Objective The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to assess the clinical efficacy and safety of ultrasound (US)-guided high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) in the treatment of breast fibroadenoma in different studies.Methods Studies evaluating the efficacy and safety of US-guided HIFU in the treatment of histologically-proven FA with follow-up outcomes of more than 3 months were searched through MEDLINE/PubMed databases. Volume reduction rate (VRR) and side effects were extracted and compared for further analysis.Results Of 29 identified articles, 10 studies involving 385 women and more than 545 FAs met the inclusion criteria. The mean VRR at 6 months and 12 months after HIFU was 52.00% and 72.00%. In terms of intraoperative safety, nine studies reported mild to moderate pain, with an average visual analogue scale (VAS) score ranging from 1.60 to 7.10. The most common postoperative side effect associated with HIFU was subcutaneous ecchymosis and less frequent were pain, erythema, and skin pigmentation, most of which disappeared within weeks. No serious side effects were observed.Conclusion S-guided HIFU is an effective and safe noninvasive treatment for breast FA that does not cause serious side effects. Further studies are needed to explore crucial influencing factors of VRR.

Abstract When a high‐speed train approaches the insulated phase‐splitting section embedded between neighbouring power supply arms, the vacuum circuit breaker (VCB) installed on trains must be disconnected to maintain the traction power supply system as a no‐load condition for completing phase‐switching action, as the train passes through the phase‐splitting section depending on its inertia. However, when operating VCBs, the arc is easily triggered between the mobile contacts inside, accompanied by an overvoltage impulse. Herein, to explore the generating mechanism of inrush current and operational overvoltage, a model describing the ‘substation‐catenary‐train’ traction power supply system is launched based on an equivalent circuit modelling technique. Through the analysis of the transient VCB operational process, the phase of catenary voltage is directly related to the characteristics of the VCB switching‐on overvoltage, as the traction current's phase angle is relevant to the amplitude‐frequency characteristics of the VCB switching‐off overvoltage. Inrush current as a noteworthy element is related to the traction transformer's remanence. The automatic phase‐switching technique is utilised to suppress both operational overvoltage and inrush current, as the optimal combination of VCB switching‐on and switching‐off phases considering the balance between overvoltage and inrush current is achieved based on the particle swarm algorithm.

Abstract Background Wilms’ tumor (WT) is the most common renal tumor in childhood. Pyroptosis, a type of inflammation-characterized and immune-related programmed cell death, has been extensively studied in multiple tumors. In the current study, we aim to construct a pyroptosis-related gene signature for predicting the prognosis of Wilms’ tumor. Methods We acquired RNA-seq data from TARGET kidney tumor projects for constructing a gene signature, and snRNA-seq data from GEO database for validating signature-constructing genes. Pyroptosis-related genes (PRGs) were collected from three online databases. We constructed the gene signature by Lasso Cox regression and then established a nomogram. Underlying mechanisms by which gene signature is related to overall survival states of patients were explored by immune cell infiltration analysis, differential expression analysis, and functional enrichment analysis. Results A pyroptosis-related gene signature was constructed with 14 PRGs, which has a moderate to high predicting capacity with 1-, 3-, and 5-year area under the curve (AUC) values of 0.78, 0.80, and 0.83, respectively. A prognosis-predicting nomogram was established by gender, stage, and risk score. Tumor-infiltrating immune cells were quantified by seven algorithms, and the expression of CD8( +) T cells, B cells, Th2 cells, dendritic cells, and type 2 macrophages are positively or negatively correlated with risk score. Two single nuclear RNA-seq samples of different histology were harnessed for validation. The distribution of signature genes was identified in various cell types. Conclusions We have established a pyroptosis-related 14-gene signature in WT. Moreover, the inherent roles of immune cells (CD8( +) T cells, B cells, Th2 cells, dendritic cells, and type 2 macrophages), functions of differentially expressed genes (tissue/organ development and intercellular communication), and status of signaling pathways (proteoglycans in cancer, signaling pathways regulating pluripotent of stem cells, and Wnt signaling pathway) have been elucidated, which might be employed as therapeutic targets in the future.

