2. Comments on the Unified approach to the construction of Classical confidence intervals

Abstract

The paper comments on properties of the so-called "Unified approach to the construction of classical confidence intervals", in which confidence intervals are computed in a Neyman construction using the likelihood ratio as ordering quantity. In particular, two of the main results of a paper by Feldman and Cousins (F&C) are discussed. It is shown that in the case of central intervals the so-called flip-flopping problem, occuring in the specific scenario where the experimenter decides to quote a standard upper limit or a confidence interval depending on the measurement, can be easily avoided by choosing appropriate confidence levels for the standard upper limits and confidence intervals. In the F&C paper "upper limit" is defined as the upper edge of a confidence interval, whose lower edge coincides with the physical limit. With this definition of upper limit (F&C limit), in an approach which uses the likelihood ratio as ordering quantity, two-sided confidence intervals automatically change over to "upper limits" as the signal becomes weaker (Unified approach). In the present paper it is pointed out that this behaviour is not a special property of this approach, because approaches with other ordering principles, like central intervals, symmetric intervals or highest-probability intervals, exhibit the same behaviour. The Unified approach is presented in the F&C paper as a solution to the flip-flopping problem. This might suggest that the F&C limit is a standard upper limit. In order to exclude any misunderstanding, it is proposed in the present paper to call the F&C limit "upper edge of the confidence interval", even if its lower edge coincides with the physical limit.

Abstract

The long-duration GRB050713a was observed by the MAGIC Telescope, 40 seconds after the burst onset, and followed up for 37 minutes, until twilight. The observation, triggered by a SWIFT alert, covered energies above ~175 GeV. Using standard MAGIC analysis, no evidence for a gamma signal was found. As the redshift of the GRB was not measured directly, the flux upper limit, estimated by MAGIC, is still compatible with the assumption of an unbroken power-law spectrum extending from a few hundred keV to our energy range., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures, submitted to ApJ

Abstract

A search for gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) above 20 TeV within the field of view (1 sr) of the HEGRA AIROBICC Cherenkov array (29N, 18W, 2200 m a.s.l.) has been performed using data taken between March 1992 and March 1993. The search is based on an all-sky survey using four time scales, 10 seconds, 1 minute, 4 minutes and 1 hour. No evidence for TeV-emission has been found for the data sample. Flux upper limits are given. A special analysis has been performed for GRBs detected by BATSE and WATCH. Two partially and two fully contained GRBs in our field of view (FOV) were studied. For GRB 920925c which was fully contained in our FOV, the most significant excess has a probability of 7.7 10**-8 (corresponding to 5.4 sigmas) of being caused by a background fluctuation. Correcting this probability with the appropriate trial factor, yields a 99.7% confidence level for this excess to be related to the GRB (corresponding to 2.7 sigmas). This result is discussed within the framework of the WATCH detection., Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures. Accepted for publication in A&A

Abstract

The production of hadrons in charged-current (anti)neutrino interactions is studied with the bubble chamber BEBC exposed ot the CERN (anti)neutrino wide-band beam. Fast-hadron production in a neon target is found to be attennuated as compared to that in a hydrogen target. This feature is discussed within the theoretical models based on the idea of a hadron formation length. Abstract

The average multiplicities of charged hadrons and of π+, π- and π0 mesons, produced in {Mathematical expression}Ne and νNe charged current interactions in the forward and backward hemispheres of the W±-nucleon center of mass system, are studied with data from BEBC. The dependence of the multiplicities on the hadronic mass (W) and on the laboratory rapidity (yLab) and the energy fraction (z) of the pion is also investigated. Special care is taken to determine the π0 multiplicity accurately. The ratio of average π multiplicities {Mathematical expression} is consistent with 1. In the backward hemisphere {Mathematical expression} is positively correlated with the charged multiplicity. This correlation, as well as differences in multiplicities between {Mathematical expression} and {Mathematical expression}, {Mathematical expression} scattering, is attributed to reinteractions inside the neon nucleus of the hadrons produced in the initial {Mathematical expression} interaction. © 1988 Springer-Verlag.

