Tris(trimethylsilyl)borate (TMSB) has been intensively studied to improve the performances of lithium-ion batteries. However, it is still an interesting issue needed to be resolved for the research on the Li+ solvation structure affected by TMSB additive. Herein, the electrochemical tests, quantum chemistry calculations, potential-resolved in-situ electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements and surface analyses were used to explore the effects of Li+ solvation structure with TMSB additive on the formation of the cathode electrolyte interface (CEI) film in LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2/Li half cells. The results reveal that the TMSB additive is easy to complex with Li+ ion, thus weaken the intermolecular force between Li+ ions and ethylene carbonate solvent, which is benefit for the cycle performance. Besides, the changed Li+ solvation structure results in a thin and dense CEI film containing compounds with Si–O and B–O bonds which is favorable to the transfer of Li+ ions. As a result, the performances of the LNCM811/Li half cells are effectively improved. This research provides a new idea to construct a high-performance CEI film by adjusting the Li+ solvation structures.

Electronic structure of organic semiconductor that is governed by the packing structure in the solid state is critically important for the transport properties of organic-semiconductor solid. Dinaphtho[2,3-b:2′,3′-f]thieno[3,2-b]thiophenes (DNTT), which has been utilized as an active semiconducting material in high-performance organic field-effect transistors (OFETs), crystalized into a herringbone packing structure that affords the two-dimensional (2D) electronic structure. Here we have investigated effects of substituents on the packing structure of a series of DNTT derivatives modified with a (trialkylsilyl)ethynyl substituents. The packing structures of the derivatives with small (trialkylsilyl)ethynyl substituents, such as (trimethylsilyl)ethynyl (TMSE) (1) and (triethylsilyl)ethynyl (TESE) groups (2), were revealed to be the herringbone packing, whereas (triisopropylsilyl)ethynyl (TIPSE)-substituted DNTT (3) crystalized into a sandwich herringbone structure, in which face-to-face dimers of molecules are packed into a herringbone array. In-depth analyses of the packing structures by means of the functional-group symmetry-adapted perturbation theory (F-SAPT) calculations showed that the size of the TESE groups is critical to determine the packing structure; intermolecular interaction between the sterically demanding TIPSE groups does not allow 3 to crystalize into the herringbone structure that is favorable for the most of DNTT derivatives including 1 and 2. Although the sandwich herringbone structure has not been regarded as a potential one for efficient carrier transport in the solid state, the OFETs based on 1−3 showed comparable high mobility of 0.34 to 1.1 cm2 V−1 s−1, indicating that the sandwich herringbone structure is not necessarily quite unsuitable for carrier transport, which was also endorsed by the transfer integrals calculated based on the packing structure elucidated by the single crystal X-ray analysis. These results imply that versatile modifications on the molecular and packing structures can be applied to the DNTT core for the development of superior organic semiconductors.

Manganese dioxide (α-MnO2) and graphene oxide (GO nanocomposites were prepared and successfully characterized using Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR), field emission scanning-electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) mapping methods and Xray diffraction (XRD) analyses. This reagent is an efficient catalyst for the aerobic oxidation of trimethylsilyl (TMS), tetrahedropyranyl (THP), and methoxymethyl ethers (MOM) to their corresponding carbonyl compounds in the presence of K2CO3. All reactions were performed in n-hexane under mild and completely heterogeneous reaction conditions. Our novel method has the advantages of excellent yields, short reaction times, availability and reusability of the catalyst and simple and easy work-up procedure compared to the conventional methods reported in the literature.

