In this study, we examine the role of circumgalactic medium (CGM) angular momentum ($j_{\rm CGM}$) on star formation in galaxies, whose influence is currently not well understood. The analysis utilises central galaxies from two hydrodynamical simulations, SIMBA and IllustrisTNG. We observe a substantial divergence in how star formation rates correlate with CGM angular momentum between the two simulations. Specifically, quenched galaxies in IllustrisTNG show high $j_{\rm CGM}$, while in SIMBA, quenched galaxies have low $j_{\rm CGM}$. This difference is attributed to the distinct active galactic nucleus (AGN) feedback mechanisms active in each simulation. Moreover, both simulations demonstrate similar correlations between $j_{\rm CGM}$ and environmental angular momentum ($j_{\rm Env}$) in star-forming galaxies, but these correlations change notably when kinetic AGN feedback is present. In IllustrisTNG, quenched galaxies consistently show higher $j_{\rm CGM}$ compared to their star-forming counterparts with the same $j_{\rm Env}$, a trend not seen in SIMBA. Examining different AGN feedback models in SIMBA, we further confirm that AGN feedback significantly influences the CGM gas distribution, although the relationship between the cold gas fraction and the star formation rate (SFR) remains largely stable across different feedback scenarios., Comment: Submitted to A&A

Superthin galaxies are observed to have stellar disks with extremely small minor-to-major axis ratios. In this work, we investigate the formation of superthin galaxies in the TNG100 simulation. We trace the merger history and investigate the evolution of galaxy properties of a selected sample of superthin galaxies and a control sample of galaxies that share the same joint probability distribution in the stellar-mass and color diagram. Through making comparisons between the two galaxy samples, we find that present-day superthin galaxies had similar morphologies as the control sample counterparts at higher redshifts, but have developed extended flat `superthin' morphologies since $z \sim 1$. During this latter evolution stage, superthin galaxies undergo overwhelmingly higher frequency of prograde mergers (with orbit-spin angle $\theta_{\rm orb} \leqslant 40^\circ$). Accordingly the spins of their dark matter halos have grown significantly and become noticeably higher than that of their normal disk counterparts. This further results in the buildup of their stellar disks at larger distances much beyond the regimes of normal disk galaxies. Conventional galaxy mass estimation methods suffer from model assumptions and degeneracies. Machine learning, which reduces the reliance on such assumptions, can be used to determine how well present-day observations can yield predictions for the distributions of stellar and dark matter. In this work, we use a general sample of galaxies from the TNG100 simulation to investigate the ability of multi-branch convolutional neural network (CNN) based machine learning methods to predict the central (i.e., within $1-2$ effective radii) stellar and total masses, and the stellar mass-to-light ratio $M_*/L$. These models take galaxy images and spatially-resolved mean velocity and velocity dispersion maps as inputs. Such CNN-based models can in general break the degeneracy between baryonic and dark matter in the sense that the model can make reliable predictions on the individual contributions of each component. For example, with $r$-band images and two galaxy kinematic maps as inputs, our model predicting $M_*/L$ has a prediction uncertainty of 0.04 dex. Moreover, to investigate which (global) features significantly contribute to the correct predictions of the properties above, we utilize a gradient boosting machine. We find that galaxy luminosity dominates the prediction of all masses in the central regions, with stellar velocity dispersion coming next. A constant stellar mass-to-light ratio $M_\star/L$ has been widely-used in studies of galaxy dynamics and strong lensing, which aim at disentangling the mass distributions of dark matter and baryons. However, systematic biases arising from constant $M_\star/L$ assumption have not been fully quantified. In this work, we take massive early-type galaxies from the TNG100 simulation to investigate possible systematic biases in the inferences due to a constant $M_\star/L$ assumption. We construct two-component matter density models, where one component describes the dark matter, the other for the stars, which is made to follow the light profile by assuming a constant $M_\star/L$. We fit the two-component model directly to the {\it total} matter density distributions of simulated galaxies to eliminate systematics coming from other model assumptions. We find that galaxies generally have more centrally-concentrated stellar mass profile than their light distribution. Given the light profiles adopted (i.e., single- and double-S{\'e}rsic profiles), the assumption of a constant $M_\star/L$ would artificially break the model degeneracy {\it for non-constant} $M_\star/L$ systems. For such systems, without knowing the true $M_{\star}/L$ but assuming a constant ratio, the two-component modeling procedure tend to generally overestimate $M_{\star}/L$ by $30\%-50\%$, and underestimate the central dark matter fraction $f_{\rm DM}$ by $\sim 20\%$ on average., Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures, submitted to MNRAS

