A binary mixture of oppositely charged components confined to a plane such as cationic and anionic lipid bilayers may exhibit local segregation. The relative strengths of the net short range interactions, which favors macroscopic segregation, and the long range electrostatic interactions, which favors mixing, determine the length scale of the finite size or microphase segregation. The free energy of the system can be examined analytically in two separate regimes, when considering small density fluctuations at high temperatures and when considering the periodic ordering of the system at low temperatures [F. J. Solis, S. I. Stupp, and M. Olvera de la Cruz, J. Chem. Phys. 122, 054905 (2005)]. A simple molecular dynamics simulation of oppositely charged monomers, interacting with a short range Lennard-Jones potential and confined to a two dimensional plane, is examined at different strengths of short and long range interactions. The system exhibits well-defined domains that can be characterized by their periodic length scale as well as the orientational ordering of their interfaces. By adding salt, the ordering of the domains disappears and the mixture macroscopically phase segregates in agreement with analytical predictions.

Polynucleotide adsorption to negatively charged surfaces via divalent ions is extensively used in the study of biological systems. We analyze here the adsorption mechanism via a self-consistent mean-field model that includes the pH effect on the surface-charge density and the interactions between divalent ions and surface groups. The adsorption is driven by the cooperative effect of divalent metal ion condensation along polynucleotides and their reaction with the surface groups. Although the apparent reaction constants are enhanced by the presence of polynucleotides, the difference between reaction constants of different divalent ions at the ideal condition explains why not all divalent cations mediate DNA adsorption onto anionic surfaces. Calculated divalent salt concentration and pH value variations on polynucleotide adsorption are consistent with atomic force microscope results. Here we use long-period x-ray standing waves to study the adsorption of mercurated-polyuridylic acid in a ZnCl2 aqueous solution onto a negatively charged hydroxyl-terminated silica surface. These in situ x-ray measurements, which simultaneously reveal the Hg and Zn distribution profiles along the surface normal direction, are in good agreement with our model. The model also provides the effects of polyelectrolyte line-charge density and monovalent salt on adsorption.

We show an experimental approach for directly observing the condensation of polynucleotides and their electrolyte counterions at a liquid/solid interface. X-ray standing waves (XSW) generated by Bragg diffraction from a d = 20 nm Si/Mo multilayer substrate are used to measure the distinct distribution profiles of the polyanions and simple cations along the surface normal direction with subnanometer resolution. The 1D spatial sensitivity of this approach is enhanced by observing the XSW induced fluorescence modulations over multiple orders of Bragg peaks. We study the interesting divalent cation driven adsorption of anionic polynucleotides to anionic surfaces by exposing a hydroxyl-terminated silica surface to an aqueous solution with ZnCl2 and mercurated poly-uridylic acid (a synthetic RNA molecule). The in situ long-period XSW measurements are used to follow the evolution of both the Zn and Hg distribution profiles during the adsorption process. The conditions and physical mechanisms that govern the observed divalent cation adsorption and subsequent polynucleotide adsorption to an anionic surface are explained by a thermodynamic model that incorporates nonlinear electrostatic effects.

The bulk and interfacial properties of ternary mixtures with asymmetric amphiphiles (A2B8) in A2 and B2 matrices and in A2 and B10 matrices are investigated by the dissipative particle dynamics type of molecular-dynamics simulations. The monomer concentrations of A2B8(phiA2B8) studied are below the critical micelle concentration (phiA2B8(cmc)) for the formation of micelles in the presence of an adsorbed amphiphilic monolayer at the interface. Macrophase separation from the mixed phase to the segregated state with A-rich and B-rich coexisting phases and the segregation of A2B8 at the interface are thermodynamically gradual but are accompanied by a pronounced stretching and orientation of the constituent chains. The segregation of A2B8 at the interface broadens the interfacial region and reduces the interfacial tension. The chain conformation of the asymmetric amphiphilic molecules and the interfacial properties are dominated by the majority block in the amphiphilic chain and dependent on the composition of the matrix in contact with the majority block. In the A2 and B2 matrices, the B8 blocks in A2B8 chains at the interface resemble a wet brush swollen by short B2 chains. Swelling is responsible for the pronounced stretching and orienting of the amphiphilic chains and the reduced interfacial amphiphile enrichment. At the same interfacial amphiphile excess, however, swollen amphiphiles are more efficient in reducing the interfacial tension than nonswollen amphiphiles.

We study phase separation in symmetric solutions of weakly charged flexible chains of opposite sign. Precipitation is caused by effective attractions due to charge fluctuations and by short-range attractions between monomers. The contribution from charge fluctuations is computed within the random phase approximation (RPA), which takes into account the connectivity of charges in the polyions. The impenetrability of the ions is accounted for by using a modified Coulomb potential in the RPA. In good solvent conditions the precipitate monotonically swells and eventually dissolves upon addition of salt. However, near the theta-solvent condition, but still in the good solvent, the precipitate can be stable at any salt concentration. Moreover, the density of the precipitate after initial decrease can increase with addition of salt. This effect is a result of redistribution of salt between the precipitate and the supernatant, which is due to an interplay of electrostatic and hardcore interactions. For not too weakly charged polyions the precipitate properties become strongly dependent on temperature even in good solvent conditions., ((c) 2004 American Institute of Physics)
