The reasons for these differences are unknown and difficult to tease apart in clinical populations. If OSA could be temporarily induced in healthy men and women, the causes of some of these differences could be investigated. Nasal blocking has been used to induce OSA in healthy men but its effect in women has not been reported.Patients and Methods: A total of 14 healthy individuals (10 women) underwent in-laboratory diagnostic sleep studies on two occasions separated by a week. On one occasion, the nasal passages were blocked, whereas on the other occasion, participants slept naturally. In both conditions, a full-face mask was used to monitor respiratory events. Participants’ self-reported sleepiness, mood and performance on a motor learning task were assessed in the evening and morning of both sleep studies. Furthermore, endothelial function and self-reported sleep quality were assessed in the morning following each study.Results: Nasal blockage induced OSA in healthy young (age=22± 3 years) and slim (BMI=22.2± 3.2 kg/m2) women (control AHI=2.0± 2.6, blocked AHI=33.1± 36.7 events/hr, p=0.02). One night of OSA was associated with poorer self-reported sleep quality (p< 0.001) and increased self-reported snoring (p< 0.04), choking and gasping during sleep (p< 0.001) but was not associated with alterations in mood, neurocognitive or endothelial function on the following morning.Conclusion: Nasal blockage induces OSA in healthy, young, and normal weight women. Abstract

The origin of high-energy cosmic rays, atomic nuclei that continuously impact Earth's atmosphere, has been a mystery for over a century. Due to deflection in interstellar magnetic fields, cosmic rays from the Milky Way arrive at Earth from random directions. However, near their sources and during propagation, cosmic rays interact with matter and produce high-energy neutrinos. We search for neutrino emission using machine learning techniques applied to ten years of data from the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. We identify neutrino emission from the Galactic plane at the 4.5$\sigma$ level of significance, by comparing diffuse emission models to a background-only hypothesis. The signal is consistent with modeled diffuse emission from the Galactic plane, but could also arise from a population of unresolved point sources., Comment: Submitted on May 12th, 2022; Accepted on May 4th, 2023

Effective medications are available for the treatment of ADHD; however, nonadherence rates for ADHD medication range from 13.2%–64%. The reasons for nonadherence can be complex. This review aims to look at how the beliefs and attitudes of adolescents and adults impact ADHD treatment adherence. Abstract

The majority of astrophysical neutrinos have undetermined origins. The IceCube Neutrino Observatory has observed astrophysical neutrinos but has not yet identified their sources. Blazars are promising source candidates, but previous searches for neutrino emission from populations of blazars detected in $\gtrsim$ GeV gamma-rays have not observed any significant neutrino excess. Recent findings in multi-messenger astronomy indicate that high-energy photons, co-produced with high-energy neutrinos, are likely to be absorbed and reemitted at lower energies. Thus, lower-energy photons may be better indicators of TeV-PeV neutrino production. This paper presents the first time-integrated stacking search for astrophysical neutrino emission from MeV-detected blazars in the first Fermi-LAT low energy catalog (1FLE) using ten years of IceCube muon-neutrino data. The results of this analysis are found to be consistent with a background-only hypothesis. Assuming an E$^{-2}$ neutrino spectrum and proportionality between the blazars' MeV gamma-ray fluxes and TeV-PeV neutrino flux, the upper limit on the 1FLE blazar energy-scaled neutrino flux is determined to be $1.64 \times 10^{-12}$ TeV cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ at 90% confidence level. Abstract

