Many pathologies can occur in the periportal space and manifest as fluid accumulation, visible in Computed tomography (CT) images as a circumferential region of low attenuation around the intrahepatic portal vessels, called periportal halo (PPH). This finding is associated with different types of hepatic and extra-hepatic disease in humans and remains a non-specific sign of unknown significance in veterinary literature. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of PPH in a population of patients undergoing CT examination and to assess the presence of lesions related to hepatic and extra-hepatic disease in presence of PPH. CT studies including the cranial abdomen of dogs and cats performed over a 5-year period were retrospectively reviewed. The prevalence of PPH was 15% in dogs and 1% in cats. 143 animals were included and the halo was classified as mild, moderate and severe, respectively in 51%, 34% and 15% of animals. The halo distribution was generalized in 79 cases, localized along the second generation of portal branches in 63, and along the first generation only in one. Hepatic disease was present in 58/143 and extra-hepatic disease in 110/143 of the cases. Main cause of hepatic (36%) and extra-hepatic disease (68%) was neoplasia. Associations between halo grades and neoplasia revealed to be not statistically significant (p = 0.057). In 7% of animals the CT examination was otherwise unremarkable. We determined location and amount of accumulated sand in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) of rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) and guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus) fed diets containing external (silicate) abrasives. Computed tomographic abdominal images of rabbits (n = 44) and guinea pigs (n = 16) that each received varying numbers (4-7) of different diets for 14 days each (total n = 311 computed tomographs), and radiographs of dissected GIT and presence of silica in GIT content (n = 46 animals) were evaluated. In rabbits, the majority of accumulated sand was located in the caecal appendix, an elongated, intestinal structure in the left side of the abdomen. The 'wash-back' colonic separation mechanism in rabbits may be partly responsible for a retrograde transport of sand back to the caecum, where dense, small particles accumulate in the appendix. The appendix likely acted as a reservoir of these particles, leading to significant effects not only of the momentary but also of the previous diet on recorded sand volumes in the rabbits. Guinea pigs have no caecal appendix and a colonic separation mechanism not based on a 'wash-back'. Less sand accumulation was found in their GIT without a specific location pattern, and there were less previous diet effects in this species. None of the rabbits or guinea pigs developed clinical signs of obstruction during the study, and the recorded sand volumes represented 1.0 ± 1.2% of the 14-d sand intake in rabbits and 0.2 ± 0.2% in guinea pigs. Accumulation of sand in volumes up to 10 cm 3 in the GIT of rabbits does not seem to cause clinical health impairment. Large inter-individual differences in rabbits indicate inter-individual variation in proneness to sand accumulation. The reason for the presence of a sand-trapping caecal appendix in animals that are, due to their burrowing lifestyle and feeding close to the ground, predestined for accidental sand ingestion, remains to be unveiled., (© 2021 The Authors. Susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI), an MRI sequence for the detection of hemorrhage, allows differentiation of paramagnetic and diamagnetic substances based on tissue magnetic susceptibility differences. The three aims of this retrospective study included a comparison of the number of areas of signal void (ASV) between SWI and T2 * -weighted imaging (T2 * WI), differentiation of hemorrhage and calcification, and investigation of image deterioration by artifacts. Two hundred twelve brain MRIs, 160 dogs and 52 cats, were included. The sequences were randomized and evaluated for presence/absence and numbers of ASV and extent of artifacts causing image deterioration by a single, blinded observer. In cases with a CT scan differentiation of paramagnetic (hemorrhagic) and diamagnetic (calcification) lesions was made, SWI was performed to test correct assignment using the Hounsfield Units. Non-parametric tests were performed to compare both sequences regarding detection of ASV and the effect of artifacts on image quality. The presence of ASV was found in 37 SWI sequences and 34 T2 * WI sequences with a significant increase in ASV only in dogs >5 and ≤ 15 kg in SWI. The remaining weight categories showed no significance. CT examination was available in 11 cases in which 81 ASV were found. With the use of phase images, 77 were classified as paramagnetic and none as diamagnetic. A classification was not possible in four cases. At the level of the frontal sinus, significantly more severe artifacts occurred in cats and dogs (dogs, p < 0.001; cats, p = 0.001) in SWI. The frontal sinus artifact was significantly less severe in brachycephalic than non-brachycephalic dogs in both sequences (SWI, p < 0.001; T2 * WI, p < 0.001). In conclusion, with the advantages of better detection of ASV in SWI compared with T2 * WI and the opportunity to differentiate between paramagnetic and