Ethnopharmacological relevance The genus Acer (Aceraceae), commonly known as maple, comprises approximately 129 species that primarily grow in the northern hemisphere, especially in the temperate regions of East Asia, eastern North America, and Europe. These plants have been traditionally used to treat a wide range of diseases in East Asia and North America. Moreover, clinical studies have shown that medicinal plants belonging to Acer are highly effective in the treatment of rheumatism, bruises, hepatic disorders, eye disease, and pain, and in detoxification. This review provides a systematic and constructive overview of the traditional uses, chemical constituents, and pharmacological activities of plants of the genus Acer . Material and methods This review is based on a literature study of scientific journals and books from libraries and electronic sources such as SciFinder, ScienceDirect, Springer, PubMed, CNKI, Google Scholar, Baidu Scholar, and Web of Science. The literature in this review related to chemical constituents and pharmacological activities dates from 1922 to the end of October 2015. Furthermore, ethnopharmacological information on this genus was obtained from libraries and herbaria in China and USA. Results In traditional medicine, 40 species, 11 subspecies, and one varieta of the genus Acer are known to exhibit a broad spectrum of biological activities. To date, 331 compounds have been identified from 34 species of the genus Acer , including flavonoids, tannins, phenylpropanoids, diarylheptanoids, terpenoids, benzoic acid derivatives, and several other types of compounds, such as phenylethanoid glycosides and alkaloids. Preliminary pharmacological studies have shown that the extracts and compounds isolated from this genus exhibit a broad spectrum of biological activities such as antioxidant, antitumor, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, hepatoprotective, and antiobesity activities, as well as promoting osteoblast differentiation. To date, reports on the toxicity of Acer species to humans are very limited, and the major safety concern of these plants is in the veterinary field. Conclusions Based on our systematic review, Acer species can be used to treat rheumatism, hepatic disorders, eye disease, pain, etc. effectively. Some indications from ethnomedicine have been validated by pharmacological activities, such as the anti-inflammatory and hepatoprotective activities of the species. The available literature showed that most of the activities of these species can be attributed to flavonoids and tannins. To ensure the safety and efficacy in clinical practice in the future, studies identifying active molecules and clarifying their pharmacological mechanisms as well as toxicity are needed. Owing to modern developments in the traditional medicine industry, more people now acknowledge the efficacy of traditional medicine. As the demand for herbal medicines gradually increases, the focus of the industry will shift to how to increase production while maintaining the high quality of raw materials and final products to promote the international trade in herbal medicines. In the long history of herbal medicine, many countries and regions have formulated relevant standards to regulate the cultivation of local herbs to ensure the safety and reliability of the products. Due to cultural and historical differences, the policies for formulating herbal cultivation standards vary greatly between regions, which hinders the international trade of herbal medicines. This paper collates the guidelines of good agricultural and collection practices of the European Union, China, World Health Organization and the United States, and makes a comprehensive comparison of its contents such as production environments, production area suitability, air, soil, and water standard regulations, inter alia. This article aims to explore the differences in good agriculture and collection practice in herbal medicine in various regions and provides a reference for the development of international guidelines for herbal quality management, which will aid with the development of herbal medicine quality standardization globally and exchange services in the trade of herbal medicines., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Ltd. What Is Known and Objective: Lactic acidosis (LA) is a rare but potentially lethal side effect of linezolid (LZD). However, limited by the study population, the number of patients with LA is insufficient to summarize all the clinical characteristics and risk factors., Methods: We evaluated the association between LZD and LA using the reporting odd ratio (ROR) for mining the adverse event report signals in the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System database from January 2013 to December 2019., Results and Discussion: There were 6218 reports of LZD as the primary suspected drug or secondary suspected drug, of which 275 (4.42%) reports were of LA. The ROR of LA with the use of LZD was 39.976 (95% CI 35.365-45.189). In the age composition of patients, elderly individuals (aged ≥60 years) accounted for the higher proportion, 42.54% (n = 117). LA usually occurred two weeks after LZD administration (n = 33). LZD was the unique suspected drug, accounting for 37.45% (n = 103) of all reports of LA. The drug with the most frequent occurrence of combination with LZD was 'meropenem' and 'warfarin'., What Is New and Conclusions: The ROR of LA caused by LZD was very high, and the number of reports about LA caused by other antibiotics was significantly different from that of LA caused by LZD. The drug combined with LZD did not seem to affect the occurrence of LA, and the high occurrence of warfarin in the reports deserves the attention of doctors., (© 2020 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.)
