Search

The Integrated Sachs-Wolfe (ISW) effect probes the late-time expansion history of the universe, offering direct constraints on dark energy. Here we present our measurements of the ISW signal at redshifts of $\bar{z}=0.35$, $0.55$ and $0.68$, using the cross-correlation of the Planck CMB temperature map with $\sim0.5$ million Luminous Red Galaxies (LRGs) selected from the VST ATLAS survey. We then combine these with previous measurements based on WMAP and similar SDSS LRG samples, providing a total sample of $\sim2.1$ million LRGs covering $\sim12000$ deg$^2$ of sky. At $\bar{z}=0.35$ and $\bar{z}=0.55$ we detect the ISW signal at $1.2\sigma$ and $2.3\sigma$ (or $2.6\sigma$ combined), in agreement with the predictions of $\Lambda$CDM. We verify these results by repeating the measurements using the BOSS LOWZ and CMASS, spectroscopically confirmed LRG samples. We also detect the ISW effect in three magnitude limited ATLAS+SDSS galaxy samples extending to $z\approx0.4$ at $\sim2\sigma$ per sample. However, we do not detect the ISW signal at $\bar{z}=0.68$ when combining the ATLAS and SDSS results. Further tests using spectroscopically confirmed eBOSS LRGs at this redshift remain inconclusive due to the current low sky coverage of the survey. If the ISW signal is shown to be redshift dependent in a manner inconsistent with the predictions of $\Lambda$CDM, it could open the door to alternative theories such as modified gravity. We present results from a survey of galaxies in the fields of six z>3 Damped Lyman alpha systems (DLAs) using the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) at the Very Large Telescope (VLT). We report a high detection rate of up to ~80% of galaxies within 1000 km/s from DLAs and with impact parameters between 25 and 280 kpc. In particular, we discovered 5 high-confidence Lyman alpha emitters associated with three DLAs, plus up to 9 additional detections across five of the six fields. The majority of the detections are at relatively large impact parameters (>50 kpc) with two detections being plausible host galaxies. Among our detections, we report four galaxies associated with the most metal-poor DLA in our sample (Z/Z_sun = -2.33), which trace an overdense structure resembling a filament. By comparing our detections with predictions from the Evolution and Assembly of GaLaxies and their Environments (EAGLE) cosmological simulations and a semi-analytic model designed to reproduce the observed bias of DLAs at z>2, we conclude that our observations are consistent with a scenario in which a significant fraction of DLAs trace the neutral regions within halos with a characteristic mass of 10^11-10^12 M_sun, in agreement with the inference made from the large-scale clustering of DLAs. We finally show how larger surveys targeting ~25 absorbers have the potential of constraining the characteristic masses of halos hosting high-redshift DLAs with sufficient accuracy to discriminate between different models., Comment: Submitted to MNRAS. 23 pages, 15 figures plus appendices

Riess et al (2018c) have claimed there exist seven problems in the analyses presented by Shanks et al (2018) where we argue that there is enough uncertainty in Cepheid distances and local peculiar velocity fields to explain the current tension in $H_0$. Here, we take each of the Riess et al (2018c) points in turn and suggest that either they do not apply or that the necessary caveats are already made by Shanks et al (2018). We conclude that the main point to be inferred from our analyses still stands which is that previous claims by Riess et al (2018b) that Gaia parallaxes confirm their Cepheid scale are, at best, premature in advance of further improvements in the Gaia astrometric solution., Comment: 3 pages, 1 figure

There is an $\approx9\pm2.5$\% tension between the value of Hubble's Constant, $H_0=67.4\pm0.5$km\,s$^{-1}$Mpc$^{-1}$, implied by the {\it Planck} microwave background power spectrum and that given by the distance scale of $H_0=73.4\pm1.7$km\,s$^{-1}$Mpc$^{-1}$. But with a plausible assumption about a {\it Gaia} DR2 parallax systematic offset, we find that {\it Gaia} parallax distances of Milky Way Cepheid calibrators are $\approx12-15$\% longer than previously estimated. Similarly, {\it Gaia} also implies $\approx4.7\pm1.7$\% longer distances for 46 Cepheids than previous distances on the scale of Riess et al. Then we show that the existence of an $\approx150$h$^{-1}$Mpc `Local Hole' in the galaxy distribution implies an outflow of $\approx500$km\,s$^{-1}$. Accounting for this in the recession velocities of SNIa standard candles out to $z\approx0.15$ reduces $H_0$ by a further $\approx1.8$\%. Combining the above two results would reduce the distance scale $H_0$ estimate by $\approx7$\% from $H_0\approx73.4\pm1.7$ to $\approx68.9\pm1.6$ km\,s$^{-1}$Mpc$^{-1}$, in reasonable agreement with the {\it Planck} value. The rare close projection of two quasars on the sky provides the opportunity to study the host galaxy environment of a foreground quasar in absorption against the continuum emission of a background quasar. For over a decade the "Quasars probing quasars" series has utilized this technique to further the understanding of galaxy formation and evolution in the presence of a quasar at z>2, resolving scales as small as a galactic disc and from bound gas in the circumgalactic medium to the diffuse environs of intergalactic space. Presented here, is the public release of the quasar pair spectral database utilized in these studies. In addition to projected pairs at z>2, the database also includes quasar pair members at z<2, gravitational lens candidates and quasars closely separated in redshift that are useful for