Background: Women with abnormal glucose tolerance during pregnancy are at risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD), with higher rates among Hispanics. However, studies on the impact of lifestyle interventions on postpartum CVD profiles are sparse. Methods: This is a secondary analysis of a controlled trial among a subsample of Hispanic women with abnormal glucose tolerance participating in Estudió PARTO (Project Aiming to Reduce Type twO diabetes; mean age = 28.2 y, SD: 5.8) who were randomized to a culturally modified Lifestyle intervention (n = 45) or a comparison Health and Wellness intervention (n = 55). Primary endpoints were biomarkers of cardiovascular risk (lipids, C-reactive protein, fetuin-A, and albumin-to-creatinine ratio) and insulin resistance (fasting insulin, glucose, HbA1c, homeostasis model assessment, leptin, tumor necrosis factor-alpha, and adiponectin) measured at baseline (6-wk postpartum) and 6 and 12 months. Results: In intent-to-treat analyses, there were no significant differences in changes in biomarkers of CVD risk or insulin resistance over the postpartum year. In prespecified sensitivity analyses, women adherent with the Lifestyle Intervention had more favorable improvements in insulin (intervention effect = −4.87, SE: 1.93, P =.01) and HOMA-IR (intervention effect = −1.15, SE: 0.53, P =.03) compared with the Health and Wellness arm. In pooled analyses, regardless of intervention arm, women with higher postpartum sports/exercise had greater increase in HDL-cholesterol (intervention effect = 6.99, SE: 1.72, P =.0001). Conclusions: In this randomized controlled trial among Hispanic women with abnormal glucose tolerance, we did not observe a significant effect on postpartum biomarkers of CVD risk or insulin resistance. Introduction: Fluorine 18‐fluoro‐glucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (18F‐FDG PET/CT) is commonly used for the staging of head and neck cancer. This study aimed to evaluate the correlation between 18F‐FDG PET/CT, haematological parameters and prognosis in patients with advanced head and neck cancer. Methods: This was a single‐institutional retrospective study of 83 patients with advanced head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) who underwent 18F‐FDG PET/CT imaging before initial treatment between 2014 and 2018. 18F‐FDG PET/CT after treatment was performed in 57 patients. The prognostic parameters of the pre‐ and post‐treatment maximum standardised uptake value (SUVmax), metabolic tumour volume (MTV), total lesion glycolysis (TLG) of primary tumours and haematological parameters were analysed to evaluate the association between overall survival (OS) and progression‐free survival (PFS). Results: Pre‐MTV, pre‐TLG and post‐SUVmax were significantly associated with poor OS and PFS (p < 0.05). Haematological parameters, including pretreatment neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio and C‐reactive protein/albumin ratio, were associated with 18F‐FDG PET/CT parameters. In multivariate analysis, post‐SUVmax was an independent prognostic factor for OS and PFS. Conclusion: A correlation between PET/CT metabolic and haematological parameters was observed. The volume and intensity of 18F‐FDG uptake region, in addition to haematological parameters, are feasible markers for predicting the progression of HNSCC in daily practice. The effect of sitagliptin and empagliflozin on serum levels of asprosin and metabolic parameters in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) was assessed in a non-randomized, prospective observational study. Seventy-nine T2DM patients, without adequate glycemic control with metformin monotherapy, were included in the study. In addition to the ongoing metformin treatment, patients received sitagliptin 100 mg and empagliflozin 10 mg once daily for 12 weeks. Anthropometric parameters, lipid and glycemic profile, insulin resistance (homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance index [HOMA-IR]), and asprosin serum levels were assessed at baseline and after 12 weeks of therapy. Both empagliflozin and sitagliptin treatments led to similar, significant improvement in fasting blood glucose (FBG) and hemoglobin A1C (HbA1C). Compared to baseline, triglyceride (TG) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) were improved with both treatments, but empagliflozin led to the more improvement. No significant change of total cholesterol (TC) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) were observed in either group. Insulin resistance was significantly attenuated in both groups, but to a greater degree with empagliflozin treatment. The reduction in serum asprosin levels from baseline was significantly higher in patients taking empagliflozin compared to those receiving sitagliptin. Additionally, individuals on empagliflozin exhibited a more decrease in body mass index (BMI) and body weight compared to those on sitagliptin. According to our findings, the addition of empagliflozin to metformin appeared to offer greater benefits compared to the addition of sitagliptin in terms of decreasing asprosin levels and improving certain metabolic parameters in T2DM patients. Background: Multiple models intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) based 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography-magnetic resonance(18F-FDG PET/MR) could reflect the microscopic information of the tumor from multiple perspectives. However, its value in the prognostic assessment of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) still needs to be further explored. Objective: To compare the value of 18F-FDG PET/MR metabolic parameters and diffusion parameters in the prognostic assessment of patients with NSCLC. Meterial and methods: Chest PET and IVIM scans were performed on 61 NSCLC patients using PET/MR. The maximum standard uptake value (SUVmax), metabolic tumor volume (MTV), total lesion glycolysis (TLG), diffusion coefficient (D), perfusion fraction (f), pseudo diffusion coefficient (D*) and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) were calculated. The impact of SUVmax, MTV, TLG, D, f, D*and ADC on survival was measured in terms of the hazard ratio (HR) effect size. Overall survival time (OS) and progression-free survival time (PFS) were evaluated with the Kaplan–Meier and Cox proportional hazard models. Log-rank test was used to analyze the differences in parameters between groups. Results: 61 NSCLC patients had an overall median OS of 18 months (14.75, 22.85) and a median PFS of 17 months (12.00, 21.75). Univariate analysis showed that pathological subtype, TNM stage, surgery, SUVmax, MTV, TLG, D, D* and ADC were both influential factors for OS and PFS in NSCLC patients. Multifactorial analysis showed that MTV, D* and ADC were independent predicting factors for OS and PFS in NSCLC patients. Conclusion: MTV, D* and ADC are independent predicting factors affecting OS and PFS in NSCLC patients. 18F-FDG PET/MR-derived metabolic parameters and diffusion parameters have clinical value for prognostic assessment of NSCLC patients. Background and aims: This study aimed to examine the cumulative effects of body mass index (BMI), body roundness index (BRI), pulse pressure (PP), triglycerides (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL) and fasting plasma glucose (FPG) on Type 2 diabetes (T2D) morbidity. Methods: A total of 78,456 participants aged older than 45 years were extracted from basic public health services in China. During the 2-year follow-up, 6,942 individuals had developed T2D. The binary logistic regression models and multinomial logistic regression models were conducted to investigate the effects of cumulative metabolic parameters on incident T2D, prediabetes regression and progression. Results: We found statistically deleterious impacts of exposure to high cumulative BMI, BRI, PP, TG and low cumulative HDL on T2D morbidity and prediabetes progression. Compared to the group with low cumulative of all five parameters, the adjusted ORs for new-onset T2D for participants presenting with 1–2, 3, and 4–5 elevated metabolic parameters were 1.41(1.31,1.52), 1.93(1.74,2.13) and 2.21(1.94,2.51), respectively. There was additive interaction between FPG level and cumulative metabolic parameters with T2D. Compared with participants with the lowest quartile of FPG and low cumulative of all 5 parameters, those with the highest quartile of FPG and high cumulative of 4–5 parameters had a 14.63 [95% CI (12.27, 17.42)] higher risk of incident T2D. Conclusions: Participants with more numbers of high-cumulative metabolic parameters were associated with a higher risk of incident T2D and prediabetes progression. Background/objective: Obesity and overweight have become growing health-related issues worldwide, which also applies to Poland. Excess fat mass is associated with an increased risk of metabolic and non-metabolic complications. The aim of our pre–post-designed study was to assess the effect of behavioral intervention on body weight, fat mass and anthropometric and metabolic parameters in obese and overweight individuals. Methods: The study included one hundred people (85 women) with excess fat mass who voluntarily declared their willingness to