2011 - 2012 La nOZIOne di "vita" assume nel penSIero plotiniano un ruolo assolutamente centrale: non è possibile, infatti, comprendere la costruzione del sistema metafisico di Plotino, prescindendo dall'analisi del significato che il termine çm" assume nei singoli contesti. Nonostante il filosofo neoplatonico dedichi molto spazio all'analisi e alla formulazione del concetto di vita, tuttavia tale concetto rimane alquanto problematico. Non è infatti semplice l) definire la vita in se stessa, 2) comprendere dove risieda nel suo senso autentico, 3) cogliere la relazione che essa intrattiene con le varie ipostasi. Il filosofo neoplatonico, nell'elaborazione del pensiero sulla vita, è influenzato dalla metafisica platonica e da quella aristotelica, nella misura in cui la vita è considerata auto-moventesi ('tò au-tò KtVOUV) ed attività (èvèpYEta). L'essenza stessa dell'essere vivente è descritta come un insieme di attività, le quali assumono diverse funzioni a seconda della diversità delle membra, ma che nel loro insieme concorrono al mantenimento della vita dell'intero. (Enn. III 3 (48), 5, 3-5). La nozione di vita può riferirsi, in modo differente, sia all'Intelletto che all'Anima, essa coincide con l'eternità e con il tempo, ed inoltre presiede allo sviluppo di una teoria dell'organismo, ovvero della generazione degli organismi viventi. Il filosofo neoplatonico, pertanto, utilizza la nozione di vita non soltanto in senso metafisico, ossia per dare definizione dell'essenza della realtà dell'Intelletto e di quella dell' Anima, ma anche in un contesto biologico, ossia, per descrivere gli aspetti costitutivi dell' essere vivente. Questo lavoro procede, dunque, servendosi di un'adeguata metodologia scientifica che fa appello agli strumenti della filologia e della storiografia filosofica, dall' analisi della nozione di vita nel pensiero plotiniano, al fine di comprenderne in primo luogo il significato, ossia che cosa intenda Plotino con il termine vita, con lo scopo di dame una definizione; in secondo luogo di tracciarne i caratteri, analizzando tutti i differenti contesti che essa delimita... Despite the Neoplatonic philosopher devotes much space to the analysis and formulation of the concept of life, nevertheless such concept remains somewhat problematico It is not simple, in fact: 1. define life itself; 2. understand where lies in its real meaning; 3. see the relationship that it entertains with the various hypostases. The Neoplatonic philosopher, in the elaboration of the thought on life, was influenced by Platonic and Aristotelian metaphysics, in measure as life is considered selfmotion ('tÒ OtYrò KtVOUV) and activity (èvépYEta). The essence of the living being is described as a set of activities, which assume different functions depending on the diversity of its member, but which together they contribute to the maintenance of the whole life (Enn. III 3 (48), 5, 3-5). The concept of life can relate, in different ways, both to the Intellect and Soul; it coincides with the eternity and time, and also presides the theory concerning the generation of living organisms. The Neoplatonic philosopher, therefore, uses the notion of life not on1y in metaphysical sense, i.e. to defme the essence of Mind and Soul, but also in a biological context, i.e. to describe the constitutive aspects ofthe being. This job proceeds, then, to the analysis of the notion of life in thought of Plotinus, with an adeguate scientific methodology, that appeals to the tools of the philology and philosophical historiography, in order to understand, in first pIace, the meaning of the term life, with the aim of giving a defmition; secondly, to trace its characters, analyzing all the different contexts that it delimits...