Abstract In modern megacities, stray currents from metro systems intrude into multiple transformers' neutral points becoming a potential threat to the high‐capacity transformers. Neutral current anomalies are exacerbated in unprotected substations when we instal guards at single stations. This paper presents a system protection strategy for multiple substations affected by stray currents in modern megacities. The model, taking Shanghai as an example, includes the spatial distribution information of the urban electrical energy transmission structure, the power system, and the metro system. A Particle swarm algorithm is used to calculate the resistance values of the devices for each station. Further stability tests are performed to select the optimal protection solution. The results show that when protection is considered as a system, the protection runs well and the neutral current level remains below the unprotected level when the protection fails at a single station or multiple stations.

Abstract The grounding electrode line is an important part of the Ultra high voltage direct current (UHVDC) transmission system. It acts as the channel to conduct the unbalanced current and the grounding current.The arcing horn consists of a pair of electrodes installed in parallel at both ends of the insulator string, which provides a discharge channel for the fault current by an air gap to protect the insulators. In this paper, the voltage and current distributions of the arcing horn were studied when the grounding electrode line was struck by lightning. It is found that the current and voltage gradually decrease along the direction from the converter station to the earth electrode. An active arc extinguishing method based on variable resistance for arcing horn was proposed. An electromagnetic transient simulation model of the grounding electrode line is established based on the electrical parameters of a ±800 kV UHVDC transmission system. It is found that the absorbed energy of the arc extinguishing unit needs to be at least 31.2 and 49.6 kJ when the lightning current is 20 and 50kA, respectively. According to the calculation results, the arcing horn with arc extinguishing unit was developed and tested. The test results verifies that the designed arcing horn can meet the requirements of engineering application.

Plant communities may be co-invaded by invasive plants, sometimes even by congeneric invasive plants (CIPs). Despite the growing understanding of co-invasion in the environment, little is known about how CIP interactions and mechanisms regulate co-invasion. Darwin’s naturalisation conundrum predicts that the coexistence of closely related species is difficult due to their structural and behavioural similarities. Nevertheless, communities containing closely related species are more susceptible to being invaded because close relatives may favour similar environments; therefore, this hypothesis should be followed in the co-invasion of CIPs. To explore whether the phylogenetic relatedness and origins of invasive species to CIPs can promote or hinder co-invasion, we conducted a controlled interaction and soil-legacy greenhouse experiment to quantify the growth response of invasive plants and their congeners. We consistently found that CIPs of identical origin were more likely to co-invade compared to CIPs of distinct origins. CIPs of distinct origins exhibited an antagonistic effect on co-invasion by allelopathy. Invasive plant-conditioned soil was more conducive to the growth of CIPs of identical origin than CIPs of distinct origins. Our results revealed the different effects of invader–invader phylogenetic relatedness on co-invader success and impact, suggesting the operation of different mechanisms across co-invasion.

Abstract The dynamic response characteristics, including maximum jump height and unbalanced tension, of isolated‐span transmission lines after ice‐shedding are investigated by means of experiments. A reduced‐scale modelling method for ice‐shedding from conductor lines is presented and verified with numerical simulations and full‐scale test results in the literature. A parameter study on dynamic responses of isolated‐span conductors under three ice‐shedding scenarios, including whole span ice‐shedding, partial ice‐shedding and unzipping ice‐shedding, is carried out by means of reduced‐scale modelling tests. The effects of these parameters on the maximum jump height at typical positions and unbalanced tension in the tension tower are obtained. It is observed that the partial ice‐shedding scenario may be the worst situation for electrical insulation clearance rather than the whole span ice‐shedding scenario. Moreover, the position of maximum jump height along the span of isolated‐span transmission lines after ice‐shedding could be at around 2/5 of span length, which is different from the conventional opinion that the position is at the midpoint. The results may provide a foundation for the defining of the insulation clearance for an isolated‐span transmission line and the structure design of tension tower arms in an iced zone.

The excellent insulation performance of roof insulators is crucial to the reliability of operating trains. The complex environment encountered by trains may cause roof insulator insulation failure, thus affecting the normal operation of the train. The field operation experience shows that during the operation of Hainan CRHAF-A trains, partial arcs are generated frequently on the roof insulators and even flashover accidents occur. In addition, the insulation failure probability of the insulators in the coastal environment is higher than that in other areas, and pollution is an important factor leading to lower insulation performance. Therefore, the pollution accumulation characteristics of roof insulators are investigated and analyzed in this paper. The accumulated pollution simulation model is built based on the operating environment of the train, and the electric field, flow field, and pressure field around the roof insulators are simulated. This has important engineering application and economic value for the study of insulator anti-pollution.

