In a screening project of patients with (complex) craniosynostosis using genomic arrays, we identified two patients with craniosynostosis and microcephaly with a deletion in the 2p15p16.1 chromosomal region. This region has been associated with a new microdeletion syndrome, for which patients have various features in common, including microcephaly and intellectual disability. Deletions were identified using Affymetrix 250K SNP array and further characterized by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) analysis and qPCR. The deletions in our two patients overlapped within the 2p15p16.1 microdeletion syndrome area and were 6.8 and 6.9 Mb in size, respectively. FISH and qPCR confirmed the presence of only one copy in this region. Finemapping of the breakpoints indicated precise borders in our patients and were further finemapped in two other previously reported patients. Clinical features of patients with deletions in the 2p15p16.1 region vary. Including data from our patients, now eight out of nine reported patients have microcephaly, one of the major features, and all had intellectual disability. In February and March 2009, approximately 1,500 backyard pigs of variable age became sick, and approximately 700 of them died or were euthanized in the Lower Artibonite Valley and the Lower Plateau of the Republic of Haiti. The main clinical sign was posterior ataxia followed by paresis and/or paralysis on the second or third day of illness. No gross lesions were observed at postmortem examinations. The morbidity and mortality were approximately 60% and 40%, respectively. Diagnostic samples (whole blood, brain, tonsil, lymph nodes, spleen, and lung) were negative for Classical swine fever virus and African swine fever virus. Porcine teschovirus type 1 was detected by reverse transcription polymerase chain reactions in brain samples. Results of virus isolation, electron microscopy of virus particles, histopathological analysis on brain tissues, nucleic acid sequencing, and phylogenetic analysis of the viral isolate supported the diagnosis of teschovirus encephalomyelitis. The outbreak of the disease in Haiti is the first appearance of the severe form of teschovirus encephalomyelitis in the Americas. This disease poses a potential threat to the swine industries in other Caribbean countries, as well as to Central and North American countries.

Influenza A pandemic (H1N1) 2009 virus continues to rapidly spread worldwide. In 2009, pandemic (H1N1) 2009 infection in a domestic cat from Iowa was diagnosed by a novel PCR assay that distinguishes between Eurasian and North American pandemic (H1N1) 2009 virus matrix genes. Human-to-cat transmission is presumed.

In the spring of 2009, a novel (H1N1) influenza A virus began to spread among humans worldwide. Although the 2009 H1N1 is related genetically to swine influenza viruses, human infection has not been connected to pig exposure. Because the virus is now circulating widely in the human population, swine herds are at increased risk of becoming infected. In order to investigate potential outbreaks of the 2009 pandemic virus in pigs, a quantitative real-time reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) for the detection of the (H1N1) 2009 RNA in clinical specimens was developed. To evaluate the applicability of the test as a diagnostic tool in the screening of field specimens from swine, 64 field isolates of North American swine, 5 equine and 48 avian influenza viruses collected during diagnostic investigations were analyzed retrospectively as well as samples collected during an experimental in vivo infection with two novel H1N1 isolates, A/California/04/2009 (H1N1)v virus and A/Mexico/4108/2009 (H1N1)v. The sensitivity of the qRT-PCR was shown to be higher with respect to standard techniques such as virus isolation and the reproducibility was satisfactory. The present unique and highly sensitive assay is able to detect as little as 1 x 10(1) copies of RNA per microl of template and it represents a rapid and useful approach for the screening and quantitation of (H1N1) 2009 RNA in porcine specimens., (Published by Elsevier B.V.)

We have constructed a 1736-locus maize genome map containing1156 loci probed by cDNAs, 545 probed by random genomic clones, 16 by simple sequence repeats (SSRs), 14 by isozymes, and 5 by anonymous clones. Sequence information is available for 56% of the loci with 66% of the sequenced loci assigned functions. A total of 596 new ESTs were mapped from a B73 library of 5-wk-old shoots. The map contains 237 loci probed by barley, oat, wheat, rice, or tripsacum clones, which serve as grass genome reference points in comparisons between maize and other grass maps. Ninety core markers selected for low copy number, high polymorphism, and even spacing along the chromosome delineate the 100 bins on the map. The average bin size is 17 cM. Use of bin assignments enables comparison among different maize mapping populations and experiments including those involving cytogenetic stocks, mutants, or quantitative trait loci. Integration of nonmaize markers in the map extends the resources available for gene discovery beyond the boundaries of maize mapping information into the expanse of map, sequence, and phenotype information from other grass species. This map provides a foundation for numerous basic and applied investigations including studies of gene organization, gene and genome evolution, targeted cloning, and dissection of complex traits.

Vision, perception and seeing are everyday words, especially important to those in the image creation business. Vision, here, is used to describe the physiological process of image formation in the eye, and its subsequent projection to the brain for further action. Visual perception is a process driven by sensation with its outcome dependent on judgements based on the perceiver's situational experiences. It is a complex involving cerebral interpretations of a series of retinal images. Seeing is an intellectual exercise strongly influenced by perceptions and cultural experiences. It may be expressed in several ways, among them, verbally and pictorially. Some individuals acquire these expressions at an early age, but for most it must be learned. In the sciences, clarity is important, while in the fine arts, subtlety, and sometimes obscurity, are often sought. In all instances, the image maker is a communicator; and if the message is not received by a prepared viewer, the creator has failed. An understanding of seeing is an important mechanism in the process of image creation. An attempt will be made in this paper to advance an understanding of this process.

The iron plaque on roots of Aster tripolium L. growing in waterlogged salt marsh soil adsorbed appreciable amounts of Zn and Cu, with maximum Zn/Fe and Cu/Fe ratios of 0.1 When concentrations of Zn or Cu adsorbed in the iron plaque are expressed as mg metal kg -1 FeOOH (assuming that iron plaque consists mainly of FeOOH), the Zn and Cu concentrations of the iron plaque was up to 680 and up to 2000 times higher than in the surrounding sediment, respectively. The Zn concentration in red roots (with iron plaque) was higher than in white roots (without iron plaque). Zn concentrations in field sampled roots were correlated with the amount of Zn on the roots and the Zn concentration in the soil, whereas Cu concentrations in the roots were only significantly correlated to the Cu concentration in the soil. In vitro experiments showed that red roots take up more Zn than white roots. Measurement of Zn uptake by excised roots showed that the uptake of Zn into the xylem fluid was significantly higher in roots with 500-2000 nmol Fe cm -2 on the root surface compared to roots with less than 500 or more than 2000 nmol Fe cm -2 on the root surface. The results indicate that iron plaque enhances uptake of Zn by the roots but may act as a barrier when large amounts of Fe are deposited on the root surface. The role of the iron plaque on roots of salt marsh plants growing in soil contaminated with heavy metals is discussed.
