Abstract

Abstract: We present pest, a novel approach to the approximate querying of graph-structured data such as RDF that exploits the data''s structure to propagate term weights between related data items. We focus on data where meaningful answers are given through the application semantics, e.g., pages in wikis, persons in social networks, or papers in a research network such as Mendeley. The pest matrix generalizes the Google Matrix used in PageRank with a term-weight dependent leap and accommodates different levels of (semantic) closeness for different relations in the data, e.g., friend vs. co-worker in a social network. Its eigenvectors represent the distribution of a term after propagation. The eigenvectors for all terms together form a (vector space) index that takes the structure of the data into account and can be used with standard document retrieval techniques. In extensive experiments including a user study on a real life wiki, we show how pest improves the quality of the ranking over a range of existing ranking approaches, yet achieves a query performance comparable to a plain vector space index. Abstract

This article reports on the XML retrieval system x2 that has been developed at the University of Munich over the last 5 years. In a typical session with x2, the user first browses a structural summary of the XML database in order to select interesting elements and keywords occurring in documents. Using this intermediate result, queries combining structure and textual references are composed semiautomatically. After query evaluation, the full set of answers is presented in a visual and structured way. x2 largely exploits the structure found in documents, queries and answers to enable new interactive visualization and exploration techniques that support mixed IR and database-oriented querying, thus bridging the gap between these three views on the data to be retrieved. Another salient characteristic of x2 that distinguishes it from other visual query systems for XML is that it supports various degrees of detailedness in the presentation of answers, as well as techniques for dynamically reordering, grouping and ranking retrieved elements once the complete answer set has been computed. Abstract

The increase of online communication has been accompanied by several problems. Lies and fake news spread easily - even during disasters - and people find it difficult to assess each other's trust and competence. To counter these issues we conceptualized, designed, and investigated a Contributive Social Capital (CSC) system. It is based on network analysis, a novel modelling with market systems, and certifications. Several experiments indicate that it can create transparency regarding a user's CSC and can thereby counter the issues. Die steigende Anzahl von Online Kommunikation brachte auch Probleme mit sich. Unwahrheiten und "Fake News" verbreiten sich schnell und selbst während Katastrophen und Menschen haben Probleme Vertrauenswürdigkeit und Kompetenz zu erkennen. Um diese Probleme zu beheben wurde in dieser Arbeit ein "Contributive Social Capital" (CSC) System untersucht, das Netzwerkanalyse, Marktmodellierung, und Zertifikate beinhaltet. Diverse Experimente deuten darauf hin, dass sich damit das CSC eines Nutzers darstellen lässt um die Probleme anzugehen.
