Phenotypic plasticity is the ability of an individual genotype to express phenotype variably in different environments. This study investigated the plasticity of yield-related traits of bread wheat by utilising 225 doubled haploid (DH) lines developed from cv. Westonia and cv. Kauz, through two field trials in Western Australia. Plasticity was quantified via two previously published methods: responsiveness to varying ecological conditions and slopes of reaction norms. The spikelets/spike was the most plastic trait, with an overall plasticity of 1.62. The least plastic trait was grain protein content, with an overall plasticity of 0.79. The trait hierarchy based on phenotypic plasticity was spikelets/spike > thousand kernel weight > seed number > seed length > grain yield > grain protein content. An increase in yield plasticity of 0.1 was associated with an increase in maximum yield of 4.45 kg ha−1. The plasticity of seed number and grain protein content were significantly associated with yield plasticity. The maximal yield was positively associated with spikelets/spike and grain yield, whereas it negatively associated with grain protein content. In contrast, the minimal yield was found to be negatively related to the plasticity of spikelets/spike and the plasticity of grain yield, whereas it was not related to grain protein content plasticity. Seed number and seed length exhibited plastic responses at the higher fertilisation state while remaining relatively stable at the lower fertilisation state for the wheat DH population. The finding of the current study will play a key role in wheat improvement under the changing climate. Issue Addressed: Housing is a social determinant of health. Migrants are at an increased risk of insecure housing, overcrowding, and homelessness which can lead to poor quality of life and well‐being. This study aimed to identify clustering patterns of homelessness risks among people from culturally and linguistically diverse (CaLD) backgrounds in Western Australia (WA). Methods: Participants from CaLD backgrounds (n = 143, 81.8% male) were identified from secondary cross‐sectional data sourced from Vulnerability Index Service Prioritisation Decision Assistance Tool (VI‐SPDAT) surveys conducted with people experiencing homelessness in Perth, WA, between 2012 and 2020. A two‐step cluster analysis was used to identify subgroups within the data, and chi‐square tests compared demographic characteristics and drivers of homelessness among the determined clusters. Results: Three distinct clusters were identified and labelled as 'high‐risk group' (n = 50, 35.0%), 'medium‐risk group' (n = 39, 27.3%) and 'low‐risk group' (n = 47, 32.9%). The most vulnerable participants (with VI‐SPDAT score ≥ 10) were all clustered in the 'high‐risk group'. Conclusion: The analysis identified subgroups within and between CaLD populations and highlighted limitations with data collection instruments for measuring homelessness among these groups. So What?: To prevent health issues associated with homelessness and improve social determinants of health, improvements in research and service provision are recommended to facilitate equitable access to secure housing for people from CaLD populations. Aims: The Australian Health Survey 2011 to 2013 indicated that Western Australian women had good iodine status, suggesting adequate consumption of iodine from food, however, little is known about pregnant women in this state. The aim was to investigate the iodine‐containing food practices of Western Australian pregnant women. Methods: Pregnant women attending antenatal clinics at a public tertiary hospital in Perth, Western Australia, were invited to complete a questionnaire investigating consumption of key iodine food sources and knowledge of iodine‐containing foods. Food frequency data were entered into FoodWorks based on the Australian Food and Nutrition Database 2007. Results: A total of 425 women took part in the study with a mean (SD) age of 29.4 (5.5) years. Sixty percent of women reported consuming bread at least daily. Only 37.6% of women used iodised salt, but the median (25, 75 percentile) iodine intake of these women was 183 (142, 267) μg/day compared to 148 (100, 228) μg/day of iodine from food only. Ethnicity was associated with iodised salt use: 76% of Asian women compared with 33% of Caucasian women. Three quarters of the women did not know if any foods are required to be fortified with iodine. Conclusion: The iodine‐containing food practices of pregnant women in this state suggest a risk of insufficiency. The present study is limited by the use of a semi‐quantitative and non‐validated food frequency questionnaire, thus assessment of the iodine intake and status of pregnant women representative of the ethnic mix of Western Australia is recommended. Agricultural operations routinely expose farm workers to high levels of soil dust and other airborne particulate matter that have been linked to adverse health outcomes. The main objective of this study was to investigate exposure to agricultural dust during seeding operations of