small-scale clustering studies. In total the database catalogs 5627 distinct objects, with 4083 lying within 5' of at least one other source. A spectral library contains 3582 optical and near-infrared spectra for 3028 of the cataloged sources. As well as reporting on 54 newly discovered quasar pairs, we outline the key contributions made by this series over the last ten years, summarize the imaging and spectroscopic data used for target selection, discuss the target selection methodologies, describe the database content and explore some avenues for future work. We compare our analysis of the Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) feature in the correlation functions of SDSS BOSS DR12 LOWZ and CMASS galaxy samples with the findings of arXiv:1509.06371v2. Using subsets of the data we obtain an empirical estimate of the errors on the correlation functions which are in agreement with the simulated errors of arXiv:1509.06371v2. We find that the significance of BAO detection is the quantity most sensitive to the choice of the fitting range with the CMASS value decreasing from $8.0\sigma$ to $5.3\sigma$ as the fitting range is reduced. Although our measurements of $D_V(z)$ are in agreement with those of arXiv:1509.06371v2, we note that their CMASS $8.0\sigma$ (LOWZ $4.0\sigma$) detection significance reduces to $4.7\sigma$ ($2.8\sigma$) in fits with their diagonal covariance terms only. We extend our BAO analysis to higher redshifts by fitting to the weighted mean of 2QDESp, SDSS DR5 UNIFORM, 2QZ and 2SLAQ quasar correlation functions, obtaining a $7.6\%$ measurement compared to $3.9\%$ achieved by eBOSS DR14. Unlike for the LRG surveys, the larger error on quasar correlation functions implies a smaller role for nuisance parameters (accounting for scale-dependent clustering) in providing a good fit to the fiducial $\Lambda$CDM model. Again using only the error bars of arXiv:1705.06373v2 and ignoring any off-diagonal covariance matrix terms, we find that the eBOSS peak significance reduces from 2.8 to $1.4\sigma$. We present new observations acquired with the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer instrument on the Very Large Telescope in a quasar field that hosts a high column-density damped Ly{\alpha} absorber (DLA) at z~3.25. We detect Ly{\alpha} emission from a nebula at the redshift of the DLA with line luminosity (27+/-1)x1e41 erg/s, which extends over 37+/-1 kpc above a surface brightness limit of 6x1e-19 erg/s/cm2/arcsec2 at a projected distance of 30.5+/-0.5 kpc from the quasar sightline. Two clumps lie inside this nebula, both with Ly{\alpha} rest-frame equivalent width > 50 A and with relative line-of-sight velocities aligned with two main absorption components seen in the DLA spectrum. In addition, we identify a compact galaxy at a projected distance of 19.1+/-0.5 kpc from the quasar sightline. The galaxy spectrum is noisy but consistent with that of a star-forming galaxy at the DLA redshift. We argue that the Ly{\alpha} nebula is ionized by radiation from star formation inside the two clumps, or by radiation from the compact galaxy. In either case, these data imply the presence of a structure with size >>50 kpc inside which galaxies are assembling, a picture consistent with galaxy formation in groups and filaments as predicted by cosmological simulations such as the EAGLE simulations., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures. We report the results of the 2dF-VST ATLAS Cold Spot galaxy redshift survey (2CSz) based on imaging from VST ATLAS and spectroscopy from 2dF AAOmega over the core of the CMB Cold Spot. We sparsely surveyed the inner 5$^{\circ}$ radius of the Cold Spot to a limit of $i_{AB} \le 19.2$, sampling $\sim7000$ galaxies at $z<0.4$. We have found voids at $z=$ 0.14, 0.26 and 0.30 but they are interspersed with small over-densities and the scale of these voids is insufficient to explain the Cold Spot through the $\Lambda$CDM ISW effect. Combining with previous data out to $z\sim1$, we conclude that the CMB Cold Spot could not have been imprinted by a void confined to the inner core of the Cold Spot. Additionally we find that our 'control' field GAMA G23 shows a similarity in its galaxy redshift distribution to the Cold Spot. Since the GAMA G23 line-of-sight shows no evidence of a CMB temperature decrement we conclude that the Cold Spot may have a primordial origin rather than being due to line-of-sight effects., Comment: Submitted to MNRAS

The Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) has created a knowledge gap between the Northern and the Southern hemispheres which is very marked for white dwarfs: only $\simeq 15$% of the known white dwarfs are south of the equator. Here we make use of the VST ATLAS survey, one of the first surveys obtaining deep, optical, multi-band photometry over a large area of the southern skies, to remedy this situation. Applying the colour and proper-motion selection developed in Gentile Fusillo et al. (2015a) to the most recent internal data release (2016 April 25) of VST ATLAS we created a catalogue of $\simeq 4200$ moderately bright ($g\leq19$), high-confidence southern white dwarf candidates, which can be followed up individually with both the large array of southern telescopes or in bulk with forthcoming multi-object spectrographs., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 11 pages, 8 figures, 5 tables. We present the first discoveries from a survey of $z\gtrsim6$ quasars using imaging data from the DECam Legacy Survey (DECaLS) in the optical, the UKIRT Deep Infrared Sky Survey (UKIDSS) and a preliminary version of the UKIRT Hemisphere Survey (UHS) in the near-IR, and ALLWISE in the mid-IR. DECaLS will image 9000 deg$^2$ of sky down to $z_{\rm AB}\sim23.0$, and UKIDSS and UHS, which will map the northern sky at $06.5$ to $J_{\rm VEGA}<19.5$., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