The effect of angular momentum on galaxy formation and evolution has been studied for several decades. Our recent two papers using IllustrisTNG-100 simulation have revealed the acquisition path of the angular momentum from large-scale environment (satellites within hundreds of kpc) through the circum-galactic medium (CGM) to the stellar discs, putting forward the co-rotation scenario across the three distance scales. In real observations, although the rotation signature for the CGM and environmental three-dimensional (3d) angular momentum are difficult to obtain, line-of-sight kinematics of group member galaxies and stellar disc kinematics of central galaxies are available utilizing existing group catalogue data and integral field unit (IFU) data. In this paper, we use (1) the group catalogue of SDSS DR7 and MaNGA IFU stellar kinematic maps and (2) the group catalogue of GAMA DR4 data and SAMI IFU stellar kinematic maps, to test if the prediction above can be seen in real data. We found the co-rotation pattern between stellar discs and satellites can be concluded with 99.7 percent confidence level ($\sim 3\sigma$) when combining the two datasets. In this paper, we propose a multiphysics finite element method for a quasi-static thermo-poroelasticity model with a nonlinear convective transport term. To design some stable numerical methods and reveal the multi-physical processes of deformation, diffusion and heat, we introduce three new variables to reformulate the original model into a fluid coupled problem. Then, we introduce an Newton's iterative algorithm by replacing the convective transport term with $\nabla T^{i}\cdot(\bm{K}\nabla p^{i-1})$, $\nabla T^{i-1}\cdot(\bm{K}\nabla p^{i})$ and $\nabla T^{i-1}\cdot(\bm{K}\nabla p^{i-1})$, and apply the Banach fixed point theorem to prove the convergence of the proposed method. Then, we propose a multiphysics finite element method with Newton's iterative algorithm, which is equivalent to a stabilized method, can effectively overcome the numerical oscillation caused by the nonlinear thermal convection term. Also, we prove that the fully discrete multiphysics finite element method has an optimal convergence order. We report the first statistical analyses of [CII] and dust continuum observations in six strong OI absorber fields at the end of the reionization epoch obtained by the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA). Combined with one [CII] emitter reported in Wu et al. (2021), we detect one OI-associated [CII] emitter in six fields. At redshifts of OI-absorbers in non-detection fields, no emitters are brighter than our detection limit within impact parameters of 50 kpc and velocity offsets between $\pm200\ {\rm km\ s^{-1}}$. The averaged [CII]-detection upper limit is $< 0.06$ Jy ${\rm km\ s^{-1}}$ (3$\sigma$), corresponding to the [CII] luminosity of $L_{\rm [CII]} <5.8\times 10^7\ L_{\odot}$ and the [CII]-based star formation rate of ${\rm SFR_{\rm [CII]}} < 5.5$ $M_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$. Cosmological simulations suggest that only $\sim10^{-2.5}$ [CII] emitters around [OI] absorbers have comparable SFR to our detection limit. Although the detection in one out of six fields is reported, an order of magnitude number excess of emitters obtained from our ALMA observations supports that the contribution of massive galaxies that caused the metal enrichment cannot be ignored. Further, we also found 14 tentative galaxy candidates with S/N of $\approx4.3$ at large impact parameters ($>50$ kpc) and having larger outflow velocities within $\pm 600$ km s$^{-1}$. If these detections are confirmed in the future, then the mechanism of pushing metals at larger distances with higher velocities needs to be further explored from the theoretical side., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. Using the final MaNGA sample of 10K galaxies, we investigate the dark matter fraction $f_{\rm DM}$ within one half-light radius $R_{\rm e}$ for about 6K galaxies with good kinematics spanning a wide range of morphologies and stellar velocity dispersion. We employ two techniques to estimate $f_{\rm DM}$: (i) Jeans Anisotropic Modelling (JAM), which performs dark matter decomposition based on stellar kinematics and (ii) comparing the total dynamical mass-to-light ratios $(M/L)_{\rm JAM}$ and $(M_{\ast}/L)_{\rm SPS}$ from Stellar Population