Inflammation can have social consequences, which may be relevant to inflammation's link with depression. The current study tests whether a typhoid vaccine increases feelings of social disconnection and avoidance behavior.In two full-day visits at least three weeks apart, 172 postmenopausal breast cancer survivors (Stage I-IIIA) each received a typhoid capsular polysaccharide vaccination and a saline placebo injection in a random sequence. Blood was drawn prior to the injection, as well as every 90 min thereafter for 8 h to assess the inflammatory response (interleukin-6, IL-6; interleukin-1 receptor antagonist, IL-1Ra). At both visits, women completed the Social Connection Scale at 0 and 8.5 h post-vaccination as well as implicit and explicit social avoidance tasks at 7 h post-vaccination.The typhoid vaccine triggered rises in both inflammatory markers (ps 0.01), but it did not impact feelings of social connection (p = .32), or performance on the implicit (p = .34) or explicit tasks (p = .37). Inflammatory rises did not predict feelings of social connection (ps 0.64) or performance on explicit (ps 0.73) or implicit (ps 0.88) social avoidance tasks.Milder inflammatory stimuli may not affect social processes. Higher levels of inflammation or, relatedly, more sickness symptoms may be necessary to recapitulate prior findings of social avoidance.

OBJECTIVE: Colorectal cancer poses a significant threat to both psychological and physical health. This study examined relationships between anxiety and depressive symptoms with pain, fatigue, and inflammation among colorectal patients. METHODS: Colorectal cancer patients (n = 88, stages 0-IV) completed a laboratory-based study visit before undergoing adjuvant cancer treatment. Patients completed questionnaires assessing depressive, anxiety, pain, and fatigue symptoms. A blood sample was also collected to measure c-reactive protein (CRP). Analyses controlled for age, sex, cancer stage, body mass index (BMI), and menopause status. RESULTS: Multiple linear regression analyses showed colorectal patients with higher depressive and anxiety symptoms had greater pain, fatigue, and CRP (ps < 0.03). Approximately one-third of patients with clinically significant depressive (CESD >16) and anxiety symptoms (BAI >16) also had clinically-elevated levels of CRP (>3 mg/L) (ps = 0.02). CONCLUSION: These results extend findings from other cancer subgroups showing heightened symptom burden among patients with depression and anxiety. They also highlight the detrimental role that elevated anxiety and depressive symptoms may play in the physical and biological side effects associated with colorectal cancer.

PURPOSE: To investigate breast cancer survivors’ inflammatory responses to typhoid vaccine as a window into their innate immune response to novel pathogens. METHODS: This double-blind crossover trial randomized 158 breast cancer survivors to either the vaccine/saline placebo or the placebo/vaccine sequence. The relative contributions of age, cardiorespiratory fitness (VO(2peak)), type of cancer treatment, central obesity, and depression to interleukin (IL)-6, IL-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1Ra), and WBC vaccine responses were assessed pre-injection and 1.5, 3, 4.5, 6, and 7.5 hours post-injection. According to extensive evidence, we-talk—couples’ use of first-person, plural pronouns—predicts better relationship quality and well-being. However, prior work has not distinguished we-talk by its context, which varies widely across studies. Also, little is known about we-talk’s consistency over time. To assess the stability and correlates of we-talk in private versus conversational contexts, 43 married couples’ language was captured during a marital problem discussion and in each partner’s privately recorded thoughts before and after conflict. Participants were asked to describe any current thoughts and feelings in the baseline thought-listing and to focus on their reaction to the conflict itself in the post-conflict sample. Couples repeated this protocol at a second study visit, approximately 1 month later. We-talk in baseline and post-conflict thought-listings was largely uncorrelated with we-talk during conflict discussions, but each form of we-talk was consistent between the two study visits. Their correlates were also distinct: more we-talk during conflict was associated with less hostility during conflict, whereas more baseline we-talk predicted greater closeness in both partners, as well as lower vocally encoded arousal and more positive emotion word use in partners after conflict. These novel data reveal that we-talk can be meaningfully distinguished by its context—whether language is sampled from private thoughts or marital discussions, and whether the study procedure requests relationship talk. Taken together, these variants of we-talk may have unique implications for relationship function and well-being.

Background Sarcopenia may hasten the risk of mortality in women with breast cancer. Long-chain omega-3 (n-3) polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCn-3PUFAs) may favor muscle mass which, in turn, could enhance resilience of cancer patients toward cancer treatment. Objectives The objective of this study was to measure the relation of erythrocyte LCn-3PUFA concentrations with lean mass, grip strength, and postprandial energy metabolism in women with newly diagnosed breast cancer. Methods This cross-sectional analysis evaluated women (n = 150) ages 65 y and younger who were recently diagnosed with breast cancer (stages I-III). Erythrocyte LCn-3PUFA composition was measured using GC. Body composition was measured by DXA. Grip strength was assessed at the same visit. Postprandial energy metabolism was measured for 7.5 h after the consumption of a high-calorie, high-saturated-fat test meal using indirect calorimetry. Associations of fatty acids with outcomes were analyzed using multiple linear regression models and linear mixed-effects models. Results The ω-3 index, a measurement of LCn-3PUFA status, was positively associated with appendicular lean mass (ALM)/BMI (β = 0.015, P = 0.01) and grip strength (β = 0.757, P = 0.04) after adjusting data for age and cancer stage. However, when cardiorespiratory fitness was also included in the analyses, these relations were no longer significant (P > 0.08). After a test meal, a higher ω-3 index was associated with a less steep rise in fat oxidation (P = 0.02) and a steeper decline in glucose (P = 0.01) when adjusting for age, BMI, cancer stage, and cardiorespiratory fitness. Conclusions The ω-3 index was positively associated with ALM/BMI and grip strength in women newly diagnosed with breast cancer and was associated with altered postprandial substrate metabolism. These findings warrant further studies to determine whether enriching the diet with LCn-3PUFAs during and after cancer treatments is causally linked with better muscle health and metabolic outcomes in breast cancer survivors.