Objective Diet acidification supplementation is known to influence intestinal morphology, gut microbiota, and on phosphorus (P) utilization of broilers. Alterations in intestinal barrier and microbiota have been associated with systemic inflammation and thus regulating bone turnover. Hence the effect of acidifier addition to drinking water on tibia mass and the linkages between intestinal integrity and bone were studied. Methods One-d-old male broilers were randomly assigned to normal water (control) or continuous supply of acidified water (2% the blend of 2-hydroxy-4-methylthiobutyric acid, lactic, and phosphoric acid) group with 5 replicates of 10 chicks per replicate for 42 d. Results Acidification of drinking water improved the ash percentage and calcium content of tibia at 42 d. Broilers receiving acidified water had increased serum P concentration compared to control birds. The acidified group showed improved intestinal barrier, evidenced by increased wall thickness, villus height, the villus height to crypt depth ratio, and upregulated mucin-2 expression in ileum. Broilers receiving drinking water containing mixed organic acids had a higher proportion of Firmicutes and the ratio of Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes, as well as a lower population of Proteobacteria. Meanwhile, the addition of acidifier to drinking water resulted in declined ileal and serum proinflammatory factors level and increased immunoglobulin concentrations in serum. Concerning bone remodeling, acidifier addition was linked to a decrease in serum C-terminal cross-linked telopeptide of type I collagen and tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase reflecting bone resorption, whereas it did not apparently change serum alkaline phosphatase activity that is a bone formation marker. Conclusion Acidified drinking water increased tibia mineral deposition of broilers, which was probably linked with higher P utilization and decreased bone resorption through improved intestinal integrity and gut microbiota and through decreased systemic inflammation.

Abstract To solve the pollution problem of insulators on ultra‐high voltage DC transmission lines, superhydrophobic coatings were presented and their pollution deposit morphology and pollution flashover voltage in electric field were studied by an artificial pollution deposit system. The experimental results show that the pollution on the surface of superhydrophobic coating is distributed in clusters, which inhibits the chain distribution on the surface of silicone rubber and improves the pollution flashover voltage. Secondly, the competition mechanism of the pollution flashover on the superhydrophobic coating surface was found. This competition mechanism can lead to the failure of the insulation performance of the superhydrophobic coating in severely polluted environments. Finally, a pollution flashover model of superhydrophobic coating is proposed to explain the competition mechanism, which is affected by pollution and the discrete droplets. The conclusions of this study can provide an experimental and theoretical basis for the application of the superhydrophobic coating in the field of UHV DC external insulation.

Abstract Insulator pollution degree detection is of great significance for preventing a flashover. Equivalent salt deposit density, leakage current, and surface pollution layer conductivity are commonly used to describe insulator pollution degree; however, all these parameters have limitations in field application and real‐time monitoring. Non‐contact detection methods, such as infrared thermal imaging and ultraviolet imaging, only image insulators in a specific band, which makes the extracted features limited. Hyperspectral technology is the new comprehensive image data technology based on imaging spectroscopy that has the advantages of multiband high resolution. Therefore, a method based on hyperspectral image and spectral characteristics is proposed to fully characterize natural pollution information and accurately detect the pollution degree of insulators. The hyperspectral spectral line characteristics, image texture, and colour characteristic data of insulators were extracted and fused and then used to establish the pollution degree detection model on the basis of integrated learning classification algorithms. The results show that the model based on fusion data has an accuracy rate of 95.0%, which is more accurate than the model based on spectral line features only. Consequently, hyperspectral technology can realize the non‐contact detection of pollution degree and provide some guidance for cleaning the contamination of external insulation.

ObjectiveIn this study, we aimed to characterize the plasma metabolic profiles of brain atrophy and alcohol dependence (s) and to identify the underlying pathogenesis of brain atrophy related to alcohol dependence.MethodsWe acquired the plasma samples of alcohol-dependent patients and performed non-targeted metabolomic profiling analysis to identify alterations of key metabolites in the plasma of BA-ADPs. Machine learning algorithms and bioinformatic analysis were also used to identify predictive biomarkers and investigate their possible roles in brain atrophy related to alcohol dependence.ResultsA total of 26 plasma metabolites were significantly altered in the BA-ADPs group when compared with a group featuring alcohol-dependent patients without brain atrophy (NBA-ADPs). Nine of these differential metabolites were further identified as potential biomarkers for BA-ADPs. Receiver operating characteristic curves demonstrated that these potential biomarkers exhibited good sensitivity and specificity for distinguishing BA-ADPs from NBA-ADPs. Moreover, metabolic pathway analysis suggested that glycerophospholipid metabolism may be highly involved in the pathogenesis of alcohol-induced brain atrophy.ConclusionThis plasma metabolomic study provides a valuable resource for enhancing our understanding of alcohol-induced brain atrophy and offers potential targets for therapeutic intervention.