We present new results on the auto- and cross-correlation functions of galaxies and OVI absorbers in a $\sim 18~\textrm{Gpc}^3$ comoving volume at $z < 1$. We use a sample of 51,296 galaxies and 140 OVI absorbers in the column density range $13 \lesssim \log N \lesssim 15$ to measure two-point correlation functions in the two dimensions transverse and orthogonal to the line-of-sight $\xi(r_{\perp}, r_{\parallel})$. We furthermore infer the corresponding 'real-space' correlation functions, $\xi(r)$, by projecting $\xi(r_{\perp}, r_{\parallel})$ along $r_{\parallel}$, and assuming a power-law form, $\xi(r) = (r / r_0)^{-\gamma}$. Comparing the results from the absorber-galaxy cross-correlation function, $\xi_{\textrm{ag}}$, the galaxy auto-correlation function, $\xi_{\textrm{gg}}$, and the absorber auto-correlation function, $\xi_{\textrm{aa}}$, we constrain the statistical connection between galaxies and the metal-enriched intergalactic medium as a function of star-formation activity. We also compare these results to predictions from the EAGLE cosmological hydrodynamical simulation and find a reasonable agreement. We find that: (i) OVI absorbers show very little velocity dispersion with respect to galaxies on $\sim$ Mpc scales, likely $\lesssim$ 100 \kms; (ii) OVI absorbers and galaxies may not linearly trace the same underlying distribution of matter in general. In particular, our results demonstrate that OVI absorbers are less clustered, and potentially more extended around galaxies than galaxies are around themselves; (iii) On $\gtrsim 100$ kpc scales, the likelihood of finding OVI absorbers around star-forming galaxies is similar to the likelihood of finding OVI absorbers around non star-forming galaxies (abridged), Comment: Revised submission to MNRAS, having addressed the referee's comments. 27 pages, 19 figures, 5 tables

We present the selection algorithm and anticipated results for the Time Domain Spectroscopic Survey (TDSS). TDSS is an SDSS-IV eBOSS subproject that will provide initial identification spectra of approximately 220,000 luminosity-variable objects (variable stars and AGN) across 7,500 square degrees selected from a combination of SDSS and multi-epoch Pan-STARRS1 photometry. TDSS will be the largest spectroscopic survey to explicitly target variable objects, avoiding pre-selection on the basis of colors or detailed modeling of specific variability characteristics. Kernel Density Estimate (KDE) analysis of our target population performed on SDSS Stripe 82 data suggests our target sample will be 95% pure (meaning 95% of objects we select have genuine luminosity variability of a few magnitudes or more). Our final spectroscopic sample will contain roughly 135,000 quasars and 85,000 stellar variables, approximately 4,000 of which will be RR Lyrae stars which may be used as outer Milky Way probes. The variability-selected quasar population has a smoother redshift distribution than a color-selected sample, and variability measurements similar to those we develop here may be used to make more uniform quasar samples in large surveys. The stellar variable targets are distributed fairly uniformly across color space, indicating that TDSS will obtain spectra for a wide variety of stellar variables including pulsating variables, stars with significant chromospheric activity, cataclysmic variables and eclipsing binaries. TDSS will serve as a pathfinder mission to identify and characterize the multitude of variable objects that will be detected photometrically in even larger variability surveys such as LSST., Comment: 22 pages, 18 figures, accepted by ApJ

We report the serendipitous detection of a 0.2 L$^*$, Lyman-$\alpha$ emitting galaxy at redshift 2.5 at an impact parameter of 50 kpc from a bright background QSO sightline. A high-resolution spectrum of the QSO reveals a partial Lyman-limit absorption system ($N_\mathrm{HI}=10^{16.94\pm0.10}$ cm$^{-2}$) with many associated metal absorption lines at the same redshift as the foreground galaxy. Using photoionization models that carefully treat measurement errors and marginalise over uncertainties in the shape and normalisation of the ionizing radiation spectrum, we derive the total hydrogen column density $N_\mathrm{H}=10^{19.4\pm0.3}$ cm$^{-2}$, and show that all the absorbing clouds are metal enriched, with $Z=0.1$-$0.6 Z_\odot$. These metallicities and the system's large velocity width ($436$ km$\,$s$^{-1}$) suggest the gas is produced by an outflowing wind. Using an expanding shell model we estimate a mass outflow rate of $\sim5 M_\odot\,$yr$^{-1}$. Our photoionization model yields extremely small sizes ($<$100-500 pc) for the absorbing clouds, which we argue are typical of high column density absorbers in the circumgalactic medium (CGM). Given these small sizes and extreme kinematics, it is unclear how the clumps survive in the CGM without being destroyed by hydrodynamic instabilities. The small cloud sizes imply that even state-of-the-art cosmological simulations require more than a $1000$-fold improvement in mass resolution to resolve the hydrodynamics relevant for cool gas in the CGM., Comment: Fixed an incorrect reference to D'Odorico & Petitjean 2001, A&A, 370, 729. We analyse the clustering of 22,361 quasars between redshift 2.2 < z < 2.9 observed with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS)-III Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS), which are included in the ninth data release (DR9). We fit the clustering results with a {\Lambda}CDM model to calculate the linear bias of the quasar sample, b=3.74\pm 0.12. The measured value of bias is consistent with the findings of White et al. (2012), where they analyse almost the same quasar sample, although only in the range, s<40 Mpc/h. At large scales we observe an excess or plateau in the clustering correlation function. By fitting a model that incorporates a scale dependent additional term in the bias introduced by primordial non-Gaussianity of the local type, we calculate the amplitude of the deviation from the Gaussian initial conditions as 70

