Superconducting Microstrip Single Photon Detectors (SMSPDs) are increasingly attracting the interest of the scientific community as a new platform for large area detectors with unprecedented advantaged in terms of fabrication. However, while their operativity at the telecommunication wavelength was achieved, working beyond 1.55 um is challenging. Here, we experimentally demonstrate single-photon operation of NbRe microstrips at wavelengths of 1.55 and 2 um. The devices are structured as pairs of parallel microstrips with widths ranging from 1.4 to 2.2 um and lengths from 5 to 10 um. This innovative design may assure large sensitive areas, without affecting the kinetic inductance, namely the time performance of the detectors. The results are discussed in the framework of the hot-spot two-temperature model.

This study evaluates the accessibility of public EV charging stations in the Washington metropolitan area using a comprehensive measure that accounts for both destination-based and en route charging opportunities. By incorporating the full spectrum of daily travel patterns into the accessibility evaluation, our methodology offers a more realistic measure of charging opportunities than destination-based methods that prioritize proximity to residential locations. Results from spatial autocorrelation analysis indicate that conventional accessibility assessments often overestimate the availability of infrastructure in central urban areas and underestimate it in peripheral commuting zones, potentially leading to misallocated resources. By highlighting significant clusters of high-access and low-access areas, our approach identifies spatial inequalities in infrastructure distribution and provides insights into areas requiring targeted interventions. This study underscores the importance of incorporating daily mobility patterns into urban planning to ensure equitable access to EV charging infrastructure and suggests a framework that other regions could adopt to enhance sustainable transportation networks and support equitable urban development.

Probabilistic Cellular Automata are a generalization of Cellular Automata. Despite their simple definition, they exhibit fascinating and complex behaviours. The stationary behaviour of these models changes when model parameters are varied, making the study of their phase diagrams particularly interesting. The block approximation method, also known in this context as the local structure approach, is a powerful tool for studying the main features of these diagrams, improving upon Mean Field results. This work considers systems with multiple stationary states, aiming to understand how their interactions give rise to the structure of the phase diagram. Additionally, it shows how a simple algorithmic implementation of the block approximation allows for the effective study of the phase diagram even in the presence of several absorbing states.

Over the last three to five years, it has become possible to generate machine learning synthetic data for healthcare-related uses. However, concerns have been raised about potential negative factors associated with the possibilities of artificial dataset generation. These include the potential misuse of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in fields such as cybercrime, the use of deepfakes and fake news to deceive or manipulate, and displacement of human jobs across various market sectors. Here, we consider both current and future positive advances and possibilities with synthetic datasets. Synthetic data offers significant benefits, particularly in data privacy, research, in balancing datasets and reducing bias in machine learning models. Generative AI is an artificial intelligence genre capable of creating text, images, video or other data using generative models. The recent explosion of interest in GenAI was heralded by the invention and speedy move to use of large language models (LLM). These computational models are able to achieve general-purpose language generation and other natural language processing tasks and are based on transformer architectures, which made an evolutionary leap from previous neural network architectures. Fuelled by the advent of improved GenAI techniques and wide scale usage, this is surely the time to consider how synthetic data can be used to advance infectious disease research. In this commentary we aim to create an overview of the current and future position of synthetic data in infectious disease research.

We study the Fokker-Planck diffusion equation with diffusion coefficient depending periodically on the space variable. Inside a periodic array of inclusions the diffusion coefficient is reduced by a factor called the diffusion magnitude. We find the upscaled equations obtained by taking both the degeneration and the homogenization limits in which the diffusion magnitude and the scale of the periodicity tends, respectively, to zero. Different behaviors, classified as pure diffusion, diffusion with mass deposition, and absence of diffusion, are found depending on the order in which the two limits are taken and on the ratio between the size of the inclusions and the scale of the periodicity.

Inspired by experimental evidence collected when processing thin films from ternary solutions made of two solutes, typically polymers, and one solvent, we computationally study the morphology formation of domains obtained in three-state systems using both a lattice model and a continuum counterpart. The lattice-based approach relies on the Blume-Capel nearest neighbor model with bulk conservative Kawasaki dynamics, whereas as continuum system we consider a coupled system of evolution equations that is derived as hydrodynamic limit when replacing the nearest neighbor interaction in the lattice case by a suitable Kac potential. We explore how the obtained morphology depends on the solvent content in the mixture. In particular, we study how these scenarios change when the solvent is allowed to evaporate.

The process of clearing areas, namely demining, starts by assessing and prioritizing potential hazardous areas (i.e., desk assessment) to go under thorough investigation of experts, who confirm the risk and proceed with the mines clearance operations. This paper presents Desk-AId that supports the desk assessment phase by estimating landmine risks using geospatial data and socioeconomic information. Desk-AId uses a Geospatial AI approach specialized to landmines. The approach includes mixed data sampling strategies and context-enrichment by historical conflicts and key multi-domain facilities (e.g., buildings, roads, health sites). The proposed system addresses the issue of having only ground-truth for confirmed hazardous areas by implementing a new hard-negative data sampling strategy, where negative points are sampled in the vicinity of hazardous areas. Experiments validate Desk-Aid in two domains for landmine risk assessment: 1) country-wide, and 2) uncharted study areas). The proposed approach increases the estimation accuracies up to 92%, for different classification models such as RandomForest (RF), Feedforward Neural Networks (FNN), and Graph Neural Networks (GNN).

