The precise detection of the toxic gas H 2 S requires reliable sensitivity and specificity of sensors even at minute concentrations of as low as 10 ppm, the value corresponding to typical exposure limits. CuO can be used for H 2 S dosimetry, based on the formation of conductive CuS and the concomitant significant increase in conductance. In theory, at elevated temperature the reaction is reversed and CuO is formed, ideally enabling repeated and long-term use of one sensor. Yet, the performance of CuO tends to drop upon cycling. Utilizing defined CuO nanorods we thoroughly elucidated the associated detrimental chemical changes directly on the sensors, by Raman and electron microscopy analysis of each step during sensing (CuO→CuS) and regeneration (CuS→CuO) cycles. We find the decrease in the sensing performance is mainly caused by the irreversible formation of CuSO 4 during regeneration. The findings allowed us to develop strategies to reduce CuSO 4 formation and thus to substantially maintain the sensing stability even for repeated cycles. We achieved CuO-based dosimeters possessing a response time of a few minutes only, even for 10 ppm H 2 S, and prolonged life-time., (© 2021 The Authors. Sulfur particles with a conductive polymer coating of poly(3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene) "PEDOT" were prepared by dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma technology under atmospheric conditions (low temperature, ambient pressure). We report a solvent-free, low-cost, low-energy-consumption, safe, and low-risk process to make the material development and production compatible for sustainable technologies. Different coating protocols were developed to produce PEDOT-coated sulfur powders with electrical conductivity in the range of 10 -8 -10 -5 S/cm. The raw sulfur powder (used as the reference) and (low-, optimum-, high-) PEDOT-coated sulfur powders were used to assemble lithium-sulfur (Li-S) cells with a high sulfur loading of ∼4.5 mg/cm 2 . Long-term galvanostatic cycling at C/10 for 100 cycles showed that the capacity fade was mitigated by ∼30% for the cells containing the optimum-PEDOT-coated sulfur in comparison to the reference Li-S cells with raw sulfur. Rate capability, cyclic voltammetry, and electrochemical impedance analyzes confirmed the improved behavior of the PEDOT-coated sulfur as an active material for lithium-sulfur batteries. The Li-S cells containing optimum-PEDOT-coated sulfur showed the highest reproducibility of their electrochemical properties. A wide variety of bulk and surface characterization methods including conductivity analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and NMR spectroscopy were used to explain the chemical features and the superior behavior of Li-S cells using the optimum-PEDOT-coated sulfur material. Moreover, postmortem [SEM and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET)] analyzes of uncoated and coated samples allowed us to exclude any significant effect at the electrode scale even after 70 cycles.

The design of nanoporous perovskite oxides is considered an efficient strategy to develop performing, sustainable catalysts for the conversion of methane. The dependency of nanoporosity on the oxygen defect chemistry and the catalytic activity of perovskite oxides toward CH 4 and CO oxidation was studied here. A novel colloidal synthesis route for nanoporous, high-temperature stable SrTi 0.65 Fe 0.35 O 3-δ with specific surface areas (SSA) ranging from 45 to 80 m 2 /g and pore sizes from 10 to 100 nm was developed. High-temperature investigations by in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD) and TG-MS combined with H 2 -TPR and Mössbauer spectroscopy showed that the porosity improved the release of surface oxygen and the oxygen diffusion, whereas the release of lattice oxygen depended more on the state of the iron species and strain effects in the materials. Regarding catalysis, light-off tests showed that low-temperature CO oxidation significantly benefitted from the enhancement of the SSA, whereas high-temperature CH 4 oxidation is influenced more by the dioxygen release. During isothermal long-term catalysis tests, however, the continuous oxygen release from large SSA materials promoted both CO and CH 4 conversion. Hence, if SSA maximization turned out to efficiently improve low-temperature and long-term catalysis applications, the role of both reducible metal center concentration and crystal structure cannot be completely ignored, as they also contribute to the perovskite oxygen release properties.

