Abstract Background Literature suggests colonic resection and primary anastomosis (RPA) instead of Hartmann’s procedure (HP) for the treatment of left-sided colonic emergencies. We aim to evaluate the surgical options globally used to treat patients with acute left-sided colonic emergencies and the factors that leading to the choice of treatment, comparing HP and RPA. Methods This is a prospective, international, multicenter, observational study registered on ClinicalTrials.gov. A total 1215 patients with left-sided colonic emergencies who required surgery were included from 204 centers during the period of March 1, 2020, to May 31, 2020. with a 1-year follow-up. Results 564 patients (43.1%) were females. The mean age was 65.9 ± 15.6 years. HP was performed in 697 (57.3%) patients and RPA in 384 (31.6%) cases. Complicated acute diverticulitis was the most common cause of left-sided colonic emergencies (40.2%), followed by colorectal malignancy (36.6%). The objective of this study is to evaluate how various fillers, specifically stainless steel flakes and magnetite powder, affect the visual attributes, durability and versatility of a water-based wood paint. To examine the influence of these two specific pigments on the overall look of the coatings, colorimetric measurements were carried out. The impact of these distinct fillers on the durability of the layers was assessed by subjecting the samples to xenon arc light exposure and cyclic thermal shocks, followed by colorimetric inspections and adhesion tests. Furthermore, the fillers' impact on the coating's ability to act as a barrier was assessed through liquid resistance and water uptake tests. Additionally, the Buchholz hardness indentation test and the Taber test were conducted to quantify how these functional additives affect the mechanical properties of the coatings, such as hardness and resistance to abrasion. Lastly, two specific tests revealed the fillers' role in introducing unique electrical conductivity and magnetic attractive properties to the paint. In conclusion, this study underscores the intriguing influence of stainless steel flakes and magnetite powder, which not only impart vibrant colors and distinct visual characteristics to the paint but also maintain the coating's protective barrier properties, enhance the mechanical properties of the composite layer, and introduce specific multifunctional features to the coating.

Abstract The heart coordinates its functional parameters for optimal beat-to-beat mechanical activity. Reliable detection and quantification of these parameters still represent a hot topic in cardiovascular research. Nowadays, computer vision allows the development of open-source algorithms to measure cellular kinematics. However, the analysis software can vary based on analyzed specimens. In this study, we compared different software performances in in-silico model, in-vitro mouse adult ventricular cardiomyocytes and cardioids. We acquired in-vitro high-resolution videos during suprathreshold stimulation at 0.5-1-2 Hz, adapting the protocol for the cardioids. Moreover, we exposed the samples to inotropic and depolarizing substances. We analyzed in-silico and in-vitro videos by (i) MUSCLEMOTION, the gold standard among open-source software; (ii) CONTRACTIONWAVE, a recently developed tracking software; and (iii) ViKiE, an in-house customized video kinematic evaluation software. We enriched the study with three machine-learning algorithms to test the robustness of the motion-tracking approaches. Our results revealed that all software produced comparable estimations of cardiac mechanical parameters. For instance, in cardioids, beat duration measurements at 0.5 Hz were 1053.58 ms (MUSCLEMOTION), 1043.59 ms (CONTRACTIONWAVE), and 937.11 ms (ViKiE). ViKiE exhibited higher sensitivity in exposed samples due to its localized kinematic analysis, while MUSCLEMOTION and CONTRACTIONWAVE offered temporal correlation, combining global assessment with time-efficient analysis. Finally, machine learning reveals greater accuracy when trained with MUSCLEMOTION dataset in comparison with the other software (accuracy > 83%). In conclusion, our findings provide valuable insights for the accurate selection and integration of software tools into the kinematic analysis pipeline, tailored to the experimental protocol.

Shells are primarily composed of calcite and aragonite, making the inclusion of micronized shells as bio-based fillers in organic coatings a potential means to enhance the mechanical properties of the layers. A water-based coating was reinforced with 5 wt.% Acanthocardia tuberculata powder, 5 wt.% Mytilus galloprovincialis powder, and 5 wt.% of an LDPE/ceramic/nanoceramic composite. An improvement in abrasion resistance was achieved using micronized seashells, as demonstrated by the Taber test (evaluating both weight loss and thickness reduction). Additionally, Buchholz hardness improved with powders derived from Mytilus galloprovincialis. No significant differences were observed among the samples in terms of color and gloss after 200 h of UV-B exposure. However, the delamination length from the scratch after 168 h of exposure in a salt spray chamber indicated that the addition of particles to the polymeric matrix resulted in premature degradation, likely due to the formation of preferential paths for water penetration from the scratch. This hypothesis was supported by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements, which revealed a decrease in total impedance at 0.01 Hz shortly after immersion in a 3.5% NaCl solution. In conclusion, the particle size and shape of the micronized shells improved abrasion resistance without altering color and gloss but led to a decrease in the coating’s isolation properties.

This study aims to assess the functionality of a bio-derived additive, comprising rice bran wax infused with green tea, as an environmentally sustainable and adaptable pigment for wood coatings. Additionally, the effectiveness of the bio-based additive, in conjunction with a specialized UV absorber to enhance color consistency under harsh conditions, was examined. Aesthetic impact was analyzed through evaluations of color, gloss, and surface roughness. Moreover, the stability of the wax-based powder in aggressive environments was characterized by subjecting samples to UV-B and climatic chamber exposure. The barrier properties of the additive were investigated using a water uptake test and contact angle measurements, while liquid resistance tests were conducted to gauge its efficacy. Lastly, the protective role of the bio-based additive was analyzed through scrub tests and surface analysis using scanning electron microscopy. Findings underscored the versatility of the green additive as a multifunctional pigment, offering not only color enhancement but also robust protective capabilities. Its unique combination of color, mattifying effect, barrier enhancement, and protective function position it as an attractive bio-based additive for wood coatings with functional applications.

Psoriasis is an autoimmune cutaneous condition that significantly impacts quality of life and represents a burden on society due to its prevalence. Genome-wide association studies (GWASs) have pinpointed several psoriasis-related risk loci, underlining the disease’s complexity. Functional genomics is paramount to unveiling the role of such loci in psoriasis and disentangling its complex nature. In this review, we aim to elucidate the main findings in this field and integrate our discussion with gold-standard techniques in molecular biology—i.e., Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats (CRISPR)—and high-throughput technologies. These tools are vital to understanding how disease risk loci affect gene expression in psoriasis, which is crucial in identifying new targets for personalized treatments in advanced precision medicine.

Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) refer to a group of conditions that affect the temporomandibular joint, causing pain and dysfunction in the jaw joint and related muscles. The diagnosis of TMDs typically involves clinical assessment through operator-based physical examination, a self-reported questionnaire and imaging studies. To objectivize the measurement of TMD, this study aims at investigating the feasibility of using machine-learning algorithms fed with data gathered from low-cost and portable instruments to identify the presence of TMD in adult subjects. Through this aim, the experimental protocol involved fifty participants, equally distributed between TMD and healthy subjects, acting as a control group. The diagnosis of TMD was performed by a skilled operator through the typical clinical scale. Participants underwent a baropodometric analysis by using a pressure matrix and the evaluation of the cervical mobility through inertial sensors. Nine machine-learning algorithms belonging to support vector machine, k-nearest neighbours and decision tree algorithms were compared. The k-nearest neighbours algorithm based on cosine distance was found to be the best performing, achieving performances of 0.94, 0.94 and 0.08 for the accuracy, F1-score and G-index, respectively. These findings open the possibility of using such methodology to support the diagnosis of TMDs in clinical environments.

The study investigated the effect of sebacate as a corrosion inhibitor for acrylic-coated steel. Specifically, it examined its impact on mitigating a frequent case of paint delamination, known as filiform corrosion (FFC), through a chosen weathering test designed to stress the degradation of the produced samples. Sebacate was demonstrated to be an efficient organic molecule for enhancing the corrosion resistance of steel. This efficacy was evaluated through electrochemical characterization based on electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements and potentiodynamic polarization curves, including the application of an FFC susceptibility prediction methodology based on measurements obtained in FFC-simulated electrolytes. An inhibition efficiency of 98% was measured in near-neutral saline solutions compared to conditions lacking inhibitor presence. During FFC simulation, the primary effect observed was associated with a reduction in cathodic activity evolution. Furthermore, a significant reduction in corrosion creep evolution of 35% was found. These experimental findings aligned closely with the outcomes projected by the simulated investigations.

AISI 304L stainless steel is widely used in the processing equipment and food and beverage handling industries due to its corrosion resistance, hygienic properties, and cost-effectiveness. However, it is prone to pitting and crevice corrosion phenomena, the development of which can be influenced by factors such as chloride concentration, temperature, humidity, and bacterial presence. Surface treatments, including roughness levels and residual tensile stress, can significantly affect the corrosion behavior and resistance of the material. This study aims to evaluate the impact of three different surface treatments on the durability of AISI 304L steel. The correlation between surface roughness resulting from pre-treatment and pitting potential values will be examined. Additionally, the influence of different concentrations of biocide additives on surface durability will be assessed to determine the maximum effective concentration for preventing pitting phenomena. Passivation processes will also be evaluated as a potential solution for improving the pitting potential and overall durability of the components. By optimizing surface treatments and biocide concentrations, improved corrosion resistance and durability can be achieved, ensuring the long-term performance and reliability of AISI 304L steel components in critical applications such as food processing and beverage handling.

The objective of this study is to evaluate how two varying amounts of sepiolite-based powder, infused with indigo extract, affect the appearance and durability of a water-based, white primer. To examine the influence of this eco-friendly pigment on the coatings’ overall appearance, assessments were performed for color, gloss, and surface roughness. Additionally, the coatings were investigated through optical and electron microscopic observations, to evaluate the distribution of the pigment within the polymer matrix. The effect of the pigment on the coating’s durability was assessed through accelerated tests, including exposure in a salt spray chamber and a UV-B chamber. These tests aimed to evaluate the emergence of defects and changes in the appearance of the samples over time. Furthermore, the impact of different quantities of sepiolite-based powder on the coating’s ability to act as a barrier was assessed using liquid resistance tests and contact angle measurements. These evaluations aimed to understand how the coating responded to various liquids and its surface properties concerning repellency or absorption. In essence, this study underscores the considerable influence of the eco-friendly pigment, demonstrating its capacity to introduce unique color and texture variations in the paint. Moreover, the inclusion of the pigment has enhanced the coating’s color stability, its ability to act as a barrier, and its overall durability when exposed to harsh environments.

This review emphasizes the recent ongoing shift in the wood coating industry towards bio-based resources and circular economy principles, promoting eco-friendly alternatives. In addressing wood’s vulnerabilities, this study investigates the use of natural compounds and biopolymers to enhance wood coatings. These materials contribute to protective matrices that safeguard wood surfaces against diverse challenges. Essential oils, vegetable oils, and bio-based polymers are explored for their potential in crafting eco-friendly and durable coating matrices. Furthermore, this review covers efforts to counter weathering and biological decay through the application of various natural compounds and extracts. It evaluates the effectiveness of different bio-based alternatives to traditional chemical preservatives and highlights promising candidates. This review also delves into the incorporation of sustainable pigments and dyes into wood coatings to enhance both protective and aesthetic qualities. Innovative pigments are able to provide visually appealing solutions in line with sustainability principles. As the wood coating industry embraces bio-based resources and the circular economy, researchers are actively developing protective solutions that encompass the coating matrix, preservatives, bio-based fillers, and natural-pigment dyes. This review showcases the continuous efforts of academia and industry to enhance wood coatings’ effectiveness, durability, and sustainability, while maintaining their aesthetic appeal.

Abstract Background The incidence of the highly morbid and potentially lethal gangrenous cholecystitis was reportedly increased during the COVID-19 pandemic. The aim of the ChoCO-W study was to compare the clinical findings and outcomes of acute cholecystitis in patients who had COVID-19 disease with those who did not. Methods Data were prospectively collected over 6 months (October 1, 2020, to April 30, 2021) with 1-month follow-up. In October 2020, Delta variant of SARS CoV-2 was isolated for the first time. Demographic and clinical data were analyzed and reported according to the STROBE guidelines. Baseline characteristics and clinical outcomes of patients who had COVID-19 were compared with those who did not. Results A total of 2893 patients, from 42 countries, 218 centers, involved, with a median age of 61.3 (SD: 17.39) years were prospectively enrolled in this study; 1481 (51%) patients were males. Abstract Plant vasculature transports molecules that play a crucial role in plant signaling including systemic responses and acclimation to diverse environmental conditions. Targeted controlled delivery of molecules to the vascular tissue can be a biomimetic way to induce long distance responses, providing a new tool for the fundamental studies and engineering of stress‐tolerant plants. Here, a flexible organic electronic ion pump, an electrophoretic delivery device, for controlled delivery of phytohormones directly in plant vascular tissue is developed. The c‐OEIP is based on polyimide‐coated glass capillaries that significantly enhance the mechanical robustness of these microscale devices while being minimally disruptive for the plant. The polyelectrolyte channel is based on low‐cost and commercially available precursors that can be photocured with blue light, establishing much cheaper and safer system than the state‐of‐the‐art. To trigger OEIP‐induced plant response, the phytohormone abscisic acid (ABA) in the petiole of intact Arabidopsis plants is delivered. ABA is one of the main phytohormones involved in plant stress responses and induces stomata closure under drought conditions to reduce water loss and prevent wilting. The OEIP‐mediated ABA delivery triggered fast and long‐lasting stomata closure far away from the delivery point demonstrating systemic vascular transport of the delivered ABA, verified delivering deuterium‐labeled ABA.

