This study investigates the perception and usage of reference management tools and referencing styles among faculty members and research scholars in universities across Tamil Nadu, India. The research aims to assess awareness, adoption rates, and preferences for various tools and styles, as well as to identify challenges and impacts on research productivity. Data collected from 250 participants reveal high awareness (90%) and adoption (70%) of reference management tools, with Mendeley emerging as the most popular tool (36%) and APA as the preferred referencing style (36%). The study highlights discipline-specific trends in tool and style preferences, with sciences favoring Mendeley and APA, humanities preferring Zotero and MLA, and social sciences leaning towards EndNote and Harvard. Factors influencing tool choice include user interface (84% agreement) and available features (88% agreement). While 72% of respondents reported positive impacts on research productivity, challenges such as compatibility issues (30%) and lack of institutional support (24%) were identified. Engineering student writers must document their reference sources in their theses, papers. proposals, reports. and related documents that they prepare. This is generally done in Microsoft Word or in a LaTeX software package and typically done in the IEEE citation style which is widely used in engineering and technology. In this work, we identify 25 primary reference types and 21 secondary reference types that are used in present-day engineering writing. Because a1146 of these engineering reference types are typically not available in commercial reference management software. we have generated customization files for the widely used EndNote reference management software package that enable referencing to be done using either Cite-While-You-Write (CWYW) for Word users or using BibTeX for LaTeX users. These customization files and instructions on how to install and use them, herein called the Georgia Tech Engineering Reference Management System (GTERMS), are made available on an open-access free-to-use basis. Bibliographic databases have long been a cornerstone of scientometrics research, and new information sources have prompted several comparative studies between them. Such studies often employ document-level matching procedures to identify overlaps in the corpus of each database and assess their coverage. However, despite being increasingly relevant in comparative studies, such a type of analysis still lacks an open-source tool to automate it. To fill this gap, we have developed an R package called biblioverlap, which implements a hybrid matching approach using a unique identifier and a selection of ubiquitous bibliographic fields to establish document co-occurrence. It supports data analysis from a broad range of secondary sources and can be used for comparing databases and assessing document overlap in virtually any bibliographic dataset, which can be insightful for various research questions. Citation management programs are tools used to organize references and to create citations and bibliographies. Libraries are often the central point for providing training and support in using these tools. To determine how we could improve our support and training services, we surveyed users to determine what software in being used, why they chose that particular program, what features are important, and how they use citation management programs to collaborate. Results indicate that users chose a particular program because it was freely available or recommended to them by others and that they thought that importing references and creating citations were important features. Program objective: To advance the methodology and improve the data management of the scoping review through the integration of two health librarians onto the clinical research team. Participants and setting: Two librarians were embedded on a multidisciplinary, geographically dispersed pediatric palliative and end-of-life research team conducting a scoping review headquartered at the British Columbia Children’s Hospital Research Institute. Program: The team’s embedded librarians guided and facilitated all stages of a scoping review of 180 Q3 conditions and 10 symptoms. Outcomes: The scoping review was enhanced in quality and efficiency through the integration of librarians onto the team. Conclusions: Health librarians embedded on clinical research teams can help guide and facilitate the scoping review process to improve workflow management and overall methodology. Librarians are particularly well equipped to solve challenges arising from large data sets, broad research questions with a high level of specificity, and geographically dispersed team members. Knowledge of emerging and established citation-screening and bibliographic software and review tools can help librarians to address these challenges and provide efficient workflow management.