Corona discharge is one of the key factors that lead to the hydrophobicity loss of silicone rubber insulators used on the roof of high-speed trains. Based on the artificial experimental wind-tunnel platform, influences of AC corona intensity and airflow velocity on the hydrophobicity distribution of the silicone rubber surface were studied. According to the corona discharge phenomena and measured discharge current, influences of airflow velocity and voltage on the characteristics of corona discharge in a high-speed airflow environment were discussed. Results reveal that the hydrophobicity distribution on the silicone rubber surface shifts along the airflow direction in the high-speed airflow environment when the voltage is relatively high. When ionization zone develops to the needle-plate gap, the discharge path is deflected to the direction of airflow, which is responsible for the change of the hydrophobicity distribution. It is notable that the deflection distance decreases with the increase of airflow velocity. This is attributed to the fact that the electrons with variable horizontal distance from the electron to the plate electrode center are subjected to different electric field forces, resulting in different influences of high-speed airflow on them. These results are of engineering and theoretical significance for insulators used in high-speed railways.

ABSTRACT: The cytidine diphosphate diacylglycerol synthases (CDSs) gene encodes the cytidine diphosphate-diacylglycerol (CDP-DAG) synthase enzyme that catalyzes the formation of CDP-diacylglycerol from phosphatidic acid. At present, there are no reports of CDS2 in birds. Here, we identified chicken CDS2 transcripts by combining conventional RT-PCR amplification, 5′ rapid amplification of cDNA ends (RACE), and 3′ RACE, explored the spatio-temporal expression profiles of total CDS2 and the longest transcript variant CDS2-4, and investigated the effect of exogenous insulin on the mRNA level of total CDS2 via quantitative RT-PCR. Four transcripts of chicken CDS2 (CDS2-1, -2, -3, and -4) were identified, which were alternatively spliced at the 3′-untranslated region (UTR). Both total CDS2 and CDS2-4 were prominently expressed in adipose tissue, and exhibited low expression in liver and pectoralis of 49-day-old chickens. Regarding the spatio-temporal expression patterns of CDS2 in chicken, total CDS2 exhibited a similar temporal expression tendency with a high level in the later period of incubation (embryonic day 19 [E19] or 1-day-old) in the brain, liver, and pectoralis. While CDS2-4 presented a distinct temporal expression pattern in these tissues, CDS2-4 levels peaked at 21 d in the brain and pectoralis, while liver CDS2-4 mRNA levels were highest at the early stage of hatching (E10). Total CDS2 (P < 0.001) and CDS2-4 (P = 0.0090) mRNA levels in the liver were differentially regulated throughout the development of the chicken. Total CDS2 levels in the liver of Silky chickens were higher than that of the broiler in the basal state and after insulin stimulation. Exogenous insulin significantly down-regulated the level of total CDS2 at 240 min in the pectoralis of Silky chickens (P < 0.01). In conclusion, chicken CDS2 isoforms with variation at the 3′-UTR were identified, which was prominently expressed in adipose tissue. Total CDS2 and CDS2-4 presented distinct spatio-temporal expression patterns, that is they were differentially regulated with age in brain, liver, and pectoralis. Insulin could regulate chicken CDS2 levels in a breed- and tissue-specific manner.

In this paper, a surface discharge test was conducted on a silicone rubber insulating sheet, an epoxy resin insulating sheet, a porcelain insulating sheet, and a glass insulating sheet by using an independently constructed test platform of insulating media to study the discharge characteristics along the surface of insulating media under low air pressure and strong airflow environment. Experiments were conducted to obtain the variation in the discharge characteristics along the surface of the four kinds of insulation media with respect to airflow velocity at different air pressures. The discharge voltage characteristics and discharge morphology characteristics along the surface of the insulating media in a strong airflow environment at low air pressure are elucidated. This paper provides theoretical support for the selection of insulation materials and insulation protection design for a low air pressure and strong airflow environment.

