The present umbrella review of four systematic reviews with meta-analysis aimed to assess whether clear aligners are associated with better periodontal conditions compared with fixed appliances in patients undergoing orthodontic treatment. The present study protocol was developed in accordance with the PRISMA statement before the literature search, data extraction, and analysis and was registered on PROSPERO (CRD42023401808). The question formulation, search, and study selection strategies were developed according to the PICO model. Systematic reviews with a meta-analysis published in English without date restriction were electronically searched across the Cochrane Library, Web of Science (Core Collection), Scopus, EMBASE, and MEDLINE/PubMed databases until 10 February 2023. An assessment of study quality was performed using the AMSTAR 2 tool. Differences in the PI, GI, and BOP in the short- and medium-term follow-ups, in the PPD in long-term follow-up, and the gingival recessions in the short-term follow-up were found between subjects with clear aligners and fixed appliances, revealing a slight tendency for clear aligners to be associated with healthier periodontal conditions. However, even if statistically significant, such differences would be negligible in a clinical environment. Therefore, the impact of orthodontic treatment with clear aligners and fixed appliances on periodontal health status should be considered comparable.

Various clinical manifestations of SARS-CoV-2 infections and adverse reactions to COVID-19 vaccination have been described in children. The present narrative review aimed to collect and synthesize reported findings on oral lesions detected in SARS-CoV-2-positive subjects following COVID-19 EMA-authorized and WHO Emergency Use Listing-approved vaccine administration in the pediatric population to detail their clinical features and highlight possible pathogenic aspects of those lesions based on current evidence. Few and incomplete reports were retrieved from the literature, probably because most lesions belonged to a broad spectrum of systemic diseases and syndromes and were nonspecific or inaccurately described. The most common oral lesions in pediatric SARS-CoV-2-positive patients were erosive-ulcerative lesions and macules/petechiae, primarily erythematous. In the context of COVID-19 vaccination, oral adverse reactions were rare and typically presented as erosive-ulcerative lesions, with EM-like or unspecified patterns. Future studies should investigate oral lesions in SARS-CoV-2-positive subjects and after COVID-19 vaccination in the pediatric population, taking into account viral variants and newly developed vaccines. Deeper insight into oral lesions detectable in pediatric SARS-CoV-2-positive subjects and after COVID-19 vaccination may increase clinicians' ability to improve multidisciplinary pediatric oral and general care.

Oral commensal microorganisms perform very important functions such as contributing to the health of the host. However, the oral microbiota also plays an important role in the pathogenesis and development of various oral and systemic diseases. The oral microbiome may be characterized by a higher prevalence of some microorganisms than others in subjects with removable or fixed prostheses, depending on oral health conditions, the prosthetic materials used, and any pathological conditions brought about by inadequate prosthetic manufacturing or poor oral hygiene. Both biotic and abiotic surfaces of removable and fixed prostheses can be easily colonized by bacteria, fungi, and viruses, which can become potential pathogens. The oral hygiene of denture wearers is often inadequate, and this can promote oral dysbiosis and the switch of microorganisms from commensal to pathogens. In light of what emerged from this review, fixed and removable dental prostheses on teeth and on implants are subject to bacterial colonization and can contribute to the formation of bacterial plaque. It is of fundamental importance to carry out the daily hygiene procedures of prosthetic products, to design the prosthesis to facilitate the patient's home oral hygiene practices, and to use products against plaque accumulation or capable of reducing oral dysbiosis to improve patients' home oral practices. Therefore, this review primarily aimed to analyze the oral microbiome composition in fixed and removable implant or non-implant-supported prostheses wearers in healthy and pathological oral conditions. Secondly, this review aims to point out related periodontal self-care recommendations for oral dysbiosis prevention and periodontal health maintenance in fixed and removable implant or non-implant-supported prostheses wearers.

Introduction: Ozone is a naturally occurring unstable compound with three oxygen atoms that generally transforms into an oxygen molecule, releasing one oxygen atom. This feature has been exploited in dentistry for numerous applications, including for periodontal diseases and peri-implantitis., Methods: This review was performed in relation to the PRISMA flow chart and was annotated in the PROSPERO register. PICO questions were used as research questions. The risk of bias in the non-randomized clinical trials was appraised using the ROBINS-I tool., Results: An electronic search found a total of 1073 records, in particular, 842 from MEDLINE/PubMed, 13 from Bio Med Central, 160 from Scopus, 1 from the Cochrane library databases, and 57 from the PROSPERO register. A total of 17 studies were included in the present systematic review. Information regarding the characteristics of the periodontal clinical and radiographic parameters for gaseous ozone, ozonate water, ozonate oil, and ozone gel, including clinical attachment loss (CAL) probing depth (PPD), bleeding on probing (BoP), plaque index (PI), gingival index (GI), and marginal bone levels (MBL), were obtained., Conclusions: The studies included in this systematic review show different results regarding the ozone in periodontal treatment in association with or without SRP.

