Abstract

Primary extracranial meningiomas occur very rarely. We present a rare case of extracranial meningioma of the transitional variant which was excised satisfactorily. There was no suggestion of any connection to the intracranial compartment or cranial nerves. The underlying galea was uninvolved, suggesting the true extracranial nature of this tumour. This rare diagnosis should nonetheless be kept in the differential diagnosis of scalp tumors.

3. Low-temperature Condensation of Carbon

Abstract

Two different types of experiments were performed. In the first experiment, we studied the low-temperature condensation of vaporized graphite inside bulk liquid helium, while in the second experiment, we studied the condensation of single carbon atoms together with H$_2$, H$_2$O, and CO molecules inside helium nanodroplets. The condensation of vaporized graphite leads to the formation of partially graphitized carbon, which indicates high temperatures, supposedly higher than 1000{\deg}C, during condensation. Possible underlying processes responsible for the instant rise in temperature during condensation are discussed. This suggests that such processes cause the presence of partially graphitized carbon dust formed by low-temperature condensation in the diffuse interstellar medium. Alternatively, in the denser regions of the ISM, the condensation of carbon atoms together with the most abundant interstellar molecules (H$_2$, H$_2$O, and CO), leads to the formation of complex organic molecules (COMs) and finally organic polymers. Water molecules were found not to be involved directly in the reaction network leading to the formation of COMs. It was proposed that COMs are formed via the addition of carbon atoms to H$_2$ and CO molecules $(C + H_2 \rightarrow HCH, HCH + CO \rightarrow OCCH_2)$. Due to the involvement of molecular hydrogen, the formation of COMs by carbon addition reactions should be more efficient at high extinctions compared with the previously proposed reaction scheme with atomic hydrogen., Comment: 24 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

We report the first observation of cations, dications and trications of large clusters of adamantane. Cluster formation was initiated near 0 K in helium droplets and ionization was achieved with one or more collisions with energetic He species (He$^{\star}$, He$^{+}$ or He$^{\star}$$^{-}$). The occurrence of Coulomb explosion appeared to discriminate against the formation of small multiply charged clusters. High resolution mass spectrometry revealed the presence of "magic number" m/z peaks that can be attributed to the packing of adamantane molecules into cluster structures of special stability involving preferred arrangements of these molecules. These abundance anomalies were seen to be independent of charge state. While some dehydrogenation of adamantane and its clusters was seen as well, no major transformations into adamantoids or microdiamonds were observed., Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

This prospective comparative study was carried out with the hypothesis that, in post operative oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (PO-OCSCC) receiving adjuvant RT alone without concurrent chemotherapy, sparing DARS with dysphagia optimized IMRT (Do-IMRT) may lead to less acute and late dysphagia related toxicity than standard IMRT (S-IMRT). We had earlier reported acute toxicities. Herein, we report long term dysphagia related and clinical outcome of this study cohort. Between February 2020 and June 2022, 56 PO-SCC patients without indications of concurrent chemotherapy (margin negative/no extra-nodal extension) were alternatively allocated into adjuvant Do-IMRT (n = 28) or S-IMRT (n = 28) arms. High risk and low risk planning target volumes received 60 Gray and 54 Gray respectively in 30 fractions over 6 weeks. Acute toxicities were assessed as per the CTCAE v5.0 and RTOG Late Morbidity Scoring Schema were used for late toxicities. Loco-regional control (LRC) was evaluated using Kaplan Meier method. Male: Female ratio for the entire cohort was 48:8. Rest of the patient characteristics is summarized in Table 1. 36.9 months was the median follow-up period (range = 15-48 months). When comparing Do-IMRT vs S-IMRT, Grade 1 and Grade 2 late dysphagia at 3 years were 12.3% vs. 26.8% (p = 0.07) and 0% vs. 22% (p = 0.023), respectively; Grade 1 and grade 2 xerostomia were 25.7% vs. 15.4% (p = 0.34) and 8.2% vs. 16.3% (p = 0.48) respectively. Grade 1 subcutaneous fibrosis was observed in 3 patients in the Do-IMRT arm and 4 patients in the S-IMRT arm. Dmean of ≥50 Gray to superior and middle pharyngeal constrictor muscle, supraglottic larynx; Dmean ≥40 Gray for inferior pharyngeal constrictor and ≥45 Gray for glottic larynx (GL) correlated with higher late grade ≥ 2 dysphagia (all p<0.05). 3-year LRC was 79.8% in Do-IMRT and 73.6% in S-IMRT (p = 0.32). Sparing DARS with Do-IMRT leads to lesser late dysphagia in PO-OCSCC patients without compromising loco-regional control as compared to S-IMRT. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
