Search

The Einstein Probe (EP) achieved its first detection and localization of a bright X-ray flare, EP240219a, on February 19, 2024, during its commissioning phase. Subsequent targeted searches triggered by the EP240219a alert identified a faint, untriggered gamma-ray burst (GRB) in the archived data of Fermi/GBM, Swift/BAT, Insight-HXMT/HE and INTEGRAL/SPI-ACS. The EP/WXT light curve reveals a long duration of approximately 160 seconds with a slow decay, whereas the Fermi/GBM light curve shows a total duration of approximately 70 seconds. The peak in the Fermi/GBM light curve occurs slightly later with respect to the peak seen in the EP/WXT light curve. Our spectral analysis shows that a single cutoff power-law model effectively describes the joint EP/WXT-Fermi/GBM spectra in general, indicating coherent broad emission typical of GRBs. The model yielded a photon index of $\sim -1.70 \pm 0.05$ and a peak energy of $\sim 257 \pm 134$ keV. After detection of GRB 240219A, long-term observations identified several candidates in optical and radio wavelengths, none of which was confirmed as the afterglow counterpart during subsequent optical and near-infrared follow-ups. The analysis of GRB 240219A classifies it as an X-ray rich GRB with a high peak energy, presenting both challenges and opportunities for studying the physical origins of X-ray flashes (XRFs), X-ray rich GRBs (XRRs), and classical GRBs (C-GRBs). Furthermore, linking the cutoff power-law component to non-thermal synchrotron radiation suggests that the burst is driven by a Poynting flux-dominated outflow., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures, 3 tables

Crystal seeding enables a deeper understanding of phase behavior, leading to the development of methods for controlling and manipulating phase transitions in various applications such as materials synthesis, crystallization processes, and phase transformation engineering. How to seed a crystalline in time domain is an open question, which is of great significant and may provide an avenue to understand and control time-dependent quantum many-body physics. Here, we utilize a microwave pulse as a seed to induce the formation of a discrete time crystal in Floquet driven Rydberg atoms. In the experiment, the periodic driving on Rydberg states acts as a seeded crystalline order in subspace, which triggers the time-translation symmetry breaking across the entire ensemble. The behavior of the emergent time crystal is elaborately linked to alterations in the seed, such as the relative phase shift and the frequency difference, which result in phase dependent seeding and corresponding shift in periodicity of the time crystal, leading to embryonic synchronization. This result opens up new possibilities for studying and harnessing time-dependent quantum many-body phenomena, offering insights into the behavior of complex many-body systems under seeding.

We study the spin alignment of neutral rho mesons in a pion gas using spin kinetic or Boltzmann equations. The $\rho\pi\pi$ coupling is given by the chiral effective theory. The collision terms at the leading and next-to-leading order in spin Boltzmann equations are derived. The evolution of the spin density matrix of the neutral rho meson is simulated with different initial conditions. The numerical results show that the interaction of pions and neutral rho mesons creates very small spin alignment in the central rapidity region if there is no rho meson in the system at the initial time. Such a small spin alignment in the central rapidity region will decay rapidly toward zero in later time. If there are rho mesons with a sizable spin alignment at the initial time the spin alignment will also decrease rapidly. We also considered the effect on $\rho_{00}$ from the elliptic flow of pions in the blast wave model. Magnetar giant flares (MGFs), originating from noncatastrophic magnetars, share noteworthy similarities with some short gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). However, understanding their detailed origin and radiation mechanisms remains challenging due to limited observations. The discovery of MGF GRB 231115A, the second extragalactic MGF located in the Cigar galaxy at a luminosity distance of $\sim 3.5$ Mpc, offers yet another significant opportunity for gaining insights into the aforementioned topics. This Letter explores its temporal properties and conducts a comprehensive analysis of both the time-integrated and time-resolved spectra through empirical and physical model fitting. Our results reveal certain properties of GRB 231115A that bear resemblances to GRB 200415A. We employ a Comptonized fireball bubble model, in which the Compton cloud, formed by the magnetar wind with high density $e^{\pm}$, undergoes Compton scattering and inverse Compton scattering, resulting in reshaped thermal spectra from the expanding fireball at the photosphere radius. This leads to dynamic shifts in dominant emission features over time. Our model successfully fits the observed data, providing a constrained physical picture, such as a trapped fireball with a radius of $\sim 1.95 \times 10^{5}$ cm and a high local magnetic field of $2.5\times 10^{16}$ G. The derived peak energy and isotropic energy of the event further confirm the burst's MGF origin and its contribution to the MGF-GRB sample. Quark-gluon plasma's (QGP) properties at non-hydrodynamic and non-perturbative regimes remain largely unexplored. Here, we examine the response functions describing how a QGP-like plasma responds to initial energy-momentum disturbance in both static and Bjorken-expanding plasma at non-hydrodynamic gradient using the Boltzmann equation in the relaxation-time approximation (RTA). We show that the resulting response functions are remarkably similar in both static and expanding backgrounds at non-hydrodynamic gradients. While non-hydrodynamic response can not be described by the conventional first-order and second-order theories, its behavior is reasonably captured by the extended version of hydrodynamics proposed by us (arXiv: 2208.01046). The potential sensitivity of the Euclidean correlator to non-hydrodynamic response is also illustrated., Comment: 32 pages, 8 figures