The performance of Koopmans-compliant hybrid functionals in reproducing the electronic structure of organic crystals is tested for a series of acene crystals. The calculated band gaps are found to be consistent with those achieved with the GW method at a fraction of the computational cost and in excellent accord with the experimental results at room temperature, when including the thermal renormalization. The energetics of excess holes and electrons reveals a struggle between polaronic localization and band-like delocalization. The consequences of these results on the transport properties of acene crystals are discussed.

Tin-based metal halide perovskites with a composition of ASnX 3 (where A= MA or FA and X = I or Br) have been investigated by means of X-ray total scattering techniques coupled to pair distribution function (PDF) analysis. These studies revealed that that none of the four perovskites has a cubic symmetry at the local scale and that a degree of increasing distortion is always present, in particular when the cation size is increased, i.e., from MA to FA, and the hardness of the anion is increased, i.e., from Br - to I - . Electronic structure calculations provided good agreement with experimental band gaps for the four perovskites when local dynamical distortions were included in the calculations. The averaged structure obtained from molecular dynamics simulations was consistent with experimental local structures determined via X-ray PDF, thus highlighting the robustness of computational modeling and strengthening the correlation between experimental and computational results.

The COVID-19 pandemic has profoundly changed our lives. Since the SARS-CoV-2 was discovered, many studies have been done on the transmission mode, its replication within humans, and its survival even in the outside environment and on inanimate surfaces. Undoubtedly, health care workers have faced the greatest risks because of their close contact with potentially infected patients. Of these, dental health care professionals are certainly among the most vulnerable categories, precisely because infection occurs with the airborne virus. The treatment of patients within the dental office has changed profoundly, respecting all preventive measures towards the patient and the practitioners themselves. The aim of this paper is to understand whether the protocols changed for the prevention of SARS-CoV-2 infection among dentists remained even after the most acute phase of the pandemic. In particular, this study analyzed habits, protocols, preventive measures, and any costs incurred in the COVID-19 era for the prevention of SARS-CoV-2 infection among dental workers and patients.

The risk of microbial air contamination in a dental setting, especially during aerosol-generating dental procedures (AGDPs), has long been recognized, becoming even more relevant during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, individual pathogens were rarely studied, and microbial loads were measured heterogeneously, often using low-sensitivity methods. Therefore, the present study aimed to assess microbial air contamination in the dental environment, identify the microorganisms involved, and determine their count by active air sampling at the beginning (T0), during (T1), and at the end (T2) of ultrasonic scaling in systemically and periodontally healthy subjects. Air microbial contamination was detected at T0 in all samples, regardless of whether the sample was collected from patients treated first or later; predominantly Gram-positive bacteria, including Staphylococcus and Bacillus spp. and a minority of fungi, were identified. The number of bacterial colonies at T1 was higher, although the species found were similar to that found during the T0 sampling, whereby Gram-positive bacteria, mainly Streptococcus spp., were identified. Air samples collected at T2 showed a decrease in bacterial load compared to the previous sampling. Further research should investigate the levels and patterns of the microbial contamination of air, people, and the environment in dental settings via ultrasonic scaling and other AGDPs and identify the microorganisms involved to perform the procedure- and patient-related risk assessment and provide appropriate recommendations for aerosol infection control.

The present umbrella review aimed to characterize periodontal self-care instructions, prescriptions, and motivational methods; evaluate the associated periodontal outcomes; and provide integrated, evidence-based recommendations for periodontal self-care in periodontally healthy orthodontic patients with fixed appliances. The presently applied study protocol was developed in advance, compliant with the PRISMA statement, and registered on PROSPERO (CRD42022367204). Systematic reviews published in English without date restrictions were electronically searched until 21 November 2022 across the PROSPERO Register and Cochrane Library, Web of Science (Core Collection), Scopus, and MED-LINE/PubMed databases. The study quality assessment was conducted through the AMSTAR 2 tool. Seventeen systematic reviews were included. Powered and manual toothbrushes showed no significant differences in biofilm accumulation, although some evidence revealed significant improvements in inflammatory, bleeding, and periodontal pocket depth values in the short term with powered toothbrushes. Chlorhexidine mouthwashes, but no gels, varnishes, or pastes, controlled better biofilm accumulation and gingival inflammation as adjuncts to toothbrushing, although only for a limited period. Organic products, such as aloe vera and chamomile, proved their antimicrobial properties, and herbal-based mouthwashes seemed comparable to CHX without its side effects. Motivational methods also showed beneficial effects on periodontal biofilm control and inflammation, while no evidence supported probiotics administration.