participate in the weight-loss program consisted of 12 weeks of the DASH diet combined with regular, supervised physical activity. Anthropometric measurements and laboratory tests were performed in all study participants, and anthropometric and metabolic indices were calculated at baseline and after three months of treatment. Results: Body weight decreased significantly by 5.63 ± 4.03 kg, BMI by 2.06 ± 1.44 kg/m2, waist circumference by 5.6 ± 3.7 cm, fat mass from 40.04 ± 6.90 to 36.56 ± 7.07% and uric acid level by 16.0 ± 41.6 μmol/L (p < 0.001 in all cases). We also found an improvement in lipid profile and anthropometric and metabolic indices, except for HDL cholesterol and plasma glucose levels. Conclusions: The effect of the DASH diet and supervised physical activity was beneficial regardless of age, sex and the presence of hypertension or dysglycemia at baseline. The implementation of a healthy lifestyle was associated with a significant improvement in anthropometric and metabolic parameters, which, if continued, may reduce the risk of unfavorable health-related outcomes in the future. Purpose: To evaluate the difference in the diagnostic efficacy of 18F-PSMA-1007 PET/CT and pelvic MRI in primary prostate cancer, as well as the correlation between the two methods and histopathological parameters and serum PSA levels. Methods: A total of 41 patients with suspected prostate cancer who underwent 18F-PSMA-1007 PET/CT imaging in our department from 2018 to 2023 were retrospectively collected. All patients underwent 18F-PSMA-1007 PET/CT and MRI scans. The sensitivity, PPV and diagnostic accuracy of MRI and 18F-PSMA-1007 PET/CT in the diagnosis of prostate cancer were calculated after comparing the results of MRI and 18F-PSMA-1007 PET/CT with biopsy. The Spearman test was used to calculate the correlation between 18F-PSMA-1007 PET/CT, MRI parameters, histopathological indicators, and serum PSA levels. Results: Compared with histopathological results, the sensitivity, PPV and diagnostic accuracy of 18F-PSMA-1007 PET/CT in the diagnosis of prostate cancer were 95.1%, 100.0% and 95.1%, respectively. The sensitivity, PPV and diagnostic accuracy of MRI in the diagnosis of prostate cancer were 82.9%, 100.0% and 82.9%, respectively. There was a mild to moderately positive correlation between Gleason (Gs) score, Ki-67 index, serum PSA level and 18F-PSMA-1007 PET/CT parameters (p < 0.05). There was a moderately negative correlation between the expression of AMACR (P504S) and 18F-PSMA-1007 PET/CT parameters (p < 0.05). The serum PSA level and the Gs score were moderately positively correlated with the MRI parameters (p < 0.05). There was no correlation between histopathological parameters and MRI parameters (p > 0.05). Conclusion: Compared with MRI, 18F-PSMA-1007 PET/CT has higher sensitivity and diagnostic accuracy in the detection of malignant prostate tumors. In addition, the Ki-67 index and AMACR (P504S) expression were only correlated with 18F-PSMA-1007 PET/CT parameters. Gs score and serum PSA level were correlated with 18F-PSMA-1007 PET/CT and MRI parameters. 18F-PSMA-1007 PET/CT examination can provide certain reference values for the clinical diagnosis, evaluation, and treatment of malignant prostate tumors. Background: Previous studies have implicated the role of H. pylori infection in developing the metabolic syndrome. However, findings remain contradictory, and data from developing countries are scarce. Methods: We employed a cross-sectional study design to assess the relationship between H. pylori infection and metabolic syndrome among diabetic patients attending Jimma Hospital, Ethiopia. An interviewer-led questionnaire administered to study participants provided information on sociodemographic factors, and medical records were used to obtain medical history information. Metabolic parameters, including plasma glucose, triglycerides (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c), body-mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), systolic blood pressure (SBP), and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) were collected. H. pylori infection status was assessed using IgG Enzyme-linked Immunosorbent Assays (ELISA). The effect of H. pylori infection on metabolic syndrome and metabolic parameters was determined using multivariate linear and logistic regressions. Results: We found H. pylori infection status was positively but not significantly associated with metabolic syndrome (AOR = 1.507, 95% CI: 0.570–3.981, p = 0.408). When the analysis was restricted to individual metabolic parameters, H. pylori positivity was significantly associated with lower HDL-c and higher SB, respectively. Conclusions: Our result confirms that individual metabolic parameters, not an overall metabolic syndrome, are significantly associated with H. pylori infection. Future studies should examine the relationship between H. pylori and metabolic syndrome, considering gastrointestinal conditions such as GERD, GU, and DU. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background and Objectives: Obesity is associated with numerous co-morbidities, including dyslipidemia, insulin resistance and diabetes mellitus. Bariatric surgery is the mainstay of treatment for obesity as the only method with confirmed long-term effects in weight reduction and the remission of comorbidities. Postoperative recommendations leading to changes in dietary habits and changes in digestion and absorption in the gastrointestinal tract after bariatric surgery may additionally influence the levels of laboratory parameters that reflect the metabolic and nutritional status. The purpose of the study was to analyze the possible influence of changes in dietary habits after bariatric surgery on those laboratory results that reflect the metabolic and nutritional status. Materials and Methods: This was a retrospective study of 88 patients with a history of bariatric surgery. Data were gathered from before the surgery and at 6 months after the surgery and included diet structure and selected laboratory parameters reflecting the metabolic and nutritional status, i.e., levels of fasting glucose, glycated hemoglobin, cholesterol, low- and high-density lipoproteins, triglycerides, alanine and aspartate aminotransferases, proteins, ferrum, ferritin, vitamin B12, folic acid, vitamin D and calcium, the red blood cell count and the hematocrit. Results: Postoperative festive glucose levels were reduced by 14% and were more significant in patients after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. There was an increase of 22% in concentrations of high-density lipoproteins. Triglyceride concentrations were reduced by 32%. Aminotransferase levels decreased by 43% for alanine aminotransferase and by 14% for aspartate aminotransferase. Among the changes in dietary habits, post-bariatric patients had a reduced consumption of red meat and an increased consumption of fish, milk and dairy products and wholegrain products. Vitamin D and ferrum levels were higher after the surgery, whereas vitamin B12 and folic acid levels remained unchanged. Conclusions: Improved dietary habits of patients after bariatric surgery may lead to changes in laboratory parameters that reflect the ameliorated metabolic and nutritional status of patients after bariatric surgery. Background: Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic inflammatory disorder affecting pilosebaceous units causing painful nodules, abscesses, and scarring. Despite global studies linking HS to metabolic syndrome, insights specific to Indian patients are limited. Materials and Methods: This study aimed to describe the clinicodemographic characteristics and study frequency of metabolic syndrome in Indian HS patients. In this cross-sectional study, 100 HS patients were evaluated for clinical characteristics, comorbidities, pain and suppuration scores, quality of life, and ophthalmological and dental abnormalities. Metabolic parameters, including anthropometry and blood markers, were performed in all cases and 100 age- and gender-matched controls. Results: The mean age was 29.47 years, with a male predominance of 57%. HS predominantly affected a combination of two or more sites (60%), with nodules as primary lesions (95%). Quality of life was significantly impaired, with 49% experiencing moderate impact as per Dermatology Life Quality Index. Metabolic derangements, represented by an increased body mass index, waist circumference, blood pressure, fasting blood sugar, and fasting insulin, were significantly more frequent in HS cases compared to controls (P < 0.001). The frequency of metabolic syndrome in HS patients was 42%, significantly higher than controls (8%, P < 0.001) with a relative risk of 5.25 (95% CI 2.68–10.58). Dental and ophthalmological abnormalities were observed in 35% and 21.7% of screened patients, respectively. Limitations: Cross-sectional nature, no prospective assessment to determine evolution with time, and limited patient number are the limitations of the study. Conclusion: A substantial association with metabolic syndrome and considerable impact on quality of life is seen in Indian HS patients, emphasizing the need for metabolic screening and holistic management strategies.