Dyadic stress theories and research suggest that couples' negative communication patterns threaten immune and emotional health, leaving partners vulnerable to illness. Spouses' relationship perceptions can also color how they see and react to marital discussions. To identify pathways linking distressed marriages to poor health, this study examined how self-reported typical communication patterns augmented discussion-based behavioral effects on spouses' blister wound healing, emotions, and discussion evaluations.Married couples completed two 24-hour in-person visits where they had their blood drawn to measure baseline interleukin-6 (IL-6), received suction blister wounds, reported their typical communication patterns (demand/withdraw strategies, mutual discussion avoidance, mutual constructive communication), and engaged in marital discussions. Discussions were recorded and coded for positive and negative behaviors using the Rapid Marital Interaction Coding System (RMICS). Immediately after the discussions, spouses rated their emotions and evaluated the discussion tone and outcome. Wound healing was measured for 12 days.Couples who reported typically using more demand/withdraw or mutual avoidance patterns had higher baseline IL-6, slower wound healing, greater negative emotion, lower positive emotion, and poorer discussion evaluations. In contrast, couples reporting more mutual constructive patterns reported more favorable discussion evaluations. Additionally, couples' more negative and less positive patterns exacerbated behavioral effects: Spouses had wounds that healed more slowly, reported lower positive emotion, and evaluated the discussions less positively if their typical patterns and discussion-based behaviors were more negative and less positive.Couples' typical communication patterns-including how often they use demand/withdraw, mutual avoidance, and mutual constructive patterns-may color spouses' reactions to marital discussions, amplifying the biological, emotional, and relational impact. These findings help explain how distressed marriages take a toll on spouses' health.

Higher levels of omega-3 track with longer telomeres, lower inflammation, and blunted sympathetic and cardiovascular stress reactivity. Whether omega-3 supplementation alters the stress responsivity of telomerase, cortisol, and inflammation is unknown. This randomized, controlled trial examined the impact of omega-3 supplementation on cellular aging-related biomarkers following a laboratory speech stressor. In total, 138 sedentary, overweight, middle-aged participants (n = 93 women, n = 45 men) received either 2.5 g/d of omega-3, 1.25 g/d of omega-3, or a placebo for 4 months. Before and after the trial, participants underwent the Trier Social Stress Test. Saliva and blood samples were collected once before and repeatedly after the stressor to measure salivary cortisol, telomerase in peripheral blood lymphocytes, and serum anti-inflammatory (interleukin-10; IL-10) and pro-inflammatory (interleukin-6; IL-6, interleukin-12, tumor necrosis factor-alpha) cytokines. Adjusting for pre-supplementation reactivity, age, sagittal abdominal diameter, and sex, omega-3 supplementation altered telomerase (p = 0.05) and IL-10 (p = 0.05) stress reactivity; both supplementation groups were protected from the placebo group's 24% and 26% post-stress declines in the geometric means of telomerase and IL-10, respectively. Omega-3 also reduced overall cortisol (p = 0.03) and IL-6 (p = 0.03) throughout the stressor; the 2.5 g/d group had 19% and 33% lower overall cortisol levels and IL-6 geometric mean levels, respectively, compared to the placebo group. By lowering overall inflammation and cortisol levels during stress and boosting repair mechanisms during recovery, omega-3 may slow accelerated aging and reduce depression risk. Objective Breast cancer survivors live longer due to more advanced cancer treatments; however, cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading non-cancer cause of death in breast cancer survivors. Previous studies have shown that depression is associated with an increased risk of CVD development. This study investigated whether depressive symptoms or mood disorder history, either independently or in combination with cardiotoxic treatments, predicted older cardiopulmonary age using a novel index–the Age Based on Exercise Stress Test (ABEST)–among breast cancer survivors. Methods Breast cancer survivors (N = 80, ages 26–72, stage I-IIIA) were assessed an average of 53 days (SD = 26) post-surgery, but before adjuvant treatment, and again an average of 32 (SD = 6) months thereafter. At both visits, they reported depressive symptoms on the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D), completed the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-V, and engaged in an exercise stress test to obtain ABEST scores. Results Controlling for treatment type, age, education, trunk fat, antidepressant use, and time between visits, longitudinal analyses showed that breast cancer survivors with a mood disorder history had worsening ABEST scores over time, compared to their peers without this history (p = .046). Change in physical activity between Visits 1 and 2 did not mediate this relationship (95% CI: -0.16–0.51). Ancillary analyses provided some additional support for the primary finding, such that those with a mood disorder history trended toward greater decreases in Vo2max, although results were marginally non-significant (p = .095). There were no cross-sectional relationships between depressive symptoms or mood disorder history and ABEST scores (ps>.20). Treatment type did not modulate observed relationships (ps>.22). Conclusions Breast cancer survivors with a mood disorder history may experience faster cardiopulmonary aging compared to their peers without such a history, raising risk for CVD.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) vaccine candidates are being evaluated, with the goal of conferring immunity on the highest percentage of people who receive the vaccine as possible. It is noteworthy that vaccine efficacy depends not only on the vaccine but also on characteristics of the vaccinated. Over the past 30 years, a series of studies has documented the impact of psychological factors on the immune system’s vaccine response. Robust evidence has demonstrated that stress, depression, loneliness, and poor health behaviors can impair the immune system’s response to vaccines, and this effect may be greatest in vulnerable groups such as the elderly. Psychological factors are also implicated in the prevalence and severity of vaccine-related side effects. These findings have generalized across many vaccine types and therefore may be relevant to the SARS-CoV-2 vaccine. In this review, we discuss these psychological and behavioral risk factors for poor vaccine responses, their relevance to the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as targeted psychological and behavioral interventions to boost vaccine efficacy and reduce side effects. Recent data suggest these psychological and behavioral risk factors are highly prevalent during the COVID-19 pandemic, but intervention research suggests that psychological and behavioral interventions can increase vaccine efficacy.

Leptin influences inflammation and tumor growth and leptin signaling is often dysregulated among obese breast cancer survivors. This leads to a lack of satiety and, ultimately, risk for further weight gain. Breast cancer survivors also experience high rates of depression and anxiety, which are linked to leptin production. This study examined how a woman’s anxiety and depressive symptoms, in combination with their obesity status, were associated with leptin. Breast cancer survivors (n = 200, stages 0–IIIa) completed a baseline visit before treatment and two follow-up visits, 6 and 18 months after treatment ended. Women completed anxiety and depression measures, and blood samples provided leptin data at each visit. This study related fluctuations in a survivor’s own depression and anxiety (i.e., within-person effects), as well as average effects of depression and anxiety (i.e., between-person effects) to changes in leptin depending on BMI. Obese survivors’ leptin was significantly higher at visits when they had higher anxiety and depression symptoms than their own average level of symptoms. In contrast, within-person fluctuations in depression and anxiety were not related to leptin levels among non-obese survivors. No significant between-person effects of depression or anxiety on leptin emerged. Leptin is a critical risk factor for recurrence and further health consequences. Our findings highlight how psychological health influences leptin production among breast cancer survivors. These results highlight a biological pathway that may facilitate further weight gain and health risks among distressed, obese breast cancer survivors.