This work aims to highlight the multiple features shown by curcuma-based pigment and rice bran wax, which can be selectively employed as bio-based additives for the realization of multilayer wood coatings with multiple functionalities, harnessing the capabilities of the two environmentally friendly fillers, in line with current environmental sustainability trends. The role of the two green materials on the morphology of the composite layers was examined through observations employing scanning electron and optical microscopy, revealing a strong alteration of the film’s appearance, both its color and reflectivity. Additionally, their influence on the paint’s resilience was assessed by exposing the samples to UV-B radiation and consecutive thermal shocks. The coating displayed a clear and uniform change in color because of substantial curcuma powder photo-degradation but it remained exceptionally stable when subjected to thermal stresses. Moreover, the protective properties of the coatings were evaluated by conducting liquid resistance tests and water uptake tests, while the hardness and the abrasion resistance of the coatings were assessed to evaluate the effect of the additives on the mechanical properties of the coatings. In conclusion, this study showcases the promising joint action of curcuma-based pigment and rice bran wax in multilayer coatings. This combination offers vibrant yellow tones and an appealing appearance to the paint, enhances the surface’s water-repellent properties, and improves the mechanical resistance of the coatings.

Abstract Background The objectives of the study were to investigate the organizational characteristics of acute care facilities worldwide in preventing and managing infections in surgery; assess participants’ perception regarding infection prevention and control (IPC) measures, antibiotic prescribing practices, and source control; describe awareness about the global burden of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and IPC measures; and determine the role of the Coronavirus Disease 2019 pandemic on said awareness. Methods A cross-sectional web-based survey was conducted contacting 1432 health care workers (HCWs) belonging to a mailing list provided by the Global Alliance for Infections in Surgery. The self-administered questionnaire was developed by a multidisciplinary team. The survey was open from May 22, 2021, and June 22, 2021. Three reminders were sent, after 7, 14, and 21 days. Results Three hundred four respondents from 72 countries returned a questionnaire, with an overall response rate of 21.2%. Respectively, 90.4% and 68.8% of participants stated their hospital had a multidisciplinary IPC team or a multidisciplinary antimicrobial stewardship team. Local protocols for antimicrobial therapy of surgical infections and protocols for surgical antibiotic prophylaxis were present in 76.6% and 90.8% of hospitals, respectively. In 23.4% and 24.0% of hospitals no surveillance systems for surgical site infections and no monitoring systems of used antimicrobials were implemented. Patient and family involvement in IPC management was considered to be slightly or not important in their hospital by the majority of respondents (65.1%). Awareness of the global burden of AMR among HCWs was considered very important or important by 54.6% of participants. The COVID-19 pandemic was considered by 80.3% of respondents as a very important or important factor in raising HCWs awareness of the IPC programs in their hospital. Based on the survey results, the authors developed 15 statements for several questions regarding the prevention and management of infections in surgery. The statements may be the starting point for designing future evidence-based recommendations. Conclusion Adequacy of prevention and management of infections in acute care facilities depends on HCWs behaviours and on the organizational characteristics of acute health care facilities to support best practices and promote behavioural change. Patient involvement in the implementation of IPC is still little considered. A debate on how operationalising a fundamental change to IPC, from being solely the HCWs responsibility to one that involves a collaborative relationship between HCWs and patients, should be opened.

Materials used for building façades should combine aesthetics with functionality and durability. Vitreous enamels are a class of inorganic coatings, with a glossy and brilliant aspect, as well as high chemical resistance and protective properties. This study aimed to investigate the potentiality of enamel coatings for use in the architectural field. Different accelerated tests were carried out on enamel steel panels to test their durability and resistance to natural aggressive conditions (corrosive atmosphere and basic pH conditions, UV radiation, and pollution) and to mechanical damages. Two colors were chosen, red and white, to determine the effect of the addition of diverse pigments. Paints were employed as reference coating protection systems, as they currently serve as the standard for building façade design. Compared to paints, the enamel panels presented better corrosion protection, with higher adhesion to the steel substrate and stable aesthetic properties during the conducted tests, both in terms of color and gloss. Nevertheless, the white coating exhibited superior color stability, likely attributable to the presence of Se- and Cd-based pigments in the red coating. These pigments are known to be more prone to degradation. Overall, this work showed that porcelain enamels display good functional and aesthetic qualities, which make them suitable for use in the cladding of buildings and as transport infrastructure elements.

In this study, we describe a Salmonella enterica serovar (S.) Rissen strain with a reduced susceptibility to meropenem, isolated from a urinary infection in an 89-year-old woman in 2018 during activity surveillance in Italy (Enter-Net Italia). The genomic characteristics, pathogenicity, and antimicrobial resistance mechanisms were investigated via a genomic approach. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing revealed a “susceptible, increased exposure” phenotype to meropenem in the S. Rissen strain (4_29_19). Whole-genome sequencing (WGS) was performed using both the NovaSeq 6000 S4 PE150 XP platform (Illumina, San Diego, CA, USA) and MinION (Oxford Nanopore). The S. Rissen 4_29_19 strain harboured two plasmids: a pKpQIL-like plasmid carrying the blaKPC-3 resistance gene in a Tn4401a transposon (pKPC_4_29_19), and a ColE-like plasmid (p4_4_29_19) without resistance genes, highly prevalent among Enterobacterales. Comparative analysis revealed that the pKPC_4_29_19 plasmid was highly related to the pKpQIL reference plasmid (GU595196), with 57% coverage and 99.96% identity, but lacking a region of about 30 kb, involving the FIIK2 replicon region and the entire transfer locus, causing the loss of its ability to conjugate. To our knowledge, this is the first time that a pKpQIL-like plasmid, carrying blaKPC-3, highly diffused in Klebsiella pneumoniae strains, has been identified in a Salmonella strain in our country. The acquisition of blaKPC genes by Salmonella spp. is extremely rare, and is reported only sporadically. In zoonotic bacteria isolated from humans, the presence of a carbapenem resistance gene carried by mobile genetic elements, usually described in healthcare-associated infection bacteria, represents an important concern for public health.