Galaxy clusters have the potential to accelerate cosmic rays (CRs) to ultra-high energies via accretion shocks or embedded CR acceleration sites. CRs with energies below the Hillas condition will be confined within the cluster and will eventually interact with the intracluster medium (ICM) gas to produce secondary neutrinos and $\gamma$ rays. Using 9.5 years of muon-neutrino track events from the IceCube Neutrino Observatory, we report the results of a stacking analysis of 1094 galaxy clusters, with masses $\gtrsim 10^{14}$ \(\textup{M}_\odot\) and redshifts between 0.01 and $\sim$1, detected by the {\it Planck} mission via the Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) effect. We find no evidence for significant neutrino emission and report upper limits on the cumulative unresolved neutrino flux from massive galaxy clusters after accounting for the completeness of the catalog up to a redshift of 2, assuming three different weighting scenarios for the stacking and three different power-law spectra. Weighting the sources according to mass and distance, we set upper limits at $90\%$ confidence level that constrain the flux of neutrinos from massive galaxy clusters ($\gtrsim 10^{14}$ \(\textup{M}_\odot\)) to be no more than $4.6\%$ of the diffuse IceCube observations at 100~TeV, assuming an unbroken $E^{-2.5}$ power-law spectrum., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures and one table. Abstract

In this work, we present the results of searches for signatures of dark matter decay or annihilation into Standard Model particles, and secret neutrino interactions with dark matter. Neutrinos could be produced in the decay or annihilation of galactic or extragalactic dark matter. Additionally, if an interaction between dark matter and neutrinos exists then dark matter will interact with extragalactic neutrinos. In particular galactic dark matter will induce an anisotropy in the neutrino sky if this interaction is present. We use seven and a half years of the High-Energy Starting Event (HESE) sample data, which measures neutrinos in the energy range of approximately 60 TeV to 10 PeV, to study these phenomena. This all-sky event selection is dominated by extragalactic neutrinos. For dark matter of $\sim$ 1 PeV in mass, we constrain the velocity-averaged annihilation cross section to be smaller than $10^{-23}$cm$^3$/s for the exclusive $\mu^+\mu^-$ channel and $10^{-22}$ cm$^3$/s for the $b\bar b$ channel. For the same mass, we constrain the lifetime of dark matter to be larger than $10^{28}$ s for all channels studied, except for decaying exclusively to $b\bar b$ where it is bounded to be larger than $10^{27}$ s. Finally, we also search for evidence of astrophysical neutrinos scattering on galactic dark matter in two scenarios. For fermionic dark matter with a vector mediator, we constrain the dimensionless coupling associated with this interaction to be less than 0.1 for dark matter mass of 0.1 GeV and a mediator mass of $10^{-4}~$ GeV. In the case of scalar dark matter with a fermionic mediator, we constrain the coupling to be less than 0.1 for dark matter and mediator masses below 1 MeV., Comment: 23 pages, 8 figures

Abstract

Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are considered as promising sources of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) due to their large power output. Observing a neutrino flux from GRBs would offer evidence that GRBs are hadronic accelerators of UHECRs. Previous IceCube analyses, which primarily focused on neutrinos arriving in temporal coincidence with the prompt gamma rays, found no significant neutrino excess. The four analyses presented in this paper extend the region of interest to 14 days before and after the prompt phase, including generic extended time windows and targeted precursor searches. GRBs were selected between May 2011 and October 2018 to align with the data set of candidate muon-neutrino events observed by IceCube. No evidence of correlation between neutrino events and GRBs was found in these analyses. Limits are set to constrain the contribution of the cosmic GRB population to the diffuse astrophysical neutrino flux observed by IceCube. Prompt neutrino emission from GRBs is limited to $\lesssim$1% of the observed diffuse neutrino flux, and emission on timescales up to $10^4$ s is constrained to 24% of the total diffuse flux.

Abstract

The Surface Enhancement of the IceTop air-shower array will include the addition of radio antennas and scintillator panels, co-located with the existing ice-Cherenkov tanks and covering an area of about 1 km$^2$. Together, these will increase the sensitivity of the IceCube Neutrino Observatory to the electromagnetic and muonic components of cosmic-ray-induced air showers at the South Pole. The inclusion of the radio technique necessitates an expanded set of simulation and analysis tools to explore the radio-frequency emission from air showers in the 70 MHz to 350 MHz band. In this paper we describe the software modules that have been developed to work with time- and frequency-domain information within IceCube's existing software framework, IceTray, which is used by the entire IceCube collaboration. The software includes a method by which air-shower simulation, generated using CoREAS, can be reused via waveform interpolation, thus overcoming a significant computational hurdle in the field.