Objective Breast cancer survivors who experience psychological and physical symptoms after treatment have an increased risk for comorbid disease development, reduced quality of life, and premature mortality. Identifying factors that reduce or exacerbate their symptoms may enhance their long-term health and physical functioning. This study examined how survivors' marital status and marital satisfaction-key health determinants-impacted their psychological and physical health trajectories to understand when, and for whom, marriage offers health benefits. Methods Breast cancer survivors (n=209, stages 0-IIIC) completed a baseline visit before treatment and two follow-up visits 6 and 18 months after treatment ended. Women completed questionnaires assessing their marital status and satisfaction when applicable, as well as their psychological (depressive symptoms, stress) and physical (fatigue, pain) health at each visit. Results Married women-both those in satisfying and dissatisfying marriages-experienced improvements in their depressive symptoms, stress, and fatigue from pretreatment to 6- and 18-months posttreatment. Unmarried (i.e., single, divorced/separated, or widowed) women's depressive symptoms, stress, fatigue, and pain did not change over time, instead remaining elevated 6 and 18 months after treatment ended. Women in satisfying marriages also had fewer psychological and physical symptoms after treatment than those who were unmarried or in dissatisfying marriages. Conclusions Although marriage was associated with improved psychological and physical health, the gains were most notable when survivors' marriages were satisfying. Thus, the quality of survivors' marriages, rather than the marriage itself, provided the most benefits to their psychological and physical health. This article is protected by copyright. Individuals with social anxiety disorder show pronounced perceptual biases in social contexts, such as being hypervigilant to threat and discounting positive social cues. Parasympathetic activity influences responses to the social environment and may underlie these biases. This study examined the associations among social anxiety symptoms, heart rate variability (HRV), and vocal emotion recognition.Female undergraduate students (Women with more social anxiety symptoms had higher emotion recognition accuracy (A parasympathetically-mediated positivity bias may indicate or facilitate normal social functioning in women. Additionally, HRV during a symptom- or disorder-relevant task may predict task performance and reveal parasympathetic differences that are not found at baseline.

Brief everyday stressors can provoke cardiovascular, hormonal, and immune changes, and the magnitude and duration of these responses can vary considerably. Acute responses to daily stressors can differ widely among individuals experiencing the same stressor, and these physiological responses may not align with stress appraisals. This review highlights individual and dyadic factors that may heighten and prolong stress reactivity, along with their implications for health. We discuss depression, rumination, early life adversity, and social evaluation as individual-level factors and interpersonal stress processes and relationship quality as dyadic-level factors that may influence physiological stress responses. Heightened and prolonged stress reactivity can provide a gateway to the physiological dysregulation that underlies depression and chronic disease, which themselves alter stress reactivity—a vicious cycle. Interventions that may dampen physiological stress reactivity include yoga, meditation, health behaviors (diet, exercise, and sleep), and cognitive behavior therapy.

How the measurement of aging biomarkers in peripheral blood T-lymphocytes (PBTLs) is influenced by cell composition is unclear. Here, we collected peripheral blood and isolated CD3+ PBTLs from 117 healthy couples between the ages of 21 and 72. Each sample was profiled for Horvath epigenetic clock (DNAm), p16INK4a expression, cytomegalovirus (CMV) seropositivity and 74 mRNA markers of PBTL subtype, differentiation, immune checkpoints, and cytokine production. Correlations between individual aging biomarkers (DNAm or p16INK4a) and PBTL mRNAs were corrected for chronological age, sex, and couple. DNAm measurements correlated with CMV seropositivity as well as PBTL mRNAs indicative of effector function (CD8A, EOMES, TBX21, GZMB), poor proliferative capacity (KLRG1, CD57), differentiation (CD45RO, CD45RA), and immune checkpoints (PDCD1, TIGIT, LAG3, CD160, CD244). In contrast, only three PBTL mRNAs, CD28, CD244, and p14ARF, showed a significant association with p16INK4a. p16INK4a expression also showed a weaker association with immunosenescent PBTL subsets than DNAm in flow cytometry analyses. These data suggest that PBTL composition has a greater influence on DNAm than p16INK4a and link accelerated epigenetic aging to immunosenescent phenotypes.

PURPOSE: Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are used in cancer patients to manage treatment-related gastrointestinal symptoms and to prevent damage to the gastric mucosal lining during treatment. However, PPI use may contribute to cognitive problems. To compare PPI-users and non-users, breast cancer survivors reported cognitive problems in three studies. METHODS: In Study 1, breast cancer survivors (N=209; n=173 non-users, n=36 PPI-users; stages 0-IIIC) rated their cognitive function on the Kohli scale prior to cancer treatment, as well as one and two years later. In Study 2, women (N=200; n=169 non-users, n=31 PPI-users, stages 0-IIIa, M=11 months post-treatment) rated their cognitive function on the Kohli scale and BCPT checklist at three visits over a six-month period. In Study 3, participants (N=142; n=121 non-users, n=21 PPI-users; stages I-IIIa, M=4 years post-treatment) rated their cognitive function on the Kohli scale, BCPT checklist, and Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy cognitive scale (FACT-cog). RESULTS: In Study 1, PPI-users reported more severe concentration problems (p=0.039) but not memory problems (p=0.17) than non-users. In Study 2, PPI-users reported more severe concentration problems (p=0.022) than non-users, but not memory problems or symptoms on the BCPT (ps=0.11). Study 3’s PPI-users reported more severe memory problems (p=0.002), poorer overall cognitive function (p=0.006), lower quality of life related to cognitive problems (p=0.005), greater perceived cognitive impairment (p=0.013), and poorer cognitive abilities (p=0.046), but not more severe concentration problems (p=0.16), compared to non-users. CONCLUSIONS/IMPLICATIONS: PPI use may impair breast cancer survivors’ memory, concentration, and quality of life.