Hot-dip galvanized steel is widely used for the construction of underground structures, thanks to the presence of a zinc coating that is able to protect the carbon steel substrate through the formation of a corrosion products layer. Soil corrosion is a very complex process and hence it is difficult to predict the corrosion resistance of a specific component because many factors can directly influence the behavior of material immerged in soil. This work focused on the effect of chlorides and sulphates concentrations on the corrosion of hot-dip galvanized steel wires buried in soil. In particular, the wires were monitored by means of electrochemical techniques, as open circuit potential, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and potentiodynamic polarization. Moreover, at the end of the exposure, the samples were extracted and observed by optical and electron microscopy, to examine the corroded surface and the corrosion morphology. The analysis evidenced that the effect of chlorides and sulphates is very severe, producing a great degradation of the zinc coating. In particular, the synergistic effect performed by the combined action of these elements caused, in the most critical situation, the protection loss of the external layer, putting steel substrate in direct contact with soil, and therefore obtaining a substantial reduction in material corrosion resistance.

Due to subjectivity in refereeing, the results of race walking are often questioned. To overcome this limitation, artificial-intelligence-based technologies have demonstrated their potential. The paper aims at presenting WARNING, an inertial-based wearable sensor integrated with a support vector machine algorithm to automatically identify race-walking faults. Two WARNING sensors were used to gather the 3D linear acceleration related to the shanks of ten expert race-walkers. Participants were asked to perform a race circuit following three race-walking conditions: legal, illegal with loss-of-contact and illegal with knee-bent. Thirteen machine learning algorithms, belonging to the decision tree, support vector machine and k-nearest neighbor categories, were evaluated. An inter-athlete training procedure was applied. Algorithm performance was evaluated in terms of overall accuracy, F1 score and G-index, as well as by computing the prediction speed. The quadratic support vector was confirmed to be the best-performing classifier, achieving an accuracy above 90% with a prediction speed of 29,000 observations/s when considering data from both shanks. A significant reduction of the performance was assessed when considering only one lower limb side. The outcomes allow us to affirm the potential of WARNING to be used as a referee assistant in race-walking competitions and during training sessions.

The importance of physical activity has been widely demonstrated both in clinics and in sports. One of the new frontier training programs is high-intensity functional training (HIFT). The immediate effects of HIFT on the psychomotor and cognitive performance of well-trained people are still not clear. This paper aims to evaluate the immediate effects induced by HIFT on blood lactate levels, physical performance in terms of body stability and jump ability, and cognitive performance in terms of reaction time. Nineteen well-trained participants were enrolled in the experimental studies and asked to execute six repetitions of a circuit training. Data were gathered both in a pre-training session and after each one of the circuit repetitions. An immediate significant increase with respect to the baseline was observed during the first repetition, with a further increase after the third one. No effects on jump ability were found, whereas a deterioration in body stability was found. Positive immediate effects on cognitive performance in terms of accuracy and speed in task execution were assessed. The findings can be exploited by trainers during coaching to optimize the design of training programs.

The toxicity of nanoparticles absorbed through contact or inhalation is one of the major concerns for public health. It is mandatory to continually evaluate the toxicity of nanomaterials. In vitro nanotoxicological studies are conventionally limited by the two dimensions. Although 3D bioprinting has been recently adopted for three-dimensional culture in the context of drug release and tissue regeneration, little is known regarding its use for nanotoxicology investigation. Therefore, aiming to simulate the exposure of lung cells to nanoparticles, we developed organoid-based scaffolds for long-term studies in immortalized cell lines. We printed the viscous cell-laden material via a customized 3D bioprinter and subsequently exposed the scaffold to either 40 nm latex-fluorescent or 11–14 nm silver nanoparticles. The number of cells significantly increased on the 14th day in the 3D environment, from 5 × 105 to 1.27 × 106, showing a 91% lipid peroxidation reduction over time and minimal cell death observed throughout 21 days. Administered fluorescent nanoparticles can diffuse throughout the 3D-printed scaffolds while this was not the case for the unprinted ones. A significant increment in cell viability from 3D vs. 2D cultures exposed to silver nanoparticles has been demonstrated. This shows toxicology responses that recapitulate in vivo experiments, such as inhaled silver nanoparticles. The results open a new perspective in 3D protocols for nanotoxicology investigation supporting 3Rs.

Porcelain enamel is an inorganic-type coating, which is applied to metals or glass for both decorative and functional purposes. This coating is a silica-based solidified glass mass obtained by high-temperature firing (temperature can range between 450 and 1200 °C depending on the substrate). Porcelain enamel coatings differ from ceramic coatings mainly by their glass structure and dilatation coefficient, and from organic paints mainly by the inorganic nature of the matrix and the chemical bond that exists between the coating and the substrate.

We present a broad selection of results on endomorphisms and automorphisms of the Cuntz algebras On that have been obtained in the last decades. A wide variety of open problems is also included.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) can have long-term cardiovascular and metabolic effects. The identification of OSA-related impairments would provide diagnostic and prognostic value. Heart rate variability (HRV) as a measure of cardiac autonomic regulation is a promising candidate marker of OSA and OSA-related conditions. We took advantage of the Physionet Apnea-ECG database for two purposes. First, we performed time- and frequency-domain analysis of nocturnal HRV on each recording of this database to evaluate the cardiac autonomic regulation in patients with nighttime sleep breathing disorders. Second, we conducted a logistic regression analysis (backward stepwise) to identify the HRV indices able to predict the apnea–hypopnea index (AHI) categories (i.e., “Severe OSA”, AHI ≥ 30; “Moderate-Mild OSA”, 5 ≥ AHI < 30; and “Normal”, AHI < 5). Compared to the “Normal”, the “Severe OSA” group showed lower high-frequency power in normalized units (HFnu) and higher low-frequency power in normalized units (LFnu). The standard deviation of normal R–R intervals (SDNN) and the root mean square of successive R–R interval differences (RMSSD) were independently associated with sleep-disordered breathing. Our findings suggest altered cardiac autonomic regulation with a reduced parasympathetic component in OSA patients and suggest a role of nighttime HRV in the characterization and identification of sleep breathing disorders.

This study aims to assess the effect of hollow glass microspheres of different sizes derived from glass industry waste on the durability and thermal behavior of waterborne paint. The coatings were characterized by electron microscopy to investigate the distribution of the spheres and their influence on the layer morphology. The impact of the various glassy spheres on the mechanical feature of the coatings was assessed using the Buchholz hardness test and the Scrub abrasion test. The role of the spheres in altering the durability of the samples was analyzed by the salt spray exposure test and the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements. Finally, a specific accelerated degradation test was carried out to explore the evolution of the thermal behavior of the composite coatings. Ultimately, this work revealed the pros and cons of using hollow glass spheres as a multifunctional paint filler, highlighting the size of the spheres as a key parameter. For example, spheres with adequate size (25–44 µm), totally embedded in the polymeric matrix, are able to reduce the thermal conductivity of the coating avoiding local heat accumulation phenomena.