Abstract

We present a search for an unstable sterile neutrino by looking for a matter-induced signal in eight years of atmospheric $\nu_\mu$ data collected from 2011 to 2019 at the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. Both the (stable) three-neutrino and the 3+1 sterile neutrino models are disfavored relative to the unstable sterile neutrino model, though with $p$-values of 2.5\% and 0.81\%, respectively, we do not observe evidence for 3+1 neutrinos with neutrino decay. The best-fit parameters for the sterile neutrino with decay model from this study are $\Delta m_{41}^2=6.7^{+3.9}_{-2.5}\,\rm{eV}^2$, $\sin^2 2\theta_{24}=0.33^{+0.20}_{-0.17}$, and $g^2=2.5\pi\pm1.5\pi$, where $g$ is the decay-mediating coupling. The preferred regions from short-baseline oscillation searches are excluded at 90\% C.L.

Abstract

The reconstruction of event-level information, such as the direction or energy of a neutrino interacting in IceCube DeepCore, is a crucial ingredient to many physics analyses. Algorithms to extract this high level information from the detector's raw data have been successfully developed and used for high energy events. In this work, we address unique challenges associated with the reconstruction of lower energy events in the range of a few to hundreds of GeV and present two separate, state-of-the-art algorithms. One algorithm focuses on the fast directional reconstruction of events based on unscattered light. The second algorithm is a likelihood-based multipurpose reconstruction offering superior resolutions, at the expense of larger computational cost.

Abstract

We present the first comprehensive search for high-energy neutrino emission from high- and low-mass X-ray binaries conducted by IceCube. Galactic X-ray binaries are long-standing candidates for the source of Galactic hadronic cosmic rays and neutrinos. The compact object in these systems can be the site of cosmic-ray acceleration, and neutrinos can be produced by interactions of cosmic rays with radiation or gas, in the jet of a microquasar, in the stellar wind, or in the atmosphere of the companion star. We study X-ray binaries using 7.5 years of IceCube data with three separate analyses. In the first, we search for periodic neutrino emission from 55 binaries in the Northern Sky with known orbital periods. In the second, the X-ray light curves of 102 binaries across the entire sky are used as templates to search for time-dependent neutrino emission. Finally, we search for time-integrated emission of neutrinos for a list of 4 notable binaries identified as microquasars. In the absence of a significant excess, we place upper limits on the neutrino flux for each hypothesis and compare our results with theoretical predictions for several binaries. In addition, we evaluate the sensitivity of the next generation neutrino telescope at the South Pole, IceCube-Gen2, and demonstrate its power to identify potential neutrino emission from these binary sources in the Galaxy., Comment: 10+7 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

We present a measurement of the density of GeV muons in near-vertical air showers using three years of data recorded by the IceTop array at the South Pole. Depending on the shower size, the muon densities have been measured at lateral distances between 200 m and 1000 m. From these lateral distributions, we derive the muon densities as functions of energy at reference distances of 600 m and 800 m for primary energies between 2.5 PeV and 40 PeV and between 9 PeV and 120 PeV, respectively. The muon densities are determined using, as a baseline, the hadronic interaction model Sibyll 2.1 together with various composition models. The measurements are consistent with the predicted muon densities within these baseline interaction and composition models. The measured muon densities have also been compared to simulations using the post-LHC models EPOS-LHC and QGSJet-II.04. The result of this comparison is that the post-LHC models together with any given composition model yield higher muon densities than observed. This is in contrast to the observations above 1 EeV where all model simulations yield for any mass composition lower muon densities than the measured ones. The post-LHC models in general feature higher muon densities so that the agreement with experimental data at the highest energies is improved but the muon densities are not correct in the energy range between 2.5 PeV and about 100 PeV., Comment: 20 pages, 17 captioned figures

Abstract

We report a search for nonstandard neutrino interactions (NSI) using eight years of TeV-scale atmospheric muon neutrino data from the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. By reconstructing incident energies and zenith angles for atmospheric neutrino events, this analysis presents unified confidence intervals for the NSI parameter $\epsilon_{\mu \tau}$. The best-fit value is consistent with no NSI at a p-value of 25.2%. With a 90% confidence interval of $-0.0041 \leq \epsilon_{\mu \tau} \leq 0.0031$ along the real axis and similar strength in the complex plane, this result is the strongest constraint on any NSI parameter from any oscillation channel to date.