We present a clustering analysis of Luminous Red Galaxies in SDSS Stripe 82. We study the angular 2-point correlation function, of 130,000 LRG candidates via colour-cut selections in izK with the K band coverage coming from UKIDSS LAS. We have used the cross-correlation technique of Newman (2008) to establish the LRG redshift distribution. Cross-correlating with SDSS QSOs, MegaZ-LRGs and DEEP2 galaxies implies an average LRG redshift of z~1 with space density, n_g~3.2 +/-0.16 x10^-4 h^3 Mpc^-3. For theta<10', w(theta) significantly deviates from a single power-law. A double power-law with a break at r_b~2.4 h^-1 Mpc fits the data better, with best-fit scale length, r_0,1=7.63+/-0.27 h^-1Mpc and slope gamma_1=2.01 +/-0.02 at small scales and r_0,2=9.92 +/-0.40 h^-1 Mpc and gamma_2=1.64 +/-0.04 at large scales. Due to the flat slope at large scales, we find that a standard LambdaCDM linear model is accepted only at 2-3sigma, with the best-fit bias factor, b=2.74+/-0.07. We also fitted HOD models and estimate an effective halo mass of M_eff=3.3 +/-0.6x10^13 h^-1 M_sun. But at large scales, the current HOD models did not help explain the power excess in the clustering signal. We then compare the w(theta) results to those of Sawangwit et al. (2011) from 3 samples of LRGs at lower redshifts to measure clustering evolution. We find that a long-lived model may be a poorer fit than at lower redshifts, although this assumes that the Stripe 82 LRGs are luminosity-matched to the AAOmega LRGs. We find stronger evidence for evolution in the form of the z~1 LRG correlation function, with the above flat 2-halo slope maintaining to r>50 h^-1 Mpc. Applying the cross-correlation test of Ross et al. (2011), we find little evidence that the result is due to systematics. Simple pure luminosity evolution (PLE) models, in which galaxies brighten at high redshift due to increased star-formation rates (SFRs), are known to provide a good fit to the colours and number counts of galaxies throughout the optical and near-infrared. We show that optically defined PLE models, where dust reradiates absorbed optical light into infrared spectra composed of local galaxy templates, fit galaxy counts and colours out to 8um and to at least z=2.5. At 24-70um, the model is able to reproduce the observed source counts with reasonable success if 16% of spiral galaxies show an excess in mid-IR flux due to a warmer dust component and a higher SFR, in line with observations of local starburst galaxies. There remains an under-prediction of the number of faint-flux, high-z sources at 24um, so we explore how the evolution may be altered to correct this. At 160um and longer wavelengths, the model fails, with our model of normal galaxies accounting for only a few percent of sources in these bands. However, we show that a PLE model of obscured AGN, which we have previously shown to give a good fit to observations at 850um, also provides a reasonable fit to the Herschel/BLAST number counts and redshift distributions at 250-500um. In the context of a LCDM cosmology, an AGN contribution at 250-870um would remove the need to invoke a top-heavy IMF for high-redshift starburst galaxies, although the excellent fit of the galaxy PLE model at shorter wavelengths would still need to be explained., Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures; submitted to MNRAS

We find that X-ray sources in the Extended Chandra Deep Field South are strongly spatially correlated with LABOCA 870 micron sources. We investigate the dependence of this correlation on X-ray flux, hardness ratio and column density, finding that specifically faint and absorbed X-ray sources are significant sub-mm emitters. In the X-ray source redshift subsample we confirm the previous result that higher luminosity sources (L_X>10^44 ergs/s) have greater 870um fluxes but we also find that this subsample selects against absorbed sources, faint in X-ray flux. Overall, we find that X-ray sources contribute 1.5 \pm 0.1 Jy/deg^2 to the sub-mm background, ~3% of the total, in agreement with the prediction of an obscured AGN model which also gives a reasonable fit to the bright sub-mm source counts. This non-unified model also suggests that when Compton-thick, X-ray-undetected sources are included, then the fractional AGN contribution to the sub-mm background would rise from ~3% to a total of 25-40%, although in a unified model the AGN contribution would only reach ~13%, because the sub-mm flux of the X-ray sources is then more representative of the whole AGN population. Measurements of the dependence of sub-mm flux on X-ray flux, luminosity and column density all agree well with the predictions of the non-unified AGN model. Heavily absorbed, X-ray-undetected AGN could explain the further cross-correlation we find between sub-mm sources and z > 0.5 red galaxies. We first discuss the sensitivity of the WMAP CMB power spectrum to systematic errors by calculating the raw CMB power spectrum from WMAP data. We find that the power spectrum is surprisingly sensitive to the WMAP radiometer beam profile even at the position of the first acoustic peak on ~1 degree scales. Although