Frequently touched surfaces (FTS) that are contaminated with pathogens are one of the main sources of nosocomial infections, which commonly include hospital-acquired and healthcare-associated infections (HAIs). HAIs are considered the most common adverse event that has a significant burden on the public’s health worldwide currently. The persistence of pathogens on contaminated surfaces and the transmission of multi-drug resistant (MDR) pathogens by way of healthcare surfaces, which are frequently touched by healthcare workers, visitors, and patients increase the risk of acquiring infectious agents in hospital environments. Moreover, not only in hospitals but also in high-traffic public places, FTS play a major role in the spreading of pathogens. Consequently, attention has been devoted to developing novel and alternative methods to tackle this problem. This study planned to produce and characterize innovative functionalized enameled coated surfaces supplemented with 1% AgNO3 and 2% AgNO3. Thus, the antimicrobial properties of the enamels against relevant nosocomial pathogens including the Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus and the Gram-negative Escherichia coli and the yeast Candida albicans were assessed using the ISO:22196:2011 norm.

There is increasing evidence that including sex as a biological variable is of crucial importance to promote rigorous, repeatable and reproducible science. In spite of this, the body of literature that accounts for the sex of participants in human locomotion studies is small and often produces controversial results. Here, we investigated the modular organization of muscle activation patterns for human locomotion using the concept of muscle synergies with a double purpose: i) uncover possible sex-specific characteristics of motor control and ii) assess whether these are maintained in older age. We recorded electromyographic activities from 13 ipsilateral muscles of the lower limb in young and older adults of both sexes walking (young and old) and running (young) on a treadmill. The data set obtained from the 215 participants was elaborated through non-negative matrix factorization to extract the time-independent (i.e., motor modules) and time-dependent (i.e., motor primitives) coefficients of muscle synergies. We found sparse sex-specific modulations of motor control. Motor modules showed a different contribution of hip extensors, knee extensors and foot dorsiflexors in various synergies. Motor primitives were wider (i.e., lasted longer) in males in the propulsion synergy for walking (but only in young and not in older adults) and in the weight acceptance synergy for running. Moreover, the complexity of motor primitives was similar in younger adults of both sexes, but lower in older females as compared to older males. In essence, our results revealed the existence of small but defined sex-specific differences in the way humans control locomotion and that these are not entirely maintained in older age.

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture represents one of the most recurrent knee injuries in soccer players. To allow a safe return to sport after ACL reconstruction, standardised and reliable procedures/criteria are needed. In this context, wearable sensors are gaining momentum as they allow obtaining objective information during sport-specific and in-the-field tasks. This paper aims at proposing a sensor-based protocol for the assessment of knee stability and at quantifying its reliability. Seventeen soccer players performed a single leg squat and a cross over hop test. Each participant was equipped with two magnetic-inertial measurement units located on the tibia and foot. Parameters related to the knee stability were obtained from linear acceleration and angular velocity signals. The intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and minimum detectable change (MDC) were calculated to evaluate each parameter reliability. The ICC ranged from 0.29 to 0.84 according to the considered parameter. Specifically, angular velocity-based parameters proved to be more reliable than acceleration-based counterparts, particularly in the cross over hop test (average ICC values of 0.46 and 0.63 for acceleration- and angular velocity-based parameters, respectively). An exception was represented, in the single leg squat, by parameters extracted from the acceleration trajectory on the tibial transverse plane (0.60≤ICC≤0.76), which can be considered as promising candidates for ACL injury risk assessment. Overall, greater ICC values were found for the dominant limb, with respect to the non-dominant one (average ICC: 0.64 and 0.53, respectively). Interestingly, this between-limb difference in variability was not always mirrored by LSI results. MDC values provide useful information in the perspective of applying the proposed protocol on athletes with ACL reconstruction. Thus, The outcome of this study sets the basis for the definition of reliable and objective criteria for return to sport clearance after ACL injury.

The implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) in a smart society, in which the analysis of human habits is mandatory, requires automated data scheduling and analysis using smart applications, a smart infrastructure, smart systems, and a smart network. In this context, which is characterized by a large gap between training and operative processes, a dedicated method is required to manage and extract the massive amount of data and the related information mining. The method presented in this work aims to reduce this gap with near-zero-failure advanced diagnostics (AD) for smart management, which is exploitable in any context of Society 5.0, thus reducing the risk factors at all management levels and ensuring quality and sustainability. We have also developed innovative applications for a human-centered management system to support scheduling in the maintenance of operative processes, for reducing training costs, for improving production yield, and for creating a human–machine cyberspace for smart infrastructure design. The results obtained in 12 international companies demonstrate a possible global standardization of operative processes, leading to the design of a near-zero-failure intelligent system that is able to learn and upgrade itself. Our new method provides guidance for selecting the new generation of intelligent manufacturing and smart systems in order to optimize human–machine interactions, with the related smart maintenance and education.

Assessing the performance of exoskeletons in assisting human balance is important for their design process. This study proposes a novel testbed, the B.E.A.T (Balance Evaluation Automated Testbed) to address this aim. We applied the B.E.A.T to evaluate how the presence of a lower limb exoskeleton influenced human balance. The B.E.A.T. consists of a robotic platform, standardized protocols, and performance indicators. Fifteen healthy subjects were enrolled and subjected to repeatable step-type ground perturbations in different directions using the multi-axis robotic platform. Each participant performed three trials, both with and without the exoskeleton (EXO and No-EXO conditions). Nine performance indicators, divided into kinematic and body stability indicators, were computed. The reliability of performance indicators was assessed by computing the Inter Class Correlation (ICC). The indicators showed good (0.60 ≤ ICC < 0.75) to excellent (ICC ≥ 0.75) reliability. The comparison between the EXO and No-EXO conditions revealed a significant increase in the joint range of motion and the center of pressure displacement while wearing the exoskeleton. The main differences between the EXO and No-EXO conditions were found in the range of motion of the knee joints, with an increment up to 17° in the sagittal plane.