We present a calculation of the spin alignment for unflavored vector mesons in thermalized quark-gluon plasma based on the Kubo formula in linear response theory. This is achieved by expanding the system to the first order of the coupling constant and the spatial gradient. The effect strongly relies on the vector meson's spectral functions which are determined by the interaction and medium properties. The spectral functions are calculated for the one-quark-loop self-energy with meson-quark interaction. The numerical results show that the correction to the spin alignment from the thermal shear tensor is of the order $10^{-4}\sim10^{-5}$ for the chosen values of quark-meson coupling constant, if the magnitude of thermal shear tensor is $10^{-2}$., Comment: 22 pages, 5 figures

Based on different neutron star-white dwarf (NS-WD) population models, we investigate the prospects of gravitational-wave (GW) detections for NS-WD mergers, with the help of early warnings from two space-borne decihertz GW observatories, DO-Optimal and DECIGO. We not only give quick assessments of the GW detection rates for NS-WD mergers with the two decihertz GW detectors, but also report systematic analyses on the characteristics of GW-detectable merger events using the method of Fisher matrix. With a sufficient one-day early-warning time, the yearly GW detection number for DO-Optimal is in the range of $ (1.5$-$1.9) \times 10^{3}$, while it is $ (3.3$-$4.6) \times 10^{4}$ for DECIGO. More importantly, our results show that most NS-WD mergers can be localized with an uncertainty of $O(10^{-2})\,\mathrm{deg}^2$. Given the NS-WD merger as a possible origin for a peculiar long-duration gamma-ray burst, GRB 211211A, followed with kilonova-like emissions, we further suggest that the GW early-warning detection would allow future electromagnetic telescopes to get prepared to follow-up transients after some special NS-WD mergers. GRB 211211A is a rare burst with a genuinely long duration, yet its prominent kilonova association provides compelling evidence that this peculiar burst was the result of a compact binary merger. However, the exact nature of the merging objects, whether they were neutron star pairs, neutron star--black hole systems, or neutron star--white dwarf systems, remains unsettled. This {\it Letter} delves into the rarity of this event and the possibility of using current and next-generation gravitational wave detectors to distinguish between the various types of binary systems. Our research reveals an event rate density of $\gtrsim 5.67^{+13.04}_{-4.69} \times 10^{-3}\ \rm Gpc^{-3}\ yr^{-1}$ for GRB 211211A-like gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), which, assuming GRB 211211A is the only example of such a burst, is significantly smaller than that of typical long- and short-GRB populations. We further calculated that if the origin of GRB 211211A is a result of a neutron star--black hole merger, it would be detectable with a significant signal-to-noise ratio (S/N), given the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA designed sensitivity. On the other hand, a neutron star--white dwarf binary would also produce a considerable S/N during the inspiral phase at decihertz and is detectable by next-generation spaceborne detectors DECIGO and the Big Bang Observer. As a valid tool for solving ground state problems, imaginary time evolution (ITE) is widely used in physical and chemical simulations. Different ITE-based algorithms in their quantum counterpart have recently been proposed and applied to some real systems. We experimentally realize the variational-based quantum imaginary time evolution (QITE) algorithm to simulate the ground state energy of hydrogen (H2) and lithium hydride (LiH) molecules in a superconducting qubit system. The H2 molecule is directly simulated using the 3-qubit circuit with unitary-coupled clusters (UCC) ansatz. We also combine QITE with the cluster mean-field (CMF) method to obtain an effective Hamiltonian. The LiH molecule is correspondingly simulated using the 3-qubit circuit with hardware-efficient ansatz. For comparison, the LiH molecule is also directly simulated using the 4-qubit circuit with UCC ansatz at the equilibrium point. All the experimental results show a convergence within 4 iterations, with high-fidelity ground state energy obtained. For a more complex system in the future, the CMF may allow further grouping of interactions to obtain an effective Hamiltonian, then the hybrid QITE algorithm can possibly simulate a relatively large-scale system with fewer qubits., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures

The nuclear equation of state (EOS) is at the center of numerous theoretical and experimental efforts in nuclear physics. With advances in microscopic theories for nuclear interactions, the availability of experiments probing nuclear matter under conditions not reached before, endeavors to develop sophisticated and reliable transport simulations to interpret these experiments, and the advent of multi-messenger astronomy, the next decade will bring new opportunities for determining the nuclear matter EOS, elucidating its dependence on density, temperature, and isospin asymmetry. Among controlled terrestrial experiments, collisions of heavy nuclei at intermediate beam energies (from a few tens of MeV/nucleon to about 25 GeV/nucleon in the fixed-target frame) probe the widest ranges of baryon density and temperature, enabling studies of nuclear matter from a few tenths to about 5 times the nuclear saturation density and for temperatures from a few to well above a hundred MeV, respectively. Collisions of neutron-rich isotopes further bring the opportunity to probe effects due to the isospin asymmetry. However, capitalizing on the enormous scientific effort aimed at uncovering the dense nuclear matter EOS, both at RHIC and at FRIB as well as at other international facilities, depends on the continued development of state-of-the-art hadronic transport simulations. The momentum distribution of particle production in heavy-ion collisions encodes information about thermalization processes in the early-stage quark-gluon plasma. We use kinetic theory to study the far-from-equilibrium evolution of an expanding plasma with an anisotropic momentum-space distribution. We identify slow and fast degrees of freedom in the far-from-equilibrium plasma from the evolution of moments of this distribution. At late times, the slow modes correspond to hydrodynamic degrees of freedom and are naturally gapped from the fast modes by the inverse of the relaxation time, $\tau_R^{-1}$. At early times, however, there are an infinite number of slow modes with a gap inversely proportional to time, $\tau^{-1}$. From the evolution of the slow modes we generalize the paradigm of the far-from-equilibrium attractor to vector and tensor components of the energy-momentum tensor, and even to higher moments of the distribution function that are not part of the hydrodynamic evolution. We predict that initial-state momentum anisotropy decays slowly in the far-from-equilibrium phase and may persist until the relaxation time., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

We derive the spin Boltzmann equations for spin-1/2 fermions in a non-relativistic model with four-fermion contact interaction which conserves spin degrees of freedom. A great advantage of the model is that the spin matrix elements in collision terms can be completely worked out and be put into such a compact form that one can clearly see how spins are coupled in particle scatterings. A semi-classical expansion in the Planck constant has been made and the on-shell part of the spin Boltzmann equation up to the next-to-leading order is derived. At the leading order the equilibrium spin distribution can be obtained from the vanishing of the collision term for the spin density. The spin chemical potential emerges as a natural consequence of spin conservation. The off-shell part of the spin Boltzmann equation is also discussed. The work can be extended to more sophisticated interaction such as nuclear force in order to apply to spin polarization phenomena in heavy-ion collisions at low energies., Comment: RevTex 4, 15 pages, 1 figure

We investigate the response of the near-equilibrium quark-gluon plasma (QGP) to perturbation at non-hydrodynamic gradients. We propose a conceivable scenario under which sound mode continues to dominate the medium response in this regime. Such a scenario has been observed experimentally for various liquids and liquid metals. We further show this extended hydrodynamic regime (EHR) indeed exists for both the weakly-coupled kinetic equation in the relaxation time approximation (RTA) and the strongly-coupled ${\cal N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills (SYM) theory. We construct a simple but nontrivial extension of M{\"u}eller-Isareal-Stewart (MIS) theory, namely MIS*, and demonstrate that it describes EHR response for both RTA and SYM theory. This indicates that MIS* equations can potentially be employed to search for QGP EHR via heavy-ion collisions., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

In this proceeding, we present our recent prediction on the local net Lambda polarization to search for the baryonic spin Hall effect (SHE) at RHIC BES energies. The baryonic SHE is induced by the gradients of baryon chemical potential, which leads to local polarization separation between baryons and anti-baryons. Based on hydrodynamic simulations with spin Cooper-Fryer formula, we propose to use $P^{{\rm net}}_{2,y}$ and $P^{{\rm net}}_{2,z}$, the second Fourier coefficients of net spin polarization to quantify this baryonic SHE. Future experimental observation of their non-trivial signatures could strongly support the existence of the baryon SHE in hot and dense QCD matter.