Western Australian farm workers. Twenty-one wheat-belt farms were recruited to participate in the study. Data were collected over the 6-week seeding period of April-June 2014. Each farm was visited once, and workers were asked to complete a workplace survey that asked questions related to minimizing exposure to agricultural dusts and occupational health and safety issues on their farm. Farmers were also asked to simultaneously participate in monitoring of personal exposure to inhalable or respirable dust along with real-time monitoring for particulate air pollution in their tractor cabin. Sampling was undertaken for 4 hr. The results showed that, on average, Western Australian farmers were exposed to personal respirable dust concentrations above the Australian Institute of Occupational Hygienists recommended guideline values, with some farmers being exposed to concentrations up to seven times higher than the value for respirable dusts. In comparison, in-cabin dust concentrations were lower, although some individual tractors recorded intermittently higher levels, which might be attributed to the type of work activity or process being undertaken. Remaining in tractor cabins with closed doors and windows with properly maintained seals might minimize the infiltration of hazardous dusts and may provide some protection from dust exposures. Future research should focus on educating and providing farm owners and workers with more information on adopting work processes and procedures related to minimizing harmful exposures to agricultural dusts. Introduction/aims: Motor neuron disease (MND) is a progressive neurodegenerative condition with a limited life expectancy. There is very little data on mortality and its associated factors beyond 30 days following gastrostomy. We explored the demographic, clinical, and nutritional predictors for early mortality at 30, 90, and 180 days following gastrostomy in these patients., Methods: This was a retrospective study involving 94 MND patients in Western Australia who underwent gastrostomy between 2015 and 2021. Patients were divided into two groups based on mortality at 30, 90, and 180 days post-gastrostomy. T-test (or Mann-Whitney), chi-square test and Fisher's exact test were used for detecting between-group differences in various factors. Multivariable logistic regression was used to identify factors associated with post-gastrostomy mortality at 90 and 180 days., Results: No mortality was attributable to gastrostomy-related complications. Lower forced vital capacity (FVC) (p = .039) and greater weight loss (%) (p = .022) from diagnosis to gastrostomy were observed in those who died within 30 days post-gastrostomy. Older age (p = .022), male sex (p = .041), lower FVC (p = .04), requiring but not tolerating noninvasive ventilation (p = .035), and greater weight loss (%) (p = .012) were independent predictors of 90-day post-gastrostomy mortality. However, only older age (p = .01) and greater weight loss (p = .009) were predictors of mortality at 180 days post-gastrostomy., Discussion: Our data indicated that mortality at 90 and 180 days was influenced by the weight loss (%) from diagnosis to gastrostomy, highlighting the importance of nutritional care in the MND population. Background: A growing body of epidemiological and clinical evidence has implicated air pollution as an emerging risk factor for cardiometabolic disease. Whilst individuals spend up to two-thirds of daily time in their domestic residential environment, very few studies have been designed to objectively measure the sub-clinical markers of cardiometabolic risk with exposure to domestic indoor air pollutants. This cross-sectional study aims to investigate associations between the components of domestic indoor air quality and selected sub-clinical cardiometabolic risk factors in a cohort of healthy adults living in Perth, Western Australia., Methods: One hundred and eleven non-smoking adults (65% female) living in non-smoking households who were aged between 35-69 years were recruited for the project. Study subjects were invited to participate in all sections of the study, which included: Domestic indoor air monitoring along with the concurrent 24 h ambulatory monitoring of peripheral and central blood pressure and measures of central hemodynamic indices, standardized questionnaires on aspects relating to current health status and the domestic environment, a 24 h time-activity diary during the monitoring period, and clinic-based health assessment involving collection of blood and urine biomarkers for lipid and glucose profiles, as well as measures of renal function and an analysis of central pulse wave and pulse wave velocity., Results: This study provides a standardized approach to the study of sub-clinical cardiometabolic health effects that are related to the exposure to indoor air pollution., Conclusion: The findings of this study may provide direction for future research that will further contribute to our understanding of the relationship that exists between indoor air pollution and sub-clinical markers of cardiometabolic risk.