There is increasing interest in the role of metal halide perovskites for heterogeneous catalysis. Here, we report a Ge-based 2D perovskite material that shows intrinsic water stability realized through organic cation engineering. Incorporating 4-phenylbenzilammonium (PhBz) we demonstrate, by means of extended experimental and computational results, that PhBz 2 GeBr 4 and PhBz 2 GeI 4 can achieve relevant air and water stability. The mechanism of toluene nitration by NO 2 BF 4 in dichloromethane solution is investigated by performing advanced ab initio MD simulations of the reaction trajectories, including at full quantum mechanical level the effects of both the solvent and of the counterion. The time evolution of the encounter complex, as well as that of the associated electronic structure, for different trajectories reveals that a single electron transfer step fastly occurs after reactants are accommodated in a common solvation shell, always preceding the formation of the σ-complex. The present results strongly suggest that the regioselectivity of the reaction is spin-density driven and that a thin mechanism, one based on reaction intermediates and transition states, can be appropriate to describe aromatic nitration.

The present umbrella review aimed to characterize the type and regimen of antibiotics administered locally and/or systemically, alone or in combination with surgical and nonsurgical treatments, for peri-implantitis and to evaluate and compare the associated clinical, radiographic, and crevicular peri-implant outcomes. The secondary objective was to determine the most effective antibiotic type, route of administration, regimen, and protocols (antibiotics alone or in combination with other approaches) for treating peri-implantitis. The study protocol, which was developed in advance under the PRISMA statement, was registered at PROSPERO (CRD42022373957). BioMed Central, Scopus, MEDLINE/PubMed, the Cochrane Library databases, and the PROSPERO registry were searched for systematic reviews through 15 November 2022. Of the 708 records found, seven reviews were included; three were judged of a critically low and four of low quality through the AMSTAR 2 tool. Locally administered antibiotics alone or as an adjunct to surgical or nonsurgical treatments for peri-implantitis showed favorable outcomes, albeit with limited evidence. The administration of systemically-delivered antibiotics in combination with nonsurgical or surgical treatments remained questionable. Local plus systemic antibiotics have not been shown to have durable efficacy. Due to the heterogeneity of reported antibiotic types, routes, regimens, and protocols, no definitive conclusions could be drawn regarding the most effective antibiotic use in treating peri-implantitis.

The technique of intentional replantation can provide a second chance to save teeth that would be destined for extraction. Therefore, the present systematic review aimed primarily to estimate tooth survival after intentional replantation and secondarily to compare treatment outcomes in single-rooted and multi-rooted teeth. The study protocol was developed before the analysis according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses guidelines. Articles were electronically searched in PubMed/MEDLINE, the COCHRANE library and Google Scholar by two independent reviewers, and those that met the eligibility criteria were included. A statistical analysis using the chi-square test with a p-value of <0.05 was performed on the reported outcomes of intentional replantation. A total of 44 single-rooted replanted teeth with five failures (11.36%) and 42 multi-rooted replanted teeth with six failures (14.28%) were reported in the literature, corresponding to a survival rate of 88.64% and 85.57%, respectively. The overall survival rate for the replantation procedure was 86.7%, indicating that intentional replantation can be considered a safe therapeutic choice, with no statistically significant difference between the survival rates of single-rooted and multi-rooted replanted teeth.