Objectives Social-emotional well-being is said to improve over adulthood, and studies of couples’ age differences have focused primarily on marital conflict. The way couples discuss their relationship story predicts marital quality among newlyweds and long-married couples alike, yet older and younger couples’ accounts have never been compared. The current study examined age differences in couples’ use of I/we-talk, emotion words, and immediacy (i.e., an urgent and unresolved style) during a relationship history discussion and their subsequent mood reactivity and appraisals. Method Married couples (N = 186 individuals within 93 couples, aged 22–77) recounted the story of their relationship then rated the discussion and their negative mood. Mediation models assessed the 3 linguistic features as parallel dyadic mediators linking couple age to negative mood responses and appraisals, controlling for global marital satisfaction, and baseline negative mood. Secondary analyses examined partners’ concordance in language use. Results Compared with younger couples, older couples used more positive than negative words and less immediacy which, in turn, was associated with husbands’ and wives’ less negative mood and more positive appraisals, only among husbands. Partners in older couples used more similar I/we-talk and emotional language, but these were unrelated to mood or appraisals. Discussion This study extends our understanding of how marital interactions differ by age in the understudied context of relationship history discussions, which may grow increasingly important for couples’ well-being with older age. Findings broadly align with social-emotional aging theories and uncover novel linguistic features relevant to the age-related emotional benefits of joint reminiscing.

The social-signal-transduction theory of depression asserts that people who experience ongoing interpersonal stressors and mount a greater inflammatory response to social stress are at higher risk for depression. The current study tested this theory in two adult samples. In Study 1, physically healthy adults ( N = 76) who reported more frequent interpersonal tension had heightened depressive symptoms at Visit 2, but only if they had greater inflammatory reactivity to a marital conflict at Visit 1. Similarly, in Study 2, depressive symptoms increased among lonelier and less socially supported breast-cancer survivors ( N = 79). This effect was most pronounced among participants with higher inflammatory reactivity to a social-evaluative stressor at Visit 1. In both studies, noninterpersonal stress did not interact with inflammatory reactivity to predict later depressive symptoms.

Reactivity to marital conflict has long been considered a critical mechanism linking marriage to health and well-being. Yet, developmental theories suggest conflict may subside with age. To compare mood and cardiovascular responses to two novel contexts—both partners’ upsetting personal experiences—with marital conflict reactivity, 107 couples ages 40-87 recounted a difficult personal memory to the partner, discussed a marital problem, and provided baseline and post-task mood, blood pressure (BP), and heart rate (HR). Although older adults relived their upsetting personal memories with less emotional intensity, negative mood and systolic BP increased most after this task. Compared to disagreement, the spouse’s upsetting memory triggered larger increases in negative mood, HR, and among older adults, SBP. Results suggest that both partners’ upsetting personal experiences are as relevant for mood and cardiovascular activity as marital conflict in aging couples, and that spousal distress may grow increasingly important with older age.

Marital conflict poses health risks that intensify as couples grow older. Dyadic stress theories suggest spouses’ marital satisfaction and communication patterns alter cardiovascular function, a key pathway from troubled relationships to poor health. Despite these risks, older spouses are more likely to have a strong couple identity where they think and talk in relational terms. This communication pattern, termed we-talk, is shown when spouses use words like “we” rather than “you” or “me,” reflecting that they are thinking about resolving conflict as a couple rather than as two separate individuals. We examined how both spouses’ relationship satisfaction and we-talk reduced conflict’s cardiovascular toll, and if the health benefits were greatest when both spouses were satisfied and used we-talk. Married couples (n=107) ages 40-87 engaged in a 20-minute conflict discussion while wearing heart rate monitors to assess heart rate variability (HRV), a measure of cardiac flexibility. Couples’ conflicts were transcribed to measure we-talk, or the proportion of first-person plural pronouns, such as we, us, and our. Results showed a person’s HRV was higher and thus healthier when both spouses were satisfied and their partner used we-talk more often. In contrast, HRV was lower and less healthy when neither or only one spouse was satisfied and their partner used we-talk less often. Thus, a couple’s mutually satisfying relationship along with a partner’s we-talk provided a health advantage during conflict. Talking in relational terms may help reduce conflict’s biological toll in aging couples, particularly when their relationships are satisfying.

Background Breast cancer survivors are prone to weakened gut barriers, allowing bacteria to migrate into the blood stream. Gut permeability fuels inflammation, which, among survivors, can elevate risk for comorbid disease development, cancer recurrence, and a poor quality of life; however, survivors’ satisfying relationships can provide health benefits. This longitudinal study used a conceptual model addressing how intimate relationships is associated with health through changes in gut permeability and inflammation. Method Breast cancer survivors (n=139, stages 0–IIIC) completed a baseline visit before treatment and two follow-up visits 6 and 18 months after treatment ended. Women who had an abnormal breast cancer test followed by a benign diagnosis completed visits within a comparable timeframe (noncancer patient controls; n=69). All women completed questionnaires assessing their relationship satisfaction and provided blood samples to assess two bacterial endotoxin biomarkers, lipopolysaccharide-binding protein (LBP) and soluble CD14 (sCD14), as well as C-reactive protein (CRP) and interleukin 6 (IL-6). Results Within-person multilevel mediation analyses showed that when a survivor’s relationship satisfaction was higher than usual, her own LBP and LBP/sCD14 were lower, which was associated with lower than her own average CRP and IL-6 (95% CIs [-0.0104, -0.0002]). IL-6 was also higher when older survivors, but not younger survivors, experienced higher than usual intestinal permeability (p=.001). These effects of satisfying relationships held after accounting for cancer-related and behavioral factors. Post-hoc analyses showed LBP, sCD14, and LBP/sCD14 were associated with CRP for the cancer survivors, but only LBP and LBP/sCD14 were linked to CRP among the noncancer control patients. Conclusion The gut environment is a new promising candidate for understanding a relationship’s long-term health impact, particularly among those with elevated health risks. Survivors may reap multiple physiological benefits from satisfying relationships.