Abstract Shift work has become increasingly common in modern society. Shift work has been associated with a range of negative health outcomes. Therefore, this 10-years retrospective cohort study, aimed to investigate the relationship between shift work and blood and metabolic parameters. This retrospective cohort study was conducted in a metal parts manufacturing industry in 2023. In this study, 204 shift workers and 204 day workers were examined. All the studied blood and metabolic parameters were collected by reviewing the medical records of all participants during a 10-years period (2013–2022). Moreover, the amounts of physical, chemical, and ergonomics harmful agents in the work environment were investigated. All the collected data were analyzed using SPSS version 25.0. The values of Body Mass Index (BMI), Red Blood Cell Count (RBC), Platelets Count (PLT), Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone Level (TSH), Fasting Blood Sugar Level (FBS), Creatinine, Triglyceride (TG), Liver Enzymes level (SGOT and SGPT), and Systolic Blood Pressure (SBP) were higher among the shift work employees, and a significant difference was observed between the values of these parameters between the two groups. The results of logistic regression showed that the highest effect of shift work was observed on the parameters of FBS, TG, SGPT, TSH, Physical activity, BMI, Sleep duration, PLT, and Sleep quality with beta coefficient values of 0.49, 0.33, 0.29, 0.29, 0.20, 0.18, 0.14, 0.13 and, 0.11, respectively (p-value

A total of forty-one patients with newly diagnosed cardiac/pericardial masses who underwent 18F-FDG PET/CT were recruited. PET/CT metabolic parameters including the maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax), mean standardized uptake value (SUVmean), total lesion glycolysis (TLG), tumor metabolic volume (MTV), the maximum tumor-to-mediastinal background ratio (TMR) and the maximum tumor-to-liver background ratio (TLR) is measured or calculated to evaluate the benign or malignant nature of cardiac/pericardial masses. Compared with benign cardiac/pericardial lesions, cardiac/pericardial malignancies had higher SUVmax, SUVmean, TLG, MTV, TMR, and TLR. All these PET/CT metabolic parameters showed high diagnostic performance in semi-quantitative evaluation of benign or malignant cardiac or pericardial masses, and SUVmean and MTV had the highest diagnostic accuracy. Therefore, PET/CT metabolic parameters can semi-quantitatively evaluate the benign or malignant cardiac/pericardial masses.

Background. Essential hypertension (EH) is a complex, multifactorial and polygenic disease. Despite effective measures for control and modification of traditional risk factors, a significant amount of risk remains. The aim of the study was to evaluate changes in clinical parameters and to analyze the relationship of cholecalciferol, parathyroid hormone with anthropometric, metabolic parameters in patients with EH. Materials and methods. One hundred subjects with EH and target organ damage (stage 2), moderate, high, very high cardiovascular risk were enrolled in case-control study. Control group consisted of 60 healthy subjects matched for sex and age. Introduction: The prevalence of reflux esophagitis (RE) is relatively high around the world. We investigated routine metabolic parameters for associations with RE prevalence and severity, creating a user-friendly RE prediction nomogram. Material and methods: We included 10,881 individuals who had upper gastrointestinal endoscopy at a hospital. We employed univariate and multivariate logistic regression for independent risk factors related to RE prevalence, and conducted ordinal logistic regression for independent prognostic factors of RE severity. Subsequently, a nomogram was constructed using multivariate logistic regression analysis, and its performance was assessed through the utilization of receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves, calibration curves, decision curve analysis (DCA), and clinical impact curve (CIC) analysis. Results: In this study, 43.8% (4769 individuals) had confirmed RE. Multivariate analysis identified BMI, age, alcohol use, diabetes, Helicobacter pylori, systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), glucose, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC), albumin, uric acid (UA), fT3, and fT4 as independent RE risk factors (p < 0.05). The personalized nomogram used 17 factors to predict RE, with an AUC of 0.921 (95% CI: 0.916-0.926), specificity 84.02%, sensitivity 84.86%, and accuracy 84.39%, reflecting excellent discrimination. Calibration, decision, and CIC analyses affirmed the model's high predictive accuracy and clinical utility. Additionally, ordinal logistic regression linked hypertension, diabetes, HDL-C, LDL-C, TG, and TC to RE severity. Purpose: Dietary phytochemicals have been under examination as adjuvants for the prevention and treatment of obesity and diabetes. This study aimed at examining the potential associations of dietary "Phytochemical Index" (PI) and polyphenol intake with obesity and diabetes-related parameters. Materials and Methods: The case-control study involved 331 participants (156 overweight/obese and 175 normal weight), aged 18–50 years. Dietary intake was assessed using the 24-hr dietary recall method, and the PI score was calculated as the percentage of energy intake provided by phytochemical-rich foods. Polyphenol intakes were calculated using Phenol-Explorer and U.S. Department of Agriculture databases. Anthropometrical measurements were taken, serum glucose, insulin, and lipid profiles were analyzed, homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) was calculated, and blood pressure was measured. Linear regression analyses were used to examine the potential associations. Results: Participants with higher PI scores had higher total and some sub-classes polyphenol intakes compared with lower ones (P < 0.05, for each). Dietary PI score was not associated with any of the anthropometrical measurements; however, total polyphenol and flavonoids intakes were inversely associated with body mass index (β = −0.269, P = 0.049; β = −0.262, P = 0.048; respectively), waist circumference (β = −0.127, P = 0.021; β = −0.130, P = 0.016; respectively), and waist-to-hip ratio (β = −20.724, P = 0.032; β = −22.199, P = 0.018; respectively) after adjusting for potential confounders. Either dietary PI score or total and sub-class polyphenol intakes were not associated with a better metabolic profile, except for the lignan intake, which was inversely associated with HOMA-IR (β = −0.048, P = 0.011). Background: Smoking cessation is crucial for reducing complications of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), but associated weight gain can worsen glycemic control, discouraging quitting attempts. Varenicline, a partial agonist of α4β2 nicotinic receptors, aids smoking cessation. This study examines the effects of varenicline on body weight and metabolic parameters in patients with T2DM and prediabetes. Methods: Fifty-three patients were enrolled, of which 32 successfully quit smoking after a three-month course of varenicline and were examined after an additional month with no medication. Measurements taken at baseline, 2.5 months, and 4 months included body weight, blood pressure, resting metabolic rate (RMR), glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), fasting glucose, blood lipids, C-reactive protein (CRP), appetite-related hormones, and physical activity. Results: Post-treatment, there were no significant changes in body weight, blood pressure, RMR, or glycemic control. Total (CHOL) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL-C) cholesterol decreased significantly