the WMAP beam profile core is only 12.6arcmin FWHM at W, there is a long power-law tail to the beam due to side-lobes and this causes significant effects even at the first peak position. We then test the form of the beam-profile used by the WMAP team which is based on observations of Jupiter. We stacked radio source beam profiles as observed in each WMAP band and found that they showed a wider profile in Q, V, W than the Jupiter profile. We have now checked that this is not due to any Eddington or other bias in our sample by showing that the same results are obtained when radio sources are selected at 1.4GHz and that our methods retrieve the Jupiter beam when it is employed in simulations. We present the QSO luminosity function of the completed 2dF-SDSS LRG and QSO (2SLAQ) survey, based on QSOs photometrically selected from Sloan Digital Sky Survey imaging data and then observed spectroscopically using the 2dF instrument on the Anglo-Australian Telescope. We analyse 10637 QSOs in the redshift range 0.420.0, as found previously by Richards et al. (2005). The luminosity function is consistent with other previous, much smaller, samples produced to the depth of 2SLAQ. By combining the 2SLAQ and SDSS QSO samples we produce a QSO luminosity function with an unprecedented combination of precision and dynamic range. With this we are able to accurately constrain both the bright and faint ends of the QSO LF. While the overall trends seen in the evolution of the QSO LF appear similar to pure luminosity evolution, the data show very significant departures from such a model. Most notably we see clear evidence that the number density of faint QSOs peaks at lower redshift than bright QSOs: QSOs with Mg>-23 have space densities which peak at z<1, while QSOs at Mg<-26 peak at z>2. By fitting simple luminosity function models in narrow Mg intervals we find that this downsizing is significant at the 99.98 per cent level (abridged)., Comment: 20 pages, 18 figures. We describe the design and science case for a spectrograph for the prime focus of classical 4-m wide-field telescopes that can deliver at least 4000 MOS slits over a 1 degree field. This extreme multiplex capability means that 25000 galaxy redshifts can be measured in a single night, opening up the possibilities for large galaxy redshift surveys out to z~0.7 and beyond for the purpose of measuring the Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) scale and for many other science goals. The design features four cloned spectrographs and exploits the exclusive possibility of tiling the focal plane of wide-field 4-m telescopes with CCDs for multi-object spectroscopic purposes. In ~200 night projects, such spectrographs have the potential to make galaxy redshift surveys of ~6 million galaxies over a wide redshift range and thus may provide a low-cost alternative to other survey routes such as WFMOS and SKA. Two of these extreme multiplex spectrographs are currently being designed for the AAT (NG1dF) and Calar Alto (XMS) 4-m class telescopes. NG2dF, a larger version for the AAT 2 degree field, would have 12 clones and at least 12000 slits. The clones use a transparent design including a grism in which all optics are smaller than the clone square subfield so that the clones can be tightly packed with little gaps between the contiguous fields. Only low cost glasses are used; the variations in chromatic aberrations between bands are compensated by changing one or two of the lenses adjacent to the grism. We present an analysis of the small-to-intermediate scale clustering of samples of Luminous Red Galaxies (LRGs) from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and the 2dF-SDSS LRG and QSO (2SLAQ) survey carefully matched to have the same rest-frame colours and luminosity. We study the spatial two-point auto-correlation function in both redshift-space and real-space of a combined sample of over 10,000 LRGs, which represent the most massive galaxies in the universe with stellar masses > 10^11 h^-1 M_sun and space densities 10^-4 h^-3 Mpc^-3. We find no significant evolution in the amplitude r_0 of the correlation function with redshift, but do see a slight decrease in the slope with increasing redshift over 0.19 < z < 0.55 and scales of 0.32 < r < 32 h^-1 Mpc. We compare our measurements with the predicted evolution of dark matter clustering and use the halo model to interpret our results. We find that our clustering measurements are inconsistent (>99.9% significance) with a passive model whereby the LRGs do not merge with one another; a model with a merger rate of 7.5 +/- 2.3% from z = 0.55 to z = 0.19 (i.e. an average rate of 2.4% Gyr^-1) provides a better fit to our observations. Our clustering and number density measurements are consistent with the hypothesis that the merged LRGs were originally central galaxies in different haloes which, following the merger of these haloes, merged to create a single Brightest Cluster Galaxy. In addition, we show that the small-scale clustering signal constrains the scatter in halo merger histories. When combined with measurements of the luminosity function, our results suggest that this scatter is sub-Poisson. Prompted by indications from QSO lensing that there may be more mass associated with galaxy groups than expected, we have made new dynamical infall estimates of the masses associated with 2PIGG groups and clusters. We have analysed the redshift distortions in the cluster-galaxy cross-correlation function as a function of cluster membership, cross-correlating z<0.12 2PIGG clusters and groups with the full 2dF galaxy catalogue. We have made estimates of the dynamical infall parameter beta and new estimates of the group velocity dispersions. We first find that the amplitude of the full 3-D redshift space cross-correlation function, xi_{cg}, rises monotonically with group membership. We have combined optical data from the 2dF-SDSS Luminous Red Galaxy and QSO (2SLAQ) redshift survey with radio measurements from the 1.4 GHz VLA FIRST and NVSS surveys to identify a volume-limited sample of 391 radio galaxies at redshift 0.4