The first objective of this paper is to report the clinical and functional results of a cohort of patients who underwent total knee arthroplasty revision at mid–long-term follow-up. The second objective is to investigate possible differences in postoperative functional and clinical outcomes between preoperative-cause-of-revision groups. Methods: we collected data from 105 surgeries performed between January 2008 and December 2014. Eighty-five of these patients were divided into subpopulations according to the causes of revision in order to study differences regarding their outcome. All the patients underwent a standard follow-up protocol with clinical and radiological exams at 1, 3, 6, 12, 24, and 36 months and at last follow-up. During the last follow-up, patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) were used. We implemented the functional outcomes obtained with clinical data determined by the Oxford knee score (OKS), EQ-VAS, EQ-5D-5L, Knee Society Score (KKS), and range of motion (ROM). Statistically significant differences among the medians of the groups of OKS, EQ-VAS, EQ-5D-5L, KKS, and ROM (p < 0.05) were noticed. The Dunn’s test was used to perform post hoc comparisons, and it determined where the differences lie. Results: the median follow-up was 99 months (interquartile range (IQR) 80–115). The median age was 71.5 IQR 65.1–74.8)) with no relevant differences between the groups. More patients presented a preoperative diagnosis of aseptic loosening (29%), malpositioning (28%), and infection (24%), while a preoperative diagnosis of instability (11%) and periprosthetic fracture was observed in fewer cases. For OKS, the highest median value was in the periprosthetic fracture group (43.25, IQR 32.7–45.3) and the lowest median value was in the infection group (24.8, IQR 17.4–34.8). For EQ-VAS, the highest median value was in the periprosthetic fracture group (73.0, IQR 67.0–78.0) and the lowest median value was in the instability group (39.0, IQR 36.0–48.0). For EQ-5D-5L, the highest median value was in the aseptic loosening group (0.81, IQR 0.74-0.85) and the lowest median value was in the infection group (0.44, IQR 0.32–0.60). For KKS, the highest median value was in the aseptic loosening group (84.0, IQR 81.0–88.0) and the lowest median value was in the malpositioning group (56.5, IQR 49.4–66.0). For ROM, the highest median value was in the periprosthetic fracture group (105.0°, IQR 96.0–111.0°) and the lowest median value was in the infection group (88.5°, IQR 77.5–98.0°). Conclusion: Constrained condylar knee (CCK) prostheses can also be considered a good option to manage difficult cases of total knee arthroplasty revision, with satisfactory results being maintained over time; a preoperative diagnosis of infection is associated with a worse clinical and functional outcome.

Abstract Background Non-communicable diseases, intended as the results of a combination of inherited, environmental and biological factors, kill 40 million people each year, equivalent to roughly 70% of all premature deaths globally. The possibility that manufactured nanoparticles (NPs) may affect cardiac performance, has led to recognize NPs-exposure not only as a major Public Health concern, but also as an occupational hazard. In volunteers, NPs-exposure is problematic to quantify. We recently found that inhaled titanium dioxide NPs, one of the most produced engineered nanomaterials, acutely increased cardiac excitability and promoted arrhythmogenesis in normotensive rats by a direct interaction with cardiac cells. We hypothesized that such scenario can be exacerbated by latent cardiovascular disorders such as hypertension. Results We monitored cardiac electromechanical performance in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs) exposed to titanium dioxide NPs for 6 weeks using a combination of cardiac functional measurements associated with toxicological, immunological, physical and genetic assays. Longitudinal radio-telemetry ECG recordings and multiple-lead epicardial potential mapping revealed that atrial activation times significantly increased as well as proneness to arrhythmia. At the third week of nanoparticles administration, the lung and cardiac tissue encountered a maladaptive irreversible structural remodelling starting with increased pro-inflammatory cytokines levels and lipid peroxidation, resulting in upregulation of the main pro-fibrotic cardiac genes. At the end of the exposure, the majority of spontaneous arrhythmic events terminated, while cardiac hemodynamic deteriorated and a significant accumulation of fibrotic tissue occurred as compared to control untreated SHRs. Titanium dioxide nanoparticles were quantified in the heart tissue although without definite accumulation as revealed by particle-induced X-ray emission and ultrastructural analysis. Conclusions The co-morbidity of hypertension and inhaled nanoparticles induces irreversible hemodynamic impairment associated with cardiac structural damage potentially leading to heart failure. The time-dependence of exposure indicates a non-return point that needs to be taken into account in hypertensive subjects daily exposed to nanoparticles.

The intra-subject, the inter-operator, and the inter-laboratory variabilities are the main sources of uncertainties in gait analysis, and their effects have been partially described in the literature for adult populations. This study aimed to extend the repeatability and reproducibility analysis to a pediatric population, accounting for the effects induced by the intra-subject variations, the measurement setup, the marker set configuration, and the involved operators in placing markers and EMG electrodes. We evaluated kinematic, kinetic and EMG outputs collected from gait analyses performed on two healthy children in two laboratories, by two operators, and with two marker placement protocols. The two involved centers previously defined a common acquisition procedure based on their routine pipelines. The similarity of kinematic, kinetic, and EMG curves were evaluated by means of the coefficients of the Linear Fit Method, and the Mean Absolute Variability with and without the offset among curves. The inter-operator variability was found to be the main contribution to the overall reproducibility of kinematic and kinetic gait data. On the contrary, the main contribution to the variability of the EMG signals was the intra-subject repeatability that is due to the physiological stride to stride muscle activation variability.

We show that a natural notion of irreducibility implies connectedness in the Compact Quantum Group setting. We also investigate the converse implication and show it is related to Kaplansky's conjectures on group algebras.

Daily life activities often require humans to perform locomotion in challenging scenarios. In this context, this study aimed at investigating the effects induced by anterior-posterior (AP) and medio-lateral (ML) perturbations on walking. Through this aim, the experimental protocol involved 12 participants who performed three tasks on a treadmill consisting of one unperturbed and two perturbed walking tests. Inertial measurement units were used to gather lower limb kinematics. Parameters related to joint angles, as the range of motion (ROM) and its variability (CoV), as well as the inter-joint coordination in terms of continuous relative phase (CRP) were computed. The AP perturbation seemed to be more challenging causing differences with respect to normal walking in both the variability of the ROM and the CRP amplitude and variability. As ML, only the ankle showed different behavior in terms of joint angle and CRP variability. In both tasks, a shortening of the stance was found. The findings should be considered when implementing perturbed rehabilitative protocols for falling reduction.

In the last few decades, a number of technological developments have advanced the spread of wearable sensors for the assessment of human motion. These sensors have been also developed to assess athletes’ performance, providing useful guidelines for coaching, as well as for injury prevention. The data from these sensors provides key performance outcomes as well as more detailed kinematic, kinetic, and electromyographic data that provides insight into how the performance was obtained. From this perspective, inertial sensors, force sensors, and electromyography appear to be the most appropriate wearable sensors to use. Several studies were conducted to verify the feasibility of using wearable sensors for sport applications by using both commercially available and customized sensors. The present study seeks to provide an overview of sport biomechanics applications found from recent literature using wearable sensors, highlighting some information related to the used sensors and analysis methods. From the literature review results, it appears that inertial sensors are the most widespread sensors for assessing athletes’ performance; however, there still exist applications for force sensors and electromyography in this context. The main sport assessed in the studies was running, even though the range of sports examined was quite high. The provided overview can be useful for researchers, athletes, and coaches to understand the technologies currently available for sport performance assessment.