Synthesis (SPS). We find that both methods consistently show a significant trend of increasing $f_{\rm DM}$ with decreasing $\sigma_{\rm e}$ and low $f_{\rm DM}$ at larger $\sigma_{\rm e}$. For 235 early-type galaxies with the best models, we explore the variation of stellar initial mass function (IMF) by comparing the stellar mass-to-light ratios from JAM and SPS. We confirm that the stellar mass excess factor $\alpha_{\rm IMF}$ increases with $\sigma_{\rm e}$, consistent with previous studies that reported a transition from Chabrier-like to Salpeter IMF among galaxies. We show that the $\alpha_{\rm IMF}$ trend cannot be driven by $M_{\ast}/L$ or IMF gradients as it persists when allowing for radial gradients in our model. We find no evidence for the total $M/L$ increasing toward the centre. We detect weak positive correlations between $\alpha_{\rm IMF}$ and age, but no correlations with metallicity. We stack galaxy spectra according to their $\alpha_{\rm IMF}$ to search for differences in IMF-sensitive spectral features (e.g. the $\rm Na_{\rm I}$ doublet). How galaxies acquire material from the circumgalactic medium (CGM) is a key question in galaxy evolution. Recent observations and simulations show that gas recycling could be an important avenue for star formation. This paper presents Keck Cosmic Web Imager (KCWI) integral field unit spectroscopic observations on a type-II quasar, Q1517+0055 at z = 2.65, a pilot study of our Ly${\alpha}$ nebulae sample at $z\approx 2$. We revealed diffuse emission of the Ly$\alpha$ 1216, HeII 1640, and CIV 1549 on the projected physical scale of 122 kpc, 45 kpc, and 79 kpc, respectively. The total Ly$\alpha$ luminosity is L$_{\rm Ly\alpha}$ = $3.04\pm 0.02 \times 10^{44}$ erg s$^{-1}$. The line ratio diagnostics shows that HeII/Ly$\alpha$ $\approx$0.08 and CIV/Ly$\alpha$ $\approx$0.28, consistent with the photoionization including recombination and photon pumping. We also identify the associated HI and CIV absorption from the spectra. By fitting the spectra, we derive both the column density and the velocity. We find that the velocity profile from both the absorption and the HeII emission exhibit increasing trends. Moreover, both the line ratio diagnostic from the emission and the column density ratio from the absorption confirm that the cool gas metallicity is $\geq Z_{\odot}$. The Hot Universe Baryon Surveyor (HUBS) is a proposed space-based X-ray telescope for detecting X-ray emissions from the hot gas content in our universe. With its unprecedented spatially-resolved high-resolution spectroscopy and large field of view, the HUBS mission will be uniquely qualified to measure the physical and chemical properties of the hot gas in the interstellar medium, the circumgalactic medium, the intergalactic medium, and the intracluster medium. These measurements will be valuable for two key scientific goals of HUBS, namely to unravel the AGN and stellar feedback physics that governs the formation and evolution of galaxies, and to probe the baryon budget and multi-phase states from galactic to cosmological scales. In addition to these two goals, the HUBS mission will also help us solve some problems in the fields of galaxy clusters, AGNs, diffuse X-ray backgrounds, supernova remnants, and compact objects. Stars form in galaxies, from gas that has been accreted from the intergalactic medium. Simulations have shown that recycling of gas-the reaccretion of gas that was previously ejected from a galaxy-could sustain star formation in the early Universe. We observe the gas surrounding a massive galaxy at redshift 2.3 and detect emission lines from neutral hydrogen, helium, and ionized carbon that extend 100 kiloparsecs from the galaxy. The kinematics of this circumgalactic gas is consistent with an inspiraling stream. The carbon abundance indicates that the gas had already been enriched with elements heavier than helium, previously ejected from a galaxy. This is the second paper of the MaNGA DynPop series, which analyzes the global stellar population, radial gradients, and non-parametric star-formation history of $\sim 10$K galaxies from the MaNGA Survey final data release 17 (DR17) and relates them with dynamical properties of galaxies. We confirm the correlation between the stellar population properties and the stellar velocity dispersion $\sigma_{\rm e}$, but also find that younger galaxies are more metal-poor at fixed $\sigma_{\rm e}$. Stellar age, metallicity, and mass-to-light ratio $M_{\ast}/L$ all decrease with increasing galaxy rotation, while their radial gradients become more negative (i.e. lower value at the outskirts). The exception is the slow rotators, which also appear to have significantly negative metallicity gradients, confirming the mass-metallicity gradient correlation. Massive disk galaxies in the green valley, on the $(\sigma_{\rm e},\rm Age)$ plane, show the most negative age and