BACKGROUND: Prior to treatment, breast cancer patients are less physically fit compared to peers; during cancer treatment, their fitness typically declines. Depressive symptoms are associated with reduced activity up to 5 years post-treatment, but research has not identified mechanisms linking depression and lower activity. The current study assessed relationships among breast cancer patients’ depression and perceived exertion during exercise as well as heart rate, an objective indicator of exertion. METHODS: Participants were 106 breast cancer patients, stages I–IIIA, who completed surgery but had not started adjuvant treatment. Heart rate and self-rated exertion, measured using the Borg Scale of Perceived Exertion, were assessed every 2 min during a graded exercise test. Depression was assessed using the CES-D and a structured clinical interview. RESULTS: Compared to women below the CES-D clinical cutoff, women with significant depressive symptoms reported steeper increases in exertion during the exercise test (p = .010) but had similar heart rates (p = .224) compared to women below the cutoff. Major depression history was unrelated to perceived exertion (ps > .224) and heart rate (ps > .200) during exercise. CONCLUSIONS: Women with currently elevated depressive symptoms experienced exercise as more difficult compared to women below the CES-D cutoff, but these self-perceptions did not reflect actual heart rate differences. Depression may make exercise feel more demanding, which could ultimately decrease patients’ likelihood of engaging in regular exercise. Results support the use of depression screening tools following breast cancer surgery to identify and intervene on individuals at risk for decreased physical activity during survivorship.

In both animals and humans, inflammatory stimuli - especially infections and endotoxin injections - cause "sickness behaviors," including lethargy, malaise, and low mood. An emerging line of research asserts that inflammation may provoke present-focused decision making and impulsivity. The current article assesses that claim in the context of the broader literature - including preclinical models and clinical interventions. This literature presents three challenges to purported inflammation-impulsivity link that have not been addressed to date: (1) the nebulous and imprecise definition of impulsivity; (2) reverse causality; and (3) a lack of causal evidence. These challenges point to ways in which future research designs can improve upon the extant literature to further explore the ostensible relationship between inflammation and impulsivity.

This article reviews evidence from several lines of work to describe how marriage and divorce can provoke health-relevant immune alterations, including ways that marital closeness can be perilous for health and divorce can be beneficial. The multiple stresses of a troubled relationship are depressogenic, and the development of a mood disorder sets the stage for psychological and biological vulnerability. Depression provides a central pathway to immune dysregulation, inflammation, and poor health; gender-related differences in depression and inflammation can heighten risk for women compared to men. Sleep and obesity can simultaneously feed off depression as they promote it. In addition, spousal similarities in health behaviors, gene expression, immune profiles and the gut microbiota offer new ways to consider the health advantages and risks of marriage and divorce, providing new perspectives on couples' interdependence, as well as new directions for research. BACKGROUND: Black breast cancer survivors have greater morbidity and mortality than White survivors. However, evidence comparing Black survivors’ psychological symptoms with their White counterparts has been mixed. Prior studies have not compared Black and White survivor’s distress-related symptom trajectories from pre- to post-treatment – the goal of the current study. METHODS: At three annual visits from shortly after diagnosis to 6 and 18 months post-treatment, 195 women (n=163 White; n=32 Black) reported their cancer-related distress (intrusive thoughts and avoidance), perceived stress, anxiety and depressive symptoms, fatigue, and pain. RESULTS: Adjusting for age, educational attainment, income, treatment type, stage at diagnosis, and physical comorbidities, Black and White breast cancer survivors had different trajectories of cancer-related distress (p=.004), intrusive thoughts about cancer diagnosis and treatment (p=.002), perceived stress (p=.04), emotional fatigue (p=.01), and vigor (p=.02). Specifically, among White women, these distress-related symptoms improved from diagnosis to 6 months post-treatment (ps.09). CONCLUSION: Longitudinal assessment of the same breast cancer survivors from diagnosis to early survivorship revealed that Black and White survivors had divergent trajectories of psychological distress symptoms that were not reliably evident at a single timepoint. Overall, White women reported less psychological distress from pre- to post-treatment, but Black women’s distress remained high from diagnosis to 18 months post-treatment. If left untreated, Black women’s high distress levels may contribute to their poorer health throughout survivorship.

Even healthy older adults experience gastrointestinal (GI) and neurological changes. In fact, the aging process of these two systems are interrelated due the extensive, multifaceted communication network connecting them, termed the gut-brain axis. Age-related modification of the GI environment can influence the bacterial species that survive and thrive there. Additionally, the lifestyle common to older adults in the West, including sedentariness, polypharmacy, and a poor diet, can compound the effect of aging on the GI tract, gut microbiota, and nervous system. Emerging animal and human findings suggest that GI organisms play a major role in gut-brain communication, ultimately shaping neurological aging trajectories by either helping to maintain nervous system function into late life or promoting pathology. Aging and age-related behaviors help to define the gut microbiota's composition and function, but, conversely, the gut microbiota may help to determine late-life functionality and may be harnessed to limit the prevalence of steep neurological decline and diseases. Focusing primarily on clinical research, this review first defines the gut-brain axis, then details age-related GI and nervous system changes, and discusses the impact of age-related lifestyle factors on the GI and nervous systems. The remainder of this review describes cutting-edge research that positions the gut microbiota as an arbiter of age-related neurological decline.

Leptin influences inflammation and tumor growth and leptin signaling is often dysregulated among obese breast cancer survivors. This leads to a lack of satiety and, ultimately, risk for further weight gain. Breast cancer survivors also experience high rates of depression and anxiety, which are linked to leptin production. This study examined how a woman's anxiety and depressive symptoms, in combination with their obesity status, were associated with leptin.Breast cancer survivors (n = 200, stages 0-IIIa) completed a baseline visit before treatment and two follow-up visits, 6 and 18 months after treatment ended. Women completed anxiety and depression measures, and blood samples provided leptin data at each visit. This study related fluctuations in a survivor's own depression and anxiety (i.e., within-person effects), as well as average effects of depression and anxiety (i.e., between-person effects) to changes in leptin depending on BMI.Obese survivors' leptin was significantly higher at visits when they had higher anxiety and depression symptoms than their own average level of symptoms. In contrast, within-person fluctuations in depression and anxiety were not related to leptin levels among non-obese survivors. No significant between-person effects of depression or anxiety on leptin emerged.Leptin is a critical risk factor for recurrence and further health consequences. Our findings highlight how psychological health influences leptin production among breast cancer survivors.These results highlight a biological pathway that may facilitate further weight gain and health risks among distressed, obese breast cancer survivors.