Abstract Lipophilic statins which are blood brain barrier (BBB) permeable are speculated to affect the cholesterol synthesis and neural functions in the central nervous system. However, whether these statins can affect cholesterol levels and synaptic plasticity in hippocampus and the in vivo consequence remain unclear. Here, we report that long-term subcutaneous treatments of simvastatin significantly impair mouse hippocampal synaptic plasticity, reflected by the attenuated long-term potentiation of field excitatory postsynaptic potentials. The simvastatin administration causes a deficiency in recognition and spatial memory but fails to affect motor ability and anxiety behaviors in the mice. Mass spectrometry imaging indicates a significant decrease in cholesterol intensity in hippocampus of the mice receiving chronic simvastatin treatments. Such effects of simvastatin are transient because drug discontinuation can restore the hippocampal cholesterol level and synaptic plasticity and the memory function. These findings may provide further clues to elucidate the mechanisms of neurological side effects, especially the brain cognitive function impairment, caused by long-term usage of BBB-permeable statins.

Zinc indium sulfide (ZnIn2S4), as a significant visible-light-responsive photocatalyst, has become a research hotspot to tackle energy demand and environmental issues owing to its excellent properties of high stability, easy fabrication, and remarkable catalytic activity. However, its drawbacks, including low utilization of solar light and fast photoinduced charge carriers, limit its applications. Promoting the response for near-infrared (NIR) light (~52% solar light) of ZnIn2S4-based photocatalysts is the primary challenge to overcome. In this review, various modulation strategies of ZnIn2S4 have been described, which include hybrid with narrow optical gap materials, bandgap engineering, up-conversion materials, and surface plasmon materials for enhanced NIR photocatalytic performance in the applications of hydrogen evolution, pollutants purification, and CO2 reduction. In addition, the synthesis methods and mechanisms of NIR light-driven ZnIn2S4-based photocatalysts are summarized. Finally, this review presents perspectives for future development of efficient NIR photon conversion of ZnIn2S4-based photocatalysts.

ABSTRACT: The first purpose of this study was to reveal the distribution of the angel wing (AW) of geese. Our data showed that the total incidence of AW was 6.67% in 150-day-old White Zhedong (ZD) geese, the occurrence of AW in left wing is higher than that in right wing and bilateral wing than unilateral wing (both P < 0.01). In 70-day-old Hybrid-Wanxi (HW) geese, the total incidence of AW was 8.86%, with similar incidence rate between unilateral and bilateral. The sex has not apparently affected the incidence of AW in both ZD and HW geese. To explore the potential relationship between wing type with body weight, organ index, bone characteristic, or blood biochemical parameters in 70-day-old HW geese. We found that the body weight and organ index were similar between normal wing (NW) and AW geese. The length for the humerus, metacarpal and phalanx, and the phalanx weights, as well as the angle between the humerus and the radial ulna (HRU) in NW geese were pronounced greater than that in AW geese (P < 0.05). Furthermore, the angel wing was strongly associated with lower platelet size indicators. Collectively, AW affected the wing bone length, phalanx weight, and HRU, and the occurrence of AW may be related with dysfunctional platelet activation in geese.

The strong airflow generated during the operation of the high-speed train will carry sand and dust, causing high-speed sand and dust to hit the surface of the external equipment of the vehicle body, which will increase the surface roughness of the roof insulators, resulting in the changes of the hydrophobicity, fouling characteristics and insulation performance of the insulator. It poses a hidden danger to the safe and stable operation of the train. In our existing surface roughness testing methods, contact detections and optical stylus methods can cause damage to the insulator surface. Infrared detection methods will be disturbed by leakage current. Most methods need to be disassembled for testing. These methods have certain disadvantages. Therefore, this paper proposes a non-contact detection method for the surface roughness of the roof insulators. Firstly, we extract the image information of the insulator surface by hyperspectral imager, then preprocess the extracted hyperspectral image and use the continuous projection algorithm to reduce the data. Finally, we use the support vector machine to construct the insulator surface roughness discriminant model, and successfully realize the hyperspectral detection method of the surface roughness of the roof insulators, and verify the effectiveness of the proposed method by experiments. As a non-contact detection method, this method can detect the surface roughness of the roof insulators in the non-disassembly conditions, and help the field staffs to grasp the surface roughness of the high-speed train roof insulators in time.