In this article, the author looks back at his years of research about early cinema and related media in libraries and archives worldwide, and examines the great number of changes that have taken place since about the 1980s in the organisation of such institutions and in research methods. Aspects that are covered include significant transformations in cataloguing, bibliographic software and digitisation of texts. The present work explores the research question: do capstone engineering students perceive that different learning and teaching modes improve their referencing and citation skills? Two different teaching and learning modes of instruction were implemented for demonstration and training on the use of engineering databases and bibliographic information retrieval resources: i.e. small group and large group. A survey was conducted of students’ perception of the mode of instruction in both a large class format and the small-class hands-on environment. Analysis of the survey data yielded an overall positive response from students to the implementation of computerised bibliographic software for both class formats. However, this study found compelling evidence that students highly value the intensive instruction in a small group to assist them in improving their use and understanding of citations in written documentation. Purpose - The purpose of the present paper is to investigate the familiarity and use of reference management software (RMS) by library and information science (LIS) faculties in Iran, and aims to identify the possible factors that lead to the application and choice of this software. Design/methodology/approach - This is a descriptive survey. Data collected by a Web-based questionnaire include both open-ended and multiple-choice questions. The questionnaires were distributed among LIS discussion groups and were sent to the e-mails of LIS faculties. Findings - Results reveal that over half of the respondents had a good familiarity with the various citation software packages and knew how to use them; 35 per cent of respondents have learned how to use these packages through formal education. "Endnote" is the most popular software among respondents. Respondents confirm the need to offer some educational programs on how to use these software packages to bachelor students, and nominated the "Academic Writing" course as the proper place for teaching this topic. Originality/value - If due attention is given to the importance of referencing in academic writing and to establishing criteria for the acceptance of papers for publication, teaching students how to carry out referencing and how to use RMS packages for this purpose will aid the promotion of scientific products. With the growing population of undergraduate students on our campus and an increased focus on their success, librarians at a large midwestern university were interested in the citation management styles of this university cohort. Our university library spends considerable resources each year to maintain and promote access to the robust bibliographic management tool RefWorks. A team of librarians wondered whether RefWorks might be used by undergraduate students with the same perceived enthusiasm that we have sensed in graduate students and faculty. More generally, we explored how undergraduate students were managing their citations, if and what kinds of tools they were using to ease the process of creating bibliographies, and their general workflow in incorporating citations into their academic work. In the last few years, several authors have opined that the multitude of reference styles used in scholarly journals is entirely pointless. In this brief note, a back-of-the- envelope calculation shows that this profusion of styles leads to significant waste of researchers’ time and financial resources, all of which could be spent on far more meaningful pursuits. A simple solution is for all journals to adopt a single reference format. This could happen relatively easily, it is argued, if major funding agencies decided to back the idea. Attribute selection is one of the steps before patent clustering. Various attributes can be used for clustering. In this study, the effect of using citation and citation title words, respectively, in form of bibliographic coupling and citation title words sharing, were measured and compared with each other, as patent attributes. This study was done in an experimental method, on a collection of 717 US Patent cited in the patents belong to 977/774 subclass of US Patent Classification. Fuzzy C-means was used for patent clustering and extended BCubed precision and extended BCubed recall were used as evaluation measure. The results showed that the clustering produced by bibliographic coupling had better performance than clustering used citation title words and existence of cluster structure were in a wider range of exhaustivity than citation title words. Decisions about which software to use are increasingly made by individual public service professionals. This article contextualizes those decisions and their implications within the framework of existing library values such as collaboration, intellectual freedom, and public good. The open-source bibliographic management tool Zotero provides an apt example that clarifies how public service information professionals need to conceptualize their technology decisions. The development model of software has repercussions, both short and long-term, that must be taken into account so that public service information professionals can effectively represent their values and serve their users. This article presents a new open-source software tool, SciMAT, which performs science mapping analysis within a longitudinal framework. It provides different modules that help the analyst to carry out all the steps of the science mapping workflow. The article presents information on the Elm Fork Education Center (EFEC) at the University of North Texas (UNT), which designs and conducts environmental science programs for elementary school students. Biology 1132: Environmental Science at UNT is a high-enrollment, freshman-level course in the Biological Sciences Department at UNT. The UNT Libraries collaborated with an assistant professor on green education to incorporate active learning in future semesters of the Environmental Science course by including environmental science topics, specifically evolution and global warming. The librarian and her graduate assistant used the bibliographic management software RefWorks and its collaborative feature RefShare to collect, organize and share the readings with the professor.