Periodontitis and peri-implantitis are microbially associated diseases of the tissues supporting the teeth and dental implants that are mediated by host inflammation and eventually lead to tooth and dental implant loss. Given the probiotics' role in biofilm control, dysbiosis reversal, and host modulation, their potential beneficial effects on the improvement of periodontitis and peri-implantitis have been recently investigated. Moreover, probiotics use has also been proposed in periodontal health management in patients undergoing fixed orthodontic therapy. Therefore, the present study aimed to review, considering the periodontal microbiome composition around teeth and dental implants in healthy and pathological conditions, the putative favorable effects of probiotics on gingivitis, periodontitis, and peri-implantitis. The secondary aim of the present narrative review was to synthesize the supporting evidence and proposed protocols for probiotics use as adjuncts in periodontitis and peri-implantitis treatment and the periodontal health management of orthodontic patients with fixed appliances. Contrasting findings from the literature may be due to the different methods, posology, and duration of probiotics prescriptions and due to the heterogeneous biological and clinical measurement methods employed. Thus, no definitive conclusions could be drawn about the effectiveness of probiotics in periodontal management, both in healthy and pathological conditions. Further studies are needed to validate probiotics for periodontal management and provide recommended protocols.

The prevalence of background hole doping in tin halide perovskites usually dominates their recombination dynamics. The addition of excess Sn halide source to the precursor solution is the most frequently used approach to reduce the hole doping and reveals photo-carrier dynamics related to defects activity. This study presents an experimental and theoretical investigation on defects under light irradiation in tin halide perovskites by combining measurements of photoluminescence with first principles computational modeling. It finds that tin perovskite thin films prepared with an excess of Sn halide sources exhibit an enhancement of the photoluminescence intensity over time under continuous excitation in inert atmosphere. The authors propose a model in which light irradiation promotes the annihilation of V Sn 2- /Sn i 2+ Frenkel pairs, reducing the deep carrier trapping centers associated with such defect and increasing the radiative recombination. Importantly, these observations can be traced in the open-circuit voltage dynamics of tin-based halide perovskite solar cells, implying the relevance of controlling the Sn photochemistry to stabilize tin perovskite devices., (© 2022 The Authors. Since smoking is considered among the main risk factors for the onset and progression of periodontitis and peri-implantitis, the present systematic review aimed to evaluate the effect of smoking cessation on clinical, radiographic, and gingival crevicular periodontal parameters around natural teeth and dental implants in ex-smokers compared to current and non-smokers. The study protocol was developed based on the PRISMA guidelines, the research question was formulated according to the PICO model, and the literature search was conducted through PubMed/MEDLINE, Cochrane library, and BioMed Central databases. From the 916 title/abstracts initially identified, seven articles were included in the present systematic review and assessed for quality through the ROBINS-I tool. Reported findings on clinical and crevicular periodontal parameters around natural teeth were contrasting when comparing ex-smokers to current and non-smokers; thus, individualized recommendations for previous smoker periodontal patients are currently lacking. No data on radiographic parameters were retrieved. Similarly, data on periodontal parameters around dental implants were not available, highlighting the need for focused investigations assessing the role of both smoking habit and cessation on peri-implant health status and responsiveness to treatment.

Since non-adherence to antibiotic therapy can cause several problems, including antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and treatment failures, the present study evaluated adherence to oral antibiotic therapy and AMR awareness among consecutively enrolled dental patients. Data concerning age, gender, socioeconomic status, education level, cohabitation, and general health were retrieved from medical records. AMR awareness was investigated through direct questions and adherence to antibiotic treatment was assessed through a modified Italian version of the Morisky medical scale-8 items. Participants’ characteristics were analyzed in relation to treatment adherence and AMR, using a Χ2 independence test (significance level of α <0.1). Dental patients generally showed a low (51.82%) adherence to oral antibiotic therapy, and medium and high adherence was reported only by 29.37% and 18.81% of participants. Treatment adherence was similar in relation to participants’ gender and age but significantly lower in subjects with only secondary school graduation and higher in participants with higher education levels. Non-cohabitants were significantly more adherent than cohabitants. AMR awareness was declared by 42.15% of males and 38.70% of females: 56.52% of dental patients aware of AMR were 18−38 years old, 35.20% were 39−59 years old, and 26.95% were aged between 60 and 80. Further studies are needed to develop adequate strategies, expanding dental patients’ knowledge of AMR, thus optimizing the benefits and reducing the risks of antibiotic administration in dental patients.

Metal halide perovskites (MHPs) are solution-processed materials with exceptional photoconversion efficiencies that have brought a paradigm shift in photovoltaics. The nature of the peculiar optoelectronic properties underlying such astounding performance is still controversial. The existence of ferroelectricity in MHPs and its alleged impact on photovoltaic activity have fueled an intense debate, in which unanimous consensus is still far from being reached. Here we critically review recent experimental and theoretical results with a two-fold objective: we argue that the occurrence of ferroelectric domains is incompatible with the A-site cation dynamics in MHPs and propose an alternative interpretation of the experiments based on the concept of ferroelasticity. We further underline that ferroic behavior in MHPs would not be relevant at room temperature or higher for the physics of photogenerated charge carriers, since it would be overshadowed by competing effects like polaron formation and ion migration.