The biorecognition-based control of attachment/detachment of MCF-7 cancer cells from polymer-coated surfaces is demonstrated. A glass surface is coated with a thermoresponsive statistical copolymer of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-acrylamide) [p(NIPAm-co-Am)], which is end-capped with the Gly-Arg-Gly-Asp-Ser (GRGDS) peptide, and the hydrophilic polymer poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG). Below the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of p(NIPAm-co-Am) (38 °C), the copolymers are in the extended conformation, allowing for accessibility of the GRGDS peptides to membrane-associated integrins thus enabling cell attachment. Above the LCST, the p(NIPAm-co-Am) polymers collapse into globular conformations, resulting in the shielding of the GRGDS peptides into the PEG brush with consequent inaccessibility to cell-surface integrins, causing cell detachment. The surface coating is carried out by a multi-step procedure that included: glass surface amination with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane; reaction of mPEG 5kDa -N-hydroxysuccinimide (NHS) and p(NIPam-co-Am) 15.1kDa -bis-NHS with the surface aminopropyl groups and conjugation of GRGDS to the carboxylic acid termini of p(NIPam-co-Am) 15.1kDa -COOH. A range of spectrophotometric, surface, and microscopy assays confirmed the identity of the polymer-coated substrates. Competition studies prove that MCF-7 cancer cells are attached via peptide recognition at the coated surfaces according to the mPEG 5kDa /p(NIPam-co-Am) 15.1kDa -GRGDS molar ratio. The room-temperature controlled crystallization of monodispersed ZnS nanoparticles (average size of 5 nm) doped with luminescent ions (such as Mn 2+ , Eu 3+ , Sm 3+ , Nd 3+ , and Yb 3+ ) was achieved via a microfluidic approach. The preparation did not require any stabilizing ligands or surfactants, minimizing potential sources of impurities. The synthesized nanomaterials were characterized from a structural (XRD and XAS at lanthanide L 3 edges), morphological (TEM), and compositional (XPS, ICP-MS) perspective, giving complementary information on the materials' features. In view of potential applications in the field of optical bioimaging, the optical emission properties of the doped nanoparticles were assessed, and samples showed strong luminescent properties while being less affected by self-quenching mechanisms. Furthermore, in vitro cytotoxicity experiments were conducted, showing no negative effects and evidencing the appeal of the synthesized materials for potential applications in the field of optical bioimaging.

Monophasic nano-crystalline CoFe 2 O 4 (CFO) nanoparticles of high purity have been synthesised through a low temperature hydrothermal route, which does not involve hazardous chemicals, or conditions. The easy, green procedure involves a hydrothermal treatment at 135 °C of an aqueous suspension of the oxalate salts of the precursors. No further purification or annealing procedure was necessary to obtain the crystalline nano-structured oxide. The nanoparticles were characterized structurally and chemically by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), Inductively Coupled Plasma Spectrometry (ICP-MS) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), thus confirming the successful synthesis of the CoFe 2 O 4 particles with the expected crystal phase and stoichiometry and an almost complete inverse spinel structure. From the nanoparticles pellets were pressed to investigate the electronic conduction properties using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). At low temperatures, the conductivity measurements reveal a semiconducting behavior originating from hopping between Co sites and a total conductivity dominated by the grain boundary contribution. At higher temperatures ( T > 400 °C) a metallic-insulator transition occurs, which is attributed to additional hopping of electrons between the Fe sites., Competing Interests: There are no conflicts to declare., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry.)

ZnS nanosystems are being extensively studied for their possible use in a wide range of technological applications. Recently, the gradual oxidation of ZnS to ZnO was exploited to tune their structural, electronic, and functional properties. However, the inherent complexity and size dependence of the ZnS oxidation phenomena resulted in a very fragmented description of the process. In this work, different-sized nanosystems were obtained through two different low temperature wet chemistry routes, namely, hydrothermal and inverse miniemulsion approaches. These protocols were used to obtain ZnS samples consisting of 21 and 7 nm crystallites, respectively, to be used as reference material. The obtained samples were then calcinated at different temperatures, ranging from 400 to 800 °C toward the complete oxidation of ZnO, passing through the coexistence of the two phases (ZnS/ZnO). A thorough comparison of the effects of thermal handling on ZnS structural, chemical, and functional evolution was carried out by TEM, XRD, XAS, XPS, Raman, FT-IR, and UV-Vis. Finally, the photocatalytic activity in the H 2 evolution reaction was also compared for selected ZnS and ZnS/ZnO samples. A correlation between size and the oxidation process was observed, as the smaller nanosystems showed the formation of ZnO at lower temperature, or in a larger amount in the case of the ZnS and ZnO co-presence. A difference in the underlying mechanism of the reaction was also evidenced. Despite the ZnS/ZnO mixed samples being characterized by an increased light absorption in the visible range, their photocatalytic activity was found to be much lower.