Background The Center for Disease Control (CDC) recently named childhood abuse histories as a public health risk. Clear links between abuse histories and inflammation exist. However, it remains unknown how abuse histories impact inflammatory trajectories throughout adulthood. Accordingly, this study assessed inflammatory trajectories across three visits among healthy adults with and without abuse histories. Method In this secondary analysis of data from a longitudinal observational study of cancer survivors and noncancer controls, 157 noncancer controls (Mage = 55.8, range = 32–83) completed the Childhood Experiences Questionnaire (CTQ), providing data on physical, emotional, and sexual abuse prior to age 18. Cytokines interleukin-6 (IL-6), interleukin 1-beta (IL-1β), and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) were collected at the baseline visit and two follow-up visits approximately one (M months = 11.52, SD = 4.10) and two years (M months = 23.79, SD = 4.40) later. To represent inflammatory changes, cytokine data at each visit were combined into a composite z-score. Covariates in all analyses included age, biological sex, race, income, body mass index, menopause status, psychological diagnosis history, and medical comorbidities. Results Compared to their nonabused peers, those who had experienced any type of abuse in childhood demonstrated steeper rises in inflammation across time. Inflammation rose more steeply for individuals with physical and emotional abuse histories compared to those without such histories. Conclusion Overall, these data suggest that childhood abuse histories may quicken age-related increases in inflammation, contributing to accelerated aging, morbidity, and early mortality. These findings provide mechanistic insight into why child abuse is a public health risk.

Humans and their gut bacteria have evolved multiple ways to communicate with and regulate one another. Psychological stress and depression can promote consumption of highly palatable foods, influencing which gut bacteria thrive. Additionally, stress and depression can reshape the gut bacteria’s composition through stress hormones, inflammation, and autonomic alterations. In turn, the gut bacteria release metabolites, toxins, and neurohormones that can alter eating behavior and mood. Some bacterial species may encourage dysregulated eating. The gut bacteria may also upregulate stress responsiveness and heighten the risk for depression, which probiotic supplementation may attenuate. This review focuses on human studies to address the bidirectional links among diet, stress, and the gut bacteria, and their impact on immune function and health.

Background Among breast cancer survivors, elevated inflammation has been linked to greater recurrence risk. Psychological processes, such as cancer-related distress, can pose threats to a survivor’s longevity and wellbeing. Although distress can heighten inflammation, little is known about how fluctuations in distress during and after treatment impact a woman’s own inflammation – the primary question of this study. Methods Breast cancer survivors (n = 165, stages 0-III) completed a baseline visit before treatment and two follow-up visits 6 and 18 months after. At each visit, women completed the Impact of Events Scale to assess cancer-related distress, and a blood sample was collected to measure proinflammatory cytokines IL-6, TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-8. This longitudinal study related fluctuations in survivor’s own cancer-related distress (i.e., within-person effects), as well as average effects of cancer-related distress between survivors (i.e., between-person effects) to inflammatory changes across visits. Results Women had elevated inflammation at visits where they expressed more cancer-related distress than what was typical. In contrast, the average cancer-related distress was not associated with inflammation. Conclusion Larger increases in a women’s cancer-related distress was linked with higher inflammation across visits. Comparing a survivor’s own cancer-related distress to her average levels may prove useful in identifying links between distress and inflammation.

Background Perceived stress can lead to dysregulated cortisol patterns, including blunted peaks and flatter slopes, which are associated with increased morbidity and mortality risks. Couples’ interdependence provides a prime opportunity for partners’ stress to disrupt a healthy cortisol pattern. This study examined how individuals’ own perceived stress and their partners’ perceived stress shape cortisol levels and slopes across the day, as well as how positive and negative behaviors during conflict discussions impact associations between stress and cortisol. Methods Both partners of a married couple (n = 43 couples, 86 individuals) completed a full day in-person visit. Each partner completed the Perceived Stress Scale, and all couples engaged in a 20-min marital problem discussion which was recorded and later coded for positive and negative behaviors using the Rapid Marital Interaction Coding System (RMICS). Partners also provided five salivary cortisol samples across the day, two samples before the conflict and three after the conflict. The dyadic design and analyses provided a way to account for the interdependent nature of married couples’ data, as well as to use the Actor-Partner Interdependence Model (APIM) to assess the mutual influence of spouses’ stress on cortisol. Results Individuals with more stressed partners had flatter cortisol slopes than individuals with less stressed partners, who showed steeper and thus healthier declines across the day. Individuals’ cortisol levels at the beginning of the day were similar regardless of their partners’ perceived stress, but individuals with more stressed partners had higher cortisol levels 30-min, 1 hr, and 4 hr after the conflict discussion than those with less stressed partners. Couples’ behavior during the conflict moderated the relationship between partner perceived stress and average cortisol; when couples used more negative and less positive behaviors, individuals with more stressed partners had higher average cortisol levels than those with less stressed partners. Conclusion On a day couples experienced conflict, having a partner with higher perceived stress is associated with dysregulated cortisol patterns, including higher levels and flatter slopes, but having a partner with lower perceived stress is linked to steeper and thus healthier cortisol declines. A partner’s stress was particularly consequential for one’s own cortisol when couples used more negative and fewer positive behaviors during a conflict discussion. This research adds to the growing literature on pathways connecting marital interactions to important biorhythms and health.

PURPOSE: A number of studies have shown that self-rated health reliably predicts mortality. This study assessed the impact of perseveration on self-rated health, physical functioning, and physical symptoms (pain, fatigue, breast cancer symptoms) among breast cancer patients. We hypothesized that cancer-related distress would serve as an intervening variable between both worry and rumination and self-rated health, physical functioning, and physical symptoms. METHODS: Women (N=124) who were approximately seven weeks post-surgery but pre adjuvant treatment completed the Impact of Events Scale, the Penn State Worry Questionnaire, and the Rumination Scale. They also rated their pain, fatigue, physical functioning, and self-rated health using the RAND-36 and breast cancer symptoms with the Breast Cancer Prevention Trial Symptom Checklist (BCPT). Covariates included body mass index, age, cancer stage, menopause status, and physical comorbidities. RESULTS: Worry was associated with higher cancer-related distress, which in turn predicted greater pain and breast cancer symptoms, poorer physical functioning, and lower self-rated health. Rumination also predicted greater cancer-related distress, which ultimately contributed to greater pain along with poorer physical functioning and self-rated health. Models with fatigue as an outcome were not significant. CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that perseveration can heighten cancer-related distress and subsequent perceptions of physical symptoms and health among breast cancer patients prior to adjuvant treatment. Perseveration early in the cancer trajectory can adversely increase the impact of a cancer diagnosis and treatment on functioning and quality of life.