Young African American women are disproportionately impacted by early-onset breast cancer compared to women of other races. Given the racial disparities and because young women are typically not the primary audience for breast cancer educational messaging, there is a need to identify recommendations for age-appropriate breast cancer education for African American women below mammogram eligibility. Through N = 30 key informant interviews with young African American breast cancer survivors, family members of young survivors, community organization leaders and healthcare providers, we identified breast cancer educational message content and communication channels relevant for these women. Participants recommended that message content should emphasize the need to address family cancer history and self-advocacy in healthcare encounters in addition to concerns about loss of womanhood, financial costs and opportunity costs associated with preventive healthcare visits. Breast cancer messages for this audience should consider the influences of earlier life stage, culture and race. Recommended communication channels highlighted use of social media and videos. Findings will inform future age-appropriate educational messaging aimed at eliminating early-onset breast cancer disparities disproportionately impacting young African American women.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: Short-term RCTs have demonstrated that MPH-treatment significantly reduces ADHD-symptoms, but is also associated with adverse events, including sleep problems. However, data on long-term effects of MPH on sleep remain limited. METHODS: We performed a 2-year naturalistic prospective pharmacovigilance multicentre study. Participants were recruited into three groups: ADHD patients intending to start MPH-treatment (MPH-group), those not intending to use ADHD-medication (no-MPH-group), and a non-ADHD control-group. Sleep problems were assessed with the Children's-Sleep-Habits-Questionnaire (CSHQ). RESULTS: 1,410 participants were enrolled. Baseline mean CSHQ-total-sleep-scores could be considered clinically significant for the MPH-group and the no-MPH-group, but not for controls. The only group to show a significant increase in any aspect of sleep from baseline to 24-months was the control-group. Comparing the MPH- to the no-MPH-group no differences in total-sleep-score changes were found. CONCLUSION: Our findings support that sleep-problems are common in ADHD, but don't suggest significant negative long-term effects of MPH on sleep.

Abstract

A sense of school belonging is essential for adolescent development, though there is limited research investigating ways to improve students' sense of school belonging in Qatar. With 116 Qatari secondary school students, the current study explored student perspectives of ways teachers and schools could improve their sense of school belonging. Students responded to a survey including open‐ended questions and a descriptive scale measuring the usefulness of established belonging strategies during remote learning, in‐person, or all the time (both). Encouragement and support from teachers were found to be useful all the time, with school activities during breaks and opportunities to make friends only being useful during school‐based learning. From the examination of open‐ended responses using a hybrid qualitative approach with inductive and deductive coding, two overarching themes each at the teacher‐level and school‐level were found, defined by several subthemes. Belonging practices at the teacher‐level included caring and supportive teachers and teachers treating students as people. Belonging practices at the school‐level included student engagement and a positive and supportive school environment. For Qatari students practices such as prioritising supportive student–teacher relationships, introducing policies which promote a respectful, fair and safe environment, and offering school wide‐extracurricular activities that encourage peer connections are important to develop their sense of school belonging.

The aim of this study was to investigate the safety of MPH in relation to pubertal maturation and to explore the monitoring of bone age. METHOD: Participants from ADDUCE, a two-year observational longitudinal study with three parallel cohorts (MPH group, no-MPH group, and a non-ADHD control group), were compared with respect to Tanner staging. An Italian subsample of medicated-ADHD was further assessed by the monitoring of bone age. RESULTS: The medicated and unmedicated ADHD groups did not differ in Tanner stages indicating no higher risk of sexual maturational delay in the MPH-treated patients. The medicated subsample monitored for bone age showed a slight acceleration of the bone maturation after 24 months, however their predicted adult height remained stable. CONCLUSION: Our results do not suggest safety concerns on long-term treatment with MPH in relation to pubertal maturation and growth.