We pose the problem of metastability for a three--state spin system with conservative dynamics. We consider the Blume--Capel model with the Kawasaki dynamics, we prove that, in a particular region of the parameter plane, the metastable state is the unique homogeneous minus state, and we estimate the exit time. To achieve our goal we have to solve several variational problems in the configuration space which result to be particularly involved, due to complicated structure of the trajectories. They key ingredient is the control of the energy differences between the configurations crossed when a spin is transported from the boundary to an internal site of the lattice through a completely arbitrary mixture of the three--state spin species. To master these mechanisms we have introduced a new approach based on the transport of spins along nearest neighbor connected regions of the lattice with constant spin configuration. This novel approach goes beyond the Blume--Capel model and can be used for the study of more general multi--state spin models.

Explaining outliers occurrence and mechanism of their occurrence can be extremely important in a variety of domains. Malfunctions, frauds, threats, in addition to being correctly identified, oftentimes need a valid explanation in order to effectively perform actionable counteracts. The ever more widespread use of sophisticated Machine Learning approach to identify anomalies make such explanations more challenging. We present the Decision Tree Outlier Regressor (DTOR), a technique for producing rule-based explanations for individual data points by estimating anomaly scores generated by an anomaly detection model. This is accomplished by first applying a Decision Tree Regressor, which computes the estimation score, and then extracting the relative path associated with the data point score. Our results demonstrate the robustness of DTOR even in datasets with a large number of features. Additionally, in contrast to other rule-based approaches, the generated rules are consistently satisfied by the points to be explained. Furthermore, our evaluation metrics indicate comparable performance to Anchors in outlier explanation tasks, with reduced execution time.

The AI-SPRINT project, launched in 2021 and funded by the European Commission, focuses on the development and implementation of AI applications across the computing continuum. This continuum ensures the coherent integration of computational resources and services from centralized data centers to edge devices, facilitating efficient and adaptive computation and application delivery. AI-SPRINT has achieved significant scientific advances, including streamlined processes, improved efficiency, and the ability to operate in real time, as evidenced by three practical use cases. This paper provides an in-depth examination of these applications -- Personalized Healthcare, Maintenance and Inspection, and Farming 4.0 -- highlighting their practical implementation and the objectives achieved with the integration of AI-SPRINT technologies. We analyze how the proposed toolchain effectively addresses a range of challenges and refines processes, discussing its relevance and impact in multiple domains. After a comprehensive overview of the main AI-SPRINT tools used in these scenarios, the paper summarizes of the findings and key lessons learned.

Identifying superconducting materials with spin-polarized Cooper pairs is an important objective both for exploration of new fundamental physics and for cryogenic applications in spintronics and quantum sensing. We here compute the critical temperature $T_c$ of the superconducting transition in a bilayer comprised of a superconductor with an intrinsic spin-triplet order parameter and a ferromagnet. We determine how $T_c$ varies both with the thickness of the ferromagnet and its magnetization direction. We show that both the orbital and spin part of the triplet superconducting order parameter leave clear signatures in $T_c$ which do not appear in a bilayer of a conventional s-wave superconductor and a ferromagnet. In particular, the dependence of $T_c$ on these variables changes depending on whether or not the superconducting order parameter features Andreev bound-states and also changes qualitatively when the magnetization is rotated in the plane of the ferromagnetic film. Measurements of $T_c$ in such bilayers are therefore useful to identify the pairing symmetry of intrinsic triplet superconductors.

The application of a gate voltage to control the superconducting current flowing through a nanoscale superconducting constriction, named as gate-controlled supercurrent (GCS), has raised great interest for fundamental and technological reasons. To gain a deeper understanding of this effect and develop superconducting technologies based on it, the material and physical parameters crucial for GCS must be identified. Top-down fabrication protocols should be also optimized to increase device scalability, although studies suggest that top-down fabricated devices are more resilient to show GCS. Here, we investigate gated superconducting nanobridges made with a top-down fabrication process from thin films of the non-centrosymmetric superconductor NbRe. Unlike other devices previously reported, our NbRe devices systematically exhibit GCS, when made in specific conditions, which paves the way for higher device scalability. Our results also suggest that surface properties of NbRe nanobridges and their modification during fabrication are key for GCS., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures

Here we demonstrate superconducting Dayem-bridge weak-links made of different stoichiometric compositions of NbRe. Our devices possess a relatively high critical temperature, normal-state resistance, and kinetic inductance. In particular, the high kinetic inductance makes this material a good alternative to more conventional niobium-based superconductors (e.g., NbN or NbTiN) for the realization of superinductors and high-quality factor resonators, whereas the high normal-state resistance yields a large output voltage in superconducting switches and logic elements realized upon this compound. Moreover, out-of-plane critical magnetic fields exceeding 2 T ensure that possible applications requiring high magnetic fields can also be envisaged. We study the periodic homogenization of a reaction-diffusion problem with large nonlinear drift and Robin boundary condition posed in an unbounded perforated domain. The nonlinear problem is associated with the hydrodynamic limit of a totally asymmetric simple exclusion process (TASEP) governing a population of interacting particles crossing a domain with obstacle. We are interested in deriving rigorously the upscaled model equations and the corresponding effective coefficients for the case when the microscopic dynamics are linked to a particular choice of characteristic length and time scales that lead to an exploding nonlinear drift. The main mathematical difficulty lies in proving the two-scale compactness and strong convergence results needed for the passage to the homogenization limit. To cope with the situation, we use the concept of two-scale compactness with drift, which is similar to the more classical two-scale compactness result but it is defined now in moving coordinates. We provide as well a strong convergence result for the corrector function, starting this way the search for the order of the convergence rate of the homogenization process for our target nonlinear drift problem., Comment: 37 pages