We present a detailed investigation into the recent star formation histories of 5,697 Luminous Red Galaxies (LRGs) based on the Hdelta (4101A) and [OII] (3727A) lines. LRGs are luminous (L>3L*), galaxies which have been selected to have photometric properties consistent with an old, passively evolving stellar population. For this study we utilise LRGs from the recently completed 2dF-SDSS LRG and QSO survey (2SLAQ). Equivalent widths of the Hdelta and [OII] lines are measured and used to define three spectral types, those with only strong Hdelta absorption (k+a), those with strong [OII] in emission (em) and those with both (em+a). All other LRGs are considered to have passive star formation histories. The vast majority of LRGs are found to be passive (~80 per cent), however significant numbers of k+a (2.7 per cent), em+a (1.2 per cent) and em LRGs (8.6 per cent) are identified. An investigation into the redshift dependence of the fractions is also performed. A sample of SDSS MAIN galaxies with colours and luminosities consistent with the 2SLAQ LRGs is selected to provide a low redshift comparison. While the em and em+a fractions are consistent with the low redshift SDSS sample, the fraction of k+a LRGs is found to increase significantly with redshift. This result is interpreted as an indication of an increasing amount of recent star formation activity in LRGs with redshift. By considering the expected life time of the k+a phase, the number of LRGs which will undergo a k+a phase can be estimated. A crude comparison of this estimate with the predictions from semi-analytic models of galaxy formation shows that the predicted level of k+a and em+a activity is not sufficient to reconcile the predicted mass growth for massive early-types in a hierarchical merging scenario., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 13 pages, 10 figures

We describe the construction of MegaZ-LRG, a photometric redshift catalogue of over one million luminous red galaxies (LRGs) in the redshift range 0.4 < z < 0.7 with limiting magnitude i < 20. The catalogue is selected from the imaging data of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 4. The 2dF-SDSS LRG and Quasar (2SLAQ) spectroscopic redshift catalogue of 13,000 intermediate-redshift LRGs provides a photometric redshift training set, allowing use of ANNz, a neural network-based photometric-redshift estimator. The rms photometric redshift accuracy obtained for an evaluation set selected from the 2SLAQ sample is sigma_z = 0.049 averaged over all galaxies, and sigma_z = 0.040 for a brighter subsample (i < 19.0). The catalogue is expected to contain ~5 per cent stellar contamination. The ANNz code is used to compute a refined star/galaxy probability based on a range of photometric parameters; this allows the contamination fraction to be reduced to 2 per cent with negligible loss of genuine galaxies. We simulated both the matter and light (galaxy) distributions in a wedge of the universe and calculated the gravitational lensing magnification caused by the mass along the line of sight of galaxies and galaxy groups identified in sky surveys. A large volume redshift cone containing cold dark matter particles mimics the expected cosmological matter distribution in a flat universe with low matter density and a cosmological constant. We generate a mock galaxy catalogue from the matter distribution and identify thousands of galaxy groups in the luminous sky projection. We calculate the expected magnification around galaxies and galaxy groups and then the induced QSO-lens angular correlation due to magnification bias. This correlation is an observable and can be used to estimate the average mass of the lens population and also make cosmological inferences. We also use analytic calculations and various analysis to compare the observational results with theoretical expectations for the cross-correlation between faint QSOs from the 2dF Survey and nearby galaxies and groups from the APM and SDSS EDR. The observed QSO-lens anti-correlations are stronger than the predictions for the cosmological model used. This suggests that there could be unknown systematic errors in the observations and data reduction, or that the model used is not adequate. If the observed signal is assumed to be solely due to gravitational lensing then the lensing is stronger than expected, due to more massive galactic structures or more efficient lensing than simulated., Comment: 11 pages. We discuss the construction of a photometric redshift catalogue of Luminous Red Galaxies (LRGs) from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), emphasizing the principal steps necessary for constructing such a catalogue -- (i) photometrically selecting the sample, (ii) measuring photometric redshifts and their error distributions, (iii) and estimating the true redshift distribution. We compare two photometric redshift algorithms for these data and find that they give comparable results. Calibrating against the SDSS and SDSS-2dF spectroscopic surveys, we find that the photometric redshift accuracy is $\sigma \sim 0.03$ for redshifts less than 0.55 and worsens at higher redshift ($\sim 0.06$). These errors are caused by photometric scatter, as well as systematic errors in the templates, filter curves, and photometric zeropoints. We also