metallicity gradients, consistent with their old central bulges surrounded by young star-forming disks and metal-poor gas accretion. Galaxies with high $\sigma_{\rm e}$, steep total mass-density slope, low dark matter fraction, high $M_{\ast}/L$, and high metallicity have the highest star-formation rate at earlier times, and are currently quenched. We also discover a population of low-mass star-forming galaxies with low rotation but physically distinct from the massive slow rotators. The fast growth of supermassive black holes and their feedback to the host galaxies play an important role in regulating the evolution of galaxies, especially in the early Universe. However, due to cosmological dimming and the limited angular resolution of most observations, it is difficult to resolve the feedback from the active galactic nuclei (AGN) to their host galaxies. Gravitational lensing, for its magnification, provides a powerful tool to spatially differentiate emission originated from AGN and host galaxy at high redshifts. Here we report a discovery of a radio lobe in a strongly lensed starburst quasar, H1413+117 or Cloverleaf at redshift $z= 2.56$, based on observational data at optical, sub-millimetre, and radio wavelengths. With both parametric and non-parametric lens models and with reconstructed images on the source plane, we find a differentially lensed, kpc scaled, single-sided radio lobe, located at ${\sim}1.2\,\mathrm{kpc}$ to the north west of the host galaxy on the source plane. From the spectral energy distribution in radio bands, we find that the radio lobe has an energy turning point residing between 1.5 GHz and 8 GHz, indicating an age of 20--50 Myr. This could indicate a feedback switching of Cloverleaf quasar from the jet mode to the quasar mode.

In the context of gravitational lensing, the density profile of lensing galaxies is often considered to be perfectly elliptical. Potential angular structures are generally ignored, except to explain flux ratios anomalies. Surprisingly, the impact of azimuthal structures on extended images of the source has not been characterized, nor its impact on the H0 inference. We address this task by creating mock images of a point source embedded in an extended source, lensed by an elliptical galaxy on which multipolar components are added to emulate boxy/discy isodensity contours. Modeling such images with a density profile free of angular structure allow us to explore the detectability of image deformation induced by the multipoles in the residual frame. Multipole deformations are almost always detectable for our highest signal-to-noise mock data. However the detectability depends on the lens ellipticity and Einstein radius, on the S/N of the data, and on the specific lens modeling strategy. Multipoles also introduce small changes to the time delays. We therefore quantify how undetected multipoles would impact H0 inference. When no multipoles are detected in the residuals, the impact on H0 for a given lens is in general less than a few km/s/Mpc, but in the worst case scenario, combining low S/N in the ring and large intrinsic boxyness/discyness, the bias on H0 can reach 10-12 km/s/Mpc. If we now look at the inference on H0 from a population of lensing galaxies, having a distribution of multipoles representative of what is found in the light-profile of elliptical galaxies, we then find a systematic bias on H0 < 1%. The connection between halo gas acquisition through the circumgalactic medium (CGM) and galaxy star formation has long been studied. In this series of two papers, we put this interplay within the context of the galaxy environment on large scales (several hundreds of kpc), which, to a certain degree, maps out various paths for galaxy interactions. We use the IllustrisTNG-100 simulation to demonstrate that the large-scale environment modulates the circumgalactic gas angular momentum, resulting in either enhanced (Paper I) or suppressed (Paper II) star formation inside a galaxy. In this paper (Paper I), we show that the large-scale environment around a star-forming galaxy is often responsible for triggering new episodes of star formation. Such an episodic star formation pattern is well synced with a pulsating motion of the circumgalactic gas, which, on the one hand receives angular momentum modulations from the large-scale environment, yielding in-spiralling gas to fuel the star-forming reservoir, while, on the other hand, is affected by the feedback activities from the galaxy centre. As a result, a present-day star-forming galaxy may have gone through several cycles of star-forming and quiescent phases during its evolutionary history, with the circumgalactic gas carrying out a synchronized cadence of "breathing in and out" motions out to $\sim 100$ kpc., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS. The gas needed to sustain star formation in galaxies is supplied by the