An efficient synthesis (up to a 200 g scale) of 3-hydroxypyrrolidin-2-ones bearing alkyl substituents or functional groups at the C-5 position is described. The reaction sequence started from 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of in situ generated nitrile oxides with (meth-)acrylates into 3-substituted isoxazoline-5-carboxylates. The catalytic hydrogenolysis of the isoxazoline N-O bond was optimal upon using H2 (1 atm) at rt, with the following order of the catalyst activity: Pd-C > Pd(OH)2-C > Pt-C. The reactions with Pt-C were more selective for the synthesis of pyrrolidones, while Pd-C provided the fastest conversion rates. The stirring efficiency had a positive impact on conversion rather than elevated temperatures (up to 40 °C) or pressure (up to 50 atm). The diastereoselectivity was governed mainly by steric factors, with a dr of 1:1 to 3:1 (cis- and trans-isomers could be separated). Higher homologues (isoxazolinylacetates and -propanoates) were suitable for the synthesis of 6- or 7-substituted 4-hydroxypiperidones and 5-hydroxyazepanones, respectively. The proposed methods are tolerant to functional groups, including CF3 (but not CHF2 or CH2Cl), ester, and most N-Boc-protected amines. The utility of hydroxyl groups in lactams was shown by functional group transformations. Hydrogenolysis of C(5)-functionalized isoxazolines, bearing trimethylsilyl, phosphonate, or sulfone groups, was also studied to demonstrate limitations.

We report the isolation of vanadium(II) in a metal-organic framework (MOF) by the reaction of the chloride-capped secondary building unit in the all-vanadium(III) V-MIL-101 (1) with 1,4-bis(trimethylsilyl)-2,3,5,6-tetramethyl-1,4-dihydropyrazine. The reduced material, 2, has a secondary building unit with the formal composition [VIIV2III], with each metal ion presenting one open coordination site. Subsequent reaction with O2 yields a side-on η2 vanadium-superoxo species, 3. The MOF featuring V(III)-superoxo moieties exhibits a mild enhancement in the isosteric enthalpy of adsorption for methane compared to the parent V-MIL-101. We present this synthetic methodology as a potentially broad way to access low-valent open metal sites within MOFs without causing a loss of crystallinity or porosity. The low-valent sites can serve as isolable intermediates to access species otherwise inaccessible by direct synthesis.

The use of iminophosphoryl-tethered ruthenium carbene complexes for activation of secondary phosphine P-H bonds is reported. Complexes of type [(p-cymene)-RuC(SO 2 Ph)(PPh 2 NR)] (with R = SiMe 3 or 4-C 6 H 4 -NO 2 ) were found to exhibit different reactivities depending on the electronics of the applied phosphine and the substituent at the iminophosphoryl moiety. Hence, the electron-rich silyl-substituted complex undergoes cyclometallation or shift of the imine moiety after cooperative activation of the P-H bond across the M=C linkage, depending on the electronics of the applied phosphine. Deuteration experiments and computational studies proved that cyclometallation is initiated by the activation process at the M=C bond and triggered by the high electron-density at the metal in the phosphido intermediates. Consistently, replacement of the trimethylsilyl (TMS) group by the electron-withdrawing 4-nitrophenyl substituent allowed for the selective cooperative P-H activation to form stable activation products.

The reaction of 2 equiv of LiN(SiMe3)2·Et2O with TiCl3(NMe3)2 or VCl3(NMe3)2 afforded the dimeric, halide bridged complexes [Ti(μ-Cl){N(SiMe3)2}2]2 (1) or [V(μ-Cl){N(SiMe3)2}2]2 (2) in moderate yields. The reduction of titanium complex 1 with 3 equiv of 5% (wt) Na/NaCl gave the mixed metal titanium/sodium hydride cluster Ti2(μ-H)2{N(SiMe3)2}3{N(SiMe3)(SiMe2CH)}(Na) (3), which was formed by activation of two C-H bonds at a single methyl group of one of the bis(trimethylsilyl)amide ligands. Attempts to form the analogous vanadium complex by reduction of 2 gave only intractable products. Treatment of Co{N(SiMe3)2}2 with 1 equiv of BrN(SiMe3)2 (which was previously shown to give the unique three-coordinate cobalt(III) trisamide Co{N(SiMe3)2}3) afforded the polymeric [(μ-Br)Co{μ-N(SiMe3)(SiMe2CH2CH2Me2Si)(Me3Si)μ-N}Co(μ-Br)]∞ (4) as a second product, which was shown by a structural analysis to possess a carbon-carbon bond formed between the two ligands. Attempts to isolate manganese and iron complexes analogous to 4 were unsuccessful. The role of bromine in these reactions was further studied by examining the reaction of 0.5 equiv of elemental bromine with [Mn{N(SiMe3)2}2]2 or [Co{N(SiMe3)2}2]2, which for manganese was shown to give the previously reported manganese trisamide Mn{N(SiMe3)2}3 but for cobalt gives the dimeric amide-bridged [Co(Br){μ-N(SiMe3)2}]2 (5).