The article traces a day in the life of Professor Rudolph Beck-Dühlmen as he interacts with various electronic communications, including his iPhone, university blogs and e-mail, and his electronically composed article on qualifications for journalism in the daily newspaper. The professor's electronic contact with his book sales figures and his mentions in the Citation Index are reported on, as well as his substitution of e-mail for student office visits and use plagiarism-detecting software.

By writing scientific paper, one gradually starts the academic career. Academic staff members, most often have no choice but to engage in scientific writing to fulfill the requirements for selection or promotion in their academic career. Those who do not find themselves competent enough to write, at times indulge in plagiarism. The present study was conducted to compare writing references for scientific paper manually and by using EndNote software, which is quite helpful for the authors. In this study time consumed in inserting twenty references in a paper mannually was compared with putting references using EndNote software.(version 9) In addition, the format of references was changed in different manners to find out the time required for making these changes. Comparison of time spent for inserting one reference or all references in both formats Vancouver and Harvard showed significant difference (P<0.001). The study showed that persuading the authors to use electronic software for writing references and scientific papers would significantly improve the quality of the manuscripts besides enlarging the scope of medical journalism. Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to expand on previous quantitative and qualitative research into the use of electronic information resources and its impact on the information behaviour of academics at Catalan universities. Design/methodology/approach - A focus group was set up, comprising seven members of the staff of five Catalan academic libraries. Findings - Participants confirmed the increase in the amount of journal reading among academics, due to the increase in the number of electronic journals available and the improvement in the tools for locating and accessing this information, especially off-campus access. Librarians were well aware of the importance of internet search engines as the first information source for academics. They regretted having failed to provide users with a single interface to all information products. Academics' perceptions of the usefulness of bibliographic management software have increased dramatically during the last few years, especially among PhD students. Finally, librarians stated that most of the complaints they receive from users were to do with platform breakdowns, difficulties in accessing resources off-campus, and discontinued resources. Originality/value - While a large number of studies have measured the use of electronic journals and databases and have surveyed users, few studies have involved librarians in order to triangulate these results. A gap in the linking of information literacy skills and bibliographic software usage was identified in the postgraduate researcher cohort. While the provision was available, many researchers were not integrating the finding of research information and the management of that information using bibliographic software tools. This article describes the linking of these two areas in two courses presented to postgraduate researchers and analyses the feedback from those who attended. Overall, an overwhelmingly positive response was found. Most positively received was the software training, perceived as a "new" skill, while information literacy skills were less well received, due mainly to the perception of those skills as already acquired. Personal bibliographic software helps to organize references. These packages can create bibliography and footnotes in combination with popular word processing programs. They also allow direct searching in some data bases and sharing of bibliographic files among research colleagues. However, as search results become more and more numerous, conventional treatment of reference lists presents some difficulties to scientific information users. Along with other applications designed to visualize search results, RefViz is more a data visualization and analysis software than a bibliographic management package. Purpose - The underlying software issue related to cited references is the capability of the software to identify the specific work cited by a reference, and associate it with the correct author and journal. This paper aims to investigate this issue and to discuss the latest editions of Web of Science (WoS) and Scopus. Design/methodology/approach - In this paper the strengths and weaknesses of the Distinct Author Set feature of WoS and the Author Details feature of Scopus are discussed. Nurses, especially those in academia, feel the pressure to publish but have a limited time to write. One of the more time-consuming and frustrating tasks of research, and subsequent publications, is the collection and organization of accurate citations of sources of information. The purpose of this article is to discuss three types of citation reference managers (personal bibliographic software) and how their use can provide consistency and accuracy in recording all the information needed for the research and writing process. In the scholarly environment, research findings are disseminated as journal papers which support/dispute extant knowledge or add further to what is already known. These tools are available as both commercial and open source software, and constitute a database wherein researchers search, store and cite references. Furthermore, authors can not only create personalized databases but also cite stored articles when compiling a manuscript or report or indeed any other form of document.