Hostile conflict in marriage can increase risks for disease and mortality. Physiological synchrony between partners—e.g., the linkage between their autonomic fluctuations—appears to capture engagement, or an inability to disengage from an exchange, and thus may amplify the health risks of noxious interactions such as marital conflict. Prior work has not examined the unique health correlates of this physiological signature. To test associations between couples’ heart rate variability (HRV) synchrony during conflict and inflammation, 43 married couples engaged in a marital problem discussion while wearing heart monitors and provided four blood samples; they repeated this protocol at a second visit. When couples’ moment-to-moment HRV changes tracked more closely together during conflict, they had higher levels of three inflammatory markers (i.e., IL-6, stimulated TNF-α, and sVCAM-1) across the day. Stronger HRV synchrony during conflict also predicted greater negative affect reactivity. Synchrony varied within couples, and was related to situational factors rather than global relationship traits. These data highlight partners’ HRV linkage during conflict as a novel social-biological pathway to inflammation-related disease.

Social-emotional well-being is said to improve with age, but evidence for age differences in couples’ behavior and emotions—studied primarily during marital conflict—has been mixed. Characteristics of jointly told relationship stories predict marital quality among newlyweds and long-married couples alike, yet younger and older couples’ accounts have never been compared. To examine age differences in couples’ emotional responses and in their I/we-talk, emotion word use, and immediacy (i.e., self-focused, present-tense style), 42 married couples ages 22–77 recounted their relationship’s history then rated the discussion and their moods. Compared to younger couples, older couples used more we than I language, more positive than negative words, and less immediacy. Partners in older pairs shared more similar language patterns. In turn, lower immediacy mediated links between older age and less negative mood, and explained husbands’ more positive appraisals. Indeed, relationship accounts reveal novel insights into age differences in marriage and well-being.

Brazeau, Pfund, and Hill's (2020) comment on Kiecolt-Glaser's (2018) "Marriage, Divorce, and the Immune System" review article provides a thoughtful application of attachment theory to the relationship-health link. In addition to an attachment perspective, we offer multiple moderating and mediating mechanisms through which marriage contributes to health. A brief overview of relationship stress and coping models, as well as the importance of couples' interdependence, is discussed. We provide specific individual, couple, and developmental-contextual factors through an interdependence lens that help explain the health costs and benefits of relationships. OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship between blood levels of adiponectin and leptin with lean body and trunk adipose mass in women with and without type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). METHODS This cross-sectional study analyzed baseline data from five previous clinical studies involving postmenopausal women (n = 95). Body composition was assessed by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry, and appendicular lean mass was calculated based on body mass index (ALMBMI). Adipokines and cytokines were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Linear mixed-effect models with a random study effect were used to investigate the relationship between predictors (eg, adiponectin, leptin), outcomes (eg, ALMBMI, trunk adipose mass), and co-variables (T2DM status, age, interleukin-6, and C-reactive protein). RESULTS Postmenopausal women with T2DM had lower ALMBMI than those without T2DM. There was a positive association between blood adiponectin and ALMBMI in postmenopausal women without T2DM, but no association in those with T2DM. Blood leptin was negatively associated with ALMBMI for women regardless of T2DM diagnosis. Blood adiponectin was negatively associated, whereas blood leptin was positively associated with trunk adipose mass for the entire cohort. CONCLUSIONS T2DM status moderated the relationship between blood adiponectin and ALMBMI, where blood adiponectin was positively associated with ALMBMI in postmenopausal women without T2DM, but not those with T2DM. Dysregulated metabolism in T2DM may contribute to lower muscle mass in women with T2DM, but future research is required to elucidate this mechanistic link. The negative association between blood leptin and ALMBMI was a novel finding. Future studies will need to more clearly define the relationship between these variables.

BACKGROUND: Saturated-fat intake and endotoxemia can impair cognition. However, their acute impact on cognitive performance is unknown. OBJECTIVE: This study assessed the impact of 2 high-fat meals and endotoxemia on attention. METHODS: In this double-blind, randomized crossover trial, 51 women (n = 32 breast cancer survivors, n = 19 noncancer controls; mean ± SD age: 53 ± 8 y) completed the Continuous Performance Test (CPT) and had their blood drawn to assess endotoxemia markers LPS binding protein (LBP), soluble CD14 (sCD14), and the LBP to sCD14 ratio 1 h prior to eating either a high-saturated-fat meal or a high-oleic-sunflower-oil meal. Women again completed the CPT 5 h postmeal. At 1 to 4 wk later, women completed the same protocol but consumed the other meal. RESULTS: In adjusted models, women had more difficulty distinguishing target stimuli from distractors after consuming the high-saturated-fat meal than they did after the oleic-sunflower-oil meal (B = 4.44, SE = 1.88, P = 0.02). Women with higher baseline LBP had less consistent response times (B = 0.002, SE = 0.0008, P = 0.04). Those with higher LBP and LBP:sCD14 were less able to sustain their attention throughout the entire CPT, as reflected by their progressively slower (B = 0.002, SE = 0.0006, P = 0.003; and B = 2.43, SE = 0.090, P = 0.008, respectively) and more erratic (B = 0.003, SE = 0.0008, P

Losing a spouse can increase the risk for premature mortality, and declines in immune health are thought to play a role. Most of the supporting data have come from cross-sectional studies comparing already-bereaved individuals to matched controls, which provides valuable information about health disparities between groups but does not reveal health changes over time. Moreover, the health consequences of bereavement may be unique for dementia family caregivers, a large and growing segment of the population. The current study sought to evaluate the course of health around 52 dementia spousal caregivers' bereavement by capturing lymphocyte proliferation to Con A and PHA and self-rated health before and after spousal loss. To investigate the moderating role of the social environment, we examined associations between social ties and health trajectories before and after spousal loss. Using piecewise linear mixed models to allow for turning points in caregivers' trajectories, we found that, for the average caregiver, lymphocyte proliferation to both mitogens weakened as bereavement neared and continued to decline after the loss, but at a slower pace. In tandem, perceived health degraded as bereavement approached but rebounded thereafter. Further, we found that socially isolated caregivers showed marked declines in immune responses to Con A and PHA over time both before and after bereavement, whereas their socially connected counterparts had shallower declines to PHA and maintained a level immune response to Con A. In addition, socially isolated caregivers reported poorer health before and after bereavement compared to their counterparts, whose self-rated health declined as the loss neared but later recovered to exceed prior levels. These findings shed new light on the dynamics of immune function in response to spousal bereavement after dementia caregiving: longitudinal data reveal a pattern of health recovery following caregivers' loss, particularly among those with more robust social networks prior to bereavement.