A variety of 4-trifluoromethylquinolines bearing an aryl (or cyclopropyl, tert-butyl, trimethylsilyl) group at C-2 and a nitro group at ring position 6, 7 or 8 have been prepared in good to high yields from 3-substituted 1-(trifluoromethyl)prop-2-yne 1-iminium triflate salts and o-, m- or p-nitroaniline. These reactions include an aza-Michael reaction at room temperature followed by an intramolecular electrophilic aromatic substitution step, which requires additional thermal activation in most cases. In contrast, the conjugate addition of 2,4-dinitroanilines at the acetylenic iminium ions proceeds much more slowly and some of the adducts can be converted thermally into 2-(2,4-dinitrophenyl)-5-trifluoromethylpyrroles. Analogously, 2-(4-pyridyl)-5-trifluoromethylpyrroles were obtained from 3-aryl-1-(trifluoromethyl)propyn­iminium salts and 4-aminopyridinium triflate. A novel variation of the Truce–Smiles rearrangement is probably involved in the formation of these pyrroles.

The title compound was made by the reaction of the CpCo-complex of 2,3,7,8-tetrakis(trimethylsilyl) linear [3]phenylene, in which the metal coordinates one of the cyclobutadiene rings, with CpCo(C2H4)2. Because of its relative stability, a syn-dicobalt-bound configuration is indicated rather than its anti alternative.

We described several postprocessing methods to measure protein concentrations in human urine from existing 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) metabolomic spectra: (1) direct spectral integration, (2) integration of NCD spectra (NCD = 1D NOESY-CPMG), (3) integration of SMolESY-filtered 1D NOESY spectra (SMolESY = Small Molecule Enhancement SpectroscopY), (4) matching protein patterns, and (5) TSP line integral and TSP linewidth. Postprocessing consists of (a) removal of the metabolite signals (demetabolization) and (b) extraction of the protein integral from the demetabolized spectra. For demetabolization, we tested subtraction of the spin-echo 1D spectrum (CPMG) from the regular 1D spectrum and low-pass filtering of 1D NOESY by its derivatives (c-SMolESY). Because of imperfections in the demetabolization, in addition to direct integration, we extracted protein integrals by the piecewise comparison of demetabolized spectra with the reference spectrum of albumin. We analyzed 42 urine samples with protein content known from the bicinchoninic acid (BCA) assay. We found excellent correlation between the BCA assay and the demetabolized NMR integrals. We have provided conversion factors for calculating protein concentrations in mg/mL from spectral integrals in mM. Additionally, we found the trimethylsilyl propionate (TSP, NMR standard) spectral linewidth and the TSP integral to be good indicators of protein concentration. The described methods increase the information content of urine NMR metabolomics spectra by informing clinical studies of protein concentration.

Tandem [4+2]/[4+2] cycloaddition between bis-dienes containing two furan rings and dehydrobenzene as a dienophile was studied. It was shown that dehydrobenzene generated in situ from 2-(trimethylsilyl)phenyl trifluoromethanesulfonate is capable of a facile intermolecular [4+2] cycloaddition to a furan moiety of a diene at room temperature. The next step, that involves intramolecular Diels–Alder reaction (the IMDAF reaction) with the second furan ring, requires elevated temperature up to 80°С. It has been shown that even under optimal conditions the yields of the target annulated 1,4:5,8-diepoxynaphthalenes do not exceed 50%. The main byproducts are double cycloaddition adducts formed during the interaction of two aryne subunits with both furan rings of the initial bis-diene.