parametrize the photometric redshift error distribution with a sum of Gaussians, and use this model to deconvolve the errors from the measured photometric redshift distribution to estimate the true redshift distribution. We pay special attention to the stability of this deconvolution, regularizing the method with a prior on the smoothness of the true redshift distribution. We present results of a Gemini adaptive optics (AO) imaging program to investigate the host galaxies of typical QSOs at z~2. Our aim is to study the host galaxies of typical, L*_qso QSOs at the epoch of peak QSO and star formation activity. The large database of faint QSOs provided by the 2dF QSO Redshift Survey allows us to select a sample of QSOs at z=1.75-2.5 which have nearby (<12 arcsecond separation) bright stars suitable for use as AO guide stars. We have observed a sample of 9 QSOs. The images of these sources have AO corrected full-width at half-maximum of between 0.11 and 0.25 arcseconds. We use multiple observations of point spread function (PSF) calibration star pairs in order to quantify any uncertainty in the PSF. We then factored these uncertainties into our modelling of the QSO plus host galaxy. In only one case did we convincingly detect a host (2QZ J133311.4+001949, at z=1.93). This host galaxy has K=18.5+-0.2 mag with a half-light radius, r_e=0.55+-0.1'', equivalent to ~3L*_gal assuming a simple passively evolving model. From detailed simulations of our host galaxy modelling process, we find that for four of our targets we should be sensitive to host galaxies that are equivalent to ~2L*_gal (passively evolved). Our non-detections therefore place tight constraints on the properties of L*_qso QSO host galaxies, which can be no brighter (after allowing for passive evolution) than the host galaxies of L*_qso AGN at low redshift, although the QSOs themselves are a factor of ~50 brighter. This implies that either the fueling efficiency is much greater at high redshift, or that more massive black holes are active at high redshift., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, using emulateapj.cls. We review the current status of QSO clustering measurements, particular with respect to their relevance in understanding AGN physics. Measurements based on the 2dF QSO Redshift Survey (2QZ) find a scale length for QSO clustering of s_0=5.76(+0.17-0.27) h-1 Mpc at a redshift ~1.5, very similar to low redshift galaxies. There is no evidence of evolution in the clustering of QSOs from z~0.5 to z~2.2. This lack of evolution and low clustering amplitude suggests a short life time for AGN activity of the order ~10^6-10^7 years. Large surveys such at the 2QZ and SDSS also allow the the study of QSO environments in 3D for the first time (at least at low redshift), early results from this work seem to show no difference between the environments of QSOs and normal galaxies. Future studies e.g. measuring clustering as a function of black hole mass, and deep QSO surveys should provide further insight into the formation and evolution of AGN., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures. We present new Hubble Space Telescope (HST) WFPC2 images of the post-starburst quasar UN J1025-0040, which contains both an active galactic nucleus (AGN) and a 400-Myr-old nuclear starburst of similar bolometric luminosity (10^{11.6} solar luminosities). The F450W and F814W images resolve the AGN from the starburst and show that the bulk of the star light (6 x 10^{10} solar masses) is contained within a central radius of about 600 parsecs, and lacks clear morphological structures at this scale. Equating the point-source light in each image with the AGN contribution, we determined the ratio of AGN-to-starburst light. This ratio is 69% in the red F814W image, consistent with our previous spectral analysis, but about 50% in the blue F450W image whereas we had predicted 76%. The HST images are consistent with previous photometry, ruling out variability (a fading AGN) as a cause for this result. We can explain the new data if there is a previously unknown young stellar population present, 40 Myr or younger, with as much as 10% of the mass of the dominant 400-Myr-old population. This younger starburst may represent the trigger for the current nuclear activity. Using published HST Cepheid data from 25 galaxies, we have found a correlation between the P-L dispersion and host galaxy metallicity which is significant at the ~3sigma level in the V band. This result supports the suggestion that the metallicity dependence of the Cepheid P-L relation may be stronger than expected. The high observed dispersions in the HST Cepheid P-L relations have the further consequence that the bias due to incompleteness in the P-L relation at faint magnitudes is more significant than previously thought. In the HST sample, galaxies at higher distance tend to have higher metallicity. This means that when a full metallicity/incompleteness correction is made, a scale error in the published Cepheid distances is seen in the sense that the published distance moduli are increasingly underestimates at larger distances. This results in the average distance modulus to the four galaxies in the Virgo cluster core increasing from (m-M)_0=31.2+-0.19 to (m-M)_0=31.8+-0.17 with similar increases for the Fornax and Ursa Major clusters. For the 18 HST galaxies with good Tully-Fisher distances and (m-M)_0>29.5 the Cepheid-TF distance modulus average residual increases from 0.44+-0.09 mag to 0.82+-0.1mag indicating a significant scale error in TF distances and resulting in the previous Pierce & Tully TF estimate of H_0=85 reducing to H_0=58+-7. Finally, for the 8 HST galaxies with SNIa, the metallicity corrected