at 4 months of the study (from 168 to 156 mg/dL, p = 0.013, and from 96 to 83 mg/dL, p = 0.013, respectively). Leptin levels increased (from 11 to 13.8 ng/dL, p = 0.004), as did glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) levels (from 39.6 to 45.8 pM, p = 0.016) at 4 months of follow-up. The percentage of participants who reported moderate-intensity activity increased from 28% to 56%, while those reporting high-intensity activity increased from 19% to 22%, respectively (p = 0.039). Conclusions: Our study showed that smoking cessation with varenicline in smokers with T2DM and prediabetes led to significant improvements in lipid profile, significant increase in plasma leptin and GLP-1 levels, and increased physical activity, without significant weight gain. Thus, smoking cessation without weight gain or deteriorated glycemic control is feasible for these smokers, with added benefits to lipid profiles, GLP-1 regulation, and physical activity. Shift work has become increasingly common in modern society. Shift work has been associated with a range of negative health outcomes. Therefore, this 10-years retrospective cohort study, aimed to investigate the relationship between shift work and blood and metabolic parameters. This retrospective cohort study was conducted in a metal parts manufacturing industry in 2023. In this study, 204 shift workers and 204 day workers were examined. All the studied blood and metabolic parameters were collected by reviewing the medical records of all participants during a 10-years period (2013–2022). Moreover, the amounts of physical, chemical, and ergonomics harmful agents in the work environment were investigated. All the collected data were analyzed using SPSS version 25.0. The values of Body Mass Index (BMI), Red Blood Cell Count (RBC), Platelets Count (PLT), Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone Level (TSH), Fasting Blood Sugar Level (FBS), Creatinine, Triglyceride (TG), Liver Enzymes level (SGOT and SGPT), and Systolic Blood Pressure (SBP) were higher among the shift work employees, and a significant difference was observed between the values of these parameters between the two groups. The results of logistic regression showed that the highest effect of shift work was observed on the parameters of FBS, TG, SGPT, TSH, Physical activity, BMI, Sleep duration, PLT, and Sleep quality with beta coefficient values of 0.49, 0.33, 0.29, 0.29, 0.20, 0.18, 0.14, 0.13 and, 0.11, respectively (p-value < 0.01). The present study contributes to a growing body of evidence that blood and metabolic factors are likely to be influenced by shift work. Blood tests were conducted to assess lipid profile, glycemic profile, and anthropometric parameters, including BMI, waist circumference, and waist-to-height ratio. Results: Significant BMI changes were observed from baseline to 6 months across MD, KD, and Liraglutide groups (p < 0.05). KD exhibited notable reductions in waist circumference and waist-to-height ratio within the initial quarter (p < 0.05), with a significant triglyceride decrease after 6 months (p < 0.05), indicating its efficacy over MD. Liraglutide demonstrated a substantial reduction in HbA1c levels in the first quarter (p < 0.05). During the first three months, the ANOVA test on fasting blood glucose showed a statistically significant impact of the time variable (p < 0.05) rather than the specific treatments themselves (Liraglutide and KD), suggesting that adherence during the early stages of therapy may be more critical than treatment choice. Conclusions: Positive outcomes from targeted interventions, whether pharmacological or dietary should encourage the exploration of innovative, long-term strategies that include personalized treatment alternation. Objective: To investigate the metabolic changes during therapy of tocilizumab (TCZ) and methotrexate (MTX) in non-diabetic rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients and for the first time explore the associations between metabolic parameters and serum YKL-40 (sYKL-40) levels. Methods: We enrolled active non-diabetic RA patients who were refractory to MTX. Patients received intravenous TCZ (8 mg/kg) once every 4 weeks combined with MTX for 24 weeks. Metabolic parameters and sYKL-40 levels were measured before TCZ infusion at baseline, week 4, week 12, and week 24. Correlations were assessed by the Spearman's rank correlation analysis. Results: A total of 91 non-diabetic RA patients were enrolled in this study. At week 24, we observed a significant elevation in body mass index (BMI), total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and triglycerides (TG) levels. In contrast, there was a significant decrease in TC/HDL‑C ratio. No apparent changes in insulin resistance were found. Additionally, we detected a significant reduction in sYKL-40 levels during the study. At week 24, changes in sYKL-40 levels showed a significant negative correlation (r = -0.334, p = 0.002) with changes in TC levels. Conclusion: The combined therapy of TCZ and MTX resulted in a significant increase in BMI and lipid levels, while an evident decrease in the TC/HDL‑C ratio and sYKL-40 levels in RA patients. Additionally, there was a significant correlation between the decrease in sYKL-40 levels and the increase in TC levels during treatment with TCZ and MTX. Globally, the metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) holds the position as the most widespread chronic liver condition. Berberine (BBR) shows promise as a natural compound for managing obesity, hepatic steatosis, and metabolic disorders. The study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of BBR in addressing factors linked to MAFLD. This is a randomized, double-blind, and placebo-controlled clinical trial. Seventy individuals with MAFLD were enrolled in this study and randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio to two groups. BBR (1500 mg/day) or placebo was administrated orally for 12 weeks. Selected anthropometric, hepatic, and metabolic parameters were assessed. After a 12-week intervention, the BBR group demonstrated a statistically significant decrease in alanine transaminase (ALT) p=0.0105, and de Ritis ratio p=0.0011 compared to the control group. In both groups we observed a decrease in trunk fat (kg) - BBR group p=0.0185, and placebo group p=0.0323. After three months, a significant divergence between the BBR and placebo groups was evident in the alteration of D total cholesterol (TC) p=0.0009, favoring the BBR group. Nevertheless, there were no significant differences detected in other lipid and glucose parameters. In the BBR group, we found significant correlations between changes and amelioration of certain variables: D body mass index (BMI) correlated with DALT (r=0.47; p=0.0089) and D aspartate aminotransferase (AST) (r=0.47; p=0.0081) levels; D trunk fat with D fatty liver index (FLI) (r=0.55; p=0.0337), D homeostasis model assessment for insulin resistant index (HOMAIR) (r=0.37; p=0.0020), and AST (r=0.42; p=0.0202); D the de Ritis ratio correlated with D fibrosis-4 index (FIB-4) levels (r=0.59; p=0.0011); and DFLI correlated with DHOMA-IR (r=0.37; p=0.0409) and D visceral adiposity index (VAI) (r=0.54; p=0.0019), while no significant differences were observed in the Placebo group. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on obesity, metabolic parameters, and clinical values in the South Korean population. Data from the seventh and eighth National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys were analyzed, comprising 3560 participants in 2018 (pre-COVID-19) and 3309 participants in 2021 (post-COVID-19). The study focused on adults aged 19 years and older who were overweight (BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2). The results showed a significant increase in waist circumference (approximately 2 cm), BMI (approximately 0.11 kg/m2), systolic blood pressure, fasting blood sugar (1.76 mg/dL higher), and glycated hemoglobin (0.14% higher) in the post-COVID-19 group compared to the pre-COVID-19 group. Additionally, the prevalence of hypercholesterolemia increased by 4% after the COVID-19 pandemic. These findings suggest an increased risk of obesity, abdominal obesity, and metabolic disorders, such as blood sugar disorders, in the post-COVID-19 period. Urine analysis revealed abnormal findings, including occult blood, urobilinogen, hematuria, proteinuria, ketone urea, glycosuria, and bacteriuria. The modulation of glucose metabolism through dietary sources has been recognized as 1 of the most sustainable approaches for preventing of cardiometabolic diseases. Although fibers and phenolic compounds derived from jaboticaba (Plinia jaboticaba) peel have demonstrated improvements in metabolic pathways in preclinical models, their beneficial effects in clinical trials remain to be fully determined. This study aimed to assess the impact of jaboticaba peel (JP) powder supplementation on glucose metabolism compared with a placebo in individuals with metabolic syndrome (MetS). A single-blind, parallel, randomized, placebo-controlled trial involving 49 individuals with MetS was conducted. Participants were assigned to receive either a JP supplement (15 g/day) or a matched placebo. Anthropometry measurements, body composition, blood pressure, metabolic and inflammatory parameters, and a mixed-meal tolerance test were assessed at weeks 0 and 5. Daily intake of JP improved the area under the curve of glucose (P =.025) and the interleukin-6 (IL-6) (P =.045). No significant time × treatment effects were observed for blood pressure, body weight, body composition, lipid metabolism, glucagon-like peptide-1, inflammatory cytokines (tumor necrosis factor-α, IL-1β), C-reactive protein, and insulin sensitivity and resistance indexes. JP supplementation may be a promising approach for managing MetS disorders, potentially by reducing the area under the curve for glucose and the proinflammatory cytokine IL-6. The study explores the relationship between phase angle (PhA), an indicator of cellular health, and metabolic health parameters among junior sumo wrestlers in Japan. Given the demanding lifestyle and high‐energy diets of sumo wrestlers that predispose them to metabolic syndrome post‐retirement, this study focuses on a younger cohort. The primary aim is to evaluate if PhA could serve as an early indicator of metabolic health issues within this unique demographic. A total of 14 sumo wrestlers aged 9–17 years were assessed to determine the relationship between PhA and various metabolic markers, including glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), using a TANITA MC‐780A‐N body composition analyzer and standard blood tests. Bivariate regression analysis and Pearson's correlation revealed a negative relationship between PhA and HbA1c even after adjusting for age and weight (ß = −0.496, r2 = 0.776, r = −0.756, p = 0.004). The results indicate a significant negative relationship between PhA and HbA1c levels, suggesting that lower PhA values, which indicate poorer cellular integrity, are associated with higher HbA1c levels, signifying impaired glycemic control. Dynamic fluorescence molecular tomography (DFMT), as a noninvasive optical imaging method, can quantify metabolic parameters of living animal organs and assist in the diagnosis of metabolic diseases. However, existing DFMT methods do not have a high capacity to reconstruct abnormal metabolic regions, and require additional prior information and complicated solution methods. This paper introduces a problem decomposition and prior refactor (PDPR) method. The PDPR decomposes the metabolic parameters into two kinds of problems depending on their temporal coupling, which are solved using regularization and parameter fitting. Moreover, PDPR introduces the idea of divide‐and‐conquer to refactor prior information to ensure discrimination between metabolic abnormal regions and normal tissues. Experimental results show that PDPR is capable of separating abnormal metabolic regions of the liver and has the potential to quantify metabolic parameters and diagnose liver metabolic diseases in small animals. Objective: The present study investigated the predictive diseases progression value of preoperative fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) in patients with local advanced cervical cancer (LACC). Methods: In total, 267 patients [median age 58 (range: 27–85) years old] with LACC underwent 18F-FDG PET/CT prior to any treatment. The maximum standardized uptake values (SUVmax), metabolic tumor volume (MTV), and total lesion glycolysis (TLG) of the primary lesion and metastatic lymph nodes were measured on PET/CT and correlated with clinicopathological features and progression-free survival (PFS). Univariate analysis showed that FIGO stage, concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CRT), serum level of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and squamous cell carcinoma antigen (SCC-Ag), primary tumor MTV (pMTV) and TLG (pTLG), lymph nodes SUVmax (nSUVmax) and TLG (nTLG), and total metabolic activity (sMTV, sTLG) were associated with PFS. nSUVmax ≥ 5.29, CEA ≥ 7.11 ng/ml and deficiency of concurrent CRT were independent risk factor for PFS (p = 0.006, p = 0.008, p = 0.014). The 3-year PFS for patients with high nSUVmax were 42.2% compared to 56.3% for low nSUVmax values. Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) is a risk for developing cardiovascular diseases and its prevalence is especially high in psychiatric patients. To date, there is limited data from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on the prevalence of MetS. Therefore, we aimed to investigate its prevalence and possible risk factors in a large sample of psychiatric patients in the UAE. A cross-sectional study was conducted at Al-Ain Hospital, in Al-Ain City, UAE. We collected demographic and clinical data on patients diagnosed with schizophrenia, schizoaffective, and bipolar affective disorder in the period between January 2017 and December 2020. This included their secondary diagnosis (psychiatric or medical), vital signs (heart rate, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, Body Mass Index [BMI]), metabolic parameters (fasting blood glucose, cholesterol, triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein, high-density lipoproteins), and prescribed medications. We used the American Association of Clinical Endocrinology (AACE) criteria to diagnose MetS. We included 889 subjects and of these, 79.8% (N = 709) had a BMI ≥25 kg/m2 and 9.8% (N = 87) had no abnormal metabolic parameters. Overall, 28.1% (N = 250) had MetS with no statistical difference between the three groups. Fasting blood glucose levels and abnormally elevated triglycerides were significant predictors for MetS. Our study found that around one in three patients had MetS irrespective of the three diagnoses. Some variables were significant predictors for MetS. Our findings were consistent with other studies and warrant the need for regular screening and management of abnormal metabolic parameters. There is no statistical difference between schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, and bipolar disorder with regards to the prevalence of metabolic syndrome. Our study evaluated the prognostic value of the metabolic parameters and textural features in pretreatment 18F-Fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (18F-FDG PET/CT) of primary lesions for pediatric