OBJECTIVES: Cancer contributes to adverse changes in body composition that may increase risk of cardiometabolic diseases. Skeletal muscle is a main driver of cardiometabolic health. We hypothesize that higher intake of long chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCn3PUFAs) is associated with muscle health. This study evaluates whether LCn3PUFA exposure assessed in diet and in blood is associated with markers of muscle health in women with breast cancer. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional analysis evaluating LCn3PUFA exposure and markers of muscle health in women (N = 150) prior to treatment for breast cancer. Exposure to LCn3PUFAs was assessed by a diet history questionnaire (DHQ), a question specifically about supplement usage and biomarker of LCn3PUFAs in red blood cells (RBC). Body composition were measured at the same visit using dual x-ray absorptiometry. Linear regression models were used to test for associations. RESULTS: 13% (N = 19) of women reported using fish oil supplements (e.g., Supplement Users) and had significantly higher levels of RBC LCn3PUFAs than Supplement Non-users. In Supplement Non-users, there was a positive association between reported dietary exposure by DHQ and RBC LCn3PUFA levels. The n3 index (e.g., sum of RBC EPA + DHA) and DHA (22:6n3) were positively associated with appendicular lean mass/BMI. There were no significant correlations between RBC LCn3PUFAs with grip strength and or other measurements of body composition. CONCLUSIONS: As a biomarker of intake, RBC LCn3PUFAs are positively associated with appendicular lean mass, a measure of skeletal muscle mass. A future study should prospectively evaluate whether higher LCn3PUFA exposure (as measured in blood) is associated with maintaining better muscle health during and following cancer treatment. The Western diet, characterized by high intake of saturated fat, sugar, and salt, is associated with elevated inflammation and chronic disease risk. Few studies have investigated molecular mechanisms linking diet and inflammation; however, a small number of randomized controlled trials suggest that consuming an anti-inflammatory diet (i.e., a primarily plant-based diet rich in monounsaturated fat and lean protein) decreases proinflammatory gene expression. The current study investigated the association between everyday diet and proinflammatory gene expression, as well as the extent to which central adiposity and social involvement modulate risk. Participants were healthy middle-aged and older adults (N = 105) who completed a food frequency questionnaire and reported how many close social roles they have. Anthropometric measurements and blood samples also were collected; gene expression data were analyzed from LPS-stimulated peripheral blood mononuclear cells for interleukin (IL)-6, IL-1β, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α. The inflammatory potential of each participant’s diet was calculated using the Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII®). Participants with higher DII® scores, indicating a more proinflammatory diet, had greater IL-6 (b = −0.02, SE = 0.008, p = .01), IL-1β (b = −0.01, SE = 0.006, p = .03), and TNF-α (b = −0.01, SE = 0.005, p = .04) gene expression if they had a smaller sagittal abdominal diameter (SAD); effects were not seen among those with higher SADs. Social involvement served a protective role, such that participants with smaller SADs had greater IL-6 (b = 0.01, SE = 0.004, p = .049) and IL-1β (b = 0.01, SE = 0.003, p = .045) gene expression only if they had less social involvement; there was no effect of diet on gene expression among those who reported greater social participation. Results are the first to demonstrate a link between self-reported diet and proinflammatory gene expression. Importantly, the effect of diet on gene expression depended upon both body fat composition and social participation, both of which have previously been linked directly with proinflammatory gene expression and inflammation.

Objectives Marital support is central to couples’ relationships, yet support’s health implications can vary widely. Guided by attribution bias and aging theories, the current study examined whether age and marital satisfaction moderate the links of perceived and received spousal support to aging-related biomarkers. Methods Couples (N = 93, ages 22–77) rated marital satisfaction, overall perceived spousal support, and the quality of support received from their spouse in a lab-based discussion. Blood samples collected at baseline, immediately post-discussion, 3 hr post-discussion, and end-of-visit were assayed for proinflammatory cytokines tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α and interleukin (IL)-6, as well as insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-1. Results Consistent with predictions, less satisfied older couples who received lower-quality spousal support during their discussion had greater increases in TNF-α than those who received higher-quality support; highly satisfied couples of all ages and less satisfied younger couples did not show these inflammatory changes. Highly satisfied older couples with greater perceived spousal support had lower TNF-α across the day and higher IGF-1. Discussion Marital satisfaction and age may shape spousal support’s significance for healthy aging. Rose-colored lenses worn only in the most satisfying marriages may protect couples from the possible health risks of low-quality received support and enhance potential benefits of perceived support. For better or worse, these health implications may grow with older age.

The gut microbiota plays a role in a wide range of diseases and disorders, with low microbial diversity and richness emerging as notable risk factors. This longitudinal study addressed the impact of marital quality (assessed by the Couples Satisfaction Index) on changes in depressive symptoms, and gut diversity, richness, and permeability. On two occasions an average of 90 days apart, 162 people provided stool and blood samples, and completed questionnaires. Depressive symptoms, assessed by the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D), increased from visit 1 to visit 2 in those with clinically significant relationship problems, in contrast to the lack of change among their more satisfied counterparts. These changes in depression were consequential: the gut microbiota’s diversity and richness decreased in tandem with the increase in depressive symptoms. Lower relationship satisfaction also foreshadowed increases in lipopolysaccharide binding protein from visit 1 to visit 2, reflecting greater translocation of bacterial endotoxin from the gut to blood circulation, a process that fuels inflammation. Lower diversity and richness provide a pathway from depressive symptoms and marital distress to subsequent health risk.