Cepheid distances now imply a metallicity dependence of SNIa peak luminosity in the sense that metal-poor hosts have lower luminosity SNIa. Observations in the submillimetre waveband have recently revealed a new population of luminous, sub-mm sources. These are proposed to lie at high redshift and to be optically faint due to their high intrinsic dust obscuration. The presence of dust has been previously invoked in optical galaxy count models which assume $\tau=9$ Gyr Bruzual & Charlot evolution for spirals and these fit the count data well from U to K. We now show that by using either a 1/$\lambda$ or Calzetti absorption law for the dust and re-distributing the evolved spiral galaxy UV radiation into the far infra-red(FIR), these models can account for all of the `faint'($\leq1$mJy) $850\mu$m galaxy counts, but fail to fit 'bright'($\ge2$mJy) sources, indicating that another explanation for the sub-mm counts may apply at brighter fluxes(e.g. QSOs, ULIRGs). We find that the main contribution to the faint, sub-mm number counts is in the redshift range $0.5 < z < 3$, peaking at $z\approx 1.8$. The above model, using either dust law, can also explain a significant proportion of the extra-galactic background at $850\mu$m as well as producing a reasonable fit to the bright $60\mu m$ IRAS counts., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures. Optical spectroscopy has enabled us to identify the optical counterparts to over 200 faint X-ray sources to a flux limit of S_(0.5-2keV)=4x10^-15 erg s^-1 cm^-2 on 5 deep ROSAT fields. Here we present a spectral analysis of all the X-ray sources to investigate claims that the average source spectra harden at faint X-ray flux. From a hardness ratio analysis we confirm that the average spectra from 0.5-2 keV harden from an equivalent photon index of $\Gamma=2.2$ at S_(0.5-2keV)=1x10^-13 erg s^-1 cm^-2 to $\Gamma=1.7$ below 1x10^-14 erg s^-1 cm^-2. These spectral changes are due to the emergence of an unidentified source population rather than the class of X-ray QSOs already identified. The 128 QSOs detected so far show no evidence for spectral hardening over this energy range and retain a mean photon index of $\Gamma=2.2$. Recent work suggests that many of the remaining unidentified sources are X-ray luminous galaxies. Taking a subset identified as the most likely galaxy candidates we find that these show significantly harder spectra than QSOs. The emission line galaxies in particular show spectra more consistent with the residual X-ray background, with $\Gamma=1.51 \pm 0.1$ from 0.1-2 keV. Individually the galaxies appear to be a mixture of absorbed and unabsorbed X-ray sources. Combined with recent cross-correlation results and work on the source number count distribution, these results suggest that we may be uncovering the missing hard component of the cosmic X-ray background., Comment: MNRAS Accepted. X-ray luminous narrow emision-line galaxies (NELG) have been previously identified and proposed as an important class of extragalactic X-ray sources, with a potentially significant contribution to the total extragalactic X-ray flux at energies below $\sim$ 10 keV. In order to investigate and clarify this possibility, we have used a sample of NELG found in 5 deep ROSAT fields and similar samples belonging to the Cambridge-Cambridge ROSAT Serendipity Survey and to the {\it Einstein} Observatory Extended Medium Sensitivity Survey sample. The principal results of this investigation are as follows: a) for a given optical luminosity, the typical X-ray luminosity of NELGs is about one or two orders of magnitude higher than that of normal galaxies; b) the ratio of the surface density of NELGs compared with BLAGN increases from about 0.04 at fx >= 6 x 10^{-13} erg cm^{-2} s^{-1} to about 0.1 at fx >= 10^{-14} erg cm^{-2} s^{-1}, suggesting that the surface density of NL galaxies might be very close to that of BLAGN at fx ~ 10^{-15} erg cm^{-2} s^{-1}; c) we find that these objects are described by a cosmological evolution rate similar to that of soft X-ray selected BLAGN; d) the de-evolved (z=0) XLF of NELGs in the luminosity range 10^{41} - 5 x 10^{43} erg s^{-1} is steeper than the BLAGN (z=0) XLF in the same luminosity interval. Their spatial density is significantly lower than the spatial density of X-ray selected BLAGN at Lx(z=0) ~ 5 x 10^{43} erg s^{-1}, but this difference decreases at lower luminosities such that at Lx(z=0) < 10^{42} erg s^{-1} the spatial density of NELGs is very close to that of BLAGN. In this paper we analyse the deep number counts problem, taking account of new observational and theoretical developments. First we show that the new Bruzual and Charlot (1993) models allow a new class of spiral dominated luminosity evolution (LE) model where significant amounts of the luminosity evolution needed to fit faint count data are due to spiral rather than early-type galaxies. Second we show that the inclusion of dust may be a vital ingredient for obtaining fits with any LE model. Third we compare the quality of fit of both the spiral and early-type LE models, including dust, for a wide variety of observational data. We find that parameters can be found for both LE models which allow a good fit to all data with the exception of the faintest B>25 counts in the case of q0=0.5 cosmologies, where some luminosity dependent evolution may be needed (see also Metcalfe et al 1995). Otherwise both these classes of LE model, with the inclusion of dust, provide an excellent foundation for understanding the B<25 galaxy counts and galaxy counts and redshift distributions in a variety of other wavebands., Comment: 11 pages, uuencoded compressed postscript file uncluding text and figures.