Incorporation of the fluoromethyl group can profoundly influence the physicochemical properties of organic molecules, offering a promising strategy for the discovery of novel pharmaceutical agents. Direct fluoromethylation of unfunctionalized C(sp2) centres can be achieved using fluoromethyl radicals, but current methods for their generation usually rely on the activation of non-commercial or expensive radical precursors via inefficient single electron transfer pathways, which limits their synthetic application. Here we report the development of a fluoromethylation strategy based on the generation of fluoromethyl radicals from commercially available fluoroiodomethane via halogen atom transfer. This mode of activation is orchestrated by visible light and tris(trimethylsilyl)silane, which serves as both a hydrogen- and halogen atom transfer reagent to facilitate the formation of C(sp3)–CH2F bonds via a radical chain process. The utility of this metal- and photocatalyst-free transformation is demonstrated through the multicomponent synthesis of complex α-fluoromethyl amines and amino acid derivatives via radical addition to in situ-formed iminium ions, and the construction of β-fluoromethyl esters and amides from electron-deficient alkene acceptors. These complex fluoromethylated products, many of which are inaccessible via previously reported methods, may serve as useful building blocks or fragments in synthetic and medicinal chemistry both in academia and industry., Generation of fluoromethyl radicals via visible light-mediated halogen atom transfer activation of fluoroiodomethane facilitates both the multicomponent synthesis of α-fluoromethyl amines and the hydrofluoromethylation of electron-deficient alkenes.

Tri-tert-butylphosphatetrahedrane (1) is shown here to act as a synthon of isomeric tri-tert-butylphosphacyclobutadiene in the presence of a Lewis acid or transition-metal complex. When it is combined with a substoichiometric amount of triphenylborane, compound 1 forms a ladderane-type dimer of tri-tert-butylphosphacyclobutadiene in 72% isolated yield. Trapping of a generated intermediate was achieved by repeating the experiment in the presence of excess styrene (20 equiv) or ethylene (1 atm), and the corresponding [4 + 2] cycloadducts of tri-tert-butylphosphacyclobutadiene were isolated in 88% and 74% yields, respectively. The platinum complex (Ph3P)2Pt(C2H4) also reacts with 1 to form an orange η2 complex of tri-tert-butylphosphacyclobutadiene in 80% isolated yield. Additionally, we report a novel method for generating a phosphinidenoid species via fluoride-induced trimethylsilyl fluoride elimination, leading to an improved preparative procedure for 1 (182 mg, 33% isolated yield).

A rapid and efficient method for the synthesis of overcrowded alkenes using (trimethylsilyl)diazomethane provides a range of substituted bisthioxanthylidenes. We show large conformational redox switching from folded to orthogonal states, which tolerates many substitution patterns. The facile access to bisthioxanthylidene switches with the potential for further functionalization, in combination with the reliable redox chemistry, provides major opportunities for the design of electrochemically responsive systems., A rapid and efficient methodology provides a range of substituted bisthioxanthylidenes, which undergo large conformational redox switching from folded to orthogonal states.

Lewis-base coordinated iminoborane adducts, in contrast to their isoelectronic analogue imines, remain largely unexplored given the lack of efficient synthetic strategies for generating robust compounds. Herein, we report the preparation of a cyclic amino iminoborane carbene complex 2 obtained in quantitative yield by adding NHC to the 1,8-(trimethylsilyl)aminonaphthalene complex of boron 1 to induce the elimination of trimethylsilyl chloride (TMSCl). The iminoborane-NHC adduct 2 shows unprecedented thermal stability both in the solid and solution phases, due to the rigid, pre-established geometry of the 1,8-diaminonaphthalene scaffold. Theoretical calculations reveal an exceptionally strong iminoborane-NHC bond as a consequence of the enhanced boron-center acidity in combination with the lower steric and electronic shielding. We show that the chemical bond can be understood as donor-acceptor interaction, leading to a different kind of electronic situation of the B═N π-bond. The high conjugation between the pz-lone pair of the tricoordinated sp2 hybridized N atom and the B═N π-system results in a particularly long B═N double bond distance. Taking advantage of the pendant lone pair of the dicoordinated sp2 hybridized N atom, the iminoborane-NHC adduct gives access to NHC-stabilized borenium cation 3 through the reaction with trimethylsilyl triflate (Me3SiOTf) or to the gallium adduct 4 by reacting with GaCl3. Incorporating an iminoborane functional group into a π-conjugated system brings a new bonding situation for broadening the scope of BN-containing polyaromatic systems.