diamagnetic origin in most cases, SWI is generally recommended for dogs. Background There is an ongoing scientific debate about the degree and clinical importance of gadolinium deposition in the brain and other organs after administration of gadolinium-based contrast agents (GBCAs). While most published data focus on gadolinium deposition in the brain, other organs are rarely investigated. Purpose To compare gadolinium tissue concentrations in various organs 10 weeks after one injection (comparable to a clinically applied dose) of linear and macrocyclic GBCAs in a large-animal model. Materials and Methods In this prospective animal study conducted from March to May 2018, 36 female Swiss-Alpine sheep (age range, 4-10 years) received one injection (0.1 mmol/kg) of macrocyclic GBCAs (gadobutrol, gadoteridol, and gadoterate meglumine), linear GBCAs (gadodiamide and gadobenate dimeglumine), or saline. Ten weeks after injection, sheep were sacrificed and tissues were harvested. Gadolinium concentrations were quantified with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Histologic staining was performed. Data were analyzed with nonparametric tests. Results At 10 weeks after injection, linear GBCAs resulted in highest mean gadolinium concentrations in the kidney (502 ng/g [95% CI: 270, 734]) and liver (445 ng/g [95% CI: 202, 687]), while low concentrations were found in the deep cerebellar nuclei (DCN) (30 ng/g [95% CI: 20, 41]). Tissue concentrations of linear GBCAs were three to 21 times higher compared with those of macrocyclic GBCAs. Administered macrocyclic GBCAs resulted in mean gadolinium concentrations of 86 ng/g (95% CI: 31, 141) ( P = .08) in the kidney, 21 ng/g (95% CI: 4, 39) ( P = .15) in liver tissue, and 10 ng/g (95% CI: 9, 12) ( P > .99) in the DCN, which were not significantly elevated when compared with concentrations in control animals. No histopathologic alterations were observed irrespective of tissue concentrations within any examined organ. Conclusion Ten weeks after one injection of a clinically relevant dose of gadolinium-based contrast agents, the liver and kidney appeared to be reservoirs of gadolinium; however, despite gadolinium presence, no tissue injury was detected. © RSNA, 2021 Online supplemental material is available for this article. Diet affects many factors of an animal's anatomy, but teeth are a specific focus of dietary research, as their durability lends them to record information on a large variety of scales. Abrasive diets like those of grazing herbivores are known to wear down teeth, but how that wear affects tooth growth and the relations between its different morphological components is rarely investigated. Seven pelleted diets varying in abrasive size and concentration were fed over a 17-month period to 49 sheep (Ovis aries), of which n = 39 qualified for morphology measurements. Using computed tomography, scans of the skulls were made over the course of the experiment, and the impact of diet-related wear was observed on tooth volume and morphology, including the position of dental burr marks, over time. Digital caliper measurements were applied to 3D renderings of the teeth, and the volume of crown and root segments were investigated separately. We aimed to detect a signal of root growth compensating for wear, and test if this mechanism would be affected by dietary abrasives. Crown-segment volume loss was correlated to root-segment volume gain. Height and burr mark measurements indicated a much higher experimental tooth wear than that previously reported for free-ranging animals. The reason for this is unclear. There was no relationship between tooth height and dentine basin depth. For all parameters, there was no effect of diet; hence, while the measurements corroborate general understanding of tooth wear and compensatory processes, these methods appear not suitable to assess subtle differences between feeding regimes., (© 2020 American Association for Anatomy.)

Hepatic fat fraction (HFF) can be non-invasively estimated with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) multiple echo gradient recalled echo (GRE) sequence. The aim of this study was to test different methods of sampling strategies to quantify the HFF in healthy cats during body weight gain. Twelve healthy adult male cats were examined in a 3 Tesla MRI unit. Sequences included morphological images, and multiple echo GRE sequence. Cats were scanned at the beginning of the study and twice, each 20 weeks apart during body weight gain. HFF was calculated with 5 different methods of sampling on the multiple echo GRE sequence with different number, size and position of regions of interest (ROIs) and by 2 operators. Results indicated that HFF increased with increasing body weight, and the increase was appreciated with all the 5 methods. There was overall excellent agreement (interclass correlation coefficient = 0.820 (95% confidence interval:0.775-0.856)) between the 2 operators. HFF in the left lateral hepatic lobe was lower than in the other analyzed lobes. HFF measured on large free-hand drawn ROIs was higher than HFF measured with smaller ROIs size. This study proves that different sampling methods for quantification of HFF on multiple echo GRE sequence have overall excellent repeatability and ability to appreciate increased HFF., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist.