Background: Iodine requirements increase during pregnancy and although national recommendations for daily iodine supplementation (150 µg) exist, there is no research related to the uptake of these recommendations by pregnant women in Western Australia., Aims: To investigate the use of iodine-containing supplements and associations with their use in a sample of Western Australian pregnant women., Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on pregnant women attending antenatal clinics in a public tertiary hospital for women and neonates in Perth during 2012 and 2013 (n = 425). Women completed a self-administered questionnaire. Frequencies and percentages were obtained for categorical variables and χ 2 tests conducted to assess associations between iodine-containing supplement use and sociodemographic and pregnancy-related factors., Results: A total of 24% of pregnant women reported using iodine-containing supplements prior to pregnancy compared to 66% during the previous two months. Age and maternal income were associated with use prior to pregnancy only (P = 0.004 and P = 0.031) and first pregnancy was associated with use during pregnancy only (P = 0.006). Ethnicity and reporting use in the first two trimesters were associated with the use of iodine supplements both in the year prior to pregnancy (P = 0.002 and P = 0.020, respectively) and during pregnancy (P < 0.001 and P = 0.001, respectively)., Conclusions: Two-thirds of women reported use of iodine-containing supplements during pregnancy, within the range reported for other Australian states. One-quarter reported use prior to pregnancy. Background: Indoor air pollution is still considered one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. We aimed to investigate the potential association between indoor particulate matter (PM) and fasting clinic blood pressure in adult Australians. Methods: Sixty-three participants residing within the Perth metropolitan area were studied. Participants were aged between 18 and 65 years and free of major medical conditions. We conducted 24-h monitoring of residential PM concentrations, including the size fractions PM1, PM2.5, PM4, and PM10. All participants attended a clinical assessment at Curtin University following a 10⁻12 h overnight fast. Results: In this study we found that PM1 and PM2.5 were significantly associated with heart rate: a one interquartile range (IQR) increase in PM1 or PM2.5 was associated with a 4⁻6 beats per minute (bpm) increase in heart rate. Both PM10 and total PM exposure had a significant impact on systolic blood pressure (SBP): a one IQR increase in PM10 and total PM were associated with a 10 mmHg (95% CI: 0.77⁻20.05) and 12 mmHg (2.28⁻22.43 mmHg) increase in SBP, respectively. Conclusion: The study findings provide additional support to the thesis that indoor air pollution is an important modifiable factor in the risk of hypertension.

Objectives: This study aimed to develop and validate an online instrument to: (1) identify common alcohol-related social influences, norms and beliefs among adolescents; (2) clarify the process and pathways through which proalcohol norms are transmitted to adolescents; (3) describe the characteristics of social connections that contribute to the transmission of alcohol norms; and (4) identify the influence of alcohol marketing on adolescent norm development., Setting: The online Youth Alcohol Norms Survey (YANS) was administered in secondary schools in Western Australia PARTICIPANTS: Using a 2-week test-retest format, the YANS was administered to secondary school students (n=481, age=13-17 years, female 309, 64.2%)., Primary and Secondary Outcome Measures: The development of the YANS was guided by social cognitive theory and comprised a systematic multistage process including evaluation of content and face validity. A 2-week test-retest format was employed. Exploratory factor analysis was conducted to determine the underlying factor structure of the instrument. Test-retest reliability was examined using intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and Cohen's kappa., Results: A five-factor structure with meaningful components and robust factorial loads was identified, and the five factors were labelled as 'individual attitudes and beliefs', 'peer and community identity', 'sibling influences', 'school and community connectedness' and 'injunctive norms', respectively. The instrument demonstrated stability across the test-retest procedure (ICC=0.68-0.88, Cohen's kappa coefficient=0.69) for most variables., Conclusions: The results support the reliability and factorial validity of this instrument. Background: Exclusive breastfeeding for 6 months is acknowledged universally as the optimal feeding method for infants in order to provide the greatest health and well-being gains for the infant and mother. Despite this, many women stop short of attaining this desired outcome for their infant. With the permeation of the Internet into most of society, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of a breastfeeding support Internet intervention on breastfeeding outcomes on women living in regional Western Australia., Materials and Methods: A nested intervention design within a longitudinal cohort titled the Regional Infant Feeding Study examined the effect of an Internet support Web site on the infant feeding practices of women living in regional Western Australia., Results: In total, 414 women participated in the Internet study and were randomly assigned to the control group (n=207) or the intervention group (n=207). Women enrolled in the intervention were significantly more likely to be exclusively breastfeeding at 6 months postpartum compared with control group participants. Those women experiencing breastfeeding problems were more likely to access the Internet., Conclusions: This breastfeeding support intervention study demonstrated a positive effect on longer-term exclusive breastfeeding for those enrolled in the intervention group. Together with more traditional methods of support, the Internet provides another possible method for promoting positive long-term breastfeeding outcomes.