We revisit Minkowski's lost legacy on relativistic electromagnetism in order to resolve long-standing puzzles over the charge distribution of relativistic systems like hadrons. Hadrons are unique relativistic electromagnetic systems characterized by their comparable size and Compton wavelength $r_h \sim \lambda_C$. As such, it was recently realized that the traditional Sachs definition of the charge distribution based on a non-relativistic formula is invalid. We explain that this is the same problem pursued by Lorentz, Einstein and others, on the electromagnetism of a moving body. The cuprate high-temperature superconductors exhibit many unexplained electronic phases, but it was often thought that the superconductivity at sufficiently high doping is governed by conventional mean-field Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) theory[1]. However, recent measurements show that the number of paired electrons (the superfluid density) vanishes when the transition temperature Tc goes to zero[2], in contradiction to expectation from BCS theory. The origin of this anomalous vanishing is unknown. Our scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements in the overdoped regime of the (Pb,Bi)2Sr2CuO6+{\delta} high-temperature superconductor show that it is due to the emergence of puddled superconductivity, featuring nanoscale superconducting islands in a metallic matrix[3,4]. Our measurements further reveal that this puddling is driven by gap filling, while the gap itself persists beyond the breakdown of superconductivity. The important implication is that it is not a diminishing pairing interaction that causes the breakdown of superconductivity. Unexpectedly, the measured gap-to-filling correlation also reveals that pair-breaking by disorder does not play a dominant role and that the mechanism of superconductivity in overdoped cuprate superconductors is qualitatively different from conventional mean-field theory.

It is generally believed that long-duration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are associated with massive star core-collapse, whereas short-duration GRBs are associated with mergers of compact star binaries. However, growing observations have suggested that oddball GRBs do exist, and multiple criteria (prompt emission properties, supernova/kilonova associations, and host galaxy properties) rather than burst duration only are needed to classify GRBs physically. A previously reported long-duration burst, GRB 060614, could be viewed as a short GRB with extended emission if it were observed at a larger distance and was associated with a kilonova-like feature. As a result, it belongs to the Type-I (compact star merger) GRB category and is likely of the binary neutron star merger origin. Here we report a peculiar long-duration gamma-ray burst, GRB 211211A, whose prompt emission properties in many aspects differ from all known Type-I GRBs, yet its multi-band observations suggest a non-massive-star origin. In particular, significant excess emission in both optical and near-infrared wavelengths has been discovered, which resembles kilonova emission as observed in some Type-I GRBs. These observations point towards a new progenitor type of GRBs. We introduce a freeze-out procedure to convert the critical fluctuations in a droplet of quark-gluon plasma (QGP) that has, as it expanded and cooled, passed close to a posited critical point on the phase diagram into cumulants of hadron multiplicities that can subsequently be measured. The procedure connects the out-of-equilibrium critical fluctuations described in concert with the hydrodynamic evolution of the droplet of QGP by extended hydrodynamics, known as Hydro+, with the subsequent kinetic description in terms of observable hadrons. We introduce a critical scalar isoscalar field sigma whose fluctuations cause correlations between observed hadrons due to the couplings of the sigma field to the hadrons via their masses. We match the QGP fluctuations obtained by solving the Hydro+ equations describing the evolution of critical fluctuations before freeze-out to the correlations of the sigma field. In turn, these are imprinted onto correlations and fluctuations in the multiplicity of hadrons, most importantly protons, after freeze-out via the generalization of the familiar half-century-old Cooper-Frye freeze-out prescription which we introduce. The proposed framework allows us to study the effects of critical slowing down and the consequent deviation of the observable predictions from equilibrium expectations quantitatively. We also quantify the suppression of cumulants due to conservation of baryon number. We demonstrate the procedure in practice by freezing out a Hydro+ simulation in an azimuthally symmetric and boost invariant background that includes radial flow discussed in arXiv:1908.08539., Comment: 67 pages, 21 figures