Abstract

The production of the meson resonances ρ{variant}(770) (all three charge states), η(550), ω(783) and f2(1270) in {Mathematical expression} Ne and ν Ne charged current interactions is investigated in a bubble chamber experiment with BEBC at CERN. Except for the f2, the main features of resonance production are reasonably well described by the Lund model, although the average resonance multiplicities are overestimated by the model by (67±30)%. The average multiplicities of all resonances, including the f2, are well reproduced by a semiempirical model, whose parameters were determined from hadron interaction data. © 1989 Springer-Verlag.

Abstract

Lambda hyperons from v p and {Mathematical expression}p charged current interactions have been analysed for polarization. A significant polarization is observed for Λ particles in the quasi-elastic region for both types of interactions. Part of this polarization is due to the decay of highly polarized Σ(1385) resonances. The results are compared with simple predictions of the quark parton model. © 1985 Springer-Verlag.

Abstract

Neutral kaon to negative pion production ratios from vp and {Mathematical expression} charged current interactions in BEBC are presented and compared with LUND fragmentation model predictions. Good agreement is obtained with a strangeness suppression factor λ=0.203±0.014(stat)±0.010(sys). No evidence is seen for an energy dependence of λ in our kinematic region. © 1985 Springer-Verlag.

Abstract

The MAGIC telescope took data of very high energy ?-ray emission from the blazar Markarian 421 (Mrk 421) between 2004 November and 2005 April. We present a combined analysis of data samples recorded under different observational conditions, down to ?-ray energies of 100 GeV. The flux was found to vary between 0.5 and 2 crab (integrated above 200 GeV), considered a low state when compared to known data. Although the flux varied day by day, no short-term variability was observed, although there is some indication that not all nights show an equally quiescent state. The results at higher energies were found to be consistent with previous observations. A clear correlation is observed between ?-ray and X-ray fluxes, whereas no significant correlation between ?-ray and optical data is seen. The spectral energy distribution between 100 GeV and 3 TeV shows a clear deviation from a power law, more clearly and at lower flux than previous observations at higher energies. The deviation persists after correcting for the effect of attenuation by the extragalactic background light, and most likely is source-inherent. There is a rather clear indication of an inverse Compton peak around 100 GeV. The spectral energy distribution of Mrk 421 can be fitted by a one-zone synchrotron self-Compton model, suggesting once again a leptonic origin of the very high energy ?-ray emission from this blazar. ispartof: Astrophysical Journal vol:663 issue:1 pages:125-138 status: published

Abstract

The high-frequency-peaked BL Lacertae object Markarian~180 (Mrk~180) was observed to have an optical outburst in 2006 March, triggering a Target of Opportunity observation with the MAGIC telescope. The source was observed for 12.4 hr and very high energy $\gamma$-ray emission was detected with a significance of 5.5 $\sigma$. An integral flux above 200 GeV of $(2.3\pm0.7)\times10^{-11} {cm}^{-2} {s}^{-1}$ was measured, corresponding to 11% of the Crab Nebula flux. A rather soft spectrum with a photon index of $-3.3\pm0.7$ has been determined. No significant flux variation was found., Comment: Accepted by ApJ Letters, minor revisions

Abstract

The nearby BL Lacertae (BL Lac) object Markarian~421 (Mkn~421) at a red shift z=0.031 was observed to undergo strong TeV Gamma-ray outbursts in the observational periods from December 1999 until May 2001. The time averaged energy spectrum is well described by a power law with an exponential cut-off energy at 3.6(+0.4-0.3)_{stat}(+0.9-0.8)_{sys} TeV. The energy spectra derived for different average flux levels ranging from 0.5 to 10 * 10^{-11}ph/cm**2/s follow a clear correlation of photon index and flux level. Generally, the energy spectra are harder for high flux levels. From January to April 2001 Mkn~421 showed rapid variability (doubling time as short as 20 minutes), accompanied with a spectral hardening with increasing flux level within individual nights. For two successive nights (MJD 51989-51991, March 21-23,2001), this correlation of spectral hardness and change in flux has been observed within a few hours. The cut-off energy for the Mkn~421 TeV spectrum remains within the errors constant for the different flux levels and differs by 2.6+/-0.6_stat+/-0.6_sys TeV from the value determined for Mkn~501. This indicates that the observed exponential cut-off in the energy spectrum of Mkn~421 is not solely caused by absorption of multi-TeV photons by pair-production processes with photons of the extragalactic near/mid infrared background radiation., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, submitted to Astronomy&Astrophysics