circumgalactic medium (CGM), which in turn is affected by accretion from large scales. In a series of two papers, we examine the interplay between a galaxy's ambient CGM and central star formation within the context of the large-scale environment. We use the IllustrisTNG-100 simulation to show that the influence exerted by the large-scale galaxy environment on the CGM gas angular momentum results in either enhanced (Paper I) or suppressed (Paper II, this paper) star formation inside a galaxy. We find that for present-day quenched galaxies, both the large-scale environments and the ambient CGM have always had higher angular momenta throughout their evolutionary history since at least $z=2$, in comparison to those around present-day star-forming disk galaxies, resulting in less efficient gas inflow into the central star-forming gas reservoirs. A sufficiently high CGM angular momentum, as inherited from the larger-scale environment, is thus an important factor in keeping a galaxy quenched, once it is quenched. The process above naturally renders two key observational signatures: (1) a coherent rotation pattern existing across multiple distances from the large-scale galaxy environment, to the circumgalactic gas, to the central stellar disk; and (2) an anti-correlation between galaxy star-formation rates and orbital angular momenta of interacting galaxy pairs or groups., Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The lack of adequate X-ray observing capability is seriously impeding the progress in understanding the hot phase of circumgalactic medium (CGM), which is predicted to extend to the virial radius of a galaxy or beyond, and thus in acquiring key boundary conditions for studying galaxy evolution. To this end, the Hot Universe Baryon Surveyor (\textit{HUBS}) is proposed. \textit{HUBS} is designed to probe hot CGM by detecting its emission or absorption lines with a non-dispersive X-ray spectrometer of high resolution and high throughput. The spectrometer consists of a $60\times60$ array of microcalorimeters, with each detector providing an energy resolution of $2~\mathrm{eV}$, and is placed in the focal plane of an X-ray telescope of $1^{\circ}$ field-of-view. With such a design, the spectrometer is also expected to enable studies of intra-group medium (IGrM) and the outer region of intra-cluster medium (ICM). To assess the scientific potential of \textit{HUBS}, we created mock observations of galaxies, groups, and clusters at different redshifts with the \tng simulation. Focusing exclusively on emission studies in this work, we took into account the effects of light cone, Galactic foreground emission, and background AGN contribution in the mock observations. From the observations, we made mock X-ray images and spectra, analyzed them to derive the properties of the emitting gas in each case, and compared the results with the input parameters from the simulation. The results show that \textit{HUBS} is well suited for studying hot CGM at low redshifts. The redshift range is significantly extended for measuring IGrM and ICM.

Galaxy morphologies, kinematics, and stellar populations are thought to be linked to each other. However, both simulations and observations have pointed out mismatches therein. In this work, we study the nature and origin of the present-day quenched, bulge-dominated, but dynamically cold galaxies within a stellar mass range of $10.3\,\leqslant\,\log\,M_{\ast}/\mathrm{M_{\odot}}\,\leqslant\,11.2$ in the IllustrisTNG-100 Simulation. We compare these galaxies with a population of normal star-forming dynamically cold disc galaxies and a population of normal quenched dynamically hot elliptical galaxies within the same mass range. The populations of the present-day quenched and bulge-dominated galaxies (both being dynamically cold and hot) used to have significantly higher star-formation rates and flatter morphologies at redshift of $z\sim 2$. They have experienced more frequent larger mass-ratio mergers below $z \sim 0.7$ in comparison to their star-forming disc counterparts, which is responsible for the formation of their bulge-dominated morphologies. The dynamically cold populations (both being star-forming and quenched) have experienced more frequent prograde and tangential mergers especially below $z \sim 1$, in contrast to the dynamically hot ellipticals, which have had more retrograde and radial mergers. Such different merging histories can well explain the differences on the cold and hot dynamical status among these galaxies. We point out that the real-world counterparts of these dynamically cold and hot bulge-dominated quenched populations are the fast- and slow-rotating early-type galaxies, respectively, as seen in observations and hence reveal the different evolution paths of these two distinct populations of early-type galaxies., Comment: 14 pages, 12 figures; accepted for publication in MNRAS