patients with neuroblastoma. In total, 107 pediatric patients with neuroblastoma who underwent pretreatment 18F-FDG PET/CT were retrospectively included and analyzed. All patients were diagnosed by pathology, and baseline characteristics and clinical data were collected. The four metabolic parameters and 43 textural features of 18F-FDG PET/CT of the primary lesions were measured. The prognostic significance of metabolic parameters and other clinical variables was assessed using Cox proportional hazards regression models. Differences in progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) in relation to parameters were examined using the Kaplan–Meier method. During a median follow-up period of 34.3 months, 45 patients (42.1%) experienced tumor recurrence or progression, and 21 patients (19.6%) died of cancer. In univariate Cox regression analysis, age, location of disease, International Neuroblastoma Risk Group Staging System (INRGSS) stage M, neuron-specific enolase (NSE), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), four positron emission tomography (PET) metabolic parameters, and 33 textural features were significant predictors of PFS. In multivariate analysis, INRGSS stage M (hazard ratio [HR] = 19.940, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 2.733–145.491, P = 0.003), skewness (＞0.173; PET first-order features; HR = 2.938, 95% CI = 1.389–6.215, P = 0.005), coarseness (＞0.003; neighborhood gray-tone difference matrix; HR = 0.253, 95% CI = 0.132–0.484, P ＜ 0.001), and variance (＞103.837; CT first-order gray histogram parameters; HR = 2.810, 95% CI = 1.160–6.807, P = 0.022) were independent predictors of PFS. In univariate Cox regression analysis, gender, INRGSS stage M, MYCN amplification, NSE, LDH, two PET metabolic parameters, and five textural features were significant predictors of OS. In multivariate analysis, INRGSS stage M (HR = 7.704, 95% CI = 1.031–57.576, P = 0.047), MYCN amplification (HR = 3.011, 95% CI = 1.164–7.786, P = 0.023), and metabolic tumor volume (＞138.788; HR = 3.930, 95% CI = 1.317–11.727, P = 0.014) were independent predictors of OS. ABSTRACT: To investigate the effects of supplemental monensin administration on the metabolic responses of dairy cows, a systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis were conducted. Initially, 604 studies were identified through comprehensive database searches, including Google Scholar, Scopus, Science Direct, and PubMed, using key words related to dairy cows, monensin, and metabolic outcomes. After a 2-stage screening process, 51 articles with a total of 60 experiments were selected for meta-analysis based on criteria such as study implementation date between 2001 and 2022, presence of a control group that did not receive monensin supplementation, reporting of at least 1 outcome variable, and presentation of means and corresponding errors. The meta-analysis used the 1-stage random-effects method, and sensitivity analyses were performed to assess the robustness of the results. The results showed that the administration of monensin at a dosage of 19 to 26 mg/kg was inversely related to methane emissions and that the administration of monensin at a dosage of 18 to 50 mg/kg resulted in a significant decrease in dry matter intake. Administration of monensin at doses of 13 to 28 and 15 to 24 mg/kg also resulted in a significant decrease in ruminal acetate proportion and an increase in propionate proportion, respectively, with no effects on ruminal butyrate, NH3, or pH levels. We found no effects on blood parameters or nitrogen retention, but a significant negative correlation was observed between monensin supplementation and fecal nitrogen excretion. Based on the analysis of all variables evaluated, the optimal dose range of monensin was estimated to be 19 to 24 mg/kg.

Background and Objectives: Obesity is associated with numerous co-morbidities, including dyslipidemia, insulin resistance and diabetes mellitus. Bariatric surgery is the mainstay of treatment for obesity as the only method with confirmed long-term effects in weight reduction and the remission of comorbidities. Postoperative recommendations leading to changes in dietary habits and changes in digestion and absorption in the gastrointestinal tract after bariatric surgery may additionally influence the levels of laboratory parameters that reflect the metabolic and nutritional status. The purpose of the study was to analyze the possible influence of changes in dietary habits after bariatric surgery on those laboratory results that reflect the metabolic and nutritional status. Materials and Methods: This was a retrospective study of 88 patients with a history of bariatric surgery. Data were gathered from before the surgery and at 6 months after the surgery and included diet structure and selected laboratory parameters reflecting the metabolic and nutritional status, i.e., levels of fasting glucose, glycated hemoglobin, cholesterol, low- and high-density lipoproteins, triglycerides, alanine and aspartate aminotransferases, proteins, ferrum, ferritin, vitamin B12, folic acid, vitamin D and calcium, the red blood cell count and the hematocrit. Results: Postoperative festive glucose levels were reduced by 14% and were more significant in patients after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. There was an increase of 22% in concentrations of high-density lipoproteins. Triglyceride concentrations were reduced by 32%. Aminotransferase levels decreased by 43% for alanine aminotransferase and by 14% for aspartate aminotransferase. Among the changes in dietary habits, post-bariatric patients had a reduced consumption of red meat and an increased consumption of fish, milk and dairy products and wholegrain products. Vitamin D and ferrum levels were higher after the surgery, whereas vitamin B12 and folic acid levels remained unchanged. Conclusions: Improved dietary habits of patients after bariatric surgery may lead to changes in laboratory parameters that reflect the ameliorated metabolic and nutritional status of patients after bariatric surgery.

Background/objective: Obesity and overweight have become growing health-related issues worldwide, which also applies to Poland. Excess fat mass is associated with an increased risk of metabolic and non-metabolic complications. The aim of our pre–post-designed study was to assess the effect of behavioral intervention on body weight, fat mass and anthropometric and metabolic parameters in obese and overweight individuals. Methods: The study included one hundred people (85 women) with excess fat mass who voluntarily declared their willingness to participate in the weight-loss program consisted of 12 weeks of the DASH diet combined with regular, supervised physical activity. Anthropometric measurements and laboratory tests were performed in all study participants, and anthropometric and metabolic indices were calculated at baseline and after three months of treatment. Results: Body weight decreased significantly by 5.63 ± 4.03 kg, BMI by 2.06 ± 1.44 kg/m2, waist circumference by 5.6 ± 3.7 cm, fat mass from 40.04 ± 6.90 to 36.56 ± 7.07% and uric acid level by 16.0 ± 41.6 μmol/L (p < 0.001 in all cases). We also found an improvement in lipid profile and anthropometric and metabolic indices, except for HDL cholesterol and plasma glucose levels. Conclusions: The effect of the DASH diet and supervised physical activity was beneficial regardless of age, sex and the presence of hypertension or dysglycemia at baseline. The implementation of a healthy lifestyle was associated with a significant improvement in anthropometric and metabolic parameters, which, if continued, may reduce the risk of unfavorable health-related outcomes in the future.

Simple Summary: This study was undertaken to evaluate the effects of a single subcutaneous dose of 500 mg rbST on the lipid profile, liver and kidney function, and physical, chemical, and cellular constitution of buffalo milk. Our data indicated that the use of rbST in buffalo from the 100th day of lactation is metabolically safe since the treatment neither caused imbalances in fat metabolism nor overloaded the liver or renal function. The changes in milk composition were transient and limited to a decrease in milk protein. The use of recombinant bovine somatotropin (rbST) leads to an increase in variable amounts of milk production in buffalo, but there is a lack of information on the influence of rbST on their metabolism. This study looked at the effects of a single 500 mg dose of rbST on the lipid profile, liver and kidney function, and physical, chemical, and cellular constitution of milk in 14 buffalo over 14 days, from the 100th day of lactation, compared with 14 animals in a control group. From the first day after rbST, there was a rise in beta-hydroxybutyrate (β-HBO), possibly due to higher dry matter intake or the biotransformation of NEFA into β-HBO. The treatment did not influence blood glucose, non-esterified fatty acids (NEFAs), triglycerides, cholesterol, total protein, albumin, AST, GGT, bilirubin, urea, or creatinine levels. In 71.3% of the buffalo, there was a gradual increase in milk production, with the maximal response occurring in the first week followed by a gradual decrease, whilst in 21.4%, the increase in production occurred between 7 and 10 days. Only 7.1% of the animals did not respond. On the 3rd, 5th, 7th, and 10th days after treatment, an increase was found in daily milk production between the two groups equal to 1.04, 1.52, 1.42, and 1.06 L, respectively. In relative terms, this means an increase in milk production, respectively, of 15.1%, 21.0%, 19.8%, and 15.1%. The constitution of the milk showed no difference in the amounts of fat, lactose, total solids, or somatic cell count; however, on the third day after rbST administration, there was a decrease in protein. Notably, from the fifth day, the protein values showed no statistical difference. It can be concluded that the use of rbST in buffalo from the 100th day of lactation is metabolically safe since the treatment neither caused imbalances in fat metabolism nor overloaded the liver or renal function, and the changes in milk composition were transient and limited to a decrease in milk protein. Background: Following changes in primary tumor (T) and lymph node (N) staging for nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) in the Eighth Edition AJCC Cancer Staging Manual, simplification of T staging has been proposed. However, a limited range of 2-deoxy-2-[fluorine-18] fluoro- D -glucose positron emission tomography–computed tomography (18F-FDG PET–CT) metabolic parameters has been investigated. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the primary tumor invasiveness and the lymph node metastasis (LNM) of NPC from a metabolic perspective. Methods: A total of 435 NPC patients underwent 18F-FDG PET/CT before treatment were retrospectively examined. The primary endpoint was differences in standard uptake value (SUV), lean body mass-normalized SUV (SUL), body surface area-normalized SUV (SUS), glucose-normalized SUV (GN), metabolic tumor volume (MTV), total lesion glycolysis (TLG), and glucose-normalized total lesion glycolysis (GNTLG) of primary tumors and LNM between different T and N stages. The metabolic parameters associated with T and N staging were identified. Results: There were significant differences between all parameters relative to the primary tumor but no significant differences in any parameter relative to the LNM and T stages. Higher mean values of TGNmax, TGNmean, TSUVpeak, and TSUSmax were associated with advanced T stages. Higher mean values of all the LNM parameters were associated with more advanced N stages. Only primary tumor metabolic tumor volume (TMTV), TSUVpeak, TSULmax, and TSUSmax showed a significant positive association with T staging, while lymph node metabolic tumor volume (LNMTV) and TSUSmax were significantly positive in N staging. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that metabolic parameters are useful indicators of tumor invasiveness and LNM based on the Eighth Edition manual. Compared with volume-dependent parameters, TGNmax, TGNmean, TSUVpeak, and TSUSmax may be better indicators of local tumor aggressiveness. SUSmax of the primary tumor was associated with LNM. Introduction: Weight loss has been identified as a key strategy for improving glycemic and metabolic outcomes in people with type 2 diabetes (T2D). However, the long-term, real-world impact of weight loss on these outcomes remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate (1) the association between weight loss and glycemic control, (2) association between weight loss and metabolic parameters, and (3) predictors of weight loss and how weight change trajectory varies based on index body mass index (BMI). Methods: A retrospective, longitudinal cohort study using the linked IQVIA Ambulatory electronic medical records and PharMetrics® Plus databases was performed from January 1, 2010 through December 31, 2019 in adults with T2D. Participants were categorized into 1-year and 5-year follow-up cohorts based on their observed weight change over time. Longitudinal values for vital signs and laboratory parameters, including BMI, weight, glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), and metabolic parameters (liver enzymes and cholesterol), were reported at index date and every 6 months post index date. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate the factors associated with weight loss. Results: Of 1,493,964 people evaluated, 1,061,354 (71%) and 308,320 (20.6%) were classified into the 1-year and 5-year follow-up cohorts. Average HbA1c reductions of 1.2% and 0.5% were observed among people who lost ≥ 15% of index weight in the 1-year and 5-year follow-up cohorts, respectively. Higher weight loss percentages were associated with numerically greater improvements in metabolic parameters. The presence of bariatric surgery and higher index BMIs were identified as the strongest predictors of ≥ 15% and ≥ 10% weight loss in both follow-up cohorts. Conclusion: Results from this study suggest that modest and sustained weight loss can lead to clinically meaningful improvements in glycemic and metabolic parameters among people with T2D. Purpose: Subclinical hypothyroidism is an early, mild form of hypothyroidism that may progress to overt hypothyroidism if untreated. The current study aimed to assess the effects of vitamin D supplementation on hormonal (thyroid stimulating hormone [TSH], triiodothyronine, thyroxine, and free thyroxine) parameters, lipid profiles, serum irisin, and obesity indices in women with subclinical hypothyroidism. Methods: The present randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial was carried out on 44 women with subclinical hypothyroidism. The participants were allocated to two groups (22 patients in each group) that received vitamin D (50,000 IU/week) or placebo for 12 weeks. Fasting blood samples, anthropometric and body composition measurements, physical activity levels, and dietary intakes were collected at baseline and at the end of the study. Results: Vitamin D supplementation significantly decreased TSH, total cholesterol, and fat mass percentage, and significantly increased serum vitamin D and irisin levels and fat-free mass percentage compared to the control group (all, p<0.05). Changes in thyroid hormones, other lipid profiles, and anthropometric indices were not significantly different between the groups. Conclusion: Our study indicates that vitamin D administration improves serum TSH, total cholesterol, irisin, and body composition in women with subclinical hypothyroidism. To evaluate the efficacy of dietary supplementation with a combination of antioxidants (lipoic acid, N-acetylcysteine, vitamin B6, and S-adenosyl-L-methionine) for the modulation of metabolic, endocrine, and clinical parameters in comparison with oral contraception in non-diabetic women newly diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). This was a prospective, partially randomized, multicenter study in which non-diabetic women with PCOS were recruited under routine clinical practice conditions and distributed in three groups to receive the following regimen for 6 months: 1) antioxidant combination (MN group); 2) oral contraception (OC group); or 3) oral contraception and the antioxidant combination (MN + OC group). General recommendation of healthy diet and regular exercise was given to all patients. Metabolic, endocrine, clinical, and quality of life parameters were recorded at baseline and after 6 months of therapy. A total of 96 women with PCOS were included in the study. After 6 months of treatment, the homeostasis model assessment-estimated insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) level was reduced only in the MN group, with a significant mean reduction of −0.92 points. Androstenedione was significantly reduced in all groups. Clinical parameters that significantly improved in all groups were hirsutism, acne, irregular menstruation, and quality of life, with no statistical differences between the groups. This study showed that the antioxidant combination might be a suitable therapy for patients with PCOS when oral contraceptive is not indicated, because in all groups clinical parameters, irregular menstruation as well as androstenedione and quality of life were significantly improved with no statistical difference between groups. Abstract The study explores the relationship between phase angle (PhA), an indicator of cellular health, and metabolic health parameters among junior sumo wrestlers in Japan. Given the demanding lifestyle and high‐energy diets of sumo wrestlers that predispose them to metabolic syndrome post‐retirement, this study focuses on a younger cohort. The primary aim is to evaluate if PhA could serve as an early indicator of metabolic health issues within this unique demographic. A total of 14 sumo wrestlers aged 9–17 years were assessed to determine the relationship between PhA and various metabolic markers, including glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), using a TANITA MC‐780A‐N body composition analyzer and standard blood tests. Bivariate regression analysis and Pearson's correlation revealed a negative relationship between PhA and HbA1c even after adjusting for age and weight (ß = −0.496, r2 = 0.776, r = −0.756, p = 0.004). The results indicate a significant negative relationship between PhA and HbA1c levels, suggesting that lower PhA values, which indicate poorer cellular integrity, are associated with higher HbA1c levels, signifying impaired glycemic control. These findings underscore the potential of PhA as a valuable biomarker for monitoring metabolic health in young sumo wrestlers, with implications for early intervention and management strategies.

