Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a rare disorder, especially among adults, characterized by abnormal accumulation of dendritic histiocytes in various tissues, presenting as either single- or multi-system disease. In adults, spinal involvement is less common than long bone, while central nervous system manifestations, such as pituitary gland enlargement and stalk thickening, affect about a quarter of adult patients and may lead to significant endocrine disorders. Salivary gland involvement is another extremely rare manifestation of LCH. We report a 46-year-old lady who presented with back pain along with sensory and motor deficits in the lower limbs. Her blood pressure was elevated. Computed tomography angiography spotted a T6 vertebral body compression fracture. Magnetic resonance of the spine showed T6 vertebral body pathological collapse with epidural soft tissue component compressing the spinal cord. Other imaging modalities showed features suggestive of central nervous system and salivary gland involvement. She underwent T4-T8 pedicle screws fixation with T6 decompressive laminectomy and biopsy of the epidural lesion, which revealed histopathological features of LCH. This is an extremely rare case of adult-onset LCH with multi-system involvement: musculoskeletal, salivary and central nervous systems. This case could serve as a crucial reference for both clinicians, radiologists and researchers, enriching the existing knowledge base on adult-onset LCH.

Purpose To investigate the ability to salvage an acutely thrombosed dialysis access using rheolytic pharmacomechanical thrombectomy (PMT), the short- and medium-term patency rates and safety at a tertiary care hospital.

Parathyroid adenoma is the most common cause of primary hyperparathyroidism. Giant parathyroid adenoma is considered a rare subtype of parathyroid adenomas that weigh more than 3.5 grams and cause a small number of adenoma related hyperparathyroidism. We present a case of 68-year-old asymptomatic male patient who had hypercalcemia and markedly high parathyroid hormone level on routine blood testing. Radiological investigations demonstrated a large mediastinal mass that showed peripheral high uptake on sestamibi scan. Histopathology confirmed the diagnosis of giant parathyroid adenoma. Giant parathyroid adenomas can have an atypical radiological appearance and present as a mediastinal mass that resembles other mediastinal masses, making it important to include in the list of possible diagnoses.

Background: This study aimed to determine the prevalence of Antimicrobial Resistance Genes (ARGs), with a focus on colistin resistance in clinical A. baumannii, as well as the risk factors associated with A. baumannii infection in Jordanian patients. Methods: In total, 150 A. baumannii isolates were obtained from patients at a teaching hospital. The isolates were tested for antimicrobial susceptibility using disc diffusion and microdilution methods. PCR amplification was used to detect ARGs, and statistical analysis was conducted to evaluate the influence of identified risk factors on the ARGs acquisition. Results: More than 90% of A. baumannii isolates were resistant to monobactam, carbapenem, cephalosporins, Fluoroquinolones, penicillin, and β-lactam agents. Moreover, 20.6% of the isolates (n = 31) were colistin-resistant. Several ARGs were also detected in A. baumannii isolates. Univariate analysis indicated that risk factors and the carriage of ARGs were significantly associated P ≤ (0.05) with gender, invasive devices, immunodeficiency, systemic diseases, tumors, and covid-19. Logistic regression analysis indicated seven risk factors, and three protective factors were associated with the ARGs (armA, strA, and strB) P ≤ (0.05). In contrast, tetB and TEM were associated with 2 risk factors each P ≤ (0.05). Conclusion: Our study indicates a high prevalence of MDR A. baumannii infections in ICU patients, as well as describing the case of colistin-resistant A. baumannii for the first time in Jordan. Additionally, the risk factors associated with ARGs-producing A. baumannii infections among ICU patients suggest a rapid emergence and spread of MDR A. baumannii without adequate surveillance and control measures.

Background: The spleen is one of the most injured organs following blunt abdominal trauma. The management options can be either operative or non-operative management (NOM) with either conservative management or splenic artery embolization. The implementation of CT in emergency departments allowed the use of CT imaging as a primary screening tool in early decision-making. Consecutively, new splenic injury scoring systems, such as the CT severity index (CTSI) reported was established. Aim: The main aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of the implementation of CTSI scoring system on the management decision and outcomes in patients with blunt splenic trauma over 8 years in a level 1 trauma center. Methods: This is a retrospective study including all adult patients with primary splenic trauma, having NOM and admitted to our hospital between 2013 and 2021. This study was conducted in order to measure the effects of early period thermal conditioning, feed restriction, supplementation of orange peel essential oil (OEO) into ration or combinations of them on small intestinal morphology and density of serotonin-immunoreactive (IR) endocrine cells (ECs) found in small intestines. 168 7-day-old Japanese quails were divided into six groups of 24-h fasting or thermal conditioning and their subgroups with and without supplementation of OEO (300 ppm) into ration. We determined that fasting and thermal conditioning increased villus height for duodenum in control groups and for jejunum in OEO groups. In addition, we detected that while fasting and thermal conditioning increased villus height/crypt depth (VH/CD) ratio in duodenum and jejunum, these applications did not affect this ratio in ileum. We found that supplementation of OEO into ration increased the number of serotonin-IR ECs in crypts of small intestine. We revealed that early period thermal conditioning increased the number of serotonin-IR ECs in duodenum, jejunum, and ileum especially in groups in which OEO was supplemented into ration. These results indicated that applications of early period thermal conditioning and feed restriction in quails may generally prevent adverse effects, caused by heat stress, on intestinal morphology

