In September 2017, during the implementation of “Monumentalized Early Iron Age Landscapes in the Danube river basin”, an international project involving the Institute of Archaeology from Zagreb along with partners from five Central European countries, the archaeological team of the Institute of Archaeology determined that one of the most famous prehistoric monuments in Croatia and one of the few giant unexplored prehistoric burial mounds in Central Europe had been robbed and severely damaged during the robbery. At the time of writing, the police investigation is complete and the suspects in this serious culturocide are awaiting the start of the trial. Because of the danger of further damage to this archaeological monument, the intervention funds of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia were used by the Institute of Archaeology to start emergency rescue excavations at Gomila in Jalžabet in early winter 2017 already, and to continue them in 2018 and 2019. The excavations in the structure of the Gomila grave chamber and the work on the dromos were continued during 2019. A small trench was opened on the eastern slope of the large tumulus, and flotation and sieving were continued of the archaeological layers from the excavations. The urgent rescue excavations of the Jalžabet Gomila and the entire archaeological landscape along the Bistričak stream fit perfectly into the sub-theme A4: Ritual within the Strategy of the Scientific Activity of the Institute. In May 2012, the Institute of Archaeology carried out field surveys for the purposes of a cultural heritage impact assessment. On the section between the junction Prilesje and Kloštar-Ivanić and Ivanić Grad, a total of 22 sites were identified in the length of 18 kilometres. Medieval pottery was discovered on nearly all these sites, with fewer finds from antiquity and prehistory. However, the really important result is, in fact, the locating of sites that were hitherto unknown in this poorly investigated area. In the area of the construction of the Sv. Klara junction on the Zagreb bypass, a total of 5 concentrations of surface finds were identified, where older and more recent material were mixed together, which is consistent with the fairly high intensity of construction in the urban periphery area. The last survey was carried out in the Istria County between Lupoglav and Vranje. The well-known structures of the prehistoric and rich medieval heritage of the Lupoglav area are not jeopardised by the construction of the new road although the existence of new sites may be concealed by the impassable vegetation. During July 2011 the rescue excavations of the site AN 6 Gornji Vukojevac on the Zagreb - Sisak highway route, section Velika Gorica (South) - Lekenik, were continued (Fig. 1). The site is situated at a prominent elevation, featuring the stream Koravec valley to the south. Rescue excavations in 2010 on the southern part of the elavation, on an area approximately 11 200 m² large, defined the remains of Late Bronze Age and Roman settlement as well as the remains of one Roman incineration grave. Rescue excavations in 2011 that were carried out on an area of 5430 m², covered the northern and north-eastern part of the site. Given the size and the depth of burials, different types were singled out, the most numerous being the pits, trenches and post holes. The largest number of post holes can be connected, which probably represent the remains of houses and storages or fences. (Fig. 2). Few shallow pits of oval shape were singled out, whereas burials of shallow and narrow ditches of an U-or V-section which belong to the infrastructure of the Roman settlement are more numerous (Fig. 3). These are probably the boundaries of yards or gardens, or family lots with the houses most likely situated in the centre and surrounded by various ancillary buildings. In the western part of the exploration, the burial of a trench that could easily be a boundary of the propagation of the Late Bronze Age settlement, was singled out. In the fillings, fragments of pottery vessels, daub, bricks and tegulae were found. Only a small number of ceramic fragments can be dated to the Late Bronze Age. Among the forms of ceramic vessels made on a potter's wheel, fragments of bowls and pots belonging to the part of the Roman provincial ceramography can be identified. In the eastern part of the explored area rare artefacts belonging to the the Late Medieval or Early Modern period settlement were isolated. On the highest section of the site, in the part of the Roman settlement, four incineration graves were found (Fig.5-6) containing the remains of the burned bones, pottery shards and metal artefacts which, like the entire settlement, can be dated from the 1st to the beginning of the 3rd century. In 2007 and 2008, specialists from the Institute of Archaeolog y in Zagreb and the Našice Local Heritage Museum conducted the second and third stages of systematic archaeological field survey of the Našice area, focussing on its western part. In 2007, the Donja Motičina, Đurđenovac and Šaptinovci cadastral municipalities were examined, on which occasion seventeen sites were registered, among which the most frequent were late medieval sites, although prehistoric sites were also rather frequent, while the least common were Roman sites. In 2008, prospecting continued in the Gradac Našički, Seona and Zoljan cadastral municipalities. In two weeks, twenty-three sites were registered, from prehistory and Antiquity to the Middle Ages. In 2006, experts from the Institute of Archaeology in Zagreb and the Native Museum in Našice, along with external associates, carried out the first systematic survey of the archaeological sites in the outer western part covered by the Native Museum of Našice, which is related to the cadastral municipalities of Feričanci, Beljevina and Bokšić. Within the period of two weeks, 18 sites were registered, reaching from Prehistory and the Antiquity up to the Middle Ages. 4 finds of stone axes with handle holes were registered (Feričanci-čitluk and Zgone, Beljevina-Gaj and Bokšić-Gajić), dated from the Neolithic until the early Bronze Age. Prehistoric ceramics were found on three sites (Bokšić-Jazvanci and CPS, Bokšić Lug-Grede), Antique ceramics on two (Feričanci-Brkićev arman and Bokšić-Pod sečom), and most frequent were the finds of Medieval ceramics (Feričanci-Maljuge and Grgaševci, Beljevina-Zajčevke and Kod groblja, as well as Bokšić-Brestina, Jazvanci, Staro selo, Pod sečom, Krivača, Završetak Osječke ulice and Gajić). In the course of 2006, a team of archaeologists from the Institute of Archaeology in Zagreb carried out surveys and recordings of archaeological sites on the proposed plots of the future motor road within the first phase of the preparatory works for the Studies on the Environmental Effect of the Construction of the Transversal of Ilok. The route of the planned motor road - the transversal of Ilok - passes through the regions of Vukovar and Vinkovci, ie. the region of East Croatia along the borders with Serbia. The region of Vukovar and Vinkovci is geographically allotted the western part of Srijem, i.e. the region between the rivers Vuka and Danube in the north, Sava in the south, the minor river Jošava in the west and the Serbian border in the east. In the north of this prevalently lowland region, the highest part in the relief is the loess plain of Vukovar, on which the western slopes of the mountain Fruška gora stretch. The middle - lowest lowland part - is filled by areas of dense forests by the river Spačva. The eastern part of Slavonia and the western part of Srijem in the regions of East Croatia had been part of the European traffic corridors throughout all periods of history, which had brought about the development of numerous settlements in an undisturbed series throughout Prehistory, Antiquity and the Middle Ages until the present day. From Ilok to Lipovac, in the length of 40 km, 7 archaeological sites from the Prehistoric, Antique and Medieval periods were recorded. Among others, in the west of Tovarnik, parts of a Roman main road were discovered, which lead from Ptuj (Poetovio), via Osijek (Mursa) to Srijemska Mitrovica (Sirmium). On the plots between Ilok and šarengrad, parts of a Roman main road, which had lead along the border, were discovered - the Batina Limes in Baranja (Ad Militare), via Dalj (Teutoburgium) and Sotin (Cornacum) to Ilok (Cuccium) and further downstream along the Danube. After the field survey, the sites were contemporarily protected and the study "Cultural and Historical Heritage" was composed, stating the conditions for the construction of road routes - to prevent the destruction of valuable cultural heritage, which includes the obligation of constant supervision by archaeologists when the surface layers of earth along the transversal route be removed as well as archaeological rescue investigations of the registered sites.
