 adult participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) (2007-2016). Of the 12 BFRs analyzed, BB153, BDE17, BDE85, BDE154, BDE183, and BDE209 showed significant positive correlations with PLT levels (p < 0.05), with BDE17 demonstrating the strongest correlation (Spearman's coefficient = 0.122). After adjusting for confounders, all BFRs except BDE153 remained significantly associated with elevated PLT levels. Restricted cubic spline analysis indicated varying associations, with BDE99, BDE183, and BDE209 showing an "S"-shaped relationship, while BB153, BDE17, and BDE66 presented an inverted "J"-shaped relationship. BDE153 exhibited a "U"-shaped relationship with PLT level. Both weighted quantile sum regression and quantile-based g-computation confirmed that BFR mixtures positively correlated with PLT levels, with BDE17 as the most significant contributor. Background: Evidence on the association between serum vitamin C (sVC) levels and obesity is limited. This study aimed to explore the relationship between sVC and body mass index (BMI) in adolescents aged 12 to 19 years., Methods: We analyzed data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2003-2006, with 3952 participants. sVC and BMI were independent variables and dependent variables, respectively. The associations of sVC with BMI were examined using multivariable linear regression models. Age, sex, and race/ethnicity were analyzed as subgroups. Then, we devised smooth curve fittings and saturation threshold analysis to address the nonlinear relationship., Results: sVC had a negative correlation with BMI after adjusting for all covariates (β: -1.020, 95% CI: -1.359, -0.680). In the subgroup analysis by age, sex, and race/ethnicity, there was still a negative correlation between sVC and BMI (p < 0.05). The analysis of saturation effects of sVC and BMI showed the relationship between sVC and BMI in female adolescents followed an N-shaped curve, whereas the relationship between sVC and BMI in adolescents aged 12-15 years and Mexican Americans followed a U-shaped curve., Conclusion: Based on the results, proper vitamin C supplementation may be beneficial to weight loss. Background: Chronic inflammation may contribute to increased mortality risk in individuals with osteoarthritis (OA), but research on the prognostic value of inflammatory biomarkers is limited. We aimed to evaluate the associations of the systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) and systemic inflammation response index (SIRI) with all-cause and cardiovascular mortality among US adults with OA., Methods: This cohort study included 3545 adults with OA aged ≥ 20 years from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 1999-2020. The SII and SIRI were calculated using complete blood cell count data. Participants were categorized as having a higher or lower SII and SIRI using cutoff points derived by the maximally selected rank statistics method. Cox proportional hazards models, Fine-Gray competing risk regression models and time-dependent receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis were used to evaluate the associations between the SII/SIRI and mortality in OA patients., Results: Over a median follow-up of 5.08 (3.42-9.92) years, 636 (17.94%) deaths occurred, including 149 (4.20%) cardiovascular deaths. According to multivariable-adjusted models involving demographic, socioeconomic, and health factors, OA patients with a higher SII had a twofold greater risk of all-cause mortality than patients with a lower SII (HR 2.01; 95% CI: 1.50-2.68). Similarly, a higher SIRI was associated with an 86% increased risk of all-cause mortality relative to a lower SIRI (HR 1.86; 95% CI: 1.46-2.38). Similar to the trend found with all-cause mortality, patients with an elevated SII and SIRI had a 88% and 67% increased risk of cardiovascular mortality, respectively, compared to patients with a lower SII (HR 1.88; 95% CI: 1.16-3.03) and SIRI (HR 1.67; 95% CI: 1.14-2.44). Background: The aim of our research was to examine the association of novel anthropometric indices (a body shape index (ABSI), waist-to-height ratio (WtHR), conicity index (CI) and body roundness index (BRI)) and traditional anthropometric indices (body mass index (BMI), and waist (WC)) with prevalence of kidney stone disease (KSD) in the general population of United States (U.S.)., Methods: In this study, we conducted a cross-sectional analysis among the participants in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey between the years 2007 and 2020. Weighted multivariable logistic regression analysis, restricted cubic spline (RCS), receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves, and subgroup analysis were performed to analyze the association of ABSI, BRI, WtHR, CI, BMI and WC with prevalence of KSD., Results: In total, 11,891 individuals were included in our study. The RCS plot shown that the linear positive association was found between ABSI, BRI, WtHR, CI, BMI and WC and KSD risk. Additionally, the ROC curve demonstrated that the area under the curve of ABSI, BRI, WtHR, and CI was significantly higher than traditional anthropometric indices, including BMI and WC., Conclusions: Our study found that the discriminant ability of ABSI, BRI, WtHR, and CI for KSD was higher than BMI and WC. Vitamin A plays a pivotal role in health, particularly in regulating fat metabolism. Despite its significance, research into the direct relationship between vitamin A levels and obesity, especially among adolescents, is sparse. This study aims to explore this association within the adolescent population in the United States. This cross-sectional study analyzed the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data from 1999 to 2006, with 8218 participants. The levels of vitamin A in the serum were determined based on utilizing high-performance liquid chromatography with photodiode array detection. The relationship between serum vitamin A concentrations and body mass index (BMI) was evaluated using weighted multiple linear regression models, incorporating subgroup analyses by sex and race/ethnicity to provide nuanced insights. A positive correlation was observed between serum vitamin A levels and BMI, with BMI increasing progressively across vitamin A quartiles (P < 0.001). Using the lowest quartile of serum vitamin A as a reference, the BMI of the highest quartile of serum vitamin A was 1.236 times higher (95% CI 0.888, 1.585). Subgroup analyses revealed that this positive association persisted across different genders and racial/ethnic groups (P < 0.001). Notably, smooth curve fitting and saturation threshold analysis unveiled an inverted U-shaped relationship between serum vitamin A and BMI among female adolescents, non-Hispanic Whites, Mexican Americans, and other races/ethnicities groups. Our study substantiates the association between serum vitamin A levels and the risk of obesity/overweight status in adolescents. The findings suggest the potential serum vitamin A is an early biomarker for identifying obesity risk, although further studies are needed to determine to clarify its role as a contributing factor to obesity. Introduction: Although lung function measures are associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD), the added predictive values of these measures remain unclear., Methods: From the UK Biobank, 308 415 participants free of CVD with spirometry parameters were included. The CVD outcomes included were defined by QRISK3, the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association (ACC/AHA) and the European Systematic Coronary Risk Evaluation (SCORE) prediction models, respectively. Cox proportional hazard models were used to estimate the associations of lung function measures with CVD outcomes. The predictive capability was determined by the decision curve analyses., Results: Over a median follow-up of 12.5 years, 21 885 QRISK3 events, 12 843 ACC/AHA events and 2987 SCORE events were recorded. The associations of spirometry parameters with CVD outcomes were L-shaped. Restrictive and obstructive impairments were associated with adjusted HRs of 1.84 (95% CI: 1.65 to 2.06) and 1.72 (95% CI: 1.55 to 1.90) for SCORE CVD, respectively, compared with normal spirometry. Similar associations were seen for QRISK3 CVD (restrictive vs normal, adjusted HR: 1.30, 95% CI: 1.25 to 1.36; obstructive vs normal, adjusted HR: 1.20, 95% CI: 1.15 to 1.25) and ACC/AHA CVD (restrictive vs normal, adjusted HR: 1.39, 95% CI: 1.31 to 1.47; obstructive vs normal, adjusted HR: 1.26, 95% CI: 1.19 to 1.33). Using models that integrated non-linear forced expiratory volume in 1 s led to additional 10-year net benefits per 100 000 persons of 25, 43 and 5 for QRISK3 CVD at the threshold of 10%, ACC/AHA CVD at 7.5% and SCORE CVD at 5.0%, respectively., Conclusion: Clinicians could consider spirometry indicators in CVD risk assessment. Cercospora leaf blight (CLB) of soybean, caused by Cercospora cf. flagellaris , C. kikuchii , and C. cf. sigesbeckiae , is an economically important disease in the southern United States. Cultivar resistance to CLB is inconsistent; therefore, fungicides in the quinone outside inhibitor (QoI) class have been relied on to manage the disease. Approximately 620 isolates from plants exhibiting CLB were collected between 2018 and 2021 from 19 locations in eight southern states. A novel polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) assay based on two genes, calmodulin and histone h3 , was developed to differentiate between the dominant species of Cercospora , C. cf. flagellaris , and C. cf. sigesbeckiae . A multilocus phylogenetic analysis of actin, calmodulin, histone h3, ITS rDNA, and transcription elongation factor 1-α was used to confirm PCR-RFLP results and identify remaining isolates. Approximately 80% of the isolates collected were identified as C. cf. flagellaris , while 15% classified as C. cf. sigesbeckiae , 2% as C. kikuchii , and 3% as previously unreported Cercospora species associated with CLB in the United States. PCR-RFLP of cytochrome b ( cytb ) identified QoI-resistance conferred by the G143A substitution. Approximately 64 to 83% of isolates were determined to be QoI-resistant, and all contained the G143A substitution. Results of discriminatory dose assays using azoxystrobin (1 ppm) were 100% consistent with PCR-RFLP results. To our knowledge, this constitutes the first report of QoI resistance in CLB pathogen populations from Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, Tennessee, and Texas. In areas where high frequencies of resistance have been identified, QoI fungicides should be avoided, and fungicide products with alternative modes-of-action should be utilized in the absence of CLB-resistant soybean cultivars., Competing Interests: The author(s) declare no conflict of interest.