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a common malignancy with a high mortality rate worldwide. It is a complex, multifactorial disease that is strongly impacted by both hereditary and environmental factors. The role of microbes (e.g., viruses) in the pathogenesis of CRC is poorly understood. In the current study, we explored the status of high-risk human papillomaviruses (HPV) and Epstein–Barr virus (EBV) in a well-defined CRC cohort using immunohistochemistry and polymerase chain reaction assays. Our data showed that high-risk HPVs were common (~80%) and EBV had a low presence (14–25%) in the CRC samples. The most common high-risk HPVs are HPV16, 31, 18, 51, 52 and 45 genotypes. The co-presence of high-risk HPV and EBV was observed in ~16% of the sample population without any significant association with the clinicopathological variables. We conclude that high-risk HPVs are very prevalent in CRC samples while EBV positivity is relatively low. The co-expression of the two viruses was observed in a minority of cases and without any correlation with the studied parameters. Further studies are necessary to confirm the clinical relevance and potential therapeutic (preventive) effects of the observations reported herein.

In this research, it was aimed to determine the predictive power of academic motivation and attitudes towards mobile learning on perceived learning in sports science students. 416 (197 female+219 male) sports science students were included in the research, which was conducted in accordance with the correlational survey model. In the research, "Perceived Learning Scale", Academic Motivation Scale" "Mobile Learning Attitude Scale" and "Personal Information Form" were used as data collection tools. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation and Regression analysis. When the findings of the study were examined, positive moderate and significant relationships were found between perceived learning and academic motivation in sports science students (p<0.05), and positive low-level significant relationships were found with mobile learning (p<0.05). In addition, it was determined that academic motivation and attitude towards mobile learning positively predicted learning (p<0.05). As a result, if perceived learning is desired to increase in a positive way, this research has shown that academic motivation and mobile learning are important variables that can affect this.

In this research, the level of technology addiction in physical education and sports teacher candidates and whether this level differs according to some demographic variables is aimed. The research was carried out using the screening model. 213 female and 279 male of total 492 people studying in teaching programs of physical education and sport from 4 different states universities in Turkey participated to the research. The data in the research were collected by "Technology Addiction Scale" and "Personal Information Form". Data were analyzed using independent groups t-test, one-way variance and Pearson correlation analysis. According to the research findings, while technology addiction scores of teacher candidates differ significantly according to gender and grade level (p <0.05), it did not differ significantly according to the academic achievement perception and weekly sports frequency variable (p> 0.05). Besides, no significant relationship was found between technology addiction and sports years. As a result, technology addiction levels of teacher candidates were found to be moderate.

The aim of this research is to examine the effect of online learning attitudes on online learning readiness of sports sciences students during the period of coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19). The research was designed with the correlational survey model. The population of research consisted of sports sciences students from the faculty in seven state universities in Turkey. The sample consisted of 599 (271 female + 328 male) sports sciences students studying at the Departments of Coaching Training, Physical Education and Sports Teaching, Recreation and Sports Management, selected by the easy sampling method from these faculties and taking courses from the online learning platform. Data in the research was collected by using "Online Learning Attitude Scale", "Online Learning Readiness Scale", and "Personal Information Form". The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation and regression analysis. According to the research findings; there is a moderately significant positive correlation between online learning attitude and online learning readiness (p <0.05). Also, online learning attitude was found to have a significant effect on online learning readiness (p <0.05). As a result; in the field of sports sciences, the necessity of establishing a positive online attitude and creating a basis for a successful online learning readiness to provide good online learning to the learner has been put forward.