In this paper we performed the evaluation of ankle motor performance and motor learning during a goal-directed task, executed using the pediAnklebot robot. The protocol consisted of 3 phases (Familiarization, Adaptation, and Wash Out) repeated one time for each movement direction (plantarflexion, dorsiflexion, inversion, and eversion). During Familiarization and Wash out subjects performed goal-directed movements in unperturbed environment, whereas during Adaptation phase, a curl viscous force field was applied and it was randomly removed 10 times out of 200. Ankle motor performance was evaluated by means of a set of indices grouped into: accuracy, smoothness, temporal, and stopping indices. Learning Index was calculated to study the motor learning during the adaptation phase, which was subdivided into 5 temporal intervals (target sets). The outcomes related to the ankle motor performance highlighted that the best performance in terms of accuracy and smoothness of the trajectories was obtained in dorsiflexion movements in the sagittal plane, and in inversion rotations in the frontal plane. Differences between movement directions revealed an anisotropic behavior of the ankle joint. Results of the Learning index showed a capability of the subjects to rapidly adapt to a perturbed force field depending on the magnitude of the perceived field.

Cortona Heritage ha preso inizio nel 2016 su proposta dell'Università degli Studi di Firenze, con la collaborazione del Comune di Cortona e del Museo dell'Accademia Etrusca e della Città di Cortona-MAEC.

Repeatability and reproducibility indices are often used in gait analysis to validate models and assess patients in their follow-up. When comparing joint kinematics, their interpretation can be ambiguous due to a lack of understanding of the exact sources of their variations. This paper studied four indices (Root Mean Square Deviation, Mean Absolute Variability, Coefficient of Multiple Correlation, and Linear Fit Method) in relation to five confusing-factors: joints’ range of motion, sample-by-sample amplitude variability, offset, time shift and curve shape. A first simulation was conducted to test the mathematics behind each index. A second simulation tested the influence of the curve shape on the indices using a Fourier’s decomposition. The Coefficient of Multiple Correlation and the Linear Fit method Coefficients were independent from the range of motion. Different Coefficients of Multiple Correlation were found among different joints, leading to misinterpretation of the results. The Linear Fit Method coefficients should not be adopted when time shift increases. Root Mean Square Deviation and Mean Absolute Variability were sensitive to all the confusing-factors. The Linear Fit Method coefficients seemed to be the most suitable to assess gait data variability, complemented with Root Mean Square Deviation or Mean Absolute Variability as measurements of data dispersion.

The human right ventricle is barely monitored during open-chest surgery due to the absence of intraoperative imaging techniques capable of elaborating its complex function. Accordingly, artificial intelligence could not be adopted for this specific task. We recently proposed a video-based approach for the real-time evaluation of the epicardial kinematics to support medical decisions. Here, we employed two supervised machine learning algorithms based on our technique to predict the patients’ outcomes before chest closure. Videos of the beating hearts were acquired before and after pulmonary valve replacement in twelve Tetralogy of Fallot patients and recordings were properly labeled as the “unhealthy” and “healthy” classes. We extracted frequency-domain-related features to train different supervised machine learning models and selected their best characteristics via 10-fold cross-validation and optimization processes. Decision surfaces were built to classify two additional patients having good and unfavorable clinical outcomes. The k-nearest neighbors and support vector machine showed the highest prediction accuracy; the patients’ class was identified with a true positive rate ≥95% and the decision surfaces correctly classified the additional patients in the “healthy” (good outcome) or “unhealthy” (unfavorable outcome) classes. We demonstrated that classifiers employed with our video-based technique may aid cardiac surgeons in decision making before chest closure.

Nowadays, wayside measurement systems of wheel-rail contact forces have acquired great relevance for the monitoring of rolling stock, especially for freight trains. Thanks to these solutions, infrastructure managers can check and monitor the status of rolling stock and, when necessary, impose corrective actions for the railway companies. On the other hand, the evaluation of contact forces is part of the rolling stock authorisation process [1] and a mainstone for the study of the running stability. The data provided by these measurements could give useful information to correlate the wear of the track with the frequency of applied loads, helping in the development of a better maintenance strategy of railway networks [2]. In this paper, the monitoring of vertical forces is based on the SMCV (Vertical Loads Monitoring System) method, where shear strains of the rail web are measured with a simple combination of four electrical strain gauges, placed on both sides of the rail web along each span. The research has identified self-diagnosis methods for the SMCV system to ensure the reliability and the quality of the measurements and to extend the knowledge of the system. The recorded signals have been processed and converted into easily interpretable physical quantities by means of MATLAB® algorithm.

The possibility of measuring predictive factors to discriminate athletes at higher risk of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury still represents an open research question. We performed an observational study with thirteen female basketball players who performed monopodalic jumps and single-leg squat tests. One of them suffered from an ACL injury after the first test session. Data gathered from twelve participants, who did not suffer from ACL injury, were used for a reliability analysis. Parameters related to leg stability, load absorption capability and leg mobility showed good-to-excellent reliability. Path length, root mean square of the acceleration and leg angle with respect to the vertical axis revealed themselves as possible predictive factors to identify athletes at higher risk. Results confirm that six months after reconstruction represents the correct time for these athletes to return to playing. Furthermore, the training of leg mobility and load absorption capability could allow athletes to reduce the probability of new injuries.

Enzymatic transamidation of gliadins by microbial transglutaminase (mTG) inhibits interferon-γ (IFN-γ) secretion by intestinal T cell lines in patients with celiac disease (CD). To gain insight into the cellular mechanisms underlying the down-regulatory effects of transamidation, we tested a single recombinant α-gliadin (r-gliadin) harbouring two immunodominant peptides, p13 (aa. 120–139) and p23 (aa. 220–239), in HLA-DQ8 transgenic mice, a model of gluten sensitivity. Mice were intranasally immunised with r-gliadin or r-gliadin transamidated by mTG (K-r-gliadin) along with cholera toxin, and the response of mesenteric lymph node cells was analysed by cytokine multiplex assay. An in vitro challenge with r-gliadin was characterised by secretion of specific cytokines featuring both innate immunity and the Th1/Th2/Th17 pattern of the adaptive response. Notably, transamidation specifically down-regulated the Th1 response. Structural studies performed on K-r-gliadin confirmed that specific glutamine residues in p13 and p23, previously found to be deamidated by tissue transglutaminase, were also transamidated by mTG. In silico analysis, simulating p13 and p23 peptide binding to HLA-DQ8 showed that these glutamines, in the form of glutamate, could interact by means of salt bridges with peculiar amino acids of the alpha chain of HLA-DQ8, suggesting that their transamidation may influence the HLA-restricted recognition of these peptides. Thus, the structural findings provided a rationale to explain the down-regulation of the r-gliadin-specific Th1 response following transamidation.