A new practical method for construction of 3D porous carbon was developed through molecular design via one-step synthesis from commercially available carbon tetrabromide and bis(trimethylsilyl)acetylene on a gram-scale, and the obtained porous carbon has a well-defined sp1 -sp3 all-carbon structure (C13 ), high stability, and high surface area.

An efficient method has been developed for the synthesis of benzofuro[3,2-b]quinolines through tandem [4+2] cycloaddition/ aromatization under transition-metal-free conditions. A range of aurone­-derived N-tosyl-1-azadienes smoothly reacted with arynes, generated­ in situ via fluoride ion-induced 1,2-elimination of 2-(trimethyl­silyl)aryl triflates, delivering structurally diverse benzofuro[3,2-b]quinolines in moderate to good yields.

In this study, a 1:1 addition reaction using 1,1-diphenylethylene (DPE) derivatives, referred to as the "living anionic addition reaction", was established to regulate the sequence of vinyl compounds having negligible homopolymerizability. The stoichiometric and successive addition reaction between a DPE anion and more reactive DPE derivatives proceeded quantitatively when the electrophilicity of the DPE derivatives was sufficiently enhanced by electron-withdrawing groups such as (trimethylsilyl)ethynyl and acyl groups. The relative electrophilicity of the DPE derivatives was predicted by Hammett's law and the β-carbon chemical shifts of the carbon-carbon double bonds. AB- and ABC-type chain-end sequence-controlled polystyrenes with well-defined structures were synthesized by reacting two or three DPE derivatives with difunctional anionic living polystyrene in increasing order of their electrophilicity in a one-pot reaction.

A block copolymer that can be thermally cross-linked is synthesized by copolymerization of N-phenyl-2-vinylcarbazole (A) and trimethyl(2-(4-vinylphenyl)ethynyl)silane (B), followed by a deprotection reaction (d-PBAB). A triblock copolymer containing carbazole and (trimethylsilyl)ethynyl groups (PBAB) is first prepared using potassium naphthalenide in tetrahyrdofuran at −78 °C for 60 min. Well-controlled poly(A) and PBAB can be obtained under the conditions employed in this anionic block copolymerization. The well-defined d-PBAB with thermally cross-linkable ethynyl group is then prepared by the deprotection of the trimethylsilyl group from PBAB without side reactions. The thermal cross-linking behavior of d-PBAB is investigated using thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry. The d-PBAB is cross-linked under different conditions, and it is observed that the d-PBAB film heated at 250 °C for 60 min shows excellent solvent resistance and increased film density. In addition, the highest occupied molecular orbital and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energy levels of cross-linked d-PBAB are estimated to be −5.09 and −1.57 eV, respectively.

C(sp3)–H functionalization methods provide an ideal synthetic platform for medicinal chemistry; however, such methods are often constrained by practical limitations. The present study outlines a C(sp3)–H isocyanation protocol that enables the synthesis of diverse, pharmaceutically relevant benzylic ureas in high-throughput format. The operationally simple C–H isocyanation method shows high site selectivity and good functional group tolerance, and uses commercially available catalyst components and reagents [CuOAc, 2,2′-bis(oxazoline) ligand, (trimethylsilyl)isocyanate, and N-fluorobenzenesulfonimide]. The isocyanate products may be used without isolation or purification in a subsequent coupling step with primary and secondary amines to afford hundreds of diverse ureas. These results provide a template for implementation of C–H functionalization/cross-coupling in drug discovery., A copper-based catalyst system composed of commercially available reagents enables C–H isocyanation with exquisite (hetero)benzylic site selectivity, enabling high-throughput access to pharmaceutically relevant ureas via coupling with amines.

International audience; A series of acetyl pyrenes and pyrenyl ynones with and without tert-butyl groups showed distinct mechanofluorochromism (MFC). Four pairs of polymorphic solids were found out of six compounds and interestingly, each of them showed hypsochromic, bathochromic or off-to-on MFC. The MFC properties were rationalized by categorizing the packing schemes into herringbone, sandwich, beta and gamma motifs depending on the relative contributions of C⋯C (or π-π) against C⋯H contacts. The bulky tertbutyl and trimethylsilyl groups served not only to reduce the number of aggregation patterns but also to prohibit the complete back reactions in solid state. Our results suggest that the simple pyrene derivatives may be promising candidates for a novel group of mechanically-sensitive materials.