Background: Breastfeeding is accepted as the best way of feeding infants, and health authorities recommend exclusive breastfeeding to around 6 months of age, but despite the evidence of its benefits, few mothers meet this goal. Infants who are exclusively breastfed in the early postpartum period are more likely to continue breastfeeding at 6 and 12 months, reinforcing the role that Baby-Friendly hospital practices play in supporting exclusive breastfeeding., Objectives: This study aimed to determine the rate of breastfeeding initiation and identify the factors associated with exclusive breastfeeding at discharge from hospital for rural mothers., Methods: The prospective cohort study recruited 489 women from hospitals in regional Western Australia following the birth of their infant. Breastfeeding exclusivity at discharge was assessed based on mothers' self-reported infant feeding behavior during her hospital stay. The self-administered baseline questionnaire was completed by 427 mothers., Results: Breastfeeding was initiated by 97.7% of the mothers in this cohort, with 82.7% exclusively breastfeeding at hospital discharge. The odds of exclusive breastfeeding at discharge were more than 4 times higher for women whose infants did not require admission to the special care nursery (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 4.43; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.98-9.99). Demand feeding (aOR = 3.33; 95% CI, 1.59-6.95) and 24-hour rooming-in (aOR = 2.31; 95% CI, 1.15-4.62) were also significant positive factors., Conclusion: The findings suggest that hospital practices are strong predictors of exclusive breastfeeding. Greater emphasis on Baby-Friendly hospital practices in the early postpartum period may help the establishment of exclusive breastfeeding, assisting rural mothers to reach established international breastfeeding recommendations., (© The Author(s) 2014.)

Background: Breastfeeding practices might be influenced by migration to another country. Although the "healthy migrant effect" is commonly reported in epidemiology, evidence for it in breastfeeding practices is weak., Objectives: This study aimed to compare the initiation and duration of breastfeeding between Chinese Australian migrants and Chinese mothers in mainland China and test the healthy migrant effect in Chinese Australian migrants in Perth, Western Australia., Methods: A survey was undertaken of 239 Chinese mothers living in Perth and 1844 mothers living in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, PR China, with a response rate of 96.7% and 87.8%, respectively., Results: The breastfeeding initiation rate in Chinese Australian mothers (94.1%) was higher than in mothers in China (86.2%, P < .001). Chinese Australian mothers also had a longer breastfeeding duration, greater "full breastfeeding" rate at 6 months, and greater "any breastfeeding" rates at 6 and 12 months. After controlling for potential confounding variables, the results of the binary logistic regression analysis showed that the location of the mother (Australia or China) was associated with breastfeeding practices. Chinese mothers living in Chengdu were less likely to initiate breastfeeding (odds ratio = 0.47, 95% confidence interval, 0.25-0.89) and breastfeed their babies at 12 months (odds ratio = 0.48, 95% confidence interval, 0.33-0.69) than Chinese mothers in Perth., Conclusion: The higher breastfeeding initiation and longer breastfeeding duration by Chinese migrant mothers in Perth than mothers in Chengdu suggest a "healthy migrant effect."

Objectives: To study the relationship between exercise by the mother and breast-feeding initiation and duration, and its effect on infant growth., Design: A cohort study of mothers and infants, recruited at birth. Infant feeding methods were recorded in detail and breast-feeding was categorised as 'any' or 'full'. Exercise levels were categorised using the metabolic equivalent tasks approach based on details of physical activity recorded in questionnaires., Setting: Perth, Western Australia., Subjects: A total of 587 mothers were interviewed on seven occasions over a period of 12 months., Results: There was no difference in the means of infant weight and length changes, indicating that exercise appeared to have no significant influence on infant growth up to 52 weeks after birth (P=0.236 and 0.974, respectively). The mother's level of exercise was not significantly associated with breast-feeding to 6 or 12 months. This applied to 'full' and 'any' categories of breast-feeding., Conclusion: Exercise does not affect breast-feeding outcomes at the usual levels of activity undertaken by mothers. Breast-feeding and exercise are important for maintaining and promoting health, and this study provides reassurance to health professionals wishing to encourage mothers to continue both behaviours.