During their first year of medical residency (internship), 35% of training physicians in the United States suffer at least one depression episode. We assessed whether there is a similar increase of depression among first year residents in China, and identified predictors of depression in the two systems. 1006 residents across three cohorts (2016-2017, 2017-2018 and 2018-2019) at Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Peking Union Medical College were assessed in parallel with three cohorts of 7028 residents at 100 + US institutions. The Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) depressive symptoms were measured at baseline and quarterly. Demographic, personal and residency factors were assessed as potential predictors of PHQ-9 depression scores. Similar to training interns in the US, the proportion of participants in China who met depression criteria at least once during the first year of residency increased substantially, from 9.1 to 35.1%. History of depression and symptoms at baseline were common factors significantly associated with depression during residency. By contrast, neuroticism, early family environment, female gender and not being coupled were associated with depression risk only in the US, while young age was a predictor of depression only in China. Fear of workplace violence also was a predictor in China. Long duty hours and reduced sleep duration emerged as training predictors of depression in both countries. Psychotic symptoms of dementia are highly prevalent and lead to poor medical outcomes and substantial dysfunction. To date, which drug to use remains controversial without a summary of all direct or indirect comparisons of pharmacotherapy. Therefore, we conducted a systematic review with pairwise and network meta-analysis to examine efficacy and tolerability outcomes of pharmacological treatments in dementia patients. MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, and PubMed were searched systematically up to August 31, 2020. We included trials of cholinesterase inhibitors (ChEIs), memantine, antipsychotics, antidepressants, and mood stabilizers, with final approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. We ranked the comparative effects of all drugs against placebo with surface under the cumulative ranking (SUCRA) probabilities. This analysis is based on 34 trials, which included 10,415 patients randomly assigned to 15 commonly used drug regimens. Donepezil (standardized mean difference [SMD] -0.30, 95% credible interval [CrI] -0.50 to -0.12; SUCRA, 0.85), memantine (SMD -0.20, 95%CrI -0.34 to -0.07; SUCRA, 0.68) and aripiprazole (SMD -0.17, 95% CrI -0.32 to -0.02; SUCRA, 0.62) showed greater benefit than placebo, and with relatively good tolerability in network meta-analyses. Risperidone was also found to be more efficacious than placebo (SMD -0.16, 95% CrI -0.28 to -0.05; SUCRA, 0.60), but with poor tolerability (odds ratios [OR] 1.50, 95% CrI 1.06-2.26). Donepezil, memantine, haloperidol, aripiprazole and risperidone were more efficacious than quetiapine (SMDs ranged from -0.36 to -0.22). Besides, donepezil, memantine and mirtazapine were more efficacious than sertraline (SMDs ranged from -0.47 to -0.36). Most of the results were rated as "low" to "very low". Several effective treatment choices for psychotic symptoms are available across drug classes. Donepezil, memantine and aripiprazole are probably the appropriate options to consider when a pharmacological treatment is indicated. Sheath blight (ShB; caused by Rhizoctonia solani AG1-1A) and narrow brown leaf spot (NBLS; Cercospora janseana ) are among the most important diseases affecting rice production in Texas and other southern parts of the United States. Because of the high yield potential, hybrid rice acreage is continually increasing. Understanding the relative levels of resistance to ShB and NBLS in hybrids compared to those of inbreds is important for effective disease management; however, this information remains largely unknown. A comparison of the performance of hybrid rice and inbred rice was performed involving 173 hybrid and 155 inbred genotypes (cultivars and elite breeding lines) over the course of five crop seasons (2016 to 2020) and two locations in Texas. The results showed that genotype, cultivar type (hybrid or inbred), location, and their interactions had significant effects on the severity of ShB and NBLS. The ShB severity in hybrid genotypes was significantly lower than that in inbred genotypes, with an average reduction of 27% in disease severity during the 5-year, two-location evaluation. Most (53%) of the hybrid genotypes were rated moderately resistant, whereas almost all (97%) of the inbred genotypes ranged from very susceptible to moderately susceptible. Similarly, NBLS severity in hybrid genotypes is significantly lower than that in inbred genotypes. All but four hybrid genotypes exhibit immune reactions to NBLS. In contrast, 77% of inbred genotypes exhibit NBLS symptoms, with disease resistance reactions ranging from susceptible to resistant. The results demonstrate that hybrid rice is generally less susceptible to sheath blight and has a higher level of resistance against NBLS compared with inbred rice.

