Item does not contain fulltext, Left-right asymmetry is an important organizing feature of the healthy brain that may be altered in schizophrenia, but most studies have used relatively small samples and heterogeneous approaches, resulting in equivocal findings. We carried out the largest case-control study of structural brain asymmetries in schizophrenia, with MRI data from 5,080 affected individuals and 6,015 controls across 46 datasets, using a single image analysis protocol. Asymmetry indexes were calculated for global and regional cortical thickness, surface area, and subcortical volume measures. Differences of asymmetry were calculated between affected individuals and controls per dataset, and effect sizes were meta-analyzed across datasets. Small average case-control differences were observed for thickness asymmetries of the rostral anterior cingulate and the middle temporal gyrus, both driven by thinner left-hemispheric cortices in schizophrenia. Analyses of these asymmetries with respect to the use of antipsychotic medication and other clinical variables did not show any significant associations. Assessment of age- and sex-specific effects revealed a stronger average leftward asymmetry of pallidum volume between older cases and controls. Case-control differences in a multivariate context were assessed in a subset of the data (N = 2,029), which revealed that 7% of the variance across all structural asymmetries was explained by case-control status. Subtle case-control differences of brain macrostructural asymmetry may reflect differences at the molecular, cytoarchitectonic, or circuit levels that have functional relevance for the disorder. Reduced left middle temporal cortical thickness is consistent with altered left-hemisphere language network organization in schizophrenia.

21. Dependence of microwave absorbing property on ferrite volume fraction in MnZn ferrite-rubber composites

Abstract

The effective complex permeability and permittivity spectra in composites with various ferrite volume fractions were calculated using the Bruggeman effective medium theory. The matching conditions for the maximum microwave absorption were determined by substituting the complex permeability and permittivity in the equation for the impedance matching condition. The minimum reflection loss increases from -5 to -40 dB as the ferrite volume fraction increases for [v.sub.zf] < 0.26, where single dip of minimum reflection loss was observed. However, two matching conditions were observed for [v.sub.f] [greater than or equal to] 0.26, and two minimum reflection losses shown to be about -40 dB. The results indicate that a microwave absorber with reflection loss of about -40 dB can be designed by controlling the ferrite volume fraction in MnZn ferrite-rubber composites in the frequency range 0.8-12 GHz.

Abstract

Presented in this paper is a tool path generation procedure for three-dimensional profile curve machining on three-axis machines, which is essential for making dies of automotive press panels. While sculptured surface machining has received a significant amount of attention, there has been very little work on profile curve machining. The most distinctive feature of profile curve machining is that the machine operator determines the exact cutter radius at the stage of numerical control (NC) machining. For this reason, profile curve machining usually makes use of the cutter radius compensation functionality of an NC controller. In this paper, four technological requirements for the profile curve machining are identified: (1) maintaining a constant machining width; (2) avoiding controller alarms; (3) avoiding unbalanced cutter wear; and (4) retaining down-milling. Abstract

A study of the interaction between gel strength and high hydrostatic pressure (HHP) in Alaskan pollock surimi and Pacific whiting using torsions reveals HHP to enhance strain values for given temperature and pressure combination. HHP, which causes food rheological alterations, influences enzymatic functions while reducing microorganisms. HHP affects gel strength more than heat-set controls.

Abstract

Torsion test, salt-soluble protein extractability and Ca++-ATPase activity were used to examine protein denaturation of frozen Pacific whiting Merluccius productus fillets stored at varying low temperature over a 10-mo period. Variation in the quality of fillets stored at lower temperatures were much less than those stored at -8 degree celsius. No major advantage over fillets stored at -20 degrees celsius, was observed for those stored at -34 and -50 degrees celsius.

Abstract

The Ampelmann system is an active motion compensation system that can compensate the vessel motions in six degrees of freedom. The Ampelmann, together with the attached gangway, makes it possible for people to transfer between a vessel and offshore structures safely. The Ampelmann system has been designed in the early stages based on a set of static load cases. For design and analysis related to fatigue life estimation, system operability and control improvements, it is necessary to obtain more insights in the structural dynamics of the system. With the earliest system approaching a lifetime of 10 years, fatigue lifetime is of high importance and forms the main goal of this study The main function of the Ampelmann gangway is to serve as a bridge for people transfer between the ship, where the Ampelmann system is placed on board, and the offshore structure. Ampelann utilize various types of gangway in the market. This will be focus primarily on the most widely used gangway (G25), which consist of a Main Boom and a telescoping T-boom. The transfer deck in which gangway is attached to is assumed to be rigid. To asses G25 for fatigue, first dynamic behavior under certain loading must be determined. In general the gangway in operation experiences various load conditions, which have to be taken into account. However, in this only the load condition under steady wind velocity, base excitation and rotation of the gangway under applied torque is considered. The T-boom cross section, dimension as well as weight are different to the main boom. The gangway as a whole consist of three parts: the main boom, overlapping T-boom in the main boom and the T-boom. The gangway is modeled as a step or segmented Euler-Bernoulli beam to describe the dynamic characteristic. The dynamic characteristics are the mode shape and natural frequency in its vibrating plane.