The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between recreation department students' Facebook addiction and free time satisfaction levels and to determine whether they differ according to certain variables. 212 Turkish students, 108 males and 104 females studying at the Faculty of Sport Sciences Recreation Department in the 2018-2019 academic years, were included in the study. As the data collection tool, the personal information form prepared by the researcher, "Facebook Addiction Scale (FAS)" developed by Çam and Isbulan (2012), and "Free time Satisfaction Scale" (FTSS) developed by Bearli and Ragheb (1980) and adapted in Turkish by Karli et al. (2008)"were used. Descriptive statistics, independent groups t-test, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Pearson correlation tests were used in order to analyze the data. When the findings of the research are examined; there was no significant difference between Facebook Addiction and Free Time Satisfaction Scale sub-dimensions according to gender, age and monthly family income variables (p> 0.05). Among the findings, only a significant difference was found in the "daily free time period" variable in the FTSS "relaxation" sub-dimension (p <0.05), and no significant difference was found in the other sub-dimensions and Facebook addiction level (p> 0.05). In conclusion, while there is no significant relationship between recreational department students' Facebook addiction and free time satisfaction levels (p> 0.05), it can be said that student' free time satisfaction levels do not influence the level of addiction towards Facebook usage.

Abstract We determine the continuous dependence of solution on the parameters in a Dirichlet-type initial-boundary value problem for the pseudoparabolic partial differential equation.

Sensitivity to ambient air temperatures, consuming a large amount of fuel, and wasting a significant amount of heat dumped into the ambient atmosphere are three major challenges facing gas turbine power plants. This study was conducted to simultaneously solve all three aforementioned GT problems using solar energy and introducing a new configuration that consists of solar preheating and inlet-air-cooling systems. In this study, air was preheated at a combustion chamber inlet using parabolic trough collectors. Then, inlet air to the compressor was cooled by these collectors by operating an absorption cooling cycle. At the design point conditions, this novel proposed integration resulted in a 6.87% relative increase in generated power and a 10.53% relative decrement in fuel consumption, achieving a 19.45% relative increment in the plant's thermal efficiency. This was accompanied by a reduction of 0.026 kg/s, 4.2 kg/s, and 0.278 kg/s in CO2, CO, and NOx emissions, respectively. Finally, spider diagrams were employed to assess the impact of the operating parameters on the overall system's performance and its associated environmental implications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Critical thinking plays an important role in decision-making and implementing daily tasks which includes searching, obtaining, evaluating, analysing, synthesising and conceptualising information. The aim of this study was to identify and compare the level of critical thinking among nursing students in Faculty of Medicine UKM based on systematic analysis, thinking in and out of the box domains. This was a cross-sectional study that utilised a self-administered Google Form online questionnaire on the level of critical thinking levels and domains. There were 115 nursing students in the Faculty of Medicine, UKM comprising of Year 1 (34.9%), Year 2 (26.1%), Year 3 (16.5%) and Year 4 (23.5%). The result showed that overall level of critical thinking was at intermediate level (mean=3.815, s.d=0.431) with systematic analysis domain was at intermediate level (mean=4.027, s.d=0.522), thinking in the box domain at low level (mean=2.547, s.d=0.688) and thinking out of the box domain was at intermediate level (mean=4.181, s.d=0.600). Further analysis showed that there was significant difference between students Year 2 with Year 3 and Year 3 with Year 4 in thinking out of the box domain (p=0.006). There is growing evidence that presence of essential trace elements that pose risk for coronary heart disease (CHD) patients. A meta-analysis was conducted on the levels of trace elements Copper (Cu), Zinc (Zn), Iron (Fe), Manganese (Mn), Cobalt (Co) and Chromium (Cr) in CHD patients. Eligible articles from the databases of Web of Science, Scopus, PubMed, EBSCOHost and Ovid were searched based on PRISMA guidelines. English articles published between 2011 to 2021 were included and analysed by descriptive statistics and RevMan 5.4. Quality assessment was assessed with Newcastle-Ottawa scale. There were six studies selected with 322 participants' data. Trace elements Cu (SMD=-0.13, 95%CI=[-0.99, 0.73], I2=92%, p=0.77), Zn (SMD=-0.38, 95%CI=[-0.81, 0.06], I2=71%, p=0.09), Fe (SMD=0.47, 95%CI=[-1.19, 2.13], I2=97%, p=0.58) and Mn (SMD=0.11, 95%CI=[-0.11, 0.33], I2=0%, p=0.33) levels were not significant. Sensitivity analysis revealed significant Cu level among patients with CHD (SMD=-0.54, 95%CI=[-0.85, -0.22], I2=0%, p=0.0008) and Fe level among the controls (SMD=1.41, 95%CI=[0.08, 2.73], I2=95%, p=0.04). Whereas Co and Cr levels varied according to dietary and smoking behaviours. Overall quality assessment was medium-to-high quality. The origin of any pulpal disease would most commonly involve the most vicious microorganisms that are either aerobic or anaerobic, but predominantly the latter. The antimicrobial properties of MTA have been assessed by various authors that showed MTA had moderate to low antimicrobial activity against E.faecalis. Improving antimicrobial properties can enhance the healing rate to assess the physical and antimicrobial properties of a metronidazole incorporated formulation of mineral trioxide aggregate. The final setting time, compressive strength and antimicrobial properties were tested for 4 groups of materials. Group 1 - Mineral Trioxide aggregate - White MTA (Angelus, Londrina, PR, Brazil); Group 2 - Biodentine (Septodont, Saint Maur des Fossés, France); Group 3 - Newer MTA formulation with Metronidazole in powder; and Group 4 - Newer MTA formulation with Metronidazole in liquid Material in group 3 had the largest zone of inhibition against S.mutans and C.albicans while group 4 had the largest zone of inhibition against E.faecalis. This difference was found to be statistically significant (p < 0.05). The highest mean compressive strength was seen in group 2 followed by group 3 and 4 and the least in group 1 for all the time periods. Group 2 had the shortest setting time, followed by group 3 and group 4. Under the limitations of the present study, addition of metronidazole, either in the liquid or powder component, can have additive effects on the antimicrobial properties of the modified MTA with no alteration in its physical properties. This article discusses the outcomes of using AngioJet pharmacomechanical thrombectomy to manage occluded dialysis access in a tertiary referral governmental hospital in Qatar. The study found that AngioJet thrombectomy was successful in restoring flow in 91.9% of cases, with 79.4% of patients experiencing successful dialysis within 48 hours post-procedure. The primary patency rates at 1, 3, and 6 months were 87.5%, 78%, and 46.9% respectively, while the secondary patency rates at 3, 6, and 12 months were 87.5%, 66.7%, and 58.3% respectively. The study concludes that AngioJet is a safe and effective tool for salvaging arteriovenous fistula and graft access in dialysis patients. [Extracted from the article]