Zinc sulfide (ZnS) nanoparticles (NPs) are particularly interesting materials for their electronic and luminescent properties. Unfortunately, their robust and stable functionalization and stabilization, especially in aqueous media, has represented a challenging and not yet completely accomplished task. In this work, we report the synthesis of colloidally stable, photoluminescent and biocompatible core-polymer shell ZnS and ZnS:Tb NPs by employing a water-in-oil miniemulsion (ME) process combined with surface functionalization via catechol-bearing poly-2-methyl-2-oxazoline (PMOXA) of various molar masses. The strong binding of catechol anchors to the metal cations of the ZnS surface, coupled with the high stability of PMOXA against chemical degradation, enable the formation of suspensions presenting excellent colloidal stability. This feature, combined with the assessed photoluminescence and biocompatibility, make these hybrid NPs suitable for optical bioimaging.

Nanodroplets in inverse miniemulsions provide a colloidal confinement for the crystallization of ammonium phosphomolybdate (APM), influencing the resulting particle size. The effects of the space confinement are investigated by comparing the crystallization of analogous materials both in miniemulsion and in bulk solution. Both routes result in particles with a rhombododecahedral morphology, but the ones produced in miniemulsion have sizes between 40 and 90 nm, 3 orders of magnitude smaller than the ones obtained in bulk solution. The catalytic activity of the materials is studied by taking the epoxidation of cis-cyclooctene as a model reaction. The miniemulsion route yields APM particles catalytically much more active than analogous samples produced in bulk solution, which can be explained by their higher dispersibility in organic solvents, their higher surface area, and their higher porosity. Inorganic phosphate salt precursors are compared with organic phosphate sources. APM nanoparticles prepared in miniemulsion from d-glucose-6-phosphate and O-phospho-dl-serine yield a conversion in the epoxidation reaction of more than 90% after only 1 h, compared to 30% for materials prepared in bulk solution. In addition, the catalysts prepared in miniemulsion display a promising recyclability.

The photoactivated free radical miniemulsion copolymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and the zirconium oxocluster Zr 4 O 2 (methacrylate) 12 is used as an effective and fast preparation method for polymer/inorganic hybrid nanoparticles. The oxoclusters, covalently anchored to the polymer network, act as metal-organic cross-linkers, thus improving the thermomechanical properties of the resulting hybrid nanoparticles. Benzoin carbonyl organic compounds were used as photoinitiators. The obtained materials are compared in terms of cross-linking, effectiveness of cluster incorporation, and size distribution with the analogous nanoparticles produced by using conventional thermally induced free radical miniemulsion copolymerization. The kinetics of the polymerization process in the absence and in the presence of the oxocluster is also investigated.

Organic-inorganic hybrid nanoparticles are prepared by free-radical copolymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) with the structurally well-defined methacrylate-functionalized zirconium oxocluster Zr 4 O 2 (methacrylate) 12 . The polymerization process occurs in the confined space of miniemulsion droplets. The formation of covalent chemical bonds between the organic and the inorganic counterparts improves the distribution of the guest species (oxoclusters) in the polymer particles, overcoming problems related to migration, leaching, and stability. Because of the presence of a high number of double bonds (12 per oxocluster), the oxoclusters act as efficient cross-linking units for the resulting polymer matrix, thus ruling its swelling behavior in organic solvents. The synthesized hybrid nanostructures are applied as heterogeneous systems in the catalytic oxidation of an organic sulfide to the corresponding sulfoxide and sulfone by hydrogen peroxide, displaying quantitative sulfide conversion in 4-24 h, with overall turnover numbers (TON) up to 8000 after 4 cycles.

A common approach to generate tailored materials and nanoparticles (NPs) is the formation of molecular monolayers by chemisorption of bifunctional anchor molecules. This approach depends critically on the choice of a suitable anchor group. Recently, bifunctional catecholates, inspired by mussel-adhesive proteins (MAPs) and bacterial siderophores, have received considerable interest as anchor groups for biomedically relevant metal surfaces and nanoparticles. We report here the synthesis of new tripodal catecholates as multivalent anchor molecules for immobilization on metal surfaces and nanoparticles. The tripodal catecholates have been conjugated to various effector molecules such as PEG, a sulfobetaine and an adamantyl group. The potential of these conjugates has been demonstrated with the immobilization of tripodal catecholates on ZnO NPs. The results confirmed a high loading of tripodal PEG-catecholates on the particles and the formation of stable PEG layers in aqueous solution.