© 2021 American Chemical Society.An iridium-catalyzed reductive generation of both stabilized and unstabilized azomethine ylides and their application to functionalized pyrrolidine synthesis via [3 + 2] dipolar cycloaddition reactions is described. Proceeding under mild reaction conditions from both amide and lactam precursors possessing a suitably positioned electron-withdrawing or a trimethylsilyl group, using 1 mol% Vaska's complex [IrCl(CO)(PPh3)2] and tetramethyldisiloxane (TMDS) as a terminal reductant, a broad range of (un)stabilized azomethine ylides were accessible. Subsequent regio- and diastereoselective, inter- and intramolecular dipolar cycloaddition reactions with variously substituted electron-deficient alkenes enabled ready and efficient access to structurally complex pyrrolidine architectures. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations of the dipolar cycloaddition reactions uncovered an intimate balance between asynchronicity and interaction energies of transition structures, which ultimately control the unusual selectivities observed in certain cases.

The work by MacMillan et al. ( Angew. Chem., Int. Ed. 2018, 57, 12543-12548) developed an IrIII/NiII-metallaphotoredox-catalyzed difluoromethylation strategy of aryl bromides using CHF2Br as the CHF2 reagent in the presence of tris(trimethylsilyl)silane. Here, we present a density functional theory (DFT)-based computational study to understand special dual catalysis promoting the C(sp2)-C(sp3) coupling. The calculated results show that the energetically more favorable pathway involves the reductive quenching of a photocatalyst (IrIII/*IrIII/IrII/IrIII) and a Ni0-initiated catalytic cycle (Ni0/NiI/NiIII/NiI/Ni0 or Ni0/NiII/NiIII/NiI/Ni0). The calculations reveal not only the mechanistic details delivering the difluoromethylarene product but also the molecular-level picture of the generation of Ni0 species from the NiII precatalyst. Moreover, the calculations also rationalize the observed stoichiometric effect of CHF2Br in the reactions of aryl bromides with different substituted groups.

Constructing synthetic models of the nitrogenase PN -cluster has been a long-standing synthetic challenge. Here, we report an optimal nitrogenase PN -cluster model [{(TbtS)(OEt2 )Fe4 S3 }2 (μ-STbt)2 (μ6 -S)] (2) [Tbt=2,4,6-tris{bis(trimethylsilyl)methyl}phenyl] that is the closest synthetic mimic constructed to date. Of note is that two thiolate ligands and one hexacoordinated sulfide are connecting the two Fe4 S3 incomplete cubanes similar to the native PN -cluster, which has never been achieved. Cluster 2 has been characterized by X-ray crystallography and relevant physico-chemical methods. The variable temperature magnetic moments of 2 indicate a singlet ground state (S=0). The Mossbauer spectrum of 2 exhibits two doublets with an intensity ratio of 3:1, which suggests the presence of two types of iron sites. The synthetic pathway of the cluster 2 could indicate the native PN -cluster maturation process as it has been achieved from the Fe4 S4 cubane Fe4 S4 (STbt)4 (1).

On-surface synthesis is a powerful method for the fabrication of π-conjugated nanomaterials. Herein, we demonstrate chemoselective Sonogashira coupling between (trimethylsilyl)ethynyl and chlorophenyl groups in silylethynyl- and chloro-substituted partially fluorinated phenylene ethynylenes (SiCPFPEs) on Ag(111). The desilylative Sonogashira coupling occurred with high chemoselectivity up to 75 %, while the competing Ullmann and desilylative Glaser homocoupling reactions were suppressed. A combination of bond-resolved scanning tunneling microscopy/atomic force microscopy (STM/AFM) and DFT calculations revealed that the oligomers were obtained by the formation of intermolecular silylene tethers (-Me2 Si-) through CH3 -Si bond activation at 130 °C and subsequent elimination of the tethers at an elevated temperature of 200 °C.