Antimicrobial resistance is a growing phenomenon, often associated with the improper prescription of antibiotics, prescribed by those who do not follow the guidelines for antibiotic stewardship. The aim of this study was to evaluate the current attitude towards antibiotic prescribing and antimicrobial resistance awareness among Italian dentists. An online questionnaire was distributed to Italian dentists from September to December 2021. The questionnaire was composed of three main sections. The first part was focused on demographic characteristics, the second part on prescription habits, and the third part on the dentists’ knowledge regarding the phenomenon of antimicrobial resistance. A chi-square test was used to find associations between different variables. The level of significance was set at p < 0.05. A total of 382 dentists completed the questionnaire. The main reasons for antibiotic prescribing were for abscesses (39.6%), extractions (24.5%), and pulpitis (14.1%). The majority of participants (85.3%) reported prescribing macrolides in the case of a penicillin allergy. Most dentists (98.9%) were aware of the antimicrobial resistance phenomenon, but only 7.4% of them consulted the guidelines for prescribing antibiotics. This study demonstrates that the same trend exists in Italy as in other countries in terms of the high prevalence of misuse and overuse of antibiotics, and that Italian dentists utilize a range of antibiotic management strategies.

Increasing evidence relate anti-SARS-CoV-2 vaccinations to orofacial adverse reactions, therefore, the present systematic review aimed to evaluate primary oral lesions diagnosed in adult subjects, following the WHO Emergency Use Listing approved and EMA authorized vaccines, also in relation to cases' age, gender, comorbidities, and history of COVID-19, and in relation to vaccine type and doses. The study protocol, registered on PROSPERO (CRD42022339032) and compliant with the PRISMA statement, included an electronic search across Scopus, MEDLINE/PubMed, BioMed Central databases, and PROSPERO, ended on 18 June 2022 and succeeded by a manual search, an independent data extraction, and arisk of bias evaluation through ROBINS-I tool. Qualitatively synthesized data from the 13studies included showed an overall low prevalence (16 cases), though higher in females (68.8%), of oral lesions, mainly erosions and ulcers (34.5%). Nine cases were diagnosed following Pfizer-BioNTech, two Moderna, and one AstraZeneca, Serum Institute of India, Sinopharm, and Johnson&Johnson vaccines, respectively; specifically, eight after the first dose and seven after the second. In one case, vaccine type and dose were not specified. Considering newly developing vaccines, presented findings may be updated and further studies needed to highlight factors affecting oral lesion occurrence and specific macro-microscopic phenotypes in relation to cases' and vaccines' characteristics.

The aim of the present systematic review was to evaluate and possibly differentiate the effects of traditional cigarettes, heat-not-burn tobacco, and electronic cigarettes on periodontal and peri-implant health status. Electronic cigarettes and heat-not-burn tobacco have become very popular in recent years and have been proposed to consumers as a safer alternative to conventional tobacco smoke, although their effect on periodontal and peri-implant health remains unclear. The study protocol was developed according to PRISMA guidelines, and the focus question was formulated according to the PICO strategy. A literature search was conducted across PubMed/MEDLINE and the COCHRANE library from 2003 to April 2022. From the 1935 titles initially identified, 18 articles were finally included in the study and extracted data were qualitatively synthesized. It may be carefully concluded that e-cigarettes may cause attenuated clinical inflammatory signs of periodontitis and, hypothetically, of peri-implantitis when compared to conventional tobacco smoke. Both alternative smoking products, containing nicotine, may likewise exert negative effects on periodontal and peri-implant health, as demonstrated by in vitro studies. Further investigations are needed to assess the impact of electronic cigarettes and heat-not-burn tobacco products on periodontal and peri-implant health status.