BiVO4/TiO2 composites with different weight ratios have been prepared by coprecipitation-based reactions followed by either thermal or hydrothermal treatment with the aim of evaluating the TiO2 photosensitization by BiVO4. The obtained materials present in all cases the desired monoclinic phase of BiVO4 and anatase phase of TiO2. Visible light absorption increased with increasing amount of bismuth vanadate. XPS results reveal the surface enrichment of Ti with respect to the bulk composition in samples characterised by a higher content of BiVO4. The photocatalytic activity of the prepared materials was tested for the degradation of isopropanol in the gas phase under indoor illumination conditions. Although none of the composites was able to improve the activity of TiO2, the low BiVO4 containing samples appear as more suitable for further synthesis tuning.

We present a versatile method for the preparation of mesoporous tin-doped indium oxide (ITO) thin films via dip-coating. Two poly(isobutylene)-b-poly(ethyleneoxide) (PIB-PEO) copolymers of significantly different molecular weight (denoted as PIB-PEO 3000 and PIB-PEO 20000) are used as templates and are compared with non-templated films to clarify the effect of the template size on the crystallization and, thus, on the electrochemical properties of mesoporous ITO films. Transparent, mesoporous, conductive coatings are obtained after annealing at 500 °C; these coatings have a specific resistance of 0.5 Ω cm at a thickness of about 100 nm. Electrical conductivity is improved by one order of magnitude by annealing under a reducing atmosphere. The two types of PIB-PEO block copolymers create mesopores with in-plane diameters of 20-25 and 35-45 nm, the latter also possessing correspondingly thicker pore walls. Impedance measurements reveal that the conductivity is significantly higher for films prepared with the template generating larger mesopores. Because of the same size of the primary nanoparticles, the enhanced conductivity is attributed to a higher conduction path cross section. Prussian blue was deposited electrochemically within the films, thus confirming the accessibility of their pores and their functionality as electrode material.

Transparent TiO(2) and TiO(2)-ZrO(2) (molar ratio Zr/Ti = 0.1) thin films were produced by low-temperature sol-gel processing from nanocrystalline aqueous based solutions. The structural features and compositions of the films treated at room temperature, 100 degrees C and 500 degrees C were investigated by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and thermal analysis. Addition of zirconia increased specific surface area (140-230 m(2) g(-1)) and hindered the growth of anatase crystallites, exhibiting a constant size of 6-7 nm in the whole temperature range. These significant changes with respect to pure TiO(2) in anatase crystalline form did not result in significantly and systematically different photocatalytic activity, which was evaluated in terms of aqueous pollutant degradation (azo-dye in water) and self-cleaning ability (fatty contaminant deposit). The films treated at only 100 degrees C showed excellent photocatalytic activity towards azo-dye degradation. Contact angle measurements of aged and contaminated surfaces revealed a fast or sharp hydrophilicity gain under UVA illumination. Accordingly, the results of this study confirmed the potential application of advantageous low-temperature films in water treatment as well as for self-cleaning surfaces.

N,N-Dialkylcarbamato complexes of copper(II), [Cu(O(2)CNR(2))(2)] (R = All = allyl, C(3)H(5); iPr, CH(CH(3))(2)) were prepared with the aim of functionalizing silica and nanostructured silica-zirconia matrices. The mixed matrices for the grafting reactions were prepared by copolymerizing MAPTMS (methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane), the precursor for the silica matrix, with the zirconium tetranuclear derivative [Zr(4)O(2)(OMc)(12)] (OMc = methacrylate), the precursor for the zirconia nanoparticles. Suspension of the silica and silica-zirconia matrices in a solution of the copper dialkylcarbamate led to the functionalization of the respective substrates. The composition, microstructure, morphology, and physicochemical nature of the copper species grafted on the matrices were investigated by FTIR, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), EPR, X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), XRD, TEM, and dinitrogen adsorption. The effect of selected experimental parameters (the nature of the copper precursor and of the matrix, grafting time, thermal treatment) on the grafting reaction was investigated. The Cu/Si ratio is increased by increasing the grafting time and the ZrO(2)-SiO(2) matrix is more reactive to attack by the carbamato complexes than either prepared or commercial SiO(2). After functionalization of the matrix, thermal treatment yielded nanostructured copper(II) oxide clusters, average diameter 12-15 nm, uniformly supported on the silica and on the silica-zirconia matrices.