With the growing interest in cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (cMRI), veterinary radiologists will increasingly be asked to use this modality to answer complex cardiological questions. Plane alignment is crucial for reproducible assessment of the heart. Anesthesia time is a limiting factor in cMRI. Aims of this prospective experimental study were to introduce a flow chart for standardized cMRI-examination in dogs, to test it for reproducibility using a cardiac CT simulation and to estimate time requirements needed to complete the examination accurately. Six operators (3 radiologists, 1 cardiologist, 1 imaging-resident, 1 technician) simulated a cMRI examination on CT-scans of 6 healthy Beagle dogs twice within two to four weeks. Assessment included qualitative and quantitative scoring of plane quality and time requirements. The quality of planes was high for the left and moderate for the right side of the heart. The intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) of linear measurements of structures on the left was good to excellent (ICC-range: 0.789-0.948) but dropped to moderate to poor levels for the right side (ICC-range: 0.429-0.738). The median time required to complete a full examination was 30 (range: 13-103) min in the first and 24 (range: 15-62) min in the second evaluation. It differed significantly between operators and was consistently shorter for the left than for the right side. In conclusion, a new standardized scheme for cMRI can be quickly adopted by radiologists with some expertise in cross sectional imaging. Objectives: In recent years, complaints of patients about burning pain in arms and legs after the injection of gadolinium-based contrast agents (GBCAs) have been reported. In the current study, we investigated changes of small fibers in the epidermis as a potential cause of the patient complaints in a mouse model., Methods: Six groups of 8 mice were intravenously injected with either a macrocyclic GBCA (gadoteridol, gadoterate meglumine, gadobutrol), a linear GBCA (gadodiamide or gadobenate dimeglumine) (1 mmol/kg body weight), or saline (NaCl 0.9%). Four weeks after injection, animals were euthanized, and footpads were assessed using immunofluorescence staining. Intraepidermal nerve fiber density (IENFD) was calculated, and the median number of terminal axonal swellings (TASs) per IENFD was determined., Results: Nonparametric Wilcoxon signed-rank test revealed significantly lower IENFDs for all GBCAs compared with the control group (P < 0.0001) with the linear GBCAs showing significantly lower IENFDs than the macrocyclic GBCAs (P < 0.0001). The linear GBCAs presented significantly more TAS per IENFD than the control group (P < 0.0001), whereas no significant increase of TAS per IENFD compared with the control group was found for macrocyclic GBCAs (P < 0.237)., Interpretation: It is unclear whether or at what dosage the decrease of IENFDs and the increase of TAS per IENFD found in the current animal model will appear in humans and if it translates into clinical symptoms. However, given the highly significant findings of the current study, more research in this field is required.

Background: The in situ classification of bullets is of interest in forensic investigations when the bullet cannot be removed. Although computed tomography (CT) is usually performed on shooting victims, visual assessment, or caliber measurements using CT can be challenging or infeasible if the bullets are deformed or fragmented. Independent from the bullet's intactness, x-ray attenuation values (CT numbers) may provide information regarding the material of the bullet., Methods: Ethical approval was not required (animal cadavers) or waived by the ethics committee (decedents). Copper and lead bullets were fired into animal cadavers, which then underwent CT scanning at four energy levels (80, 100, 120, and 140 kVp). CT numbers were measured within regions of interest (ROIs). In addition to comparing CT numbers, the dual-energy index (DEI), representing the ratio between the CT numbers of two energy levels, was calculated. The most appropriate method was applied for decedents with fatal gunshot wounds., Results: CT numbers demonstrated no significant difference between copper and lead bullets, and false classifications can easily occur. DEI calculations revealed significant differences between the two groups of bullets. The 120/140 DEIs calculated from the maximum CT numbers obtained from ROIs at the edge of copper versus lead bullets presented a significant difference (p = 0.002) and a gap between the CT numbers of copper and lead bullets and was successfully applied for the decedents., Conclusions: This study presents a viable method for distinguishing copper and lead bullets in situ via CT and highlights the potential pitfalls of incorrect classifications.