Hydrophobization of cellulosic materials and particularly paper products is a commonly used procedure to render papers more resistant to water and moisture. Here, we explore the hydrophobization of unsized paper sheets via the gas phase. We employed three different compounds, namely palmitoyl chloride (PCl), trifluoroacetic anhydride/acetic anhydride (TFAA/Ac2O)) and hexamethyldisilazane (HMDS) which were vaporized and allowed to react with the paper sheets via the gas phase. All routes yielded hydrophobic papers with static water contact angles far above 90° and indicated the formation of covalent bonds. The PCl and TFAA approach negatively impacted the mechanical and optical properties of the paper leading to a decrease in tensile strength and yellowing of the sheets. The HMDS modified papers did not exhibit any differences regarding relevant paper technological parameters (mechanical properties, optical properties, porosity) compared to the non-modified sheets. XPS studies revealed that the HMDS modified samples have a rather low silicon content, pointing at the formation of submonolayers of trimethylsilyl groups on the fiber surfaces in the paper network. This was further investigated by penetration dynamic analysis using ultrasonication, which revealed that the whole fiber network has been homogeneously modified with the silyl groups and not only the very outer surface as for the PCl and the TFAA modified papers. This procedure yields a possibility to study the influence of hydrophobicity on paper sheets and their network properties without changing structural and mechanical paper parameters.

The synthesis of persistent sila‐ and germacyclopentadienyl (silolyl‐ and germolyl‐) radicals by careful stoichiometric reduction of the corresponding halides with potassium is reported. The radicals were characterized by EPR spectroscopy and trapping reactions. The reduction of tris(trimethylsilyl)silyl‐substituted halides was successful while smaller substituents (i. e., t‐Butyl, Ph) gave the corresponding dimers. The EPR spectroscopic parameter of the synthesized tetrolyl radicals indicate only small spin delocalization to the butadiene unit due to cross‐hyperconjugation. Silolyl‐ and germolyl anions are unavoidable byproducts and are isolated in the form of their potassium salts and characterized by X‐ray crystallography. The comparison of the molecular structures of two closely related potassium silolides provided an example for different coordination of the potassium cation to the silolyl anion (η1 vs. η5 coordination) that triggers the switch between delocalized and localized states., Persistent silolyl and germolyl radicals were synthesized by reduction of sterically congested halide precursors. The radicals are pyramidalized and show only little spin delocalization.

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR)-based screening of materials is a powerful tool for quality control, authenticity testing, and purity testing of compounds. However, reliance on 3-(trimethylsilyl)-propane-1-sulfonate (DSS) and 3-(trimethylsilyl)propanoic acid (TMSP) for referencing the spectra of aqueous samples is not without hazard, particularly with automated analyses. The assumption that these reference signals always represent 0 ppm is ubiquitous in NMR spectroscopy and is routinely used for spectral alignment. However, it has been found that cyclodextrins readily generate inclusion complexes with DSS and TMSP with the effect of rendering this assumption incorrect. These inclusion complexes alter the electronic shielding of the trimethylsilane functional groups on DSS and TMSP yielding a small, but significant, shift to a higher frequency in the signal relied upon for spectral referencing. As a result, samples containing traces of these compounds may be incorrectly declared fraudulent, inconsistent with standards, or adulterated. In order to maintain the viability of this screening method, vigilance and/or improved referencing of spectra is needed.

A formal (3+2) annulation reaction between isatin-derived N-tosylhydrazones and o-(trimethylsilyl)aryl triflates allows facile synthesis of spiro[indazole-3,3′-indolin]-2′-ones in high to excellent yields. Furthermore, indazolo[2,3-c]quinazolin-6(5H)-ones could be accessed from the same starting materials in one-pot fashion via an annulation/rearrangement pathway.