Tin halide perovskites have recently emerged as promising materials for low band gap solar cells. Much effort has been invested on controlling the limiting factors responsible for poor device efficiencies, namely self-p-doping and tin oxidation. Both phenomena are related to the presence of defects; however, full understanding of their implications in the optoelectronic properties of the material is still missing. We provide a comprehensive picture of the competing radiative and non-radiative recombination processes in tin-based perovskite thin films to establish the interplay between doping and trapping by combining photoluminescence measurements with trapped-carrier dynamic simulations and first-principles calculations. We show that pristine Sn perovskites, i.e. sample processed with commercially available SnI 2 used as received, exhibit extremely high radiative efficiency due to electronic doping which boosts the radiative band-to-band recombination. Contrarily, thin films where Sn 4+ species are intentionally introduced show drastically reduced radiative lifetime and efficiency due to a dominance of Auger recombination at all excitation densities when the material is highly doped. The introduction of SnF 2 reduces the doping and passivates Sn 4+ trap states but conversely introduces additional non-radiative decay channels in the bulk that fundamentally limit the radiative efficiency. Overall, we provide a qualitative model that takes into account different types of traps present in tin-perovskite thin films and show how doping and defects can affect the optoelectronic properties.

Besides the well-known systemic factors for periodontal and peri-implant diseases, additional co-factors, such as chronic stress and depression, may also affect disease onset and progression as well as treatment responsiveness. Neurobiological and neurobehavioral pathogenic links between chronic stress and depression, on the one side, and periodontitis and peri-implantitis, on the other side, which have been little investigated and principally related to necrotizing periodontal disease, have been reviewed, along with their putative interconnections with periodontal immune-microbiome balance. Rising evidence suggest that dysregulated neurobiological and neurobehavioral factors, as well as periodontal immune-microbiome unbalance, all related to chronic stress and depression, may crucially interact and thus represent contributing factors in the genesis and worsening not only of necrotizing periodontal lesions, but also of chronic periodontitis and peri-implantitis. Such potential interconnections may be even more relevant in recurrent and aggressive cases of periodontal and peri-implant disease, which are frequently refractory to therapy, and may, if corroborated, coherently pave the way for personalized prevention and treatment strategies, possibly targeting immune-microbiome unbalance and neurobehavioral factors and focusing on neurobiological ones, especially in chronically stressed and depressed subjects with periodontitis and peri-implantitis.

Tin-halide perovskites (THPs) have emerged as promising lead-free perovskites for photovoltaics and photocatalysis applications but still fall short in terms of stability and efficiency with respect to their lead-based counterpart. A detailed understanding of the degradation mechanism of THPs in a water environment is missing. This Letter presents ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations to unravel atomistic details of THP/water interfaces comparing methylammonium tin iodide, MASnI 3 , with the lead-based MAPbI 3 . Our results reveal facile solvation of surface tin-iodine bonds in MASnI 3 , while MAPbI 3 remains more robust to degradation despite a larger amount of adsorbed water molecules. Additional AIMD simulations on dimethylammonium tin bromide, DMASnBr 3 , investigate the origins of their unprecedented water stability. Our results indicate the presence of amorphous surface layers of hydrated zero-dimensional SnBr 3 complexes which may protect the inner structure from degradation and explain their success as photocatalysts. We believe that the atomistic details of the mechanisms affecting THP (in-)stability may inspire new strategies to stabilize THPs.

Hyperlipidemia is a well-recognized risk factor for cardiovascular disease, which, in turn, acts as a contributory factor in periodontitis development. Periodontitis has been associated with benign tumors and cancers and withseveral disorders, including hyperlipidemia. Correspondingly, periodontal treatment may exert a positive effect on lipid metabolism, although opposite evidence has also been reported. As a counterpart, the therapy for hyperlipidemia, conventionally based on statins, has been proposed to positively affect periodontal conditions, mainly due to statin pleiotropic effects, reducing periodontal inflammation and promoting osseointegration. Therefore, the present systematic review aimed to evaluate, in subjects with untreated periodontitis and peri-implant disease (Population), the effect of routine systemically administered statins (Intervention), compared to non-statin use (Comparison), on periodontal parameters around natural teeth and implants (Outcome). Discordant results were found in periodontal parameters, and the current lack of such data related to peri-implant tissues and to alveolar bone loss highlights the need for further studies on the topic, potentially paving the way for a more comprehensive approach to periodontitis and peri-implantitis management. Indeed, the validation of the beneficial effect provided by systemically delivered statins on periodontal and peri-implant tissues may direct recall scheduling, predict response to therapy and, therefore, guide treatment strategies of periodontal and peri-implant treatments in statin users.

Tin halide perovskites (THPs) have been established as a lower-toxicity alternative to lead halide perovskites. In spite of the increasing interest, the behavior of photoexcited charges has not been well understood in this class of materials. We here investigate the behavior of excess electrons in a series of tin halide perovskites by employing advanced electronic-structure calculations. We first focus on CsSnBr 3 and show that electron localization is favorable in this compound and that bipolaronic states are the most stable form of self-trapped electrons. We then extend the analysis to CsSnI 3 , CsSnCl 3 , MASnBr 3 , FASnBr 3 , and DMASnBr 3 and show that electron bipolarons are stable in all these compounds, thus indicating that strong electron localization is recurrent in THPs.