Objective: Recent studies reported a signal intensity increase in the deep cerebellar nuclei (DCN) on magnetic resonance images caused by gadolinium deposition after the injection of gadolinium-based contrast agents (GBCAs). There is an ongoing debate if the propensity of a GBCA to deposit gadolinium is primarily determined by its class as either linear or macrocyclic. In the current study, we aimed to compare the amount and the distribution of retained gadolinium of linear and macrocyclic GBCAs in the DCN after a single injection at a dose comparable to a human patient's in a large animal model., Materials and Methods: Eighteen sheep were randomly assigned in 6 groups of 3 animals, which received a single injection of 0.1 mmol/kg body weight of either the macrocyclic GBCAs gadobutrol, gadoteridol, or gadoterate meglumine; the linear GBCAs gadobenate dimeglumine or gadodiamide; or saline. Animals were euthanized 10 weeks after injection. Local distribution and concentration of gadolinium and colocalization to other metals (iron, zinc, copper) in the DCN was assessed by laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry., Results: Average gadolinium concentration for the macrocyclic GBCAs and the saline group was below the limit of quantification (5.7 ng/g tissue). In contrast, 14 (for gadobenate) and 27 (for gadodiamide) times more gadolinium than the limit of quantification was found for the linear GBCAs gadobenate (mean, 83 ng/g) or gadodiamide (mean, 155 ng/g brain tissue). Gadolinium distribution colocalized with other metals for linear GBCAs and a specific accumulation in the DCN was found., Discussion: The current study supports the hypothesis that the amount of gadolinium deposited in the brain is primarily determined by its class as either macrocyclic or linear. The accumulation of gadolinium in the DCN for linear GBCAs explains the hyperintensities in the DCN found in previous patient studies with linear GBCAs.

OBJECTIVE. This study aimed to identify bullets on the basis of their metallic components and to distinguish between ferromagnetic and nonferromagnetic bullets using CT. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Eight ferromagnetic, steel-jacketed lead bullets, four nonferromagnetic, non-steel-jacketed lead bullets, and four nonferromagnetic solid bullets composed of copper or copper and zinc alloys which we refer to here as "Cu(Zn) bullets," were scanned by CT at 80, 100, 120, and 140 kVp. Attenuation values (in Hounsfield units) were measured on an extended CT scale (ECTS) in the core and at the edge of the bullets and were used to calculate the dual-energy index (DEI). RESULTS. Although all nonferromagnetic bullets significantly differed from ferromagnetic bullets, the significant differences were solely attributed to the higher DEI of solid Cu(Zn) bullets compared with that of all-lead bullets. The lead bullets with ferromagnetic, steel-containing jackets did not differ from the lead bullets with nonferromagnetic, non-steel-containing jackets on the basis of DEIs obtained from core and edge measurements. Solid Cu(Zn) bullets could be clearly distinguished from lead bullets regardless of the metallic components of the jackets using DEI calculations from CT numbers on an ECTS. The DEIs based on the dual-energy pair 120 and 140 kVp appear to be the most appropriate for distinguishing between these two types of bullets. CONCLUSION. This study provides new scientific knowledge regarding metals and their characteristics at different tube voltage levels. The abilities of clinically approved dual-energy CT allow differentiation of bullets composed of low-atomic-number (Z) metals from bullets composed of high-Z metals via DEI calculations from CT numbers on an ECTS.