Abstract Background The EQ-5D is one of the most commonly used tools to establish health-related quality of life (QoL). EQ-5D data in atrial fibrillation (AF) patients in the Middle East are lacking. Objectives This study aims to evaluate the reliability and validity of the Arabic version of the EQ-5D in AF inpatients in Syria. Methods The study involved patients admitted to the emergency department of Tishreen’s University Hospital in Latakia with AF as the primary diagnosis between the 1st of June 2021 and the 1st of June 2023. Arabic versions of the EQ-5D, EQ-VAS and SF36 questionnaires were administered to patients. Validation was done using convergent, discriminant, and known-groups validity, while reliability was conducted using EQ-5D retesting within 2–4 weeks. Results 432 participants were included in the study with a mean ± standard deviation of 63 ± 15. Males represented 242 (56%) of the participants. All hypotheses relating EQ-5D responses to external variables were satisfied. All three validation hypotheses demonstrated that the EQ-5D had the convergent, discriminant and known group validity to assess QoL in this cohort. The intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) for test-retest reliability ranged between 0.74 and 0.88, while Cohen’s κ ranged between 0.72 and 0.86. Cronbach’s α value for internal consistency was 0.73. Conclusion The Arabic version of EQ-5D was valid and reliable in measuring QoL in AF inpatients in Syria. This validation opens the door for more widespread use of the EQ-5D in Arabic-speaking regions, facilitating better-informed healthcare decisions and improving patient care strategies in Syria and other Middle Eastern countries.

Objectives We assessed the CHA 2 DS 2 -VASc score for predicting hospital readmission risk and length of stay (LOS) in patients admitted with primary atrial fibrillation (AF). Methods This retrospective cohort study included patients with index admission for AF to Latakia’s tertiary center (May 2021–November 2023). Patients were followed 90 days to assess readmission. CHA 2 DS 2 -VASc was correlated with 90-day readmission, inpatient all-cause mortality, and LOS during index admission. Results In total, 717 patients were included; 320 (45%) were readmitted to the hospital within 90 days (58% men, 65% aged 6 (IRR: 5, 95% CI: 1.8–10.7), compared with a score of 0. There was an incremental increase in the hazard ratio (HR) of readmission from a score of 1 (HR: 2.3, 95% CI: 1.3–4.1) to a score of >6 (HR: 41, 95% CI: 31–72) compared with a CHA 2 DS 2 -VASc of 0. Conclusion CHA 2 DS 2 -VASc could predict 90-day hospital readmission and LOS during the index admission in patients admitted with primary AF.