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury represents one of the main disorders affecting players, especially in contact sports. Even though several approaches based on artificial intelligence have been developed to allow the quantification of ACL injury risk, their applicability in training sessions compared with the clinical scale is still an open question. We proposed a machine-learning approach to accomplish this purpose. Thirty-nine female basketball players were enrolled in the study. Leg stability, leg mobility and capability to absorb the load after jump were evaluated through inertial sensors and optoelectronic bars. The risk level of athletes was computed by the Landing Error Score System (LESS). A comparative analysis among nine classifiers was performed by assessing the accuracy, F1-score and goodness. Five out nine examined classifiers reached optimum performance, with the linear support vector machine achieving an accuracy and F1-score of 96 and 95%, respectively. The feature importance was computed, allowing us to promote the ellipse area, parameters related to the load absorption and the leg mobility as the most useful features for the prediction of anterior cruciate ligament injury risk. In addition, the ellipse area showed a strong correlation with the LESS score. The results open the possibility to use such a methodology for predicting ACL injury.

Abstract Background In this paper we describe a configurable system based on laser displacement sensors for the contactless acquisition of 3D and 2D shapes of near-planar objects such as the paintings. Methods The system is based on two single-point laser triangulation sensors, a planar robot and a suite of software for driving the sensors, acquiring and post-processing the collected data. As a demonstration of the developed system we monitored three artifacts with the different aims to monitor the elastic properties of the artworks and the effectiveness of support frames in compensating the micro-climate fluctuations: the “Annunciazione” Antonello da Messina, the “Paliotto di San Domenico”, and the “Portiera Oddi-Montesperelli”. Results In the “Annunciazione” case, the canvas response to tensioning trials was analyzed. The collected data permitted to quantify a maximum displacement of 0.9 and 1.5 mm for the tensioning tests at 1 and 2 mm, respectively. In the “Portiera” case, the displacement difference between the left and right canvas sides was (1.0 ± 0.13)%, due to the inherent anisotropy of the material and by the structure of the artifact. In the “Paliotto” case, instead, minor displacement variations of the gilt leather due to the environment were observed, due to the analysis conducted prior of the restoration. Conclusions The overall obtained results demonstrated that the system is able to provide useful data for the art conservation field, with a max inaccuracy less than 100 μm.

The production of 3D printed safety protection devices (SPD) requires particular attention to the material selection and to the evaluation of mechanical resistance, biological safety and surface roughness related to the accumulation of bacteria and viruses. We explored the possibility to adopt additive manufacturing technologies for the production of respirator masks, responding to the sudden demand of SPDs caused by the emergency scenario of the pandemic spread of SARS-COV-2. In this study, we developed different prototypes of masks, exclusively applying basic additive manufacturing technologies like fused deposition modeling (FDM) and droplet-based precision extrusion deposition (db-PED) to common food packaging materials. We analyzed the resulting mechanical characteristics, biological safety (cell adhesion and viability), surface roughness and resistance to dissolution, before and after the cleaning and disinfection phases. We showed that masks 3D printed with home-grade printing equipment have similar performances compared to the industrial-grade ones, and furthermore we obtained a perfect face fit by customizing their shape. Finally, we developed novel approaches to the additive manufacturing post-processing phases essential to assure human safety in the production of 3D printed custom medical devices.

Nowadays, the use of lasers has become commonplace in everyday life, and laser protection has become an important field of scientific investigation, as well as a security issue. In this context, optical limiters are receiving increasing attention. This work focuses on the identification of the significant parameters affecting optical limiting properties of aqueous suspensions of pristine single-wall carbon nanohorns. The study is carried out on the spectral range, spanning from ultraviolet to near-infrared (355, 532 and 1064 nm). Optical nonlinear properties are systematically investigated as a function of nanohorn morphology, concentration, dimensions of aggregates, sample preparation procedure, nanostructure oxidation and the presence and concentration of surfactants to identify the role of each parameter in the nonlinear optical behavior of colloids. The size and morphology of individual nanoparticles were identified to primarily determine optical limiting. A cluster size effect was also demonstrated, showing more effective optical limiting in larger aggregates. Most importantly, we describe an original approach to identify the dominant nonlinear mechanism. This method requires simple transmittance measurements and a fitting procedure. In our suspensions, nonlinearity was identified to be of electronic origin at a 532 nm wavelength, while at 355 nm, it was found in the generation of bubbles.

This study aims to demonstrate the remarkable features of graphene-based fillers, which are able to improve the protective performance of acrylic coatings. Furthermore, the joint application of a cataphoretic primer and a spray top coat, containing graphene and functionalized graphene oxide flakes, respectively, enables the deposition of a double-layer coating with high conductivity and abrasion resistance properties, capable of offering excellent corrosion resistance to the metal substrate. The surface morphology of the single- and double-layer coatings was investigated by optical and electron microscopies, analysing the defectiveness introduced in the polymer matrix due to the filler agglomeration. The behavior in aggressive environments was assessed by exposure of the samples in the salt spray chamber, evaluating the blister formation and the adhesion level of the coatings. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements were employed to study the corrosion protection properties of the coatings, whose conductivity and abrasion resistance features were analysed by conductivity assessment and scrub tests, respectively. The incorporation of graphene-based fillers in the cataphoretic primer improves the corrosion protection properties of the system, while the graphene flakes provide the top coat spray layer with high conductivity and excellent abrasion resistance features. Thus, this work demonstrates the possibility of employing different types of graphene-based fillers and deposition methods for the creation of multifunctional coatings.

Activated phosphoinositide 3-kinase delta syndrome 1 (APDS-1) is a recently described inborn error of immunity caused by monoallelic gain-of-function mutations in the PIK3CD gene. We reviewed for the first time medical records and laboratory data of eight Italian APDS-1 patients. Recurrent sinopulmonary infections were the most common clinical feature at onset of disease. Seven patients presented lymphoproliferative disease, at onset or during follow-up, one of which resembled hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH). Genetic analysis of the PIK3CD gene revealed three novel mutations: functional testing confirmed their activating nature. In the remaining patients, the previously reported variants p.E1021K (n = 4) and p.E525A (n = 1) were identified. Six patients were started on immunoglobulin replacement treatment (IgRT). One patient successfully underwent hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), with good chimerism and no GVHD at 21 months post-HSCT. APDS-1 is a combined immune deficiency with a wide variety of clinical manifestations and a complex immunological presentation. Besides IgRT, specific therapies targeting the PI3Kδ pathway will most likely become a valid aid for the amelioration of patients’ clinical management and their quality of life.
