Localised population declines and increased pressure from fisheries have prompted the promotion of manta ray interaction tourism as a non-consumptive, yet economically attractive, alternative to the unsustainable harvesting of these animals. Unfortunately, however, wildlife tourism activities have the potential to adversely impact focal species. In order to be sustainable, operations must be managed to mitigate negative impacts. A preliminary assessment of reef manta ray, Manta alfredi, behaviour identified short-term behavioural responses during a third of tourism interactions in the Ningaloo Marine Park, Western Australia. Although it remains unknown whether these responses translate to biologically significant impacts on the population as a whole, it is proposed that the precautionary principle be used to guide management intervention in the absence of conclusive evidence of the magnitude of tourism impacts. The principle supports the implementation of precautionary strategies to protect species and their environment from harm, even when the extent of the harm is yet to be confirmed. An increase in the level of industry management is recommended, including the implementation of a licensing system and adherence of all operators to a mandatory code of conduct during manta ray interactions. Considering the well designed and precautionary-driven management program of the Ningaloo whale shark tourism industry operating within the same marine park, a management program with the same underlying principles and objectives is deemed to be an ideal framework to build a comprehensive management plan for the manta ray interaction industry. The article focuses on multi-species coastal reef shark's spatial and temporal movement patterns. The species Carcharhinus melanopterus, Negaprion acutidens and Triaenodon obesus were among the 58 species observed by the authors in the study. They disclosed that it was at 13:00 to 14:00 hours that peak daily detection takes place for C. melanopterus and C. amblyrhynchos while juvenile C. melanopteus and N. acutidens have theirs at 5:00 and 10:00 respectively. They conclude that the bay in the north of Western Australia is an ideal place for juvenile sharks.

Stomach eversion is common in sharks captured during fishing activities, however, records of subsequent retraction of the stomach once animals are released are rare and limited by the logistics of recording post-release behaviors in the wild. Here, we report stomach eversion and retraction by a tiger shark captured and tagged at Ningaloo Reef, Western Australia. Initial eversion occurred during capture, and retraction was recorded by video and tri-axial acceleration sensors approximately five minutes after release. The ability to retract the stomach without apparent ill effect is consistent with the documented resilience of tiger sharks to stressful capture events, but remains to be confirmed for other species. • Stomach eversion and retraction were recorded by a captured and tagged tiger shark. • Biologging tags documented the energetic stomach retraction behavior. • Stomach retraction is consistent with tiger shark resilience to stressful capture events. Increasing vessel traffic in the marine environment due to commercial and recreational activities has amplified the number of conflicts with marine animals. However, there are limited multi-year observations of the healing rate of marine animals following vessel strike. Here we document the healing rate of a reef manta ray Mobula alfredi, following lacerations caused by a propeller along the pectoral fin. We demonstrate a high healing capacity, with wound length following a negative exponential curve over time. Lacerations healed to 5% of the initial wound length (i.e. 95% closure) within 295 days. The wounds appeared to stabilise at this point as observed more than three years following the incident and resulted in a distinctive scarring pattern. Examination of an extensive photo-identification catalogue of manta rays from the Ningaloo Coast World Heritage Area showed that the scarring pattern occurs more frequently than previously recognised, as the wounds had been previously attributed to failed predation attempts. This study provides baseline information for wound healing from vessel strike in reef manta rays and indirect evidence for increased vessel strikes on manta rays within the Ningaloo Coast World Heritage Area.