In ultra HVDC transmission system, arcing horn gap breakdown makes the arc hard to extinguish, threatening transmission safety. Multi-chamber arrester (MCA) is applied in extinguishing the arc to ensure safety. Here, we investigated the arc motion characteristics of the MCA to analyze its arc extinguishing ability. First, a three-dimensional model of the arc plasma in a single chamber was established based on magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) theory, and the arc motion inside and outside the chamber were analyzed. Next, changes of temperature, velocity and pressure field were simulated. The results showed that the time required for arc totally exiting the chamber is approximately $96~\mu \text{s}$ , the airflow maximun velocity is about 865 m/s, and the highest pressure is more than 4 atm. Particularly, there is a flow reflux at the outlet, as the air flows inward from the outside and form an “oscillation”. Moreover, the arc motion characteristics of different discharge currents within different chamber structure were analyzed. It was found that the spacing between anode and cathode, the radius of electrodes and the outlet radius are the key factors regulating the airflow velocity, and the outlet radius of the chamber has the greatest influence. At last, the accuracy of our model was validated with experimental data.

The on-line detection of insulator pollution degree of transmission lines is important to the prevention and control of flashover. This paper proposed a non-contact detection method of insulator pollution degree based on hyperspectral technique. Firstly, hyperspectral images of the samples with different pollution degrees were obtained by hyper-spectrometer. Secondly, after original hyperspectral images were corrected by black-and-white correction and multiplicative scatter correction, hyperspectral curves from the region of interest (ROI) of corrected images were obtained. Finally, a multiclassification model of extreme learning machine (ELM) was built to realize the pollution degree classification of test samples. The results show that the absorption peak, the position of reflection peak, amplitude and the change trend of the hyperspectral curve obviously change with different kinds of pollution on the surface of silicone rubber, whereas only the amplitude obviously changes with same kind of pollution on the surface of silicone rubber; and the ELM-classification model can accurately and rapidly classify the pollution degree, with the pollution degree classification accuracy of NaCl, CaSO4 and mixed NaCl-CaSO4 respectively reaching 95%, 97.5% and 97.5%; and finally The ELM model based on hyperspectral curves data of the artificial pollution samples can classify the surface of insulator umbrellas with different pollution degrees, and the classification accuracy of CaSO4 and mixed NaCl-CaSO4 samples respectively are 87.5% and 90%. Consequently, the results of this study prove that hyperspectral technique has considerable potential for the non-contact detection of insulator pollution degree.

The gas–solid interface of high-voltage insulating equipment is a weaker part of insulating equipment insulation, and preventing the occurrence of discharge along the surface of insulating equipment is a critical problem for high-voltage insulation. This article investigates the discharge characteristics and charge movement characteristics of insulating media under an airflow environment. The surface discharge characteristics of the insulating medium in the airflow environment were obtained by using a high-velocity airflow test platform, and the surface discharge voltage characteristics, discharge path characteristics, and force conditions of the discharge process were analyzed. The surface charge motion characteristics of the insulating medium in the high-velocity airflow environment were also tested, and the distribution characteristics, dissipation characteristics and conduction mechanism of the surface charge of the insulating medium in the high-velocity airflow environment were revealed. The research results showed that: the discharge voltage along the insulating medium surface gradually increases with the increasing velocity of airflow; the discharge path along the surface of the insulating medium gradually shifts backward under the action of airflow; under the action of airflow, the charge on the insulating medium surface is blown away, thus reducing the charge concentration on the insulating medium surface; the trap level center of the insulating medium gradually decreases under the action of airflow, which provides the conditions for the charge blowing effect on the insulating medium surface. This investigation supplies the theory support for the protection of insulation equipment in an airflow environment and technical guidance for the insulation design of insulating equipment in an airflow environment to ensure the secure and steady running of insulating equipment in high-speed trains and high-voltage transmission lines.

An experimental study was conducted to investigate the discharge characteristics of short air gap and insulation surface under flame conditions. The influence of ac electric field on flame and the mechanism leading to the reduction of breakdown voltage under flame conditions are analyzed. Results show that under the ac electric field, the flame is deflected to the high voltage electrode, and compared with normal conditions (without flame), the breakdown voltage of the short air gap and the insulation surface is decreased by 74.4% and 70%, respectively. Besides, arc levitation appears at high probability under the flame conditions. Furthermore, the decrease of the breakdown voltage of short air gap and the flashover voltage of insulation surface under the flame conditions are mainly due to the increase of the air conductivity and the decrease of the air density. For the insulating dielectric, the change of the flashover path is also one of the main reasons for the decrease of the flashover voltage.