Understanding the normal course and optimizing visualization of the canine peripheral nerves of the lumbar plexus, in particular the sciatic and the femoral nerves, is essential when interpreting images of patients with suspected peripheral neuropathies such as inflammatory or neoplastic conditions. The purpose of this prospective, anatomic study was to describe the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) anatomy of the normal canine femoral and sciatic nerves and to define the sequences in which the nerves are best depicted. A preliminary postmortem cadaver study was performed to determine optimal sequences and imaging protocol. In a second step the optimized technique was implemented on 10 healthy Beagle dogs, included in the study. The applied protocol included the following sequences: T1-weighted, T2-weighted, T2-Spectral Attenuated Inversion Recovery, T1-weighted postcontrast and T1-Spectral Presaturated Inversion Recovery postcontrast. All sequences had satisfactory signal-to-noise ratio and contrast resolution in all patients. The sciatic and femoral nerves were seen in all images. They were symmetric and of homogeneous signal intensity, being iso- to mildly hyperintense to muscle on T2-weighted, mildly hyperintense in T2-Spectral Attenuated Inversion Recovery, and iso- to mildly hypointense in T1-weighted images. No evidence of contrast enhancement in T1-weighted and T1-Spectral Presaturated Inversion Recovery postcontrast sequences was observed. The anatomic landmarks helpful to identify the course of the femoral and sciatic nerves are described in detail. In vivo diagnosis of tick-borne encephalitis is difficult due to high seroprevalence and rapid viral clearance, limiting detection of antibodies in blood and cerebrospinal fluid. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) characteristics of tick-borne encephalitis have been reported, however MRI studies can also be negative despite the presence of neurologic signs. Magnetic resonance spectroscopy ( 1 H MRS) is an imaging method that provides additional information about the metabolic characteristics of brain tissues. The purpose of this retrospective cross-sectional study was to describe brain metabolites using short echo time single-voxel 1 H MRS in dogs with confirmed tick-borne encephalitis and compare them with healthy dogs. Inclusion criteria for the affected dogs were neurological symptoms suggestive of tick-borne encephalitis, previous endemic stay and tick-bite, diagnostic quality brain MRI and 1 H MRS studies, and positive antibody titers or confirmation of tick-borne encephalitis with necropsy. Control dogs were 10, clinically normal beagles that had been used in a previous study. A total of six affected dogs met inclusion criteria. All dogs affected with tick-borne encephalitis had 1 H MRS metabolite concentration alterations versus control dogs. These changes included mild to moderate decreases in N-acetyl aspartate and creatine peaks, and mild increases in glutamate/glutamine peaks. No lactate or lipid signal was detected in any dog. Myoinositol and choline signals did not differ between affected and control dogs. In conclusion, findings supported the use of 1 H MRS as an adjunctive imaging method for dogs with suspected tick-borne encephalitis and inconclusive conventional MRI findings., (© 2016 American College of Veterinary Radiology.)

Background: Locking plates are widely used in fracture fixation, mainly for meta-diaphyseal fractures, comminuted fractures, fractures with a critical-size bone defect, periprosthetic fractures, osteotomies, and fractures in osteoporotic bone. The aim of this animal study was to evaluate the effect on bone-healing of dynamization of locking plate constructs by means of new 5.0-mm dynamic locking screws (in the DLS group), which allow near-cortex micromotion, compared with a more rigid construct utilizing standard bicortical locking-head screws (in the LS group). Use of dynamic locking screws allows modulation of the stiffness of existing locking compression plate systems via parallel interfragmentary micromotion., Methods: A standardized diaphyseal tibial osteotomy (90°, 3-mm fracture gap) was performed and stabilized with a six-hole large-fragment locking compression plate in twelve female sheep (six in each group). Radiographs were made postoperatively and then weekly from week three until sacrifice at nine weeks. Macroscopic, biomechanical, histologic, and radiographic assessments and microcomputed tomography were performed., Results: The callus in the tested specimens in the DLS group had better biomechanical stability, with a significantly greater maximum failure moment (mean and standard deviation [SD] as a percentage of intact, 55.15 ± 20.65 compared with 26.80 ± 14.96 in the LS group; p = 0.021). The DLS group also had greater periosteal callus volume at the near cortex (mean volume and SD as a percentage of the tibial shaft volume, 36.21% ± 10.08% compared with 18.98% ± 8.61% in the LS group; p = 0.026) and in the intercortical region (mean volume and SD as a percentage of the bone volume of the tibial shaft, 3.56% ± 0.52% compared with 2.64% ± 0.98% in the LS group; p = 0.045), as shown by microcomputed tomography. The DLS group also had significantly greater torsional stiffness (mean and SD as a percentage of intact, 84.88 ± 13.51 compared with 58.89 ± 20.61 in the LS group; p = 0.027)., Conclusions: Controlled micromotion and nearly homogeneous interfragmentary strain at the fracture site, together with the stable bicortical fixation achieved by the new dynamic locking screw, led to more uniform callus formation, significantly more callus formation at the near cortex, and biomechanically more competent bone-healing compared with use of rigid locking plate constructs with locking-head screws., (Copyright © 2015 by The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, Incorporated.)