Background: Chronic low back pain (CLBP) is a highly prevalent and disabling condition in the elderly, and yet it is undertreated and understudied in this patient population. Tapentadol is a central analgesic with an improved tolerability profile that may be particularly beneficial to the elderly CLBP., Methods: We performed an observational retrospective study to comparatively assess the efficacy and tolerability of tapentadol in young and elderly patients with severe CLBP. Sixtyfive young patients (< 65 years) and 87 elderly patients (≥ 65 years) were titrated on tapentadol extended release to their optimal dose (25-250 mg bid) over 1 month and, then, maintained at that dose for 3 months. The primary endpoint were changes from baseline in 24-h pain intensity on a 0-10 Numerical Rating Scale (NRS) at month-4 of treatment (titration plus maintenance periods). Patients were assessed for several efficacy and tolerability outcomes using a battery of scales and tests for neuropathic pain intensity, quality of life and sleep, and cognitive and gastrointestinal functions., Results: At pretreatment, young and elderly patients had similar pain intensities with younger patients presenting with more intense depressive and neuropathic pain symptoms, and lesser comorbidities and durations of pain (P < 0.05). Thirty-eight patients discontinued treatment because of adverse events occurring mostly during titration. Treatment with tapentadol was associated with comparable and clinically meaningful pain reductions in 24-h NRS from baseline to treatment month-4 both in young and elderly patients (- 5.3 ± 1.4 and - 4.8 ± 2.1; P < 0.01); a 50% pain relief was achieved in 66% and 58% of young and elderly patients. The percentage of patients with a neuropathic component decreased similarly in young and elderly patients (from 38 to 0% and from 19 to 3%; P < 0.01). Quality of life and sleep improved. The performances in global cognition and sustained attention tasks remained stable or improved across all age group., Conclusions: These findings indicate that tapentadol extended release maintains efficacy and good tolerability in CLBP patients with advancing age.

The complications of enteral nutrition in medical wards., Introduction: The effects of Enteral Nutrition (EN) in patients unable to feed themselves have been widely explored although studies in low-/mean- intensity words are lacking., Aim: To measure the prevalence of EN side effects in medical wards and to explore their risk factors. Metodi. Observational, retrospective study on matched patients. All patients in the medical departments of the Azienda Ospedaliero-Universitaria Senese were enrolled (81 cases and 162 controls) from 1 August 2018 to 1 September 2019, aged over 50 years and hospitalized for longer than 4 days. The NE side effects such as diarrhea, vomiting, gastric stagnation and abdominal pain were collected from clinical records The presence of EN, age of patients, mobilization and use of antibiotics during hospitalization were considered risk factors., Results: The prevalence of diarrhea, vomiting, gastric and abdominal pain ranged from 4.9% to 11.1%. The EN was not a significant risk factor for the onset of gastrointestinal disorders, and these complications were always lower than in the controls. Vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain were more frequently, though not significantly, associated to antibiotic treatments; the age of subjects significantly predicted the diarrhea, showing a protective effect with the age increase., Conclusions: The study shows a low prevalence of diarrhoea, vomiting and abdominal pain compared to the literature. These symptoms were not significantly associated to the EN, that cannot be considered a risk factor.

Water-stable metal halide perovskites could foster tremendous progresses in several research fields where their superior optical properties can make differences. In this work we report clear evidence of water stability in a lead-free metal halide perovskite, namely DMASnBr 3 , obtained by means of diffraction, optical and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Such unprecedented water-stability has been applied to promote photocatalysis in aqueous medium, in particular by devising a novel composite material by coupling DMASnBr 3 to g-C 3 N 4 , taking advantage from the combination of their optimal photophysical properties. The prepared composites provide an impressive hydrogen evolution rate >1700 μmol g -1  h -1 generated by the synergistic activity of the two composite costituents. DFT calculations provide insight into this enhancement deriving it from the favorable alignment of interfacial energy levels of DMASnBr 3 and g-C 3 N 4 . The demonstration of an efficient photocatalytic activity for a composite based on lead-free metal halide perovskite in water paves the way to a new class of light-driven catalysts working in aqueous environments., (© 2020 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