Gas discharge theory as an important subject has been widely employed to solve various questions related to discharge. However, previous concerns about gas discharge were mainly related to some discharge situations in static gases, which do not consider the influence of airflow on discharge. In this paper, the influence of both the airflow direction that is parallel to the field direction and the airflow velocity on air discharge is studied. The airflow is found to induce an obvious polarity effect, which results in a substantial difference in the breakdown voltage values. Compared with the breakdown voltage in static air, the breakdown voltage in airflow decreases because of the downwind effect and increases because of the headwind effect. The relative mean free path of electrons, the diffusion radius of electrons, and the air density are the three major factors affecting the discharge process, and they change with the airflow direction and airflow velocity. The combined effects of those three factors determine the variation trends in breakdown voltage with airflow velocity. These results can provide guidance for the design and insulation coordination of high-voltage equipment in an airflow environment.

A finite-difference approach with non-uniform meshes was presented for simulating magnetotelluric responses in 2D structures. We presented the calculation formula of this scheme from the boundary value problem of electric field and magnetic field, and compared finite-difference solutions with finite-element numerical results and analytical solutions of a 1D model. First, a homogeneous half-space model was tested and the finite-difference approach can provide very good accuracy for 2D magnetotelluric modeling. Then we compared them to the analytical solutions for the two-layered geo-electric model; the relative errors of the apparent resistivity and the impedance phase were both increased when the frequency was increased. To conclude, we compare our finite-difference simulation results with COMMEMI 2D-0 model with the finite-element solutions. Both results are in close agreement to each other. These comparisons can confirm the validity and reliability of our finite-difference algorithm. Moreover, a future project will extend the 2D structures to 3D, where non-uniform meshes should perform especially well.

The cleaning effect of heavy rain (the rainfall reaches 5 mm every day) on surface contamination of insulators is more effective than dew, fog, mist, and other light rain conditions which can initiate leakage currents and increase the likelihood of flashover. It is well understood that heavy rain can wash away contamination from the surface of high voltage (HV) insulators and thereby reduce the risk of pollution flashover. This study examines the cleaning effect of natural wetting conditions on HV insulators on four 500 kV transmission lines in Hunan Province, China. Historical meteorological data, monthly equivalent salt deposit density (ESDD) and non-soluble deposit density (NSDD) measurements taken over a period of five years were analyzed to investigate the relationship between rainfall intensity and insulator cleaning. The measured data show that the ESDD/NSDD changes with the seasonal variation, which accumulates in dry season (January–April, about 117–122 days) and is washed off in the wet season (June–October, about 118–127 days). According to the measured data, the ESDD and NSDD on the surface of insulators were affected by the rainfall intensity (in the dry season it is about 1 mm/day and in the wet season it is about 5 mm/day). Based on a comparison of the four study sites, we propose a mathematical model to show the functional relationship between rainfall intensity and insulator self-cleaning capability. The mathematical model’s coefficient of determination (R2) is greater than 0.9 and the effective rate of self-cleaning capability reaches 80%.

Compared to the effect of the active hydrogen atom in the cation in protic ionic liquids (ILs) on their properties and applications, there are very few reports on the role of the active hydrogen atom in the anion. In order to better understand the role of the active hydrogen atom in the anion, the physical properties, CO2 capture and conversion of three hydantoin-based anion-functionalized ILs ([P4442][Hy], [P4442]2[Hy], and [HDBU][Hy]) have been investigated via experiments, spectroscopy, and DFT calculations in this work. The results show that the active hydrogen atom in the anion can form anionic hydrogen bonding networks, which significantly increase the melting point and viscosity and decrease the basicity of the IL, thereby weakening its ability to capture and convert CO2. Interestingly, [P4442][Hy] undergoes a solid/liquid two-phase transition during CO2 absorption/desorption due to the formation of quasi-intramolecular hydrogen bonding between the active hydrogen atom and the O-atom of the absorbed CO2, suggesting that the presence of the active hydrogen atom gives [P4442][Hy] the potential to be an excellent molecular switch. As there is no active hydrogen atom in the anion of [P4442]2[Hy], it shows excellent CO2 capture and conversion performance through the double-site interaction. [HDBU][Hy] shows the weakest catalytic CO2 conversion due to the presence of active hydrogen atoms on both its anion and cation. Therefore, the active hydrogen atom in the anion may play a more important role in the properties and potential applications of ILs than the active hydrogen atom in the cation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