Farmers rely heavily on the use of strobilurin fungicides to manage sheath blight (ShB) caused by Rhizoctonia solani AG1-IA, the most important disease in rice in the southern United States. Greenhouse and field studies were conducted to evaluate the potential use of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPRs) in combination with a reduced rate of azoxystrobin application as a strategy to improve the current fungicide-reliant management. Of the nine antagonistic PGPR strains screened in the greenhouse, Bacillus subtilis strain MBI600 provided the most significant and consistent suppression of ShB. Efficacy of strain MBI600 was further evaluated at the concentrations of 0, 10 3 , 10 6 , 10 9 , and 10 11 CFU/ml alone or in combinations with 0, 17, 33, 50, 67, 83, and 100% of the recommended application rate (0.16 kg a.i./ha) of azoxystrobin. Strain MBI600 applied at 10 6 ,10 9 , and 10 11 CFU/ml alone was effective in reducing ShB severity. Combinations of this strain at these rates with ≥33% of the recommended application rate of azoxystrobin further reduced ShB severity. A dose-response model defining the relationships between strain MBI600, azoxystrobin, and ShB severity was established. Estimates of the effective concentrations (EC 50 and EC 90 ) of strain MBI600 when applied in combination with 50% of the recommended application rate of azoxystrobin were 10 4 and 10 9 CFU/ml, respectively. A field trial was conducted over 4 years to verify the efficacy of their combinations. Strain MBI600 alone, when applied at 10 9 CFU/ml at the boot stage, reduced ShB severity but did not significantly increase grain yields each year. Combination of strain MBI600 with azoxystrobin at half of the recommended application rate improved efficacy of strain MBI600, reducing ShB severity to a level comparable to that of azoxystrobin applied at the full rate in all 4 years. The combined treatment also increased grain yield by 14 to 19%, comparable to the fungicide applied at the full rate in 3 of 4 years. Combined use of PGPR strain MBI600 with a reduced rate of azoxystrobin application can be a viable management option for control of ShB while allowing producers to use less fungicide on rice.

Purpose Childhood cancer survivors are at increased risk of subsequent neoplasms (SNs), but the germline genetic contribution is largely unknown. We assessed the contribution of pathogenic/likely pathogenic (P/LP) mutations in cancer predisposition genes to their SN risk. Patients and Methods Whole-genome sequencing (30-fold) was performed on samples from childhood cancer survivors who were ≥ 5 years since initial cancer diagnosis and participants in the St Jude Lifetime Cohort Study, a retrospective hospital-based study with prospective clinical follow-up. Germline mutations in 60 genes known to be associated with autosomal dominant cancer predisposition syndromes with moderate to high penetrance were classified by their pathogenicity according to the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics guidelines. Relative rates (RRs) and 95% CIs of SN occurrence by mutation status were estimated using multivariable piecewise exponential regression stratified by radiation exposure. Results Participants were 3,006 survivors (53% male; median age, 35.8 years [range, 7.1 to 69.8 years]; 56% received radiotherapy), 1,120 SNs were diagnosed among 439 survivors (14.6%), and 175 P/LP mutations were identified in 5.8% (95% CI, 5.0% to 6.7%) of survivors. Mutations were associated with significantly increased rates of breast cancer (RR, 13.9; 95% CI, 6.0 to 32.2) and sarcoma (RR, 10.6; 95% CI, 4.3 to 26.3) among irradiated survivors and with increased rates of developing any SN (RR, 4.7; 95% CI, 2.4 to 9.3), breast cancer (RR, 7.7; 95% CI, 2.4 to 24.4), nonmelanoma skin cancer (RR, 11.0; 95% CI, 2.9 to 41.4), and two or more histologically distinct SNs (RR, 18.6; 95% CI, 3.5 to 99.3) among nonirradiated survivors. Conclusion The findings support referral of all survivors for genetic counseling for potential clinical genetic testing, which should be prioritized for nonirradiated survivors with any SN and for those with breast cancer or sarcoma in the field of prior irradiation.

A simple, sensitive and specific liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method was developed and validated for the determination of Pulsatilla saponin D, a potential antitumor constituent isolated from Pulsatilla chinensis in rat plasma. Rat plasma samples were pretreated by protein precipitation with methanol. The method validation was performed in accordance with US Food and Drug Administration guidelines and the results met the acceptance criteria.