Water is generally considered an enemy of metal halide perovskites, being responsible for their rapid degradation and, consequently, undermining the long-term stability of perovskite-based solar cells. However, beneficial effects of liquid water have been surprisingly observed, and synthetic routes including water treatments have shown to improve the quality of perovskite films. This suggests that the interactions of water with perovskites and their precursors are far from being completely understood, as water appears to play a puzzling dual role in perovskite precursor solutions. In this context, studying the basic interactions between perovskite precursors in the aqueous environment can provide a deeper comprehension of this conundrum. In this context, it is fundamental to understand how water impacts the chemistry of iodoplumbate perovskite precursor species, PbI x 2- x . Here, we investigate the chemistry of these complexes using a combined experimental and theoretical strategy to unveil their peculiar structural and optical properties and eventually to assign the species present in the solution. Our study indicates that iodide-rich iodoplumbates, which are generally key to the formation of lead halide perovskites, are not easily formed in aqueous solutions because of the competition between iodide and solvent molecules in coordinating Pb 2+ ions, explaining the difficulty of depositing lead iodide perovskites from aqueous solutions. We postulate that the beneficial effect of water when used as an additive is then motivated by its behavior being similar to high coordinative polar aprotic solvents usually employed as additives in one-step perovskite depositions.

We present a study of hole bipolarons in BiVO 4 . We show that in the presence of two holes O-O dimers are formed, leading to strong charge trapping. While the formation of bipolarons in bulk BiVO 4 requires overcoming a kinetic barrier, we find that these defects should be spontaneously formed at the surface of the material and its interface with water. Through molecular dynamics simulations, we study the effect of bipolarons on the water-splitting reaction and show that their presence may be especially beneficial in alkaline conditions.

A transient state of the excess electron in liquid water preceding the development of the solvation shell, the so-called wet electron, has been invoked to explain spectroscopic observations, but its binding energy and atomic structure have remained highly elusive. Here, we carry out hybrid functional molecular dynamics to unveil the ultrafast solvation mechanism leading to the hydrated electron. In the pre-hydrated regime, the electron is found to repeatedly switch between a quasi-free electron state in the conduction band and a localized state with a binding energy of 0.26 eV, which we assign to the wet electron. This transient state self-traps in a region of the liquid which extends up to ∼4.5 Å and involves a severe disruption of the hydrogen-bond network. Our picture provides an unprecedented view on the nature of the wet electron, which is instrumental to understanding the properties of this fundamental species in liquid water., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry 2019.)

We present a theoretical formulation for studying the pH-dependent interfacial coverage of semiconductor-water interfaces through ab initio electronic structure calculations, molecular dynamics simulations, and the thermodynamic integration method. This general methodology allows one to calculate the acidity of the individual adsorption sites on the surface and consequently the pH at the point of zero charge, pH PZC , and the preferential adsorption mode of water molecules, either molecular or dissociative, at the semiconductor-water interface. The proposed method is applied to study the BiVO 4 (010)-water interface, yields a pH PZC in excellent agreement with the experimental characterization. Furthermore, from the calculated p K a values of the individual adsorption sites, we construct an ab initio concentration diagram of all adsorbed species at the interface as a function of the pH of the aqueous solution. The diagram clearly illustrates the pH-dependent coverage of the surface and indicates that protons are found to be significantly adsorbed (∼1% of available sites) only in highly acidic conditions. The surface is found to be mostly covered by molecularly adsorbed water molecules in a wide interval of pH values ranging from 2 to 8. Hydroxyl ions are identified as the dominant adsorbed species at pH larger than 8.2.

Health professionals are subject to a high risk of burnout syndrome due to specific stressful factors connected with their professional activity. This condition, which influences their quality of life, is characterized by physical and mental fatigue, a detached and apathetic attitude in social relations and feelings of frustration. The purpose of this study was to analyze, among a sample of 40 health professionals in a hospital in southern Italy, the relation between subjective feelings of satisfaction deriving from their professional activities and risk factors associated with burnout (age, sex, marital status, professional category, length of service in the health sector) . Participants were administered a questionnaire and tested by using the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) X1 and X2, and the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) scales. Mean age of participating subjects was 41 years (range 27-59), 52% were male, and 65% were married. Nurses, midwives, social workers and technicians reported a greater degree of anxiety with respect to physicians and psychologists. Younger professionals (ages 30-38), males, unmarried subjects, and those with less years of work experience were found to be at greatest risk for burnout. Results are in agreement with those reported in the literature.
