Intertidal (tidal flat) reclamation along the Chinese coastline, especially which is in Jiangsu Province, has increased markedly in recent years. However, the hydrodynamic disturbance and environmental impacts of this activity are not yet fully understood. In this study, a process-based depth-averaged model is used to evaluate quantitatively the possible impacts of intertidal reclamation for the southern Yellow Sea region. The simulation results show that reclamation of both inshore and offshore intertidal areas of ~1800 km (according to the approved governmental reclamation scheme) would result in three remarkable changes in tidal patterns: enhanced M and M tidal amplitudes in coastal areas, strengthened negative tidal asymmetry in the southern region of the sand ridge system, and an enhanced tidal energy flux toward offshore through the main channels in the south. These changes would result in some negative impacts. The enhancement in local tidal amplitude could increase the probability of coastal hazards, and the offshore sediment transport tendency resulting from negative tidal asymmetry in the south could lead to severe erosion. The enhanced energy flux transported offshore may also affect far-field regions. On the other hand, alternative reclamation of ~400 km of offshore intertidal area could significantly minimize hydrodynamic disturbances to the local tidal system. Offshore reclamation with lower environment impacts may be the future for coastal development. To cope with the potential environmental risks caused by reclamation, it is recommended to strengthen environmental impact assessment and overseeing of reclamation plans, and advance international cooperation in terms of coastal management. The source and processes controlling the deposition of the sand fraction of muddy seafloor sediments remain poorly understood. Surficial seafloor sediments were collected offshore of the Eastern Shandong Peninsula and were analyzed regarding their detrital heavy mineral constituents and grain size distributions to determine their spatial distribution patterns, sand fraction provenance, and transport pathways. Five sediment types were identified in the study area: clayey silt, silt, sandy silt, silty sand, and sand. Each of these sediment types displayed distinct grain size parameters of their corresponding sand fractions. Moreover, three statistical clusters of sand grains were identified, suggesting variations in provenances and sedimentary processes from one cluster to the next. Twenty-five species of detrital heavy minerals in the sand fraction were identified and then assigned to four categories based on their mineral stability (i.e., ultrastable, stable, moderately stable, and unstable). The sandy sediments were enriched in ultrastable and stable heavy minerals, indicating that these sand grains mostly originated from coastal erosion of granitic and/or metamorphic rocks. In contrast, the muddy sediments were characterized by unstable heavy minerals dominated by hornblende and epidote. The results of principal component analysis further suggested that these sand grains are similar in terms of their provenance (coastal erosion) but have undergone complex sedimentary processes. Relative sea level changes during the late Quaternary caused shifts in the sediment sources and supplies, which were the primary factors controlling the grain sizes of the sand fractions and heavy mineral assemblages in the surficial sediments of the study area. The Pu activities and Pu/Pu atom ratios were analyzed using a double-focusing SF-ICP-MS for sediment core samples obtained in 2007-2008 from the North Jiangsu tidal flats in the Yellow Sea in China. Particular attention was focused on the Pu/Pu atom ratios in the sediment to identify the origins of Pu isotopes. The profiles of Pu activities in the sediment cores are similar to those of the Cs activities. The Pu/Pu atom ratios in the tidal flats showed typical global fallout values, indicating that this area did not receive the possible early direct close-in fallout or oceanic current transported Pu from the Pacific Proving Grounds (PPG). If any, the contribution of the PPG source Pu to the total Pu inventory is negligible. This is different from the sediments in the Yangtze River estuary in the East China Sea, where the PPG source Pu contributed ca. 45 % to the total inventory. In addition, the observation of the global fallout origin Pu in the North Jiangsu tidal flats indicated that the nuclear power plant in the region was not causing any alteration/contamination to the Pu/Pu atom ratios. The Pu and Cs activities/inventories in the sediment cores showed correlation to the mean clay sediment compositions (fine particles) in the tidal flats. Therefore, mud deposits are served as sinks for the anthropogenic radionuclides in the tidal flats and the Yellow Sea. Integrated with the previously reported spatial distributions of Pu and Cs activities in the surface sediments of the Yellow Sea, the mechanism of Pu transport with the ocean currents and the scavenging characteristics in the Yellow Sea were discussed. An understanding of the dynamics and behaviors of suspended sediments is vital in analysis of morphological, environmental, and ecological processes occurring in coastal marine environments. To study the mechanisms of maintaining high suspended sediment concentrations (SSCs) on a tide-dominated offshore shoal, we measured water depths, current velocities, SSCs, wave parameters and bottom sediment compositions in the southern Yellow Sea. These data were then used to calculate bottom shear stresses generated by currents ( τ c ), waves ( τ w ), and wave–current interactions ( τ cw ). SSCs time series exhibited strong quarter-diurnal peaks during spring tides, in contrast to the semidiurnal signal during neap tides. A Fourier analysis showed that suspended sediment variations within tidal cycles was mainly controlled by resuspension in most stations. There existed relatively stable background SSCs (maintaining high SSCs among tidal cycles) values at all four stations during both windy (wind speed > 9.0 m/s) and normal weather conditions (wind speed < 3.0 m/s). The background SSCs had strong relationship with spring/neap-averaged τ cw , indicating background SSCs were mainly controlled by mean bottom shear stress, with a minimum value of 0.21 N/m 2 . On account of the strong tidal currents, background SSCs of spring tides were greater than that of neap tides. In addition, on the base of wavelet, statistics analyses and turbulence dissipation parameter, background SSCs during slack tide in the study area may be maintained by intermittent turbulence events induced by a combined tidal current and wave action.