Abstract

Introduction: Vertigo, dizziness, gaze instability and disequilibrium are highly prevalent in people with MS (PwMS) and head movement induced dizziness is commonly reported. Vestibular physical therapy (VPT) is a specialised, noninvasive and effective therapy for these problems but usually involves travel for the person to a specialist center with both personal and carbon costs. The use of wearable sensors to track head movement and smartphone applications to deliver and track programs has potential to improve VPT in MS. Methods: This study investigated the usability and effects of a commercially available digital VPT system (wearable head sensor, smartphone app and clinician software) to deliver VPT to PwMS. A pre/post treatment design was employed and the primary outcome was the System Usability Scale (SUS). Other patient reported outcomes were the Service User Acceptability Questionnaire (SUTAQ), the Patient Enablement Instrument (PEI) and the Dizziness Handicap Inventory (DHI). Physical outcomes measurements included Mini-BESTest (MB), Modified Dynamic Gait Index (mDGI), Gait Speed (GS), Dynamic Visual Acuity (DVA) and head kinematics and symptoms during exercise. Results: Sixteen PwMS (14 female), mean age 44(±14) years were recruited to the study and twelve completed VPT. Mean adherence to exercise, measured digitally was 60% (±18.4). SUS scores were high at 81 (±14) and SUTAQ scores also demonstrated high levels of satisfaction and acceptability of the system. Statistically significant improvements in MB (mean change 2.25; p = 0.004), mDGI (median change 1.00; p = 0.008), DVA (median change -1.00; p = 0.004) were found. Head frequencies significantly improved with concurrent decreased intensity of dizziness during head movements (mean change across 4 gaze stabilization exercises was 23 beats per minute; p < 0.05). Non-significant improvements were seen in DHI (p = 0.07) and GS (p = 0.15). 64.5% of follow up visits were conducted remotely (video or phone), facilitated by the system. Discussion: This study had two main outcomes and benefits for PwMS. Firstly, we showed that the system used was both acceptable and could be used by PwMS. Secondly, we demonstrated an improvement in a range of dizziness, balance and gait metrics with remotely delivered care. Abstract

We analyze the component structure of models for 4D N = 1 supersymmetric nonlinear electrodynamics that enjoy invariance under continuous duality rotations. The N = 1 supersymmetric Born-Infeld action is a member of this family. Such dynamical systems have a more complicated structure, especially in the presence of supergravity, as compared with well-studied effective supersymmetric theories containing at most two derivatives (including nonlinear Kahler sigma-models). As a result, when deriving their canonically normalized component actions, it becomes impractical and cumbersome to follow the traditional approach of (i) reducing to components; and then (ii) applying a field-dependent Weyl and local chiral transformation. It proves to be more efficient to follow the Kugo-Uehara scheme which consists of (i) extending the superfield theory to a super-Weyl invariant system; and then (ii) applying a plain component reduction along with imposing a suitable super-Weyl gauge condition. Here we implement this scheme to derive the bosonic action of self-dual supersymmetric electrodynamics coupled to the dilaton-axion chiral multiplet and a Kahler sigma-model. In the fermionic sector, the action contains higher derivative terms. In the globally supersymmetric case, a nonlinear field redefinition is explicitly constructed which eliminates all the higher derivative terms and brings the fermionic action to a one-parameter deformation of the Akulov-Volkov action for the Goldstino. Abstract