The chemistry of silylated sulfuric acid, O2 S(OSiMe3 )2 (T2 SO4 , T=Me3 Si; also known as bis(trimethylsilyl) sulfate), has been studied in detail with the aim of synthesizing the formal autosilylation products of silylated sulfuric acid, [T3 SO4 ]+ and [TSO4 ]- , in analogy to the known protonated species, [H3 SO4 ]+ and [HSO4 ]- . The synthesis of the [TSO4 ]- ion only succeeds when a base, such as OPMe3 that forms a weakly coordinating cation upon silylation, is reacted with T2 SO4 , resulting in the formation of [Me3 POT]+ [TSO4 ]- . [T3 SO4 ]+ salts could be isolated starting from T2 SO4 in the reaction with [T-H-T]+ [B(C6 F5 )4 ]- or T+ [CHB11 Br6 H5 ]- when a weakly coordinating anion is used as counterion. All silylated compounds could be crystallized and structurally characterized.

In this article, two aliphatic and aromatic types of dicationic acidic ionic liquids formulated as [H2-DABCO][ClO4], [H2-Bisim][ClO4]2 were used for the acceleration of the protection of alcohols as their corresponding trimethylsilyl (TMS), tetrahydropyranyl (THP) and methoxymethyl (MOM) ethers and the achieved results were compared. The performance of the catalyst was equal. All reactions were performed under mild conditions with good to high yields during short reaction times. Although in most cases the performance of both of the catalysts is equal, but TMS protection in the presence of [H2-Bisim][ClO4]2 needed lower amounts of the catalyst.

A series of rhenium complexes bearing a pyridine-based PNP-type pincer ligand are synthesized from rhenium phosphine complexes as precursors. A dinitrogen-bridged dirhenium complex bearing the PNP-type pincer ligands catalytically converts dinitrogen into ammonia during the reaction with KC8 as a reductant and [HPCy3 ]BArF 4 (Cy=cyclohexyl, ArF =3,5-(CF3 )2 C6 H3 ) as a proton source at -78 °C to afford 8.4 equiv of ammonia based on the rhenium atom of the catalyst. The rhenium-dinitrogen complex also catalyzes silylation of dinitrogen in the reaction with KC8 as a reductant and Me3 SiCl as a silylating reagent under ambient reaction conditions to afford 11.7 equiv of tris(trimethylsilyl)amine based on the rhenium atom of the catalyst. These results demonstrate the first successful example of catalytic nitrogen fixation under mild reaction conditions using rhenium-dinitrogen complexes as catalysts.

The beneficial role of lithium bis(trimethylsilyl) phosphate (LiTMSP), which may act as a novel bifunctional additive for high-voltage LiNi1.5Mn0.5O4 (LNMO)/graphite cells, has been investigated. LiTMSP is synthesized by heating tris(trimethylsilyl) phosphate with lithium tert-butoxide. The cycle performance of LNMO/graphite cells at 45 °C significantly improved upon incorporation of LiTMSP (0.5 wt %). Nuclear magnetic resonance analysis suggests that the trimethylsilyl (TMS) group in LiTMSP can react with hydrogen fluoride (HF), which is generated through the hydrolysis of lithium hexafluorophosphate (LiPF6) by residual water in an electrolyte solution or water generated via oxidative electrolyte decomposition reactions to form TMS fluoride. Inhibition of HF leads to a decrease in the concentration of transition-metal ion-dissolution (Ni and Mn) from the LNMO electrode, as determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. In addition, the generation of the superior passivating surface film derived by LiTMSP on the graphite electrode, suppressing further electrolyte reductive decomposition as well as deterioration/reformation caused by migrated transition metal ions, is supported by a combination of chronoamperometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and field-emission scanning electron microscopy. Furthermore, a LiTMSP-derived surface film has better lithium ion conductivity with a decrease in resistance of the graphite electrode, as confirmed by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, leading to improvement in the rate performance of LNMO/graphite cells. The HF-scavenging and film-forming effects of LiTMPS are responsible for the less polarization of LNMO/graphite cells enabling improved cycle performance at 45 °C.

The behavior of organic and organosilicon nitrogen-containing compounds such as N-(trimethylsilyl)N-(2-{2-[(trimethylsilyl)oxy]ethoxy]}ethyl)amine and 4-(trimethylsilyl)morpholine in the reactions with organic and organosilicon isocyanates has been studied. The effect of the substituent at the nitrogen atom on the composition, structure, and hydrolytic stability of the resulting products has been revealed.
