Abstract

Machine learning (ML) methods are proliferating in scientific research. However, the adoption of these methods has been accompanied by failures of validity, reproducibility, and generalizability. These failures can hinder scientific progress, lead to false consensus around invalid claims, and undermine the credibility of ML-based science. ML methods are often applied and fail in similar ways across disciplines. Motivated by this observation, our goal is to provide clear reporting standards for ML-based science. Drawing from an extensive review of past literature, we present the REFORMS checklist ($\textbf{Re}$porting Standards $\textbf{For}$ $\textbf{M}$achine Learning Based $\textbf{S}$cience). It consists of 32 questions and a paired set of guidelines. REFORMS was developed based on a consensus of 19 researchers across computer science, data science, mathematics, social sciences, and biomedical sciences. REFORMS can serve as a resource for researchers when designing and implementing a study, for referees when reviewing papers, and for journals when enforcing standards for transparency and reproducibility.

Abstract

Autonomous or self-driving networks are expected to provide a solution to the myriad of extremely demanding new applications in the Future Internet. The key to handle complexity is to perform tasks like network optimization and failure recovery with minimal human supervision. For this purpose, the community relies on the development of new Machine Learning (ML) models and techniques. However, ML can only be as good as the data it is fitted with. Datasets provided to the community as benchmarks for research purposes, which have a relevant impact in research findings and directions, are often assumed to be of good quality by default. In this paper, we show that relatively minor modifications on the same benchmark dataset (UGR'16, a flow-based real-traffic dataset for anomaly detection) cause significantly more impact on model performance than the specific ML technique considered. To understand this finding, we contribute a methodology to investigate the root causes for those differences, and to assess the quality of the data labelling. Our findings illustrate the need to devote more attention into (automatic) data quality assessment and optimization techniques in the context of autonomous networks.

Abstract

AimsTo assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the health condition of people ≥75 years of age and on their family caregivers in Spain.DesignMulticentric, mixed method concurrent study.MethodsThis work, which will be conducted within the primary care setting in 11 administrative regions of Spain, will include three coordinated studies with different methodologies. The first is a population-based cohort study that will use real-life data to analyze the rates and evolution of health needs, care provision, and services utilization before, during, and after the pandemic. The second is a prospective cohort study with 18 months of follow-up that will evaluate the impact of COVID-19 disease on mortality, frailty, functional and cognitive capacity, and quality of life of the participants. Finally, the third will be a qualitative study with a critical social approach to understand and interpret the social, political, and economic dimensions associated with the use of health services during the pandemic. We have followed the SPIRIT Checklist to address trial protocol and related documents. This research is being funded by the Instituto de Salud Carlos III since 2021 and was approved by its ethics committee (June 2022).DiscussionThe study findings will reveal the long-term impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the older adults and their caregivers. 26. Socio-Educational Factors to Promote Educational Inclusion in Higher Education. A Question of Student Achievement

Abstract

Psychosocial factors have a direct impact on the academic achievement of university students, especially when they belong to diverse human groups. This article shows the results of a project developed in a Colombian university with the aim of finding out the identity traits, situations of discrimination, and risk factors faced by students belonging to diverse groups. The research is qualitative, exploratory, and descriptive, approached from a social and educational perspective. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 15 students. The high level of identification with the group is visible in students with affective-sexual diversity, gender identity and ethnic-cultural diversity, considered to be the most discriminated-against populations. Risks in the labor, educational, social, and family spheres are the most frequent.

27. Treatment and Evaluation of Game as a Didactic Resource in the Communication of Teachers through Social Networks

Abstract

This research presents an analysis of the value given to the game as an educational resource on social networks. The purpose of this study is to analyze the discourse on Twitter of the different educational agents (teachers and other educational professionals) to know the value given to the use of this tool and how the social network is an educational form of communication and interaction. From a qualitative methodology, a descriptive-interpretative study of the information on didactic/play strategies present in social networks is approached. The analysis is performed by the Nvivo12 software through matrices and content analysis. The results show that the game is mentioned within the speech on Twitter where it is alluded to its importance, value, application, etc. From an educational perspective, working in the classroom with the use of social networks provides some significant advantages; these networks offer interactive and effective teaching and learning tools. In addition, the integration of tools and applications. It is concluded that Twitter is an educational and formative way and where the value attributed to the game as a didactic resource is significant.

36. Students' Recalled Desirability of Using Game-Based Student Response Systems (GSRSS): A User Experience (UX) Perspective

Abstract

GSRSs are known to positively influence students' learning behaviors and in-class participation. Kahoot! is one of the GSRSs widely adopted in the higher education (HE) sector and also widely studied in the HE marketing literature. Whilst varied theories have been applied to study the pedagogical value of Kahoot!, the user experience (UX) theory is seldom considered. Taking the first step to address this gap, the present study seeks to explore students' UX desirability of using Kahoot!, the subsequent behavioral effects, and the moderating effect of students' orientation to study. The empirical setting includes an online survey administered to 47 marketing students at a regional university in the UK. The findings suggest that: i) students recalled stronger positive desirability than negative desirability, ii) positive desirability has a significant positive effect on perceived usefulness and motivation to attend a class, while negative desirability does not; and iii) motivation to attend is lower for students with the external orientation to study. These insights contribute to the extant literature of GSRSs and UX, and also offer practical implications on how to use GSRSs to motivate students' in-class learning and attendance.

37. Analysis of Courses and Teacher Training Programs on Playful Methodology in Andalusia (Spain)

Abstract

In this study we analyzed the primary teaching and training experiences that observe play as a didactic resource to facilitate learning, highlighting fundamental elements and characteristics. A descriptive analysis of the different programs and contents with respect to playful methodology proposed by the Ministry of Education of Andalusian Government (Spain) is presented. The purpose of this type of descriptive idiographic research is to define, classify, catalogue, or characterize the experiences of innovation and projects on ludic methodology. The results show a total of 217 experiences and programs that deal with the use of playful methodology in the classroom. The results conclude that there are training resources interested and involved in the training of teachers in relation to play as a didactic resource. This type of training is carried out outside the university environment and has the characteristics of permanent training.

38. Use of Twitter as an Educational Resource. Analysis of Concepts of Active and Trainee Teachers

Abstract

The use of innovative tools is a key element in the improvement of the educational process, and consequently, the use of social networks as a means of training to improve not only the learning of students, but also to improve the expectations of the teacher. Therefore, in this research we tried to investigate the incidence of social networks as facilitators of resources and didactic/playful experiences. Starting from a qualitative methodology, a descriptive-interpretative study of the information from 31 interviews with both primary education teachers and future teachers who were in training and in their last year of initial training was approached. The results indicate that the interviewees confirmed the great usefulness of social networks as educational resources and for teacher communication. The possibilities of social networks within the educational field are overly broad. They become a way of interaction between teacher and student, encourage dialogue, share didactic resources, favor collaborative learning, and develop communication skills in all aspects. In short, these are results that have a special incidence and impact on the field and social development, since we are referring fundamentally to the improvements that are produced in interpersonal relations.