This research aims to analyse, understand and evaluate public perceptions of, and attitudes towards, the historic environment. Moving from a wider consideration of the political and economic demands on 'the past' and the exploration of the processes of environmental perception to a place-specific case study, it examines the management practices and interpretive processes that influence how and why people engage with their local historic environment. The thesis begins with a critical appraisal of the discourses surrounding the management and conservation of the historic environment, with particular reference to its claims regarding sense of identity, belonging and place. It is argued that, contrary to the accepted assumptions, little is understood about how people perceive the historic environment, and that until this has been resolved, the role of the historic environment in social well-being must remain assumed rather than proven. One of the main aims of this work is to devise a means of analysing how people engage with their local historic environment. The research methodology focuses on studies in landscape perception and the methods applied to examine attitudes, beliefs, emotions and behaviour as they relate to the environment. This allows the development of effective qualitative techniques in these areas, which afford the detailed examination, by way of a case study, of the relationship between people’s sense of identity, belonging, place, and the archaeological and historical features of the environment. The location chosen for the case study is the rural valley of Glencar in south west Ireland. No comprehensive account of the area's history and antiquities existed, thus necessitating the creation of an inventory and narrative account of the historic environment of Glencar. This new template provided the basis against which the local community’s perceptions were examined through a tightly focused survey questionnaire. The case study’s conclusions demonstrate a significant gap between the practice and policy of historic environmental management and the ways in which the public accesses the historic environment.

Abstract

Three papers report on the role of preoperative expectations and stress in surgical recovery. The first paper critically reviews the role of expectations in surgical recovery. It identifies various types of expectations, their relationship to recovery, and the theoretical and methodological concerns within the literature. The second paper focuses on the role of expectations in recovery before and after surgery, and at seven days follow-up. Preoperative expectations predicted symptom severity, speed of healing, speed of return to work and psychological distress seven days after surgery, after medical and anxiety factors were controlled. The third paper is a brief report comparing the relative contribution of stress and anxiety in recovery from oral surgery. Stress and trait anxiety together predicted postoperative energy ratings, number of symptoms, anxiety and depression at follow-up, after medical and gender effects were controlled. Stress also predicted postoperative complications. The importance of establishing the relationship between factors known to influence recovery, as well as their individual relationships with adverse recovery periods and the development of future preoperative interventions are discussed.

Although many randomised controlled trials support short-term efficacy, tolerability, and safety, data on long-term safety and tolerability are scarce. The aim of this study was to investigate the safety of methylphenidate over a 2-year period in relation to growth and development, psychiatric health, neurological health, and cardiovascular function in children and adolescents. METHODS: We conducted a naturalistic, longitudinal, controlled study as part of the ADDUCE research programme in 27 European child and adolescent mental health centres in the UK, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, and Hungary. Participants aged 6-17 years were recruited into three cohorts: medication-naive ADHD patients who intended to start methylphenidate treatment (methylphenidate group), medication-naive ADHD patients who did not intend to start any ADHD medication (no-methylphenidate group), and a control group without ADHD. Children with ADHD diagnosed by a qualified clinician according to the DSM-IV criteria and, in the control group, children who scored less than 1·5 on average on the Swanson, Nolan, and Pelham IV rating scale for ADHD items, and whose hyperactivity score on the parent-rated Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire was within the normal range (<6) were eligible for inclusion. Participants were excluded if they had previously taken any ADHD medications but remained eligible if they had previously taken or were currently taking other psychotropic drugs. BACKGROUND: Younger women's engagement with gambling has changed over recent decades due to a range of socio-cultural, environmental and commercial factors. However, younger women's distinct lived experiences with gambling have rarely been considered. The following critical qualitative inquiry explored factors that influenced younger women's engagement with gambling and their perceptions of gambling risks. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 41 Australian women aged 18-40 years. Participants were asked questions relating to their reasons for gambling, and the perceived risks associated with gambling. Reflexive thematic analysis was used to interpret the data. RESULTS: Five themes were constructed from the data. First, women reported that they gambled to escape their everyday lives, with some women reporting gambling within their own homes. Second, women reported gambling for financial reasons, particularly to change their life circumstances and outcomes. Third, gambling was used by women as a way to connect with social network members. Fourth, gambling was an incidental activity that was an extension of non-gambling leisure activities. Finally, lower risk perceptions of participants' own gambling risk contributed to their engagement and continuation of gambling. CONCLUSION: Public health and health promotion initiatives should recognise that young women's gambling practices are diverse, and address the full range of socio-cultural, environmental and commercial factors that may influence younger women's engagement with gambling.