A combination of liver and heart dysfunction worsens the prognosis of human survival. The aim of this study was to investigate whether empagliflozin (a sodium-glucose transporter-2 inhibitor) has beneficial effects not only on cardiac and renal function but also on hepatic function. Adult (6-month-old) male spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) were fed a high-fat diet (60% fat) for four months to induce hepatic steatosis and mild heart failure. For the last two months, the rats were treated with empagliflozin (empa, 10 mg.kg-1.day-1 in the drinking water). Renal function and oral glucose tolerance test were analyzed in control (n=8), high-fat diet (SHR+HF, n=10), and empagliflozin-treated (SHR+HF+empa, n=9) SHR throughout the study. Metabolic parameters and echocardiography were evaluated at the end of the experiment. High-fat diet feeding increased body weight and visceral adiposity, liver triglyceride and cholesterol concentrations, and worsened glucose tolerance. Although the high-fat diet did not affect renal function, it significantly worsened cardiac function in a subset of SHR rats. Empagliflozin reduced body weight gain but not visceral fat deposition. It also improved glucose sensitivity and several metabolic parameters (plasma insulin, uric acid, and HDL cholesterol). In the liver, empagliflozin reduced ectopic lipid accumulation, lipoperoxidation, inflammation and pro-inflammatory HETEs, while increasing anti-inflammatory EETs. In addition, empagliflozin improved cardiac function (systolic, diastolic and pumping) independent of blood pressure. The results of our study suggest that hepatoprotection plays a decisive role in the beneficial effects of empagliflozin in preventing the progression of cardiac dysfunction induced by high-fat diet feeding.

Abstract Background The health benefits of dietary polyphenol intake (DPI) including improved lipid profiles, blood pressure, insulin resistance, and reduced systemic inflammation has revealed previously. However, the results of numerous studies are not consistent and it seems that these health effects are attributed to some of DPI. In the current research, we evaluated the health benefits of DPI on metabolic markers and glycemic markers among overweight and obese individuals. Methods In this cross-sectional study, 487 individuals with overweight and obesity were participated. Dietary intake was assessed by a Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) and the amount of dietary polyphenol intake were calculated based on the information derived from Phenol-Explorer database ( www.phenolexplorer.eu/contents ). Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) was used to measure body composition. Systolic and diastolic blood pressures were measured by sphygmomanometer. Biochemical assays including fasting blood sugar, insulin and serum lipids’ concentrations were measured by enzymatic methods. Results According to our results, males were more likely to be at the highest tertile of DPI (P = 0.04). Background and objective In recent years, immunotherapy represented by programmed cell death 1 (PD-1)/programmed cell death ligand 1 (PD-L1) immunosuppressants has greatly changed the status of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) treatment. PD-L1 has become an important biomarker for screening NSCLC immunotherapy beneficiaries, but how to easily and accurately detect whether PD-L1 is expressed in NSCLC patients is a difficult problem for clinicians. The aim of this study was to construct a Nomogram prediction model of PD-L1 expression in NSCLC patients based on 18F-fluorodeoxy glucose (18F-FDG) positron emission tomography/conputed tomography (PET/CT) metabolic parameters and to evaluate its predictive value. Methods Retrospective collection of 18F-FDG PET/CT metabolic parameters, clinicopathological information and PD-L1 test results of 155 NSCLC patients from Inner Mongolia People's Hospital between September 2016 and July 2021. The patients were divided into the training group (n=117) and the internal validation group (n=38), and another 51 cases of NSCLC patients in our hospital between August 2021 and July 2022 were collected as the external validation group according to the same criteria. Then all of them were categorized according to the results of PD-L1 assay into PD-L1+ group and PD-L1- group. The metabolic parameters and clinicopathological information of patients in the training group were analyzed by univariate and binary Logistic regression, and a Nomogram prediction model was constructed based on the screened independent influencing factors. The effect of the model was evaluated by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, calibration curve and decision curve analysis (DCA) in both the training group and the internal and external validation groups. Results Binary Logistic regression analysis showed that metabolic tumor volume (MTV), gender and tumor diameter were independent influences on PD-L1 expression. Then a Nomogram prediction model was constructed based on the above independent influences. The ROC curve for the model in the training group shows an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.769 (95%CI: 0.683-0.856) with an optimal cutoff value of 0.538. The AUC was 0.775 (95%CI: 0.614-0.936) in the internal validation group and 0.752 (95%CI: 0.612-0.893) in the external validation group. The calibration curves were tested by the Hosmer-Lemeshow test and showed that the training group (χ2=0.040, P=0.979), the internal validation group (χ2=2.605, P=0.271), and the external validation group (χ2=0.396, P=0.820) were well calibrated. The DCA curves show that the model provides clinical benefit to patients over a wide range of thresholds (training group: 0.00-0.72, internal validation group: 0.00-0.87, external validation group: 0.00-0.66). Conclusion The Nomogram prediction model constructed on the basis of 18F-FDG PET/CT metabolic parameters has greater application value in predicting PD-L1 expression in NSCLC patients.

The English databases included PubMed, Web of Science, EMbase, and Cochrane Library, however, Chinese databases included Chinese Biology Medicine (CBM), VIP, Wanfang, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI). All database searches were due by May 31, 2023. Using Review Manager 5.4 software, a meta-analysis was conducted following a literature review and data extraction.Results: This study included five RCTs involving 1781 patients. Regarding safety, the meta-analysis revealed that the probability of weight gain was reduced in the OLZ and SAM group than in the OLZ group (RR = 0.83, 95% CI (0.69, 0.99), P < 0.05). Statistically, the incidence of severe adverse safety events, dry mouth, headache, drowsiness, death, and suicidal perception events was insignificant (P > 0.05); in terms of metabolism, compared with the OLZ group, the OLZ plus SAM group reduced total cholesterol (TC) levels (MD = − 3.58, 95% CI (− 6.81, − 0.34), P < 0.05). However, it had no significant effect on metabolic indices, including low-density lipoprotein (LDL), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), triglycerides, glucose, and insulin index (P > 0.05).Conclusion: In patients with SCZ, treatment with the combination of OLZ and SAM decreased the incidence of weight gain adverse events and TC levels; nevertheless, it did not affect other adverse events or metabolic parameters. These findings provide clinicians with evidence-based guidance and support for drug selection. Abstract Background Recent studies have revealed some conflicting results about the health effects of caffeine. These studies are inconsistent in terms of design and population and source of consumed caffeine. In the current study, we aimed to evaluate the possible health effects of dietary caffeine intake among overweight and obese individuals. Methods In this cross-sectional study, 488 apparently healthy individuals with overweight and obesity were participated. Dietary intake was assessed by a Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) and the amount of dietary caffeine was calculated. Body composition was determined by bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). Enzymatic methods were used to evaluate serum lipid, glucose, and insulin concentrations. Results Those at the highest tertile of dietary caffeine intake had lower percentage of fat mass, higher fat free mass